Park University’s six men’s soccer seniors have enjoyed the success of qualifying for a national tour-nament appearance, a feat they mastered during the 2008 season, but they have also tasted the defeat of being one win away from another national tourney appearance in their sophomore and junior seasons. Not only were they one win away from the national stage but they were one victory away from an AMC Conference Tournament championship, as Columbia College took down the Pirates by a score of 2-1 in overtime in the championship match in 2009 and it took penalty kicks for the Cougars to end the Pirates 2010 season on its home field. Entering the 2011 season, you could say the Pirates certainly don’t lack any motivation to reach the team’s 10th national tournament appearance in the history of the program. Head coach Efrem Shimlis knows from experience it will be a tough journey for his six seniors and the rest of his squad of 24 player’s, but he is very pleased with the way his team has responded since its disappointing loss nine months ago. “Our team’s attitude is amazing and we are a more focused team coming into this season then we have ever been before,” said Shimlis. “They know what it takes now to get to the next level, they are so focused that I don’t have to tell them to look past the way the last two seasons ended. “Each time you don’t reach your goals its a learning experience and they will benefit from what has happened in the past.” The six seniors who will look to lead the squad this season are defender Alain Matingou, defender Robert Palmer, midfielder Sibhat Dagnachaw, midfielder Todd Smith, defender Ceasar Mulonzi and for-ward Roberto Carrion. Combined the six have played in 206 games over the last three years and have averaged 11 wins a season, they now have the task of leading a squad that features six juniors, eight sophomores and two freshmen. Defenders Matingou, Palmer and Mulonzi have played in 113 of those games as a trio and Matingou and Palmer return to Park after both being named 2010 AMC First-Team All-Conference performers. Matingou and Palmer continually defended the opponents top scorers and helped lead Park to five shut-out victories in 2010 and a 10 match winning streak from Sept. 22-Nov 9. Mulonzi started in three games in 2010 and will look to fill one of the four starting defender posi-tions in 2011. The other three seniors have also made their mark over the last three years for Coach Shimlis. Smith has appeared and started at the midfield position in all 34 of Park’s matches the last two seasons and played in 10 games his freshman year. He has one career goal and two assists and is still one of the fastest players on the team. Dagnachaw has been a staple in the middle of the field for the Pirates since 2008, Dagnachaw had a career high 12 starts last season and scored a career high two goals. He now has three career goals and three career assists. Carrion had a breakout year in 2010, scoring his first collegiate goal and recording his first career assist. He took three shots on the year and appeared in three games. The junior class is packed with talent as midfielder Ja-ir Gooden returns after scoring a career high eight goals in 2010 and was named a 2010 AMC First-Team All-Conference performer. Gooden has played in 30 games the last two seasons and has 15 goals and six assists, performing at a high level on defense as well. Matthew Ashman will anchor the forward position for the Pirates after having a magnificent 2010 season. Ashman’s 15 goals led the Pirates and he was named a 2010 NAIA Men’s Soccer Honorable Men-tion All-American and an AMC First-Team All-Conference player. Ashman scored five goals in Park’s 7-3 victory over MidAmerica Nazarene and was named the AMC Offensive Player of the Week and the NAIA Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Dawit Gebremariam and Phillip Hayes round out the returning juniors on this year’s squad. Gebre-mariam picked up his second career goal in 2010 and appeared in a career high 14 games, while Hayes ap-peared in two matches in 2010 and attempted one shot. The other two juniors are transfers including defender forward Andrew Devero and midfielder Devon MeHaffey. Devero comes to Park after playing at Missouri Valley for two seasons, he will play his old team on Sept. 13 at Julian Field. Devon MeHaffey, the older brother of sophomore Tyler MeHaffey comes to Park after a pair of seasons at Missouri Valley. Highlighting the core of the sophomore class is a group of youngsters that made a big impact their freshmen seasons. Goalkeeper Reece Harris returns for the Pirates after starting 16 games his freshman year and collected 62 saves and five shutouts. Anass Moudfir was a solid young player for Shimlis in 2010, appearing in 12 games with two starts and Tyler MeHaffey returns after appearing in two games his freshman season. Two other sophomores who will make big impacts in 2011 is Kiel Williams and Nermin Abidovic. Williams appeared and started in 12 games last season and recorded an assist in Park’s 7-3 win over MidAmerica Nazarene, while Abidovic played in 11 games and started in one. Abidovic took two shots on the year and played well on the defensive side of the field. Two sophomores who join the Pirates for the first time in 2011 are goalkeeper Ryan Miller and forward John Russell. Miller will fight for playing time with returning keeper Harris and Russell joins Park after a stellar high school career at soccer giant Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Mo. Park’s squad will feature only three freshmen including Nick Cintron, Steven Njuba and Dan Taylor. Cintron is a skilled defender from Excelsior Springs High School and Taylor is a talented forward from Kansas City’s Winnetonka High School. Njuba will join the crowded goalkeeper crowd and hopes to see some time in between the posts. “Our goal of getting back to the national tournament is reachable,” said Shimlis. “We have a good schedule and we want to continue to play the way we did last year when we won 10 straight games.”

