Steve Smith Charity ChallengeFormer Michigan State All-American Steve Smith announced his NBA retirement in 2005 at MSU’s Clara Bell Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center, which opened in 1998 after Smith donated $2.5 million to the

facility. The gift was the largest gift ever by a professional athlete to any college or university. A native of Detroit, Smith scored 13,430 points in 14 NBA seasons, averaging 14.3 points per game. An NBA All-Star in 1998, he won the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 1998 and the NBA Sportsmanship Award in 2002. In 2003, Smith earned an NBA Championship ring

with the Spurs. In 2001, Smith was inducted into the Michigan State Athletics Hall of Fame, which is housed at the Smith Center.

The George Webster Scholarship Fund was establishedtoprovidefinancialassistanceforformerMSU athletes who were not able to graduate from Michigan State after participating on various sports teams. Earning his college degree meant a lot to former MSU football legend George Webster who returned to MSU many years after his professional career to earn enough credits to graduate. Webster felt strongly that we should not forget those who represented us through Spartan sports once their playing days are over. This scholarship helps pay tuition and fees for former players who come back to campus to complete their MSU degree requirements.
