2 The Park University women’s golf team enters the 2011 spring season at full strength, bringing a five-player roster into a tough spring schedule that begins in a loaded field at Armstrong Atlantic State University in March.

Plern Promboobpa, a junior from Thailand, leads Park into the spring as the squad’s No. 1 player, defending her program-leading career scoring average of 81.19 strokes, nearly two strokes better than No. 2 on the all-time list. Promboobpa has also won three-consecutive tournaments entering the spring, cap-turing titles at Graceland University, Avila University and Lindenwood University in the fall. She was also an all-conference performer last season, finishing in the top 10 players from the American Midwest Conference in the 2010 Unaffiliated Championship at Spen-cer T. Olin Golf Club in Alton, Ill. Two freshmen join Promboobpa on the roster, as both Callie Porter and Nicole Kar-ley played in all four fall events for the Pirates, and Jasey Huber, a sophomore, also competed throughout the fall and comes back for the spring season. “We have a good young group coming back, and Plern has a chance to compete on a very high national level,” said head coach Mike Mueller. “Adding Sarah (Hall) will also help us. She’s talented and has a lot of potential.” Hall joins the women’s golf team after already earning two varsity letters on the Park University women’s basketball team. She played in 14 games, including six conference games this season, and in her freshman season, she averaged 1.4 points and 1.8 re-bounds in 22 games played, including two starts. Park’s 2011 spring roster must replace two key seniors from the 2009-10 team, in-cluding an all-conference performer in Nicole Wiehe. Nicole Ainsworth also departs from

the 2009-10 roster, and both players were part of Park’s 2007-08 team that advanced to the 2008 NAIA Women’s Golf Na-

tional Championship in San Diego, Calif. “Any time you lose two players who have been a part of your program for four years, it’s going to be tough to replace them,” Mueller said. “But I think we’ve done a good job of filling those roles with young

players who will really contribute to this program in the long term.” After the Pirates open the spring season at Arm-

strong Atlantic State, the team will travel to Fulton, Mo., to compete in the William Woods University Invitational March 28-29, and April 4-5, the team will play in an NCAA Division

II event, competing in the Green and Gold Shootout, hosted by Missouri Western State University and Northwest Missouri State University. The tournament begins at Mozingo Lake Golf Course on April 4, in Maryville, Mo., and April 5, the tournament con-cludes in St. Joseph at Fairview Golf Course. William Jewell will host the Pirates April 11-12 at Cardi-nal Hill Golf Course, and April 18-19, Park’s signature event,

the Park University Invitational, will take place at The Na-tional Golf Club of Kansas City’s “The Deuce.” Conference championships follow, April 22-23 in Alton, Ill., and the

NAIA Women’s Golf National Championship will take place May 17-20 in Greeneville, Tenn., at Link Hills Country Club.

“We have a very competitive schedule and it is full of challenges,” Mueller said. “These golf

courses will test our young players and pro-vide a good challenge for our veterans to

go after championships.”

4 MIKE MUELLERPark University Director of Athletics Claude English named Mike Mueller as the school’s second

head women’s golf coach in program history, on Sept. 10, 2009, and Mueller will enter his sec-ond season in 2010-11.

Mueller (pronounced Miller), a 12-year veteran in the golf business, currently works as a teaching pro at The National Golf Club of Kansas City, a 36-hole private golf club that has been recognized as a Top 100 Golf Community in America for four-consecutive years. The National also serves as Park University’s home practice and tournament facility outdoors. Mueller is also the owner of Park’s indoor practice facility, The Golf Academy at Parkville Commons. The Academy not only serves Park’s women’s golf team, but also serves as the indoor home to many golfers throughout the Kansas City area looking to fine-tune their golf game. “Coaching a college golf team has long been a dream of mine, and I look forward to building on the

