As Chairman of the Gold Coast Academy of Sport (GCAS), it gives me great pleasure to present this report for 2011 – the organisation’s second full year of operation.

The academy is a not for profit organisation and while it is young, its values are “old school”. Our values are simple: Achieve your best in every aspect of life; Excel in everything you do; Inspire others and yourself by your deeds; and last but not least Respect yourself, the gifts and opportunities you’ve been given and those around you. The academy is committed to equipping athletes as individuals to develop their abilities on the sports field and for life in the modern world.

This year over 150 athletes participated in 9 sports programs and over 200 athletes were involved in various come’n’try programs. This was a remarkable increase from the 4 sports programs and around 100 athletes who were involved the previous year. This outstanding level of growth in the first independent regional academy of sport in Queensland is a testament to the vision of my founding board of directors and staff, a generous level of sponsorship support and increasing community interest and participation in the programs on offer.

The academy is aiming to include programs in a responsible and sustainable way for more mainstream sports and others that will benefit from ‘value-added’ support in the existing athletic pathway. With the Gold Coast having been announced as the host city of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, participation by Commonwealth Games sports and athletes from these sports in academy programs will be encouraged even more in the years to come.

The second annual Academy Awards presentation evening was held at the RACV Royal Pines Resort on Wednesday 2nd November. Over 300 VIP guests, scholarship athletes, parents, coaches and squad managers attended. All athletes received a certificate of graduation and many fine athletes received specific awards in their chosen sport. Daniel Coleman (triathlon and future stars north) was the recipient of the Male Athlete of the Year Award, Katelyn Simpson (future stars north) was presented with the Female Athlete of the Year for a consecutive year and Tiana Beakey (golf) was honoured with the Chairman’s Award. A highlight of the evening was the attendance of special guest athlete and triple world surf lifesaving ironman champion Shannon Eckstein. Shannon met with the coaches and athletes and was interviewed by the master of ceremonies Mike Rabbitt from NBN television.

The GCAS once again entered a Golf squad into the Academy Games in Armidale. The Gold Coast region had the leading female athlete in Tiana Beakey and was the runner-up in the team’s event – a wonderful result. Planning is in place to take teams to the event in Wollongong (Illawarra region) in 2012 should the logistics and finances allow.

The visionary support of the founding group of business partners – Gold Coast City Council and Business GC, Greater Building Society, RACV Royal Pines Resort, NBN television, Sea and Gold FM and Griffith University is providing the resources necessary to support the operations of the academy. The multiple-year sponsorship pledged by these organisations is allowing the board of directors to plan ahead with a far greater sense of security.

On behalf of the Gold Coast Academy of Sport board of directors, I would like to thank the Directors of Instruction, program managers and other volunteers for your commitment and administration of an increased number of sports programs. The academy has involved highly experienced coaches and the mentoring up and coming coaches is another important role the academy hopes to provide.

To my fellow board members, office staff at the Carrara Sports Complex, supporting State Government Local Sport and Recreation Coordinators and other volunteers, I thank you for sharing your expertise to further establish the operations. Managing Director Ian Robilliard of Academy partner the Central Coast Academy of Sport has continued to share his experience of establishing the highly successful academy of sport in that region of NSW. Through this partnership, the GCAS is increasingly included in plans of the wider regional academy of sport network that extends across New South Wales and other states of Australia.

The GCAS has the ability to effect and be a part of the change that is taking place in one of the fastest growing population corridors in Australia. It will continue to support the Gold Coast City Council’s bold strategy for the future and the QLD State Government’s objective to develop the healthiest citizens in the nation.

When the Gold Coast Academy of Sport launched in October 2009 at the RACV Royal Pines Resort, few could have imagined how many additional opportunities in sport could be created and how quickly the operations of the academy would be expanded.

