third straight Ncaa appearaNce for lady bisoNs Lipscomb makes its third-straight NCAA tournament appearance this week taking on host Texas A&M in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Lady Bisons are making their fourth appearance in the last five years after sweeping rival Belmont 3-0 in the Atlantic Sun Tournament last month to claim their third-straight A-Sun Tournament Championship. This will also be Lipscomb’s first appearance in the tournament outside of the state of Ohio having previously travelled to Dayton twice and Columbus once for regional action. lookiNg for first Ncaa wiN The Lady Bisons head to College Station, Texas looking for their first NCAA Tournament win having gone 0-3 in three previous chances. Lipscomb dropped a 3-0 decision to Dayton in 2007, a 3-0 decision to California in 2009 and a 3-1 decision to Ohio State in 2010.

Quick hitters• The Lady Bisons had a pair of lengthy streaks snapped earlier this season. Early in the season, Lipscomb lost a 29-game home

winning streak at Allen Arena when Arkansas State topped the Lady Bisons 3-1. Lipscomb then had a 44-game Atlantic Sun Conference winning streak that dated back to 2008 snapped by Belmont in a 3-1 loss at BU.

• The Purple and Gold currently led the A-Sun in hitting by 39 points. Lipscomb enters the NCAA Tournament with a .255 hitting percentage ahead of Belmont’s .216. Lipscomb also sits atop the league in assists (13.03/s) and kills (14.11/s). Those numbers climb even higher against A-Sun competition with Lipscomb hitting a league best .281 and also pacing the field with a 13.98 assists-per-set mark and a 14.91 kills-per-set average. The Lady Bisons are also tough on the defensive end ranking in opponent hitting percentage holding the opposition to a .188 percentage.

• Four Lady Bisons (Katie Rose (10), Caitin Dotson (9), Abby Fay (7) and Lauren Ford (1)) have posted double-doubles this season.

• Rose currently ranks second in the A-Sun in hitting percentage with a .344 average only five points behind Jacksonville’s Kylie Rose. Dobson sits just behind in third with a .315 average. Rose’s numbers are even higher against A-Sun competition hitting a league-best .403 against conference foes.

• Green ranks third in the league in kills averaging 3.97 per set. She sits just ahead of Ford (3.20/s) and Rose (3.12/s), who rank sixth and eighth, respectively.

• Lipscomb is ranked 89th in the latest NCAA RPI ratings.• Rose set an Atlantic Sun and Lipscomb record earlier in the season with eight solo blocks against Arkansas State.• The Lady Bisons had the shortest distance to travel for the regional, 771 miles compared to 982 miles for Kentucky and 1,093

miles for Dayton.• Lipscomb is the winningest team in the A-Sun over the past five years having posted a record of 113-44 (.715). The Lady

Bisons have reached the 20-win mark in each of those five campaigns.• Rose was named MVP of the A-Sun Tournament held last month and was joined on the all-tournament team by Fay and Ford.

Having led the Lipscomb Volley-ball program to unprecedented heights, including three NCAA Tournament appearances, three Atlantic Sun tournament champion-ships and a 35-game conference unbeaten streak, Brandon Rosen-thal is in his ninth season at the helm of the Lady Bisons program.

Under his direction, Lipscomb has also made four-straight appearanc-es in the A-Sun tournament cham-pionship game and five-straight trips to the A-Sun tournament, along with winning a pair of A-Sun regular-season titles in 2009 and 2010. The Lady Bisons have also been honored with three A-Sun Players of the Year in Rosenthal’s tenure.

2010 saw a number of firsts for Rosenthal’s club as Lipscomb repeated their suc-cesses of the 2009 campaign and made it back-to-back A-Sun regular season and conference championships for the first time in school history.