tradition of both athletic and academic excellence at Park University,” Mueller said. “I feel that we can be a program that can compete with the best schools nationally. The combination of a beautiful campus with high academic standards, a great place to practice and play at The National and our location should allow us to recruit quality student-athletes.” Prior to his stop at The National, Mueller was the owner and Director of Instruction for the Golf Academy of the Northland, a full-service instructional program at Shoal Creek Golf Club in Kansas City. He has also made local stops at Truman State University, where he was an instructor, teaching an eight-week golf course each se-mester. The teaching role came in conjunction with his work as the Head Golf Professional and General Manager of Kirksville Country Club, in Kirksville, Mo. Mueller got his start in the golf business at Bryan Park Golf Club in Greensboro, N.C., where he was the assistant golf professional from September of 1997 to August of 2002. From Greensboro, he moved on to Atlanta Country Club in Marietta, Ga., where he was also assistant golf professional for another Top 100 club with 500 club members. Mueller holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education (1996) from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, and a master’s degree in counseling and educational development from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. “We’re excited to have Mike as a member of our staff,” English said. “He brings a wealth of experience, and he has a great ability to teach the game. He has tremendous golf knowledge, but more importantly, he is committed to the academic success of our student-athletes.” Under Mueller’s tutelage, current junior Plern Promboobpa has captured four individual tournament titles, including three-straight in the fall season. “We have a group of outstanding young women who have proven that they can play at a high level both individually and as a team,” Mueller said. “My goal for these players is to help them achieve their full potential during their time here at Park.”

HEAD WOMEN’S GOLF COACH, SECOND SEASON

ALAN PICKELLAlan Pickell begins his first season as a member of the Park University women’s golf coaching

staff, joining head coach Mike Mueller in the instruction of Park’s women’s golf student-athletes, as well as the day-to-day operations of Park’s women’s golf program. A PGA Apprentice, Pickell

returned to the Kansas City area after graduating from The Golf Academy of America in Orlando, Fla. in 2009. He is an Assistant Professional at The Deuce at the National.

THE NATIONAL GOLF CLUB OF KANSAS CITYThe National Golf Club of Kansas City and The Deuce at The National Golf Club serve as the year-round home to the Park University women’s golf program. Located only a few miles from the Park University campus, The National and The Deuce provide 36 holes of champi-onship golf to the Pirate women’s golf program, including the 2010 Park University Invitational, which was held last season at The Deuce. The Deuce will again provide the home to the 2011 Park University Invitational, which is scheduled for April 18-19. Both of Park University’s golf coaches are on staff at The National, including head coach Mike Mueller who serves as the club’s main teaching professional. The National is also a part of the backbone of the Parkville community as one of the premiere golf communities in the Kansas City metropolitan area. For more information on what The National has to offer, call (816) 587-HOME, or log on to www.thenationalgolfclub.com.

THE GOLF ACADEMY AT PARKVILLE COMMONSThe Park University women’s golf program has a new in-door home halfway between the Park University campus and the Pirates’ home course, The National Golf Club of Kansas City. The team will train at The Golf Academy at Parkville Commons, which opened this week in Parkville.

“Making real progress at golf; or anything for that matter; must be a year round endeavor,” said head coach Mike Mu-eller. “You can not become a better golfer by practicing only part of the year. As an instructor, it is great that I can now help people regardless of the weather.”

Mueller will not only coach the Pirates, but will also oper-ate the facility, located less than two miles from Park Uni-versity’s Parkville Campus, and just a few miles from The National Golf Club of Kansas City. The facility will allow the Pirates to practice indoors when weather becomes an is-sue.

The Golf Academy at Parkville Commons will feature an extended-flight indoor range and simulator, 90 simulated golf courses on the simulator, a 700-square foot undulated putting area, a private teaching studio and will serve as the year-round indoor and bad-weather training facility for the Park University women’s golf program.

Golf equipment, club-fitting and apparel will also be avail-able on site through The National Golf Club of Kansas City, and the facility will offer memberships to members of the public looking to fine-tune their games during the win-ter months and on rainy days during the golf season. For more information on the academy, log on to www.playbet-tergolfkc.com.