In particular, 2011 was simply a remarkable year of development for the Gold Coast’s own regional academy of sport. The number of athletes and programs supported more than doubled. The benefits on and off the field of the ‘value-added’ training and core education in sport further materialised with many outstanding achievements of the athletes shared later in this report. A measurable reflection of the growth was the increased number of monthly unique users and hits on the www.goldsport.com.au website. Traffic increased steadily over the year with the highest number of 1073 unique visitors in the month of November generating 126,000 hits on the website and newly linked Facebook page.

Robert Thompson as the full-time Executive Officer was supported by the inclusion of State Government funded Local Sport and Recreation Coordinators Ty Chapman and Eva Van Groningen in a part-time capacity to the GCAS. The contracting of marketing consultant Mick Ellison as the Manager of Commercial Operations in the latter stages of the year is assisting the academy to ensure the needs of existing sponsors are adequately met. Mick is also providing even greater potential for additional sponsorship in the future.

In summary, the support staff, work experience students and volunteers in the office and at major events allowed for increasingly streamlined public operations.

One of the most significant outcomes from this year was the announcement of enhanced and on-going three year funding from the Gold Coast City Council and Business GC. The Economic and Development Department of the Council agreed to provide sufficient funding to allow for the actioning of the strategic business plan documented to the end of 2014.

The appointment of Local Sport and Recreation Coordinators, an active inclusion funding grant for a program and a ‘Smoke Free’ grant for a training camp is further recognition from the QLD State Government of the current and future potential of the academy to deliver meaningful sports programs.

There were many other highlights including the hosting of an improved Corporate Golf Day with sponsored holes and the participation of the Golf athletes together with the corporate sponsors.

The support of the Gold Coast District Rugby League continued with adequate shared office space at the Carrara Sports Complex. With the Junior Rugby League administration having now relocated to alternative premises, the opportunity exists for the GCAS to have its own functional independent office facility. The Carrara Sports Complex is the preferred location because it is a hub of general sports development on the Gold Coast and will be venue for the opening ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The GCAS would like to recognise the Gold Coast District Junior Rugby League for providing on-going funding to the GCAS Rugby League program.

Sponsorship renewals with the RACV Royal Pines Resort, NBN television, Sea and Gold FM, Griffith University, Runaway Bay Sports Leadership and Excellence Centre (Sports Super Centre) and E-Z-GO Golf Cars were all confirmed.

The GCAS supported its first overseas tour when members of the Football (soccer) squad travelled to New Zealand to play the Chelsea FC’s Asia-Pacific Academy squad. In December, the GCAS Rugby League squad for Indigenous and Non-Indigenous athletes travelled to the Sunshine Coast for a 3-day training camp.

The increasingly sound business position reported is a direct result of the committed Board of Directors with the support of the various sponsors who are recognised. We would like to express our thanks to Hon Mick Veivers, Gavin Kirkman, Bob Hagley, Glynis Nunn-Cearns, Professor Kristine Toohey, Mike Jones and Mark Holton for your involvement, dedication and professionalism to ensure the academy fulfilled the requirements of the business plan. Support and advice was readily offered if requested.

We would particularly like to thank the trusted Board members for the privileged positions you have created and to which we have been appointed. With the support of the Central Coast Academy of Sport and the experience of the founding two years of GCAS operation, the possibilities are endless for athlete and business development and on to the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast Academy of Sport has a clear model of Board involvement. The GCAS operates under the direction of a Board of Directors with each director allocated a specific portfolio. The involvement of the Board has been well maintained and is based on requests made by management staff.

The role of the Board is to have primary responsibility as to the strategic development of the business without ‘hands on’ management. In addition to regular review and planning meetings, the Board completed a comprehensive analysis of the vision, mission and aims of the organisation. The outcomes are to be presented in a ‘culture’ document.

The Gold Coast Academy of Sport has a unique strategic business plan for the period 2010-2014. It outlines a number of operational performance measures that allows the organisation to grow in accordance with the plan.

A review of these operational measures includes:

Administration

2011 was the second year of the strategic development plan for the period 2010-2014. This document complements directly to the wider regional Academy of Sport network in NSW and further afield.

