PRESENTATION OF THE 25 GOVERNOR’S AWARDS OF EXCELLENCEThe Artist:BoryanaRusenovaInaisavisualartistfromBulgarianorigin,whocurrentlylivesinColumbus,Ohio.ShegraduatedfromColumbusCollegeofArtandDesignin2006withafocusonfinearts.Lateronsheobtainedherpostgraduatedegreeinart,designandarchitectureeducationfromtheGlasgowSchoolofArtinScotland.SheworksinmixedmediaandhasexhibitedaroundColumbus,inScotland,andinherhometownPlovdiv,Bulgaria.LivinginthemetropolitancityofGlasgowasagraduatestudentinspiredBo-ryanatouseurbanspacesashersubjectmatter.Herlatestpaintingsdescribethecityasalyricalspaceofpattern,movement,andchaos.Boryana’sworkisincludedintheGreaterColumbusArtsCouncilCollection,ChemicalAbstractsCollectionandPlovdivCulturalCenterPermanentCollectioninBulgaria.ShecurrentlyteachesinthefineartsandfoundationdepartmentattheColumbusCollegeofArtandDesign.Boryana’sworkisrepresentedbyArtAccessGalleryinBexley,Ohio.

THE OHIO GOVERNOR’S YOUTH ART EXHIBITIONTheOhioGovernor’sYouthArtExhibition,nowinitsforty-firstyear,isdedicatedtotheeducationaland

artisticadvancementofourtalentedyoungpeopleinthestateofOhio.TheExhibitionisopentoallof

Ohio’s1,052highschools,bothpublicandprivate,charteredbytheStateofOhioDepartmentofEduca-

tion.Ourpurposeistoprovideallbuddingyoungartistsofthestatewithopportunitiestoadvancetheir

talent,whetherthatbethroughscholarshipsorsimplyexperiencingtheprocessofenteringtheirworkina

competition.TheExhibitionisavaluableincentiveforouryoungpeople;itencouragesanappreciationfor

theartsthroughoutOhioandreflectsthefinequalityofartinstructionandtalentthatexistinourstate.

TheprocessofselectingartworksfortheStateExhibitionbeginsonaregionallevel.Thestateisdivided

into15regionallocations,withhighschoolstudentsineachregioninvitedtoenterworkinthatregional

judging.EachregionhasadesignatedRegionalDirector,whoisresponsibleforchoosingthejudgesfor

hisorherregionandarrangingspecificsoftheevent.

ThisstatejudgingtakesplaceinColumbus;however,thejudgesforthislevelofcompetitionarechosen

fromalloverthecountryandaregenerallyprofessionalartiststhemselves,collegelevelinstructors,or

both.

Fromthe12,000regionalentriesfromthe15regions,approximately3,000areselectedtoenterthestate

judging.Statejurorsthenselect300fortheactualExhibition,with25ofthe300chosentoreceivethe

Governor’sAwardofExcellence.Scholarshipsareofferedtoseniorsbymorethan30universitiesandcol-

legesofart.Theselectionofstudentstobeofferedscholarshipsisleftstrictlyuptothoseinstitutionswho

offerthem.TheGovernor’sExhibitionismerelyavehiclethroughwhichschoolsandstudentsarebrought

together.

TheExhibitionopensattheJamesA.RhodesStateOfficeTower,acrossfromthestatecapitol,inApriland

closesneartheendofMay.AnawardsceremonyisheldattheRiffeCenterCapitolTheatreinthestu-

dents’honorpriortotheopening.Theattendanceattheawardsceremonyisover700andtheExhibition

attendanceisatleast1,200.AttheExhibitionawardsceremony,studentsreceiveAwardsofExcellence

andscholarshipawards.