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City area home, offering students the features

of both small-town life and the flashing lights of a big city. With a population of more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athlet-ics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Mis-souri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the

University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district, coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east gives Park University students two great entertainment opportu-nities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is lo-cally referred to as “north of the river.” Con-

tained wholly within Missouri, it en-compasses portions of Clay County including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Liberty, North Kansas City and Glad-stone. Kansas City is situated at the con-fluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the state border between the two states. The Kansas City Met-ropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 29th larg-est in the United States, with an esti-mated population just over 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports his-tory, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League, Major League Soccer’s Kansas

City Wizards and the Kansas Speedway, which hosts two NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year including one Nextel Cup Series event in the fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kan-sas City T-Bones independent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Ex-plorers of World Team Tennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertainment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Experi-ence, which includes the College Basket-ball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buf-falo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basket-ball Tournament. In 2010, Park University made its second appearance in four sea-sons and its fourth overall appearances in the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship, beat-ing Georgetown (Ky.) College in the first round, 83-75, before falling to Biola (Calif.) University in the second round. Addition-ally, the National Association of Intercolle-giate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007. Kansas City is also known for its his-toric shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has

become a popular shopping district, while Town Center and The Legends at Village West keep shoppers occupied in Kansas.

Prior to 2010-11, English was honored for his service as an athletics administrator by being inducted into the McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame, June 23, 2010, in Anaheim, Calif., representing the NAIA in a group of seven individuals honored by the John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation. The Foun-dation supports the John McLendon Memorial Minority Post-graduate Scholarship Awards and is presented to senior-level minority students who intend to pursue a graduate degree in athletics administration. English was joined in the 2010 McLendon Hall of Fame in-duction class by Percy Bates, Bernie Bickerstaff, Howard Gen-try, Sr., Michael Haynes, Rafer Johnson and Don Newcombe, while a second group of Pioneer Award winners was also hon-ored. That group included Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez, Ernie Davis, Mike Garrett, Tom Goss, Dan Guerrero, Charles Harris, Tommy Hawkins, Kim Ng, Fritz Pollard, Burl Toler and Tyrone Willingham. In the spring, English will be inducted into the Chattahoochee Valley Sports Hall of Fame, in his home town of Columbus, Ga. English began his affiliation with Park University in the 1992-93 men’s basketball season, coaching the Pirates through the end of the 2004-05 campaign. For his final 10 sea-sons at the helm of the Park men’s basketball program, English also assumed the duties of Director of Athletics, a position he will continue into his 15th year in the 2010-11 academic year. During his tenure as Park’s Director of Athletics, English has guided the addition of two spring sports – baseball and women’s golf – in addition to facility upgrades throughout the department of athletics. Park’s facility upgrades under English’s watch began with the 1,500-seat Julian Field, home to Park University men’s and women’s soccer, followed by the 1,200-seat Breckon Sports Cen-ter, constructed in 2000 to become the home of Park University’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as its men’s and women’s volleyball programs. Breckon Sports Center houses ad-ministrative offices and two domes – one for competition and one for practice. Recent upgrades to Park’s softball and baseball facilities have

also come under English’s watch, including new dugouts at the Park University Softball Com-plex, as well as new bleachers and game-scoring facilities at Comfort Field, the home of Park University baseball. English is the winningest coach in Park University men’s basketball history, compiling 182 wins to push his overall win

total to 227. From 1981 to 1984, English was the head men’s basketball coach at his alma

mater, Rhode Island, where he was named Atlan-tic-10 Conference Coach of the Year in the 1981-82 season. His coaching tenure at Park was highlighted by

the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Division I Men’s Basket-ball Tournament semifinal round in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsman-ship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team recognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After a stellar collegiate playing career for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the Univer-sity of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hartford

Capitals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Championship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. As Director of Athletics at Park, the Pirates have captured 47 conference championships, and in each of his 14 previous sea-sons as athletics director, at least one Park program has advanced to NAIA postseason play each year. Also during his run as Director of Athletics, 77 student-athletes have been named NAIA All-Americans, and 161 student-athletes have earned Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete honors. In 2008-09, Park University’s department of athletics carried an overall grade point average better than 3.0, and the Pirates earned a school record seven NAIA scholar teams, marking more than half of the department’s programs posting a team GPA of 3.0 or better.