The GCAS is introducing a collective approach to sports development in a regional area. This is a model that is likely to be replicated in other regions of Queensland in the years to come, particularly given the successful introduction of a regional academy on the Gold Coast. With the GCAS being a direct partner of the Central Coast Academy of Sport and an associate of other regional academies interstate, the commercial opportunities and collective goodwill are able to be extended beyond local borders.

Robert Thompson completed his second year as the Executive Officer. This position receives significant remote and face to face support from the Central Coast Academy of Sport with Ian Robilliard as Managing Director and Luke Tucker assisting in securing sponsorship and developing the sport programs. The ability to market better the operations of the Academy has been improved with the appointment of Mick Ellison as the contracted Manager – Commercial Operations. This level of staffing is adequate for the moment. It is likely that the number of programs will increase and more program staff will be required.

In the interim, the academy has joined a cluster of other grassroots sporting organisations to secure the part-time services of Ty Chapman and Eva Van Groningen as Local Sport and Recreation Coordinators. This is a State Government initiative through the Jobs Plan scheme to supply up to 100 additional employees in sport across the state over the next 2-3 years. Ty’s area of focus in his allocated time with the academy was in program administration and the submission of funding applications. Eva provided support to upgrading the website, introducing new social media applications and public relations at major events.

Finance and Assets

It is very pleasing to be able to report the sound financial figures as audited to the standards required by accounting firm Macquarie Partners. In a year where the global financial landscape remained tight and businesses were generally conservative towards sponsorship, the GCAS was able to grow its number of programs and further secure its financial position through a number of proven fiscal measures. The financial performance of the academy is being constantly reviewed and justified by the executive staff and the board of directors.

There was a 54% growth in revenue owing to increased funding ($469,775 in 2011 to $304,643 in 2010) and a 261% increase in cost of sales ($125,813 in 2011 to $48,146 in 2010) justified by the significant increase in the number of programs and athletes serviced. After a relatively small net profit of just $23,737 in 2010, $57,249 was achieved in 2011 through comprehensive fiscal measures. This is allowing the GCAS to consider expanding its operations to match the increased amount of administration required. There was an expected 46% increase in total expenditure ($412,526 in 2011 to $280,906 in 2010) and a 58% increase in total equity ($154,784 in 2011 to $97,535 in 2010) providing increased security for the on-going operations of the Academy.

The financial statements reflect the true value of all in-kind sponsorships and advertising agreements. These amounts are included as both income and expenditure along with the necessary cash contributions to fund the essential operations.

While these measurable increases are pleasing to report, if the academy is to expand with additional staff to better service the athletes, additional sources of income will need to be found. The hosting of the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018 has the potential to be of a financial and facility benefit to the academy in the future.

The payment of modest honorariums and a high level of community volunteer support mean there was an athlete levy of no more than $330 (including GST payable) to join a year-round program and receive significant benefits from quality coaching, uniforms and core education seminars from experts in the field. This represents outstanding value for money for the level of service provided.

Griffith University recently joined the other founding business partners in supporting the academy for a multiple year period which is greatly appreciated. These longer time frames allow the academy to plan financially with a far greater sense of security. The GCAS is able to receive donations (as a tax deduction to donors) through the Federal Government’s Australian Sports Foundation (ASF). $1815 was received (increase of 40% from $1,100 in 2010). It is hoped that more individual donors will see the Academy as a most worthy cause.

To all business partners, corporate supporters and other donors, the academy offers its most sincere thanks. Without this level of support, the GCAS would not have been able to make such a significant expansion in the sports marketplace of the Gold Coast.

Sports Programs

Nine sports programs (increase from 4 in 2010) were offered including Golf, Future Stars (Gold Coast north), Football (soccer), Triathlon, Rugby League for Indigenous athletes, Future Stars (Gold Coast south), Basketball, Volleyball (indoor) and Beach Volleyball, catering for 154 athletes. Together with an off-season Football program and other trial events, about 200 athletes benefitted from their association with the academy.

