WhatAreheartwormsandhowDoDogsGetthem?

Once considered a parasite of warmer climates, mosquitoes are bringing heartworm to nevada. Washoe county Vector control

has identified a cool weather mosquito species as well as a year round reservoir for other species in our storm drains. once transmission from an infected mosquito occurs, adults will develop within 6 months. Fully mature heartworms can be found in the heart and adjacent blood vessels growing up to 14 inches long. Heartworms clog main blood vessels reducing blood flow to organs such as the kidneys, liver and lungs. the most obvious signs of infection include coughing, shortness of breath, weakness, and listlessness. While treatment of canine heartworm disease is usually successful, prevention of the disease is much safer and more economical. options for preventing heartworm disease in your dog include once a month oral preventive or a six month injection. interactive maps and detailed information can be found at www.heartwormsociety.org.

sierra canyon

the budget and Finance committee of Sierra canyon held its first meeting in March of this year, and a variety

of experienced and talented homeowner committee volunteers (Sarah Madden, Dick Vogt, Dave urbanec,

lorraine barrett, Glenda Powell, Walt Keane, ray lee and Mike Schwimmer) accepted the challenge. this

committee is a perfect conduit for improved communications between homeowners and the Sierra canyon board

of Directors when improvements (purchases) within Sierra canyon are being considered now or in the future. the

committee will also shape the future of Sierra canyon in a positive way.

the budget and Finance committee meetings have been very productive and have already set the wheels in

motion regarding a process for homeowners to be able to request and be involved with improvement considerations

reviewed and acted upon by the Sierra canyon board of Directors. Filling out a “Purchase request Form” is the

first step for homeowners to bring forward an item that they would like to be considered for purchase. the form

outlines specifics of the purchase (who, what, where and why) and makes the homeowner requesting the purchase

responsible for the research showing why the purchase is needed for Sierra canyon. once the specifics of the request

are itemized, homeowners are then asked to have other residents sign a “Homeowner Signature Form” supporting/

not supporting the requested purchase. the forms are then brought to the budget and Finance committee for review

and consideration. if the committee agrees that the purchase should be considered, it will recommend approval to the

Sierra canyon board of Directors. this new process makes homeowners aware of the item for purchase and makes

the details of the purchase transparent to the community—what a great start for this committee!

besides improving purchase communications, the budget and Finance committee will also be focusing on

“Strategic long range Planning.” Strategic planning will not only ensure that the Sierra canyon Association will

remain financially sound, it will also project where Sierra canyon expects to be in five, ten or even fifteen years and

how we will get there. Without this process the community wouldn’t know where it is going, much less if it ever got

there. these are just a few of the important topics that the budget and Finance committee will tackle in the coming

months and years. Whether you are a homeowner who would just like to be more informed of fiscal matters that affect

Sierra canyon or you have a specific purchase request, the budget and Finance committee meetings are the perfect

resource for the community. Hope to see you at the next meeting!
