  • The Washington Academy, founded in 1780, later becoming Salem Central School, was among the first secondary schools in New York state. Maintaining quality educational programs has always been given a high priority. The dis-trict's buildings retain the charm of its early architecture and unique beginning. The district has a stable enrollment of 900 students, K-12, on one central campus. This includes approxi-mately 50 students from the neighboring town of Rupert Vt., who are enrolled in the second-ary level program as part of a unique relationship with the state of Vermont. The approxi-mately 425 students in the ele-mentary school are served by 22 classroom teachers as well as full-time professional person-nel in the areas of art, music, physical education, and library science. In the Jr./Sr. High, 35 teachers serve approximately 450 students in academic, occupa-tional, fi ne arts, and special edu-cation areas.

Points of InterestCovered BridgesThere are three covered bridg-es in the town of Salem. All three span the Battenkill River. Two are operational - The Rexleigh, connecting Salem to the town of Jackson and the Eagleville connecting the Salem hamlet of Eagleville with the town of Jackson. These are three of four remain-ing covered bridges in Washington County.

Rexleigh Covered BridgeLocated approximately three miles from Salem Village on Rexleigh Road, the Rexleigh Covered Bridge was built in 1874. Rexleigh, or "Kings Meadow," appropriately describes the panoramic view of the wooden Rexleigh Covered Bridge, the flowing Battenkill, and the neatly farmed meadows

one sees from the crest of Rexleigh Road.

Eagleville Covered Bridge The Eagleville Covered Bridge is located two miles southeast of Shushan, and can be reached by traveling east on County Route 61 through the hamlet of Shushan and turning right on Eagleville Road. The bridge was built in 1858 by Ephraim W. Clapp. It is the best preserved example in the State of a 100 ft. double-chord Town lattice truss.

The Battenkill RiverThe Battenkill River flows along and defines the entire southern boundary of the town of Salem on its course to the Hudson. The river's head-waters are in Vermont and its 50 mile length is equally divid-ed between Vermont and New York. The river is enjoyed by many users including trout fisherman, canoeists and floaters.

Revolutionary War CemeteryA burial ground established by

    early settlers to the Salem

    area, the Revolutionary War

    Cemetery is located on

    Archibald Street in the village

of Salem. It holds the remains

of some of the earliest citizens

    of the community. Local his-

tory tells of how, after the

    Battle of Saratoga in 1777,

    about 100 soldiers bodies

    were loaded like cord wood

    on wagons and brought to

Salem for burial in one com-

    mon grave in this cemetery.