These athletes were exposed to expert coaching, practical skill development and core educational seminars. Topics included public speaking improvement, sports psychology, Greater Building Society ‘financial fitness’ seminars and nutrition for sport. Guest visits from high profile current and past sportspeople were also organised.

An academy ‘sports ambassador’ program sponsored by the Greater Building Society was introduced and offered a select group of 4 athletes additional opportunities in corporate skills training. All athletes were invited to apply by writing down in their own words why they would like to be selected. Alistair Davis, Jackson Hill, Dee Dee Russell and Katelyn Simpson entered applications and were selected by the board as the inaugural ambassadors. They were invited to attend a number of corporate functions on behalf of the academy and the Greater Building Society. They attended Civic Events for the 2018 Commonwealth Games bid and met with Olympic Gold medal swimmers and Gold Coast Hall of Fame inductees Grant Hackett and Giaan Rooney.

The academy is extremely fortunate to have experienced and qualified coaching staff who not only provide a significant amount of time but ensure that their programs are of the highest order. Many of the coaches have participated at elite levels of sport themselves. Their high level of technical coaching expertise offers a ‘point of difference’ for the programs.

A coaches conference was held prior to the awards night. This was an opportunity for the Board to thank the coaches for their efforts and for them to share ideas and discuss issues in common across all sports.

IT and Systems

The GCAS aims to have the most cutting edge IT platform possible including secure back-up of an ever increasing amount of data in multiple locations. A divisional council grant allowed for the purchase a high performance laptop computer and quality colour printer. This was required to maintain and upgrade the systems to remain compatible with the growing numbers of partners the academy communicates with electronically.

The academy website is a major way of communication with the community and the world. 10,000 unique users generated over one million hits on the website. (Increase from 5,810 unique users generating 579,111 hits in 2010). A sports program ‘hotline’ continued to provide interested athletes and parents with the most up to date information about the status of each academy sports program.

Supporting the website is an increasing level of social media which is an emerging trend in business. A Gold Coast Academy of Sport (GCAS) Facebook page gained 170 ‘Likes’ in its first 3 months, sending regular updates directly to the personal ‘Wall’ of those who ‘Liked’ the page. The GCAS is also supported by its own unique Sports Locker system. Instant SMS messaging from the academy office delivered instant important messages such

as late changes to training sessions. This service is able to provide members of the academy with a cost effective, dynamic secure social network. Several coaches used this medium to post educational bulletins to the athletes. Members are provided with a user name and password to be able to communicate securely with one another and with their coach. The academy was the first organisation in Queensland to introduce this ‘cutting edge’ system of communication. The academy will aim to further develop this service along with the website and other forms of social media in 2012.

Commercial operations

The GCAS is using a very sound investment model that has proven successful since 2004 with the Central Coast Academy of Sport. All major business partnerships were renewed providing an ongoing and solid financial backing. The contracting of media consultant Wayne Hickson for a media blitz in the first 3 months of the year greatly assisted the GCAS to achieve this result.

The ability to plan ahead financially is most important for organisational stability. The acquisition of additional business partners is a high priority in order to further widen the financial base of support. Increased corporate sponsorship and development of the investment model will be required if the GCAS is to reach its strategic plans. Mick Ellison as Manager of Commercial Operations has been contracted to focus on this aspect of the business.

Special Events

The hosting of special events for the GCAS community is a major focus and a point of difference from regular sports programs. A Mid-Year Appreciation Function, Corporate Golf Day and Annual Awards Presentation Evening were all very well supported. These special events aimed to bring the community together to showcase the achievements of the organisation and the athletes for the business partners and sponsors. The efforts and achievements of the athletes and coaches were able to be presented to a wider audience than otherwise would be possible.

The GCAS was pleased to be able to take up the invitation to enter a squad of golfers at the annual Academy Games in Armidale in April. The squad joined nearly 900 athletes from other regional academies for 3-days of friendly competition.