The Lady Bisons kept their A-Sun winning streak that dates back to the 2009 season going behind a perfect 12-0 finish in league play. Lipscomb then made a herculean comeback in the A-Sun tournament championship game to rally from a 2-0 deficit to down East Tennessee State and advance to face Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament in Columbus, Ohio. The trip to Columbus, Ohio for the regional saw Lipscomb come close to pulling the upset over the Buckeyes losing 3-1 but lost two of the sets by three points or less.

The 2009 season was truly a “banner” year for head coach Brandon Rosenthal and the Lady Bison volleyball program. The team ran the A-Sun table finishing a perfect 22-0 in league play, a feat never before accomplished since the confer-ence was founded in 1978. The Lady Bisons went on to win their second A-Sun tournament in three years and earn the program’s second birth in the NCAA Tournament.

The 2009 accolades including a 25-match win streak, the longest in school his-tory, and the highest RPI for Lipscomb at 34, led to Rosenthal earning 2009 A-Sun Coach of the Year honors. Lipscomb also picked up its first All-America honors in program history as Alex Kelly and Jake Pease were named honorable mention All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

In 2007 Rosenthal directed the Lady Bisons to their first ever A-Sun Conference Tournament Championship, their first ever berth in the NCAA Tourna-ment and their first winning season overall in the NCAA era.

“It is a challenge each year to win more matches than we did the year before,” Rosenthal said. “Our past success says a lot about what we have done as a program. We have recruited players who want to be part of something special.”

“It is more than just volleyball. We are recruiting players who want to be part of a legacy.”

Rosenthal has worked hard to re-cruit players who possess a passion, not only for volleyball, but for life as well. Whether it’s on the court,

Head coacH brandon rosentHaLin the classroom or out in the community the players have to be willing to put forth the effort to succeed on a daily basis.

“I want to see that passion each and every day,” Rosenthal said. “That is the hardest part of what I ask for from my players. I expect their best and by that I mean effort, whether it is on the court, in the classroom, traveling with the team or performing community service.”

“Practices are tough, both mentally and physically. I want our players to be challenged because when the official blows the whistle to start a match it is the player, not the coach, who makes the difference.”

The statistics posted by the Lady Bisons as a team and as individual players have been increasingly impressive each season. But Rosenthal thinks the game of volleyball is about more than the numbers.

“There are coaches who are obsessed with stats and coaches who think stats are just part of the game,” Rosenthal said. “I am not one to get caught up in the numbers. I listen to my coaches, my players and my heart.”

“As a team, whether we win or lose, the one thing I ask is that we give maxi-mum effort. The difficult challenge is making that same team go further than they have ever gone on a daily basis.”

After spending two seasons as a graduate assistant coach for the Lady Bisons, Rosenthal became one of the youngest head coaches in NCAA Division I at the age of 25. He took over a program that had never won more than four matches in a season and immediately grasped the challenges facing him.

“We have built this program from the ground up,” Rosenthal said. “And we have done it the right way. Doing things the right way makes players want to be a part of your program. My biggest concern is building this program into one that will continue to be a success over a long period of time.”

“Something that stands out for me is the drive and determination of each one of our players to not only make her mark, but to be part of something bigger than just themselves,” Rosenthal said. “I feel it is crucial at this level that the play-ers realize they are not just joining a team, but they’re joining a family.”

Rosenthal’s 18 years of volleyball experience spans the country, allowing him the ability to draw from many different forums.

Born in Burbank, Calif., Rosenthal got his first taste of the sport of volleyball on the West Coast. When his family moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., he spearheaded a drive to add volleyball to the varsity programs at his high school.

His West-Coast roots led him back to the “Golden State” for college where con-tinued his love for the game by playing club volleyball at Pepperdine. Rosenthal

went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pepperdine Universi-ty in Malibu, Calif., before earning a Master of Business Administra-tion degree from Lipscomb.

Rosenthal and his wife, Kate, live in Nashville. They have a daughter, Jake; and a son, Jack.

Page 5: 2011 Lipscomb Volleyball NCAA Tournament Postseason Guide

A former standout for the Lady Bisons volleyball program, Pease was named a graduate assistant coach in August 2011.