Senior Robert Palmer has been a team leader on the defense since the day he stepped foot on the field as a freshman. He has played in 48 games with 47 starts as a defender for the Pirates.

2011 Schedule

2 010 AMC Coach of the Year, Efrem Shimlis and the Park men’s soccer team will embark on a tough 2011 schedule which features seven home contests at Julian Field and seven road matches. This will mark the 11th season in which Shimlis has roamed the sidelines as Park’s head coach and he look’s forward to the schedule ahead. “We’ve got another solid schedule laid out for us this season,” said Shimlis. “We will go up against not only some of the top teams in the Midwest but some of the top squad’s in the country and we are proud of that.” Shimlis has led Park to seven NAIA national tournament’s in his 10 years as head coach and look’s to take the Pirates to the national tourney for the first time since 2008. Park begins the 2011 season on Saturday, Aug. 27 on the road against Midland University in Freemont, Neb. The Pirates and Warriors met last season at Julian Field on Aug. 28 with the Pirates rolling past Midland, 5-0. Park’s home opener is scheduled for primetime on Friday, Sept. 2 when rival Baker University heads to town to face Park at 7 p.m. The Pirates and Wildcats have faced off in each of the last four seasons and the two teams are 2-2-1 against one an-other in that four year span. For the first time in school history Park will take on Benedictine University at Springfield. The Bulldogs just recently joined the AMC and will take on Park on Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. at Julian Field. Benedictine-Springfield is entering its second season in the NAIA and first in a conference after previously serving as a community college institution. On Sept. 13, the Pirates will welcome in an unfamiliar foe as Missouri Valley travels to Julian Field for a dual with Park. The Pirates haven’t faced the Vikings since Sept. 14, 1994 when the two teams met in a 1-0 victory for Mo Valley. Park’s AMC season opener will get started on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Williams Baptist College. Park has won two straight against the Eagles, the first was a 5-0 win on Halloween in 2009, and the second came last year in a 3-0 shutout victory for Park on Oct. 16. Three days later Park will again travel this time about 100 miles north to La-moni, Iowa to face rival Graceland University. The Yellow jackets and Pirates always put on a show and last year’s match didn’t disappoint, as Park won in a grueling, 2-1 victory. Park gets back to AMC action on Saturday, September 24 at 3 p.m., as they host Hannibal-LaGrange University. Hannibal and Park have split their last two meetings, but Park took down the Trojans last year in a 3-2 win. On Tuesday, Sept. 27 Park hits the road again for another non-conference match-up against MidAmerica Nazarene. The Pirates had an unforgettable night against the Pioneers last season at Julian Field in their 7-3 win. Ramone Palmer (left) was a third-team NAIA All-American in 2010 and was named the AMC Player of the Year. Anass Moudfir (right) appeared in 12 games last season and returns for his sophomore campaign. Park’s Matthew Ashman scored five goals against MNU and was eventually named the AMC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week and the NAIA National Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. Ramone Palmer also collected four assists that night for the Pirates. Saturday, Oct. 1 Park will take on Missouri Baptist at home for a 3 p.m. kickoff and four days later Park takes on a solid Lindenwood University squad in St. Charles, Mo. The Lions had been consistently one of the premiere teams in the NAIA but have now moved on to NCAA Division II affiliation.After a non-conference match with Kansas Wesleyan University on Monday, October 10 at home, Park welcomes in 2008 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Champion Bethel University (Tenn.), on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Julian Field. Bethel won the 2008 NAIA National Championship as an unseeded team and took out nationally ranked Rio Grande University, 2-1, in the national title game. This will be a game fans will definitely want to witness, as two of the finest men’s soc-cer programs in the country faceoff at 3 p.m. After the Bethel match, Park will take on three straight AMC opponents to wrap up the regular season.Park’s final home match will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. as they face William Woods University. It will also mark senior night for Park’s seven seniors. Park then travels to Columbia, Mo. on Friday, Oct. 21 for a primetime match with the Cougars. The regular season will wrap up on Saturday, Oct. 29 in St. Louis, Mo., when the Pirates face Harris-Stowe State at 3 p.m.

After a 2-1 victory over Lindenwood in 2010 at Julian Field, Park will travel to St. Charles, Mo., this season to make the return trip to face the Lions on Oct. 5.

Columbia and Park have battled it out in the AMC as the top two teams in the conference the last two seasons and the Cou-gars have ended Park’s run in each of those seasons in the AMC title match. But the 2011 Pirate squad hopes to end that streak a make a run to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time since 2008.