The GCAS attended group meetings as a member of the Gold Coast City Council’s Sports Fusion network. It continued its associate membership of the QSPORT network with wider Queensland and representatives attended the Queensland Sports Awards Function in Brisbane. Events such as the Gold Coast City Council’s Science Week Fair, State Government’s Sport Super Sign-On Day, Griffith University’s career day and Volunteering Gold Coast’s Awards Day were also supported.

Administration

The GCAS would like to recognise the Gold Coast City Council for their support in providing an adequate administration centre for the operations of the business. The academy is currently seeking to expand its temporary office location at the Carrara Sports Complex following the relocation of the Gold Coast District Rugby League. The GCAS has been offered a workstation at their new administration location of Rugby League to maintain the contact necessary with the shared Local Sport and Recreation Coordinators. Up until now, selected office equipment has been shared. However, these expenses will now be incurred by the GCAS.

The concept of a purpose built and flexible administration centre domiciled within the Carrara Sports Complex for corporate functions, training rooms, storage and additional staffing would be a very important development in the growth of the academy.

Finance and Assets

While the GCAS is pleased to report a relatively sound financial position, the board and staff of the organisation will be looking to grow the amount of income further to be able to effectively implement the strategic plan. This process will no doubt incur increased expenses but it will also generate new opportunities to invest in the GCAS, allowing it to invest back into the sports programs. Additional business partners, new program sponsors, official venues and suppliers and tax deductible donations will all be further encouraged in 2012.

The GCAS joined the CCAS to order a large number of required uniforms for the programs and to have readily available stock in storage. While this was a significant upfront expense, ordering in this cooperative way reduces the costs of each unit. In the long run it results in cost savings to both organisations. It also allowed the GCAS to on-sell merchandise. The quality and level of re-stocking of uniforms will be reviewed.

Future Developments

The receipt of additional business level sponsorship and/or state government operational funding would provide increased confidence in the role of the academy with mainstream and other sports that are yet to establish a ‘value-added’ sports program. Additional funds would be directed to the employment of sports program staff and developing the benefits to be delivered in the programs. The cost of athletes levies required would be reduced for programs as would the levies required to send teams to attend the Academy Games.

Sport Management

It is anticipated that up to 10 sports programs will be offered by the GCAS in 2012. This will include the following sports; Golf (25 athletes), Future Stars (30 up from 23), Football/Soccer (40-50), Triathlon 20 (up from 14), Rugby League (25 up from 20), Volleyball (indoor and beach 43) and Basketball (24 up from 10). At least one new program is likely to be launched by June. 170-180 registered athletes and over 200 individuals including trial programs will be a major undertaking and a robust target of participation.

The GCAS will be taking a squad of at least 7 Golf athletes to compete in the Academy Games in Wollongong from April 13-15. There are plans to take teams in other sports such as Basketball depending on sponsorship and availability of the athletes. The cost of taking a Golf squad to compete in the Games will be $8-$9,000. While this is significant, the academy will provide funding relief to athletes to provide them with additional competitive opportunities and the experience of a lifetime. The event is a great introduction to what is expected of elite senior athletes; travelling as a squad, cheering and supporting their team and the excellent play of others. Walking into an Academy Games opening ceremony with about 1000 other athletes is an occasion all academy athletes are encouraged to experience if their sport is offered.

IT and Systems

Maintaining and advancing the IT platform to state of the art levels is an ongoing challenge. The GCAS is embracing as much as is possible the current technologies in order to keep pace with the various changes in commonly used IT. The introduction of e-newsletters, more widely used social networking sites and further video summaries are developments

being considered. The costs incurred in upgrading the website rather than simply scheduled maintenance will require increasing the budget allocation. The GCAS will aim to keep updated content on the website and extend the length of visits by each visitor.

