In this dream, he finds strange volumes of very old books, some bound in pigskin with strange copper engravings, in a previously unknown wing of his house. Unbeknownst to him, this was to be the start of a long engagement with this exceedingly old tradition. At the end of his life, Jung claimed that alchemy gave modern depth-psychology a historical context and provided confirmation for his discoveries about the psyche. This lecture will be a very basic, beginners approach to alchemy. With the help of images, fundamental notions of alchemy will be presented along with their relevance to depth-psychology. Examples of the use of alchemical concepts in analytical practice will be discussed, along with the relevance of alchemy to Christianity, science, and contemporary consciousness. John Hoedl is currently the president, and a regular presenter, for the Edmonton Jung Forum Association. He is the vice president of the Western Canadian Association of Jungian Analysts and is also a founding member of the newly formed International Society for Psychology as the Discipline of Interiority. John has lectured in various Canadian cities as well as Zurich, Switzerland on a variety of psychologically related topics. His thesis, completed at the C.G. Jung Institute, is entitled: Alchemy and Analytical Psychology.