2010 AMC Coach of the Year Efrem Shimlis, begins his 11th season as head coach of the Park University men’s soccer team and enters the 2011 season as the second winningest coach in program history.

The Addis Ababa, Ethiopia native led Park to the 2010 AMC Men’s Soccer regu-lar season championship with a 6-0-1 regular season mark and 12-3-2 overall record. Park’s Ramone Palmer was also named the AMC Men’s Soccer Player of the Year. From Sept. 22-Nov. 9 Park won 10 straight games and outscored its opponents, 34-9, and shutout four teams. Park earned the No. 1 seed in the AMC conference tournament and met with No. 3 seeded Columbia College in the AMC Championship game at Park’s Julian Field. Both teams battled through 90 minutes of regulation and two 10 minute over time periods before ending the hard fought match in penalty kick’s, with Columbia eventually winning, 4-3, in PK’s. It marked the second straight year that the Cougars ended Park’s season in the AMC Championship game. Shimlis accepted the head coaching position after three years as an assistant coach in the program, and a four-year career as a player for the Pirates. Park’s 2009 season was full of highs and lows, the Pirates began the year red hot, winning five of its first six matches. The Pirates even shutout No. 4 ranked and even-tual national champion, Lindsey Wilson College, 3-0, on Labor Day, the win marked Shimlis’ 100th career victory at Park. Park then dropped three straight matches, before rebounding for two straight American Midwest Conference wins over Missouri Baptist and Harris-Stowe. Park entered the AMC Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed and defeated Har-ris-Stowe, 3-0, in the quarterfinal match. The Pirates hit the road for the AMC Semifinal round to face the No. 2 seed, McKendree. In a thrilling overtime game, Park defeated the Bearcats, 1-0, in over-time off of a goal by freshman Matthew Ashman. Park eventually lost to No. 1 seeded Columbia College in the AMC Champion-ship game in another overtime match, 2-1. Park ended the year with a record of 10-6-1 and failed to qualify for the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship Tournament for the first time in eight years. In his 10 years at Park, Shimlis has amassed a 132-75-17 record, averaging 12 wins per season. Shimlis led the Pirates to another superb season in ‘08, qualifying Park for its seventh straight NAIA National Tournament appearance, which was the third longest active streak in the country. The Pirates eventually lost to Baker Univer-sity, 1-0, in the NAIA Opening Round game but still posted a stellar, 11-4-3 overall record. Park was ranked in every NAIA Coaches Top 25 Poll in 2008 and was ranked as high as No. 7 in the Poll.

In 2007, Shimlis led the Pirates to a 13-6 overall record and finished 4-0 in the MCAC. The men were crowned MCAC Regular Season Champs and Region IV Tournament Champions. Park took second in the MCAC Conference Tournament, falling 1-0 in over-time to Bellevue University. Shimlis was recognized by both the MCAC and Region IV as Coach of the Year. Shimlis took the Pirates to their sixth NAIA National Tournament in a row in 2007. Park was knocked out in the first round of the tournament by No. 5 seeded Simon Fraser (B.C.), 1-0. The Pirates didn’t leave the tournament empty handed, as they were recognized with the 2007 NELS Dahlquist Team Sportsmanship Award. Shimlis had four athletes recognized as all-Americans, and eight athletes were named to Region IV and MCAC teams. The Pirates also spent the entire 2007 season nationally ranked in the NAIA Top-25. Park was a preseason No. 15 pick and peaked at No. 14 twice throughout the season. The Pirates finished the 2006 season at 13-8-1 and Shimlis took the Pirates to Daytona Beach, Fla. for the NAIA Tournament. Park defeated Goshen College out of Indiana in penalty kicks, advancing to Round Two of the tournament. Their quest for the NAIA title ended in Round Two for a second year in a row, falling 3-2 to No. 3 Webber International (Fla.). Before his appointment at Park, Shimlis collected a wide range of coaching and profes-sional playing experiences. Originally from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Shimlis played for the Pirates from 1992-1996. His extensive experience includes playing professionally for the 1997 World Champi-on Kansas City Attack of the National Professional Soccer League, as well as the Daytona Speed Kings and the Columbus Comets. In the spring of 2008, Shimlis co-founded the youth soccer club Harambe Futbol Club. Harambe F.C. is based in the Kansas City metro area and has 14 boys and girls soccer teams. Shimlis is the head coach of U-11 girls Harambe F.C. Fury and U-15 boys Harambe F.C. United. Shimlis, who resides in Parkville, Mo., earned a bachelor’s degree from Park in history in 1997.

one of the most talented players to ever wear a uniform for Park Uni-versity, Enock Odede enters his fifth season as the Assistant Coach for the men’s soccer program. Odede played for the Pirates from 2002-2005 and led the Pirates to the NAIA National Championship game in 2002. Park has amassed a record of 46-19-3 in Odede’s four years as assistant coach. The Kenya native began is college career at Mid-Continent University in Mayfield, Ky., and played one season for the Cougars before enrolling at Park. He was also named an NAIA All-American in 2003 and was named the MCAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2003. In his first season with the Pirates in 2002, Odede helped lead the team to an appearance in the NAIA National Championship game. Odede had four goals in 2002 with 10 assists in 21 games played. In ‘03, Odede played in 23 matches and had 14 goals and 14 assists, good for 42 total points. In 2004, he scored four goals and collected 10 assists in 21 matches. In his three year career at Park, Odede played in 66 matches and scored 22 goals while accumulating 34 assists. Odede resides in Riverside, Mo., and enjoys swimming in his free time.