Marketing and Promotion

Further developing the recognition of the GCAS brand and understanding the supportive role the academy plays in the Gold Coast sports industry will be a major focus. Having an increasingly recognisable logo and a ‘golden opportunities through sport’ tagline will permeate all marketing and promotion. An even greater focus of the achievement of the athletes will be promoted on the website. Articles and images will be updated as regularly as possible. NBN television and Southern Cross media (90.9 Sea FM and 92.5 Gold FM) kindly provided a combined $130,000 worth of media exposure in the form of television commercials and radio promotions. Agreement extensions will ensure these high rating media channels will be continued in 2012 and beyond. The academy would also like to recognise Gold Coast Bulletin newspaper for the print exposure provided. The GCAS worked cooperatively with the Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame and the Bulletin to publish a colour lift-out in February 2011 titled ‘Gold Coast Sport 2010’. This collector’s item booklet will become an annual publication and will summarise the efforts of the Gold Coast’s sporting elite alongside the GCAS athletes. Thank you to all companies who secured advertising in this publication to make this project a reality.

The Board is planning to combine the resources required for the Mid-Year Appreciation Function and the Awards Night into one large event combining the Awards Night followed by a new event to be known as ‘Celebrating Success’. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided for the whole GCAS community in the lobby of the RACV Royal Pines Resort directly following the Awards Night to be held in late October 2012.

The academy will continue to assist the community events of other organisations that have the best intentions of the athletes in mind. For example, the GCAS will join regional sporting providers and clubs in early February for the Department of Communities Super Sports Sign-On Day at Southport-Broadwater Parklands.

While the support of the funding business partners and corporate sponsors is much appreciated, several sponsorship ‘gaps’ still exist in the sponsorship matrix. The Board and staff will be working extremely hard to fill these gaps in order to continue to provide robust sports programs. The contracted Manager of Commercial Operations will increasingly will lead the marketing and promotional activities. All sponsorship and cost savings are directed to benefit the athletes within the sports programs.

Program Reports 2011 - GOLF

GOLF – Academy program tees-offTHE 2011 Golf squad inducted 25 male and female athletes aged 13 – 18 from 9 different local golf clubs. The sponsorship support of RACV Royal Pines Resort and E-Z-GO Golf cars assisted in providing high quality uniforms for the athletes in the squad and for those who represented the academy with distinction at the Academy Games in Armidale.

The Director of Instruction was three-time QLD PGA Coach of the Year and Chairman of the Australian PGA Mark Gibson. He was supported by professional coach Ian Jones for the training sessions. The program was fortunate to utilise the RACV Royal Pines Resort Driving Range and the course itself as the official venue for training. Skills testing, video/computer analysis and sport psychology for Golf supported the athletes existing training schedules at their home clubs. Handicap scores were regularly monitored and reduced significantly with practise and commitment.

Core education sessions on topics such as injury management, finding a mentor and future career pathways in Golf complemented the 20 practical sessions offered.

The program has the in-principle support of the Gold Coast Men’s and Women’s Associations and Golf Queensland. Curriculum advice, skills testing protocols and game preparation advice were offered to the athletes in line with the recommendations of these governing bodies.

The squad was divided into introductory and advanced groups to cater better for ability and handicap differences. Advice was given for improvement in between the weekly sessions.

A third year ‘alumni’ program is being introduced in 2012 with an even greater on-course component to be included for these athletes. The Golf program has been a model for the integration of an academy program into the existing athlete pathway of a sport.

FUTURE STARS – Developing Future ChampionsTHE Future Stars program is open to athletes aged 13-23 who do not meet the eligibility requirements of existing GCAS programs or for those who participate in sports that are not currently offered.

The Future Stars program is individually focussed and is based on a high level of personal interaction with the athletes. Individual gymnasium and personal training support together with regular core education seminars were all offered as part of the program. Athletes must have represented their chosen sport at a high level or be aspiring to such levels with the assistance of the GCAS.

The program expanded to cater for 23 athletes who reside in the northern and southern regions of the Gold Coast. A northern program ran from February to August at the Runaway Bay Sport and Leadership Excellence Centre at Runaway Bay. A new southern program was established and this began in September at the Fenix Fitness Club at Robina.