“We’re excited to have Jake join the staff,” remarked Rosenthal. “Obviously, (it’s a great thing) anytime you can add a former All-American to your staff who knows our program inside and out.”

Pease joins the Lipscomb coach-ing staff after a stellar career in purple and gold in which she was named a two-time honor-able mention All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Along with her All-America honors, Pease also earned 2010 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year honors for her play

on the court.

“There’s no doubt she’s going to bring an extra level,” noted Rosenthal. “We’ve had some great work over the years and then adding one more coach to that

assistant coacHes samantHa suLLiVan/Jake peaseSamantha Sullivan returns in 2011 as a full-time assistant to head volleyball coach Brandon Rosenthal.

Named the first full-time assistant in the summer of 2010, Sullivan served as a student assistant and graduate assistant from 2007 to 2009.

“Sam has been with our program now for seven years as a player and coach, so needless to say she knows our program inside and out,” remarked Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal. “She continues to do a great job of helping this program evolve with innovative ideas and meth-ods. Throughout the past couple seasons she has been a true measure of what this program

stands for. Our success is a direct reflection to her dedication and hard work to always get the job done. Sam is someone that I truly trust and count on to make tough decisions. She is a great balance for me and is always looking to push this program.

Sullivan was a setter for two seasons for the Lady Bisons in 2005 and 2006. She transferred to Lipscomb after playing two seasons for Pierce College in Los Angeles. In only two years with the Lady Bisons, Sullivan managed to make her mark on the Lipscomb Volleyball program. She is currently the second all-time leader in assists with 2,226. Senior Stephine Pease holds the assists record at Lipscomb with 3,910.

Rosenthal likes the way Sullivan can relate to the girls and the way the team responds to her.

“It is exciting. She has a wonderful rapport with the girls. I think that is probably

one of those things that doesn’t get enough emphasis especially after winning championships.”

Sullivan, a native of Simi Valley, Calif., started playing volleyball in the sixth grade. She played for Simi Valley High School and started playing club volleyball her sophomore year of high school. She spent one year with the Thunder Volley-ball Club and played two seasons for the Santa Monica Beach Club.

In 2007 Sullivan was a student assistant working with the volleyball team, serv-ing on the staff that helped guide the Lady Bisons to the Atlantic Sun Confer-ence Tournament Championship and their first berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Sullivan also provided play-by-play as an announcer for Lipscomb’s volleyball matches on A-Sun TV.

Sullivan has also been active as a coach in club volleyball. She coached for the Nashville One Volleyball Club this past year, the first season ever for the team. She coached the 18s team with Tony Howell, an assistant coach at Belmont University, guiding the team to the nationals.

“In the club scene Sam has done a nice job over the past couple of years of developing her own coaching style” noted Rosenthal. “It is great to see her out there coaching her own team and watching the little things that she emphasizes.”

The daughter of Sherry Sullivan and Doug Priess, she has three sisters, Michelle Sullivan, Monique Buschel and Cori Turley and one brother, Kirk Priess.

Recently engaged to Kevin Crane, Sullivan graduated from Lip-scomb in December 2007 with a psychology degree and education minor.

is going to add to our ability to not only coach, but also recruit. Jakes brings this enthusiasm, this energy, this passion. Everyone that knows Jake or knows of her knows what kind of energy she brings.

A four-year starter for the Lady Bisons, Pease is no stranger to the coaching front having been the co-head coach for the Nash-ville One 14U team where she led the club to the 2011 Nationals and a fifth-place finish in the event held in Atlanta. As a head coach in 2009, Pease also led the Head Impact 15U team to nationals along with a 2008 nationals ap-pearance with the Impact 14U squad as an assistant coach. Pease has also worked extensively in the Nashville area teaching lo-cal youth setters in private lessons as well as helping with the Lipscomb camps every summer.