2010 – One of the most stout defenders in the AMC last season, Alain Matingou was named to the 2010 AMC First-Team All-Conference after leading the Pirates to a first-place finish in the AMC regular season…Matingou also scored a career high two goals on the year, both coming early in the season the first in Park’s home opening loss to University of Sioux Falls and the second coming on the road in Park’s loss at William Jewell…Matingou attempted 11 shots on the year with four shots on goal and helped the Pirate defense to five shutout victories…With the help of Matingou, Park gave up just 23 goals in 17 games in 2010 and in a one-month span from Oct. 9 to Nov. 9 the Pirates gave up just one goal in five matches and shutout Missouri Baptist, Baker, Williams Baptist and William Woods…In the AMC Championship game against Columbia, Matingou was called upon to shoot a penalty kick in the final period against the Cougars and he delivered with a powerful PK goal past Columbia’s keeper Ken Searles.

2010 Recap

The 2010 Park University men’s soccer season may have ended the same way it did in 2009, but the 2010 Pirates regular season was one of the most successful seasons in school history and the team prepared themselves for potentially a string of national tournament apperances in the future. Park’s 2010 schedule featured eight non-conference matches and a seven-match AMC schedule. Park began the season with an early home opener with University of Sioux Falls. The Cougars came to Julian Field not phased by the Pirates size and strength on the pitch and upset Park, 3-1, sending Park to only its second season opening loss in the last seven years. The Pirates were able to redeem themselves one week later when they hosted Midland Lutheran University on Aug. 28. Park rolled past the Warriors, 5-0. The Pirates took 20 shots, compared to just four by the Warriors. Ramone Palmer had a pair of goals and Roberto Carrion was the player of the game, collecting his first career goal and assist. After a 10-day layoff, Park returned home to face a talented Lindenwood University squad at Julian Field. In front of the largest home crowd of the season, Park defeated the Lions, 2-1, with two goals from All-American Ramone Palmer. Palmer scored in the 4th and 69th minutes for the Pirates. Park’s first road trip came on Sept. 12 in Liberty, Mo., against rival William Jewell. The Pirates were able to get on the board first with a penalty kick goal by Ramone Palmer, but with three unanswered goals by the Cardi-nals and a goal by defender Alain Matingou for the Pirates, Park wasn’t able to catch up with William Jewell and returned home after a 4-2 loss. Three days later Park travled to No. 9 ranked Benedictine College for a non-conference match against the Ravens. In six previous matches against BC, Park head coach Efrem Shimlis had never lost to the Ravens. But the Ravens handed Shimlis his first loss to BC that night in a runaway 4-1 victory. Ja-ir Gooden scored the lone goal for Park and the Pirates were in a tough spot entering conference play with their record of 2-3. On Sept. 18 the Pirates embarked on their second season in the American Midwest Conference when they hosted McKendree University. Park and McKendree battled through strong winds and heavy rain in the area until officials ended the game in the 72nd minute. The game ended in a 1-1 tie as Ramone Palmer scored for the Pirates and Perry Hughes tied it up in the 31st minute. After that match with McKendree it would be nearly two months until Park lost or tied a game. The winning streak began at Julian Field on Sept. 22 when Graceland University came to town. The Pirates defeated Graceland by a score of 2-1 and Ramone Palmer worked his magic again scoring both of the Pirates goals. Then on Sept. 25 the Pirates picked up their first road and AMC victory of the season by taking down Hannibal-LaGrange, 3-2. Matthew Ashman scored his first two goals of the season and Palmer scored the game winner in the 79th minute. The Pirates returned home on Sept. 29 and had a match to remember against MidAmerica Nazarene. The Pirates destroyed MNU by a score of, 7-3, and Ashman recorded five goals, Ramone Palmer had four assists and Jair Gooden slammed home the other two goals. For his magnificent performance against the Pioneers, Ashman was named the AMC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week and the NAIA Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. After the MNU victory, Park embarked on a three game AMC stint with a 5-1 home win over Harris-Stowe State, a 3-1 road win over William Woods and a shutout road win over Missouri Baptist. On Oct. 12, the Pirates traveled to Baldwin City, Kan., to face rival Baker University in their final non-conference match of the season. Since 2000, Baker and Park had met 10 times and the Pirates owned a 5-3-2 record in that span. In 2010, Park contolled the match from the start and left the pitch with a 3-0 win. Ramone Palmer scored his 12th goal of the season, senior midfielder Simon Senfuka scored his third goal of the year and Matthew Ashman continued is tear through the season with his 13th goal. In their final road match of the season, Park picked up their third straight shutout victory in a 3-0 win over Williams Baptist and set up a showdown with Columbia College on Oct. 23 at Julian Field for the final regular season match of the year. The Pirates and Cougars were playing for the No. 1 seed in the AMC tournamnet in that Oct. 23 game. Park scored first against CC with a goal by Jair Gooden in the 11th minute and Matthew Ashman put the Pirates up 2-0 in the 70th minute. Reece Harris had three big saves in the match and the only goal Columbia could muster was a penalty kick goal by John Hutchinson. Park earned the distinction of AMC regular season champs with the victory over Columbia and earned the No. 1 seed and home field advantage throughout the conference tournament. In the AMC semifinals Park rolled past William Woods, 3-0, and now prepared to face Columbia for the second straight season in the AMC Cham-pionship game, but this time the game was at home. The match was scoreless for the first 59 minutes until, Columbia’s leading scorer Dylan Barduzzi sailed a ball past Park keeper Reece Harris to give the Cougars the lead. It looked like CC was onto another AMC title with a 1-0 lead up to the 88th minute. But with less than 90 seconds remaining, like he has all season, Matthew Ashman split through the Columbia defense and tied up the game at 1-1 sending the match to overtime. After a scoreless first and second overtime, the match moved on to penalty kicks. The tension was inser-mountable and five players from each team had a chance to carry his team to victory. Columbia College nailed its first three penalty kicks and was in great shape at the start. Simon Senfuka sailed the Pirates first PK attempt high, Jair Gooden, Ramone Palmer and Alain Matingou all connected on their at-tempts and Brian Eike missed his for CC, so the score was tied 3-3. Next up for Columbia was Nikola Velickovic, the defender went left and Park’s Reece Harris went right and Columbia was now up, 4-3. The final attempt was now up to freshman Kiel Williams for Park. Williams attempt sailed high and Columbia celebrated its second straight AMC title over the Pirates. Park ended the season with a record of 12-3-2. But Park didn’t leave the season empty handed, Park’s head coach Efrem Shimlis was named the AMC Coach of the Year and Ramone Palmer earned the AMC Men’s Soccer Player of the Year and was named a 2010 NAIA Men’s Soccer Third-Team All-American. Matthew Ashman named a NAIA Honorable Mention All-American and there were five Pirates who were named to the 2010 AMC First-Team All-Conference squad. Park returns 15 players from the 2010 season to this year’s squad and looks to qualify for their first appear-ance in the 2008 season.