The athletes in both centres had access to a wide variety of entitlements to assist them further in the development in their chosen sport. The athletes were provided with individual access to gym memberships with unlimited visits, physiotherapy and sport psychology support. The athletes were advised in time management to utilise these services when it best suited their existing training schedules. All athletes were expected to attend core education seminars once a month allowing them to interact as a group on topics such as nutrition, stretching and warm-up, sport psychology and media skills training.

FOOTBALL (Soccer) – Kicking aheadTHE 2011 Football program provided over 100 hours of ‘value-added’ quality practical Soccer training and core education enhancing the skill level and knowledge of over 50 athletes who participated in the main winter program and off-season come’n’try sessions.

Venues from Labrador to Palm Beach were used to spread the program throughout the Gold Coast Football community and improve the ease of access to sessions. Following the conclusion of the season proper and given the high level of interest and support from the coaches and athletes, the program continued throughout the off-season until December. During this period, 20 athletes travelled to New Zealand to play matches against the Chelsea Football Club’s Asia-Pacific Academy squad. Life Skills sessions on topics such as social media in Football were also offered to the athletes by Griffith University.

Twice weekly sessions were organised to complement club based training, regional training sessions and weekend club matches. The coaching staff was led by Director of Instruction Gary Scott who brings 30 years of playing and coaching experience to the program. Gary was supported by numerous assistant coaches including Clint Savage, visiting coaches from the Chelsea and Watford Clubs in the UK and coaches from Brisbane.

A school holiday day clinic with academy coaches from the Chelsea FC in the UK Premier League was a highlight and is planned to be offered again in 2012.

Towards the end of the season, selected academy athletes were invited to trial with the Gold Coast United academy squad. Opportunities like these provide further exposure to higher levels of participation. The GCAS will continue to support the participation of its athletes in local representative teams or club level competition.

Program Reports 2011 - TRIATHLON

TRIATHLON – ‘Hot spot’ of developmentTHE Gold Coast Academy of Sport Triathlon program received in-principle support from Triathlon Queensland, Triathlon Australia and the National High Performance Program. The inclusion of a regional academy program into the existing pathway for Triathlon is making the Gold Coast a ‘hot spot’ in the development of this growing sport.

The program was a combination of technical and skills–based training camps (including core education sessions) and additional training days complementing the athletes existing training and competitive schedules. The addition of an academy program is designed to offer local athletes even greater skills in the sport providing them with a competitive advantage for existing competitions and higher levels in the sport.

The Director of Instruction was sport scientist Chris Lang, a former regional academy athlete himself and current coach of some of the most elite athletes in Triathlon. Assistant coach was Jenny Alcorn, head coach of the Surfers Paradise Triathlon Club with extensive experience coaching from beginning athletes to the elite level.

Training for the squad included a comprehensive variety of swimming, cycling and running technique training together with core educational seminars in topics such as sport psychology and further opportunities in Triathlon.

Program Reports 2011 - RUGBY LEAGUE

RUGBY LEAGUE (developing Indigenous All-Stars) THE inspiration of the 2011 Rugby League program for Indigenous athletes was the NRL’s pre-season Indigenous versus All-Stars annual match at Skilled Park. This program developed the next generation of young Indigenous All-Stars to be even better equipped to perform in their own Gold Coast District Junior Rugby League team.

In-principle support from the Queensland Rugby League, Gold Coast Titans and Gold Coast District Junior Rugby League assisted a State Government Active Inclusion grant to fund the program. 13 ‘value-added’ quality practical Rugby League training and core education sessions enhanced the abilities of the 20 athletes who participated in the program. After 5 introductory training sessions, the program toured 8 junior clubs in the Gold Coast Junior League giving experience to coach beginner players and to join in with other athletes of their own age group.

The Director of Instruction was Indigenous mentor Sid Doyle who brings many years of playing and coaching experience to the program. Ably supporting Sid was assistant coach Kevin Thompson. The program ambassador was Indigenous All-Star Ryan James.

