Andrew J. M. Boulton (Universities of Manchester, UK)Prof. Andrew James Michael Boulton is currently a professor at University of Manchester and University ofMiami. His academic interest has been in the areas of complications of diabetes, particularly the diabeticfoot disease and diabetic nephropathy. He has written over 400 articles and participated as a co-author of 8relevant books. Professor Boulton was the editor of the "Diabetic Medicine" from 1991 to 1995. After servingas a president of the "Diabetic Foot Study Group" of EASD and the "Foot Wound Interest Group" of ADA, he isnow a vice-president of EASD. At this symposium, Professor Boulton will give a presentation on recentresearch trends, changes in treatment and prospects on diabetic foot disease with a title of “An update onthe diabetic foot for 2011.”

Philipp E. Scherer (UT Southwestern Medical Center, USA)Prof. Philipp Scherer is a director of Touchstone Diabetes Center, UT Southwestern Medical center. As aworldwide leading scientist, Dr. Scherer has been working on the integrated physiology of the adipocyteand the impact on whole body energy homeostasis, inflammation and cancer. He is one of pioneers toidentify adipocyte-derived factors (adipokines) and adipocyte physiology. Especially, he has cloned“adiponectin” and has elucidated the downstream signaling of adiponectin in the regulation of carbohydrateand lipid metabolism. Recently, his research team has demonstrated that adiponectin also plays a role incancer cell growth and survival. In this presentation, he will discuss the impact of adipokines on liverphysiology.