Junior forward Matthew Ashman had a break-out season for Park in 2010, scoring a team high 15 goals and earned the distinction of NAIA Player of the Week on Oct. 11. His 15 goals were the most scored by a Pirate since Mirsad Dzilic’s 24 goals in 2006.

Sophomore goalkeeper Reece Harris led Park to a 12-2-2 record in his 16 starts in 2010 and collected 62 saves with five shutout victories.

IA National Tournam

ent Teams

1962Park’s first ever NAIA National Tournament qualifying team came in 1962, led by coaches Ara Zakaryan and Ed Nelson. Park went 7-2 on the year and represented Area 1 in the NAIA National Tourney. The Pirates came in fourth-place in that tournament, which was held in Richmond, Ind. Park took on East Stroudsburg (Pa.) in game one losing, 5-0, and took on Castleton State (Vt.) in its second game losing, 3-2.

Under first-year head coach Ben Popoola, the Pirates went, 19-2-1. In game one of the tournament Park took on Westmont (Calif.) and the match ended in a tie and went on to penalty kicks. Park won the match in penalty kicks and earned the right to play for the national championship against Warner Pacific. In the championship match, Park lost to Warner, 3-2, in overtime.

In just his second year as head coach of the Pirates, Efrem Shimlis led Park to its third NAIA National Tournament and made it all the way to the champion-ship game. Park rolled through the national tournament defeating Concordia University (Calif.), 2-1, in game one and knocked out No. 1 ranked Rio Grande University, 1-0, in the tournaments second game. In the semifinal match against perennial powerhouse Lindsey Wilson College, Park again prevailed beating the Blue Raiders, 4-3, in penalty kicks to face off against University of Mobile in the championship game. Park ended up losing to Mobile 2-1. Park finished the year with a 21-2-2 record but that record was later amended to 1-24. The NAIA ruled that the Pirates used an ineligible player throughout the year.