A highlight of the program was a launch at the Gold Coast Titans hosted by CEO Michael Searle. The athletes met Preston Campbell and Ryan James from the Indigenous All-Stars team. Later in the program, the athletes and their parents toured the Centre of Excellence and completed their League Safe Basic First Aid course.

To conclude the program, the Indigenous athletes were joined by many others to attend a 3-day training camp at the State Government’s Currimundi Be Active Recreation Camp on the Sunshine Coast. The program is planning to expand with the increased support of the Gold Coast District Junior Rugby League.

Program Reports 2011 - BASKETBALL

Basketball bounces into the Academy With the in-principle support of Basketball Queensland, Gold Coast Basketball and Seahawks GC Basketball, the GCAS Basketball program started with keen squad of athletes. Additional skill development sessions with a focus on technique improvement in the sport were offered.

All athletes (male and female) aged U/13-U/15 who are currently registered with a local Basketball association were invited to join the program when it began in October. Former Blaze Development Officer Sean Fernance is the Program Coordinator with the support of qualified coaches such as former NBL player Thalo Green, current Blaze assistant coach Mick Conlan and Gold Coast Blaze players who attended the training sessions to encourage the athletes. It is an aim of the academy to ultimately have a vibrant underpinning program for each of the Gold Coast teams in a national competition such as the Gold Coast Blaze NBL team.

The other point of difference for the Basketball program is the opportunity for inter-academy matches and the possibility of entering a Gold Coast Academy Basketball team into the Academy Games.

Spike of interest in Volleyball AN exciting development for the regional Academy this year was the development of ‘value-added’ trial programs for Volleyball (both Indoor and Beach). The academy also assisted in developing interest in the newly formed Gold Coast Volleyball Association.

Prior to the introduction of these programs, there were limited opportunities in the region for committed pre-elite athletes outside school hours. Quite remarkably, 43 keen athletes attended the skill and game development program and 16 teams joined the new local association competition at the St Hilda’s School Multi-Purpose Centre, Southport.

The Director of Instruction is former QAS athlete and coach Aaron Alsop. The Head Coach (indoor) is Andrew McCaskill who is the current Queensland senior women’s coach and has well over 100 games of international match experience.

A GCAS Beach Volleyball camp program was also trialled in December. The academy was fortunate to have high calibre coaches such as Olympic Gold medallist Natalie Cook, internationally renowned coach Steve Anderson and former American tour professional Eddie Stokes ready to develop of a keen squad of pre-elite Beach Volleyball athletes.

2011 Awards Night

Stars gather at Awards NightThe Awards Night recognises every scholarship athlete with a Graduation certificate. The awards recognise outstanding achievement and provide encouragement to selected athletes.The recipient of the 2011 Academy Male Athlete of the Year was Daniel Coleman. He showed his versatility and dedication by being a member of the Triathlon as well as the Future Stars North programs. In Triathlon he represented Australia as the youngest member of the team in the World Triathlon Championships in Beijing. As a special honour in 2011, he was awarded the coveted PIERRE de COUBERTIN award by the Queensland Olympic Council. This award recognises initiative, teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play through participation in a variety of sports.

The Gold Coast Academy of Sport’s Female Athlete of the Year Award was Katelyn Simpson from the Future Stars North program. Katelyn was selected in the Australian team to compete in the 1500 metres at the World Youth Championships in France. Katelyn made the final and ran a personal best. She was awarded a Queensland State Rising Star Award at the Hyundai Queensland Women’s Sports Star of the Year Awards.

The recipient of the Chairman’s Award was Tiana Beakey. At just 13, Tiana was the leading GCAS Golf athlete at the Academy Games and finished third overall in the tournament. She has now been offered a place in the Pro-Am at the LPGA Ladies Masters at the RACV Royal Pines Resort in recognition of her efforts in representing the Academy both on and off the Golf course.