2002

1984

2003 brought another successful season for Park in both the regular and postseasons. The Pirates again qualified for the national tournament and took on No. 11 ranked Auburn University-Montgomery in the first game, winning in penalty kicks, 6-5, to move onto the quarterfinals. In the quarters, Park matched up against Hastings College and lost narrowly, 1-0, to end their season with a record of 14-8-1

The 2004 Park University squad was again led by head coach Efrem Shimlis and finished the season with the most wins in the history of the program with a record of 20-3-1. The Pirates made it to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament, losing to Auburn University-Montgomery, 5-2.

2005For the second time in three years, Park and Hastings College met in the NAIA National Tournament, but this time the two met in the first round, in 2003 both squads faced off in the national quarterfinals with Hastings winning, 1-0. In an-other hard fought game, Hastings again came out victorious and defeated the Pi-rates, 1-0. Park finished that year with an overall record of 15-4-2.

2007

Mirsad Dzilic had an outstanding season for Park in 2006, scoring 24 goals and adding 4 assists for a total of 52 points, earning him MCAC Player of the Year honors. As a team, Park faced Goshen University in Round 1 of the NAIA national tournament, winning in penalty kicks, 3-1. Park then took on No. 3 ranked Webber International, falling 3-2. Park finished the year with a record of 13-8-1.

2006

Park finished the ‘07 campaign as the Region IV Tournament Champions and MCAC Regular season champs. Park was also ranked in every NAIA Top 25 coaches poll, peaking at No. 14. Park again competed in the National Tournament, losing to No. 5 seeded Simon Fraser University, 1-0, in the first round. The Pirates finished the season with an overall record of 13-6.

The 2008 squad featured a plethora of young talented athletes and earned 13 MCAC awards, including Coach of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, not to mention three NAIA All-Americans. Park finished the season 11-4-3 and lost in the NAIA Opening Round game to Baker University, 1-0, in overtime.

Park University’s training facilities for student-athletes includes a regulation track which has just been completely renovated and is located adjacent to Julian Field, a full weight room and cardio training facility located in the Pirate Fitness Center, as well as a sports medicine facility in the Pirate Fitness Center with three full-time, fully accredited athletic trainers.

Park University’s outdoor athletics facilities include one of the NAIA’s premiere soccer facilities, Julian Field, as well as Comfort Field, which is home to Park’s baseball program, and the Park Softball Complex. Park’s soccer teams also train on a top-notch practice surface at Hemingway Field, located adjacent to the baseball facilities.

P ark University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City area home, of-fering students the features of both small-town life and the flashing lights of a big city.With a population of more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district, coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east, gives Park University students multiple entertainment opportuni-ties within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland area of metropolitan Kansas City, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is locally referred to as “north of the river.” Contained wholly within Missouri, it encompasses portions of Platte and Clay counties, including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Gladstone, Liberty and North Kansas City. Kansas City is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the border between the two states. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 29th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just over 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League, Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City and the Kansas Speedway, which hosts multiple NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year, including two Sprint Cup Series event in the spring and fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kansas City T-Bones independent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Explorers of World TeamTennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertainment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Bas-ketball Experience, which includes the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits historic Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. In 2010, Park University made its third appearance in five seasons, and its fifth overall, in the national tournament. Additionally, the National Association of Intercol-legiate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Leawood Town Center and The Legends at Village West in Kansas City, Kan., keep shoppers occupied in Kansas.

In 2010, the University was ranked as the No. 1 value among private colleges and universities by Parents & Colleges, an online resource for parents of college-bound students. According to Parents & Colleges, institutions included on this list offer a diver-sity of degrees, have affordable tuitions and/or offer generous financial aid, and report the highest SAT or ACT scores for the incoming class. Founded Founded in 1875 in Parkville, Mo., Park University has developed into a comprehensive, indepen-dent institution that is a national leader in higher education. In 2000, Park achieved university status and now serves more than 24,000 students annually at 40 campus centers in 21 states and online. Serving an ethnically diverse student population and non-traditional adult learners has, for many years, been central to Park’s educational mission. Even in its first year, Park University enrolled women students as well as men, something that was unusual at the time; and two of the original 17 students were Native Americans. Park was also an early integrator when it welcomed African-American students to live in Park’s residence halls in the 1950s.

Present Providing such access has developed considerable diversity among the student population, with more than 650 international students from 110 countries, and a 42 percent student representation from racial, ethnic and cultural groups typically underrepresented in colleges and universities. Michael Droge, Ph.D., was appointed president by the Park University Board of Trustees in 2009. He arrived at Park in September 2002 to serve as the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs. His role in that position gave him charge of all academic areas of the University, including acting as the liaison be-tween the academic and non-academic components of the University. A nationally respected participant in higher education, Droge has a distin-guished academic career of teaching, research and serving as principle investigator on federally funded programs such as the Multiethnic Biomedical Research Support Program from the National Institutes for Health, the Bridges to the Future Program from the NIH and the McNair Scholars Program from the Department of Educa-tion. He has also served as a member of the Neuroscience and Physiology Panel for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Washington, D.C., and an ad hoc re-viewer for the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the National Science Foundation, and a journal reviewer for Brain Research and J. Neuroscience. His academic awards include the Beall Memorial Award for Outstanding Dissertation from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, the Mary Mason Lyon Award for Excellence in Scholarship, Teaching and Service, and the President’s Award for Distinguished Service from Texas Woman’s University. Droge received his Bachelor of Arts degree in biology and German from the University of Kansas and he began graduate studies in Germany at the University of Bonn as a Fulbright Scholar. Upon receiving his Master of Science degree from Texas Tech University, Droge went on to earn a Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He came to Park University with 19 years of experience in higher education as a faculty member and administrator, most recently as a professor of biology and dean of graduate studies and research.

C laude English is in his 16th year as Park University’s Director of Athletics, serving in the role since January of 1996. Throughout English’s 15-year tenure as Director of Athletics, Park University has steadily improved its athletics facilities, enhancing an already first-rate student-athlete experience. The 2011-12 academic year will add to the list of facility improvements under English’s watch, when the Park University cross country and track and field squads will begin the season with a new track adjacent to Julian Field, a 1,500-seat soccer stadium also built under English’s watch in 2001. Breckon Sports Center, home to Park’s volleyball and basketball programs, as well as the baseball and softball complexes, have continued to see playing-surface and aesthetic upgrades in English’s 15 years as Athletics Director. In 2010-11, English was honored for his service as an athletics administrator by being inducted into the McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame, June 23, 2010, in Anaheim, Calif., representing the NAIA in a group of seven individuals honored by the John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation. The Foundation supports the John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards is presented to senior-level minority stu-dents who intend to pursue a graduate degree in athletics administration. English was joined in the 2010 McLendon Hall of Fame induction class by Percy Bates, Ber-nie Bickerstaff, Howard Gentry, Sr., Michael Haynes, Rafer Johnson and Don Newcombe, while a second group of Pioneer Award winners was also honored. That group included Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez, Ernie Davis, USC AD Mike Garrett, Tom Goss, UCLA AD Dan Guerrero, Charles Harris, Tommy Hawkins, Kim Ng, Fritz Pollard, Burl Toler and former Washington and Notre Dame head football coach Tyrone Willingham. English began his affiliation with Park University in the 1992-93 men’s basketball season, coaching the Pirates through the end of the 2004-05 campaign. For his final 10 seasons at the helm of the Park men’s basketball program, English also assumed the duties of Director of Ath-letics, a position he will continue into his 16th year in the 2011-12 academic year. English is the winningest coach in Park University men’s basketball history, compiling 182 wins to push his overall win total to 227. From 1981 to 1984, English was the head men’s basketball coach at his alma mater, Rhode Island, where he was named Atlantic-10 Conference Coach of the Year in the 1981-82 season.His coaching tenure at Park was highlighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinal round in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team recognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After a stellar collegiate playing career for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the University of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hartford Capitals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Championship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. As Director of Athletics at Park, the Pirates have captured 50 conference championships, and in each of his 15 previous seasons as athletics director, at least one Park program has ad-vanced to NAIA postseason play each year. Also during his run as Director of Athletics, 86 student-athletes have been named NAIA All-Americans, including a track and field national champion in the NAIA marathon, and 179 student-athletes have earned Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete honors. In 2008-09, Park University’s department of athletics carried an overall grade point average better than 3.0, and the Pirates earned a school record seven NAIA scholar teams, marking more than half of the department’s programs posting a team GPA of 3.0 or better. In 2010-11, Park narrowly missed its school record for scholar teams, landing six on the list, including first-time honorees as the baseball and men’s basketball teams achieved better than 3.0 team GPAs.

Steve Wilson enters his fifth year as the Director of Sports Information at Park University, overseeing publicity and gameday operation efforts for all 15 sports. Wilson is the primary media liaison for the entire Park University athletics department, as well as both women’s soccer and women’s volleyball in the fall, men’s basketball in the winter, and baseball and women’s golf in the spring. He is also responsible for overseeing all publications and online efforts within the department, including www.parkathletics.com, which was named the best in-house NAIA website in 2009-10 and placed third in 2010-11, and serves as the official online home for Pirate athletics. Additionally, Wilson supervises game-day staff at all home events as well as other administrative duties within the Department of Athletics. He also serves as Park University’s play-by-play voice when the Pirates are on the road. In 2011-12, he will oversee an enhanced social media experience for Park University fans, as well as a renewed commitment to quality online video broadcasting. The 2011-12 season will also bring on a new role, when Wilson splits duties as American Midwest Conference Sports Information Director with Co-lumbia College Associate Director of Athletics Cindy Fotti. Fotti and Wilson will coordinate all promotional aspects for the conference, including weekly and postseason awards, preseason polls, social media efforts and the conference’s online home, www.amcsportsonline.com. An active CoSIDA and NAIA-SIDA member, Wilson is involved in several national committees, and in 2011 he was named to an at-large position on the NAIA-SIDA Board of Directors. He is also involved in publications committees, serving as a contest coordinator of the NAIA-SIDA Walt McAlexander Baseball Brochure Contest as well as a judge in various CoSIDA competitions. In 2010-11, he produced a pair of top-billing media guides in NAIA-SIDA publications contests, winning the Walt McAlexander Baseball Brochure Contest and the NAIA-SIDA single-sport brochure contest for his women’s golf media guide. In all, 2010-11 produced five top 10 finishes in publications contests, for Wilson, bringing his career total to 13 top 10 NAIA-SIDA finishes. A 2004 graduate of Kansas State University, Wilson began his career in sports information as a Graduate Assistant at Kansas Wesleyan University during the 2004-05 school year, assisting with the Coyote football, men’s basketball, baseball and women’s basketball programs. In 2005, he joined the athletic media relations staff at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, where he was the primary contact for women’s vol-leyball, women’s basketball and baseball, while also assisting with publicity efforts in the Bobcat football program. While at Texas State, Wilson also provided basketball and baseball play-by-play on KTSW-FM. Away from San Marcos, Wilson assisted on the game-day staffs of the 2005 United States Basketball League Championship, the 2006 NCAA Women’s Basketball Regional in San Antonio and the 2006 NCAA Baseball Regional in Austin, Texas. During the 2005 football season, he also assisted the game-day efforts of the New Orleans Saints, who were relocated to San Antonio by Hurricane Katrina. Prior to his work in sports information, Wilson was a play-by-play voice and account manager for KSAL-AM in Salina, Kan., as well as a contributing writer and assistant editor for Rivals.com College Baseball. He received top honors in the student-intern play-by-play category by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters in 2003. Wilson and his wife, Sarah, reside in Roeland Park, Kan.

Tyler Price enters his fourth year as the Assistant Sports Information Director at Park. Price is the primary contact for both men’s soccer and cross country in the fall, women’s basketball and men’s volleyball in the winter, as well as softball and track and field in the spring. Price joins SID Steve Wilson as the primary liaison between Park’s athletics programs and the public. The two are responsible for serving the needs of not only the media, but also coaches, student-athletes, supporters and fans. For the second straight men’s volleyball season, Price will work as the Mid-America Men’s Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) Sports Information Direc-tor. In that capacity Price will work closely with all 18 institutions and will continue to monitor the conference’s new website and work with institutional media relations personnel.Price will coordinate the NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Player’s of the Week along with the NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Top 10 Poll. Price is a proud member of NAIA-SIDA as well as CoSIDA. Price and Wilson produce 10 media guide publications each year for the Park University athletic depart-ment and Price has been awarded with five NAIA-SIDA Top 10 in the Nation awards for his publications, including a second-place finish for his 2011 Men’s Volleyball Media Guide. A 2008 graduate of Kansas State University, Price spent three years in the Sports Information Department from 2005-08 as a Student Assistant. Along with assisting in the promotion of all 12 varsity sports at K-State, Price’s main responsibility was serving as the primary contact for the women’s equestrian program. After graduation, Price joined the Sports Information staff at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). After a few months promoting the NAIA, Price made the trek a few miles north to Parkville. The Overland Park, Kan., native also worked in sports broadcasting early in his career, spending two summers working at NBC KSHB-TV in Kansas City as an Associ-ate Sports Producer for the 38 Sports Spot television program and all evening KSHB-TV newscasts. Price is an avid Kansas City sports fan and enjoys watching all Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and Kansas State athletic events. Price and his wife, Jenny, also a graduate of K-State, reside in Overland Park, Kan., with their daughter Maria.

The American Midwest Conference (formerly known as the Show-Me Collegiate Conference) sponsors championships in 13 different sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The purpose of the American Midwest Conference is to promote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar foundations to engage in athletic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic environment. The AMC is a member of the National Association of Intercol-legiate Athletics (NAIA). The nine member institutions that make up the AMC include Park University (Parkville, Mo.), Columbia College (Columbia, Mo.), Hannibal-LaGrange University (Hannibal, Mo.), Harris-Stowe State University (St. Louis, Mo.), Missouri Baptist University (St. Louis, Mo.), Stephens College (Columbia, Mo.), Wil-liams Baptist College (Walnut Ridge, Ark.), Benedictine University at Springfield (Springfield, Ill.) and William Woods University (Fulton, Mo.)

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercol-legiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participa-tion in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the confer-ences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa. The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
