September 5 – Laurier at York, 1:00pmHead Coach: Warren Craney2010 Record: 0-8 (9th OUA)Laurier All-Time Record vs. York: 33-5-0Current Streak: Laurier 7 winsOutlook for 2011: The rebuild under Head Coach Warren Craney continues for the Lions this season as the team searches for their first win in nearly four years. Offensively, QB Nick Coutu will once again be under centre for the Lions with REC Jonelle Tolbert expected to see a majority of the passes come his way after leading the team in receiving a year ago. Linebacker Steven Reading will once again be a leader on defence for York as he has been near the top of the league in tackles for the last two season. Defensive End Patrick Russell looks to continue his solid play on the defensive line after picking up 15 tackles last year.Quote from Head Coach: “We are a very young team this year but loaded with talent and we expect to be more competitive this season. Our expectations for this team are high and the players will have to grow up on the field in a hurry, but the coaching staff feels they are ready and we are all looking forward to seeing them in action.”

September 10 – Windsor vs. Laurier, 7:00pmHead Coach: Joe D’Amore2010 Record: 2-6 (8th OUA)Laurier All-Time Record vs. Windsor: 35-11-2Current Streak: Laurier 4 winsOutlook for 2011: The Windsor Lancers will be a veteran team this season as they return 19 starters from 2010. On offence, the team will once again rely on QB Sam Malian who looks to bounce back from an injury-plagued season. Receiver Jordan Brescacin, a 2011 East West Bowl participant, highlights the receiving core while Nick Corrado anchors the offensive line. Defensively, the Lancers boast two East West participants in linebacker Akeem Whoner and defensive lineman Seamus Postuma, both of whom are keys in shutting down the oppositions run game.Quote from Head Coach: “We have a committed group of players who have work tirelessly over the last six months in preparation for the upcoming season. With a new coaching staff in place and some key new additions to the roster, our success will be directly tied to how fast we come together as a team.”

September 17 – Laurier at Queen’s, 1:00pmHead Coach: Pat Sheahan2010 Record: 3-5 (T-6th OUA)Laurier All-Time Record vs. Queen’s: 7-6-0Current Streak: Laurier 2 winsOutlook for 2011: After an up and down season following their Vanier Cup win in 2009, the Queen’s Gaels are a young team that promises to make noise in the OUA this year. QB Billy McPhee takes over the starting duties this year after Justin Chapdelaine moved to receiver in the off-season. Expect RB Ryan Granberg to get the majority of the carries in the backfield. On defence, a young core led by 2010 OUA Rookie of the Year Sam Sabourin and defensive lineman Frank Pankewich and John Miniaci promise to be much better than a year ago when the Gaels failed to knock off any of the league’s top teams. Quote from Head Coach: “Although we may have not had the same success from 2009, we certainly grew from our experience and will be able to transform that into stronger results this season. Our young core now has a full year of experience under their belt and I have every reason to believe we will be a contending team this year.” September 24 – Laurier vs. Western, 1:00pmHead Coach: Greg Marshall2010 Record: 7-1 (T-1st OUA)Laurier All-Time Record vs Western: 21-41-0Current Streak: Western 5 winsOutlook for 2011: The reigning OUA Champions will be looking to build on their season from a year ago after they were narrowly defeated by the eventual Vanier Cup champions, the Laval Rouge et Or, in the Uteck Bowl. Greg Marshall’s team will once again be guided by QB Donnie Marshall and the running back duo of Nathan Riva and Jerimy Hipperson, all of whom present different challenges for opposing defences. While the defence returns just six starters from 2010, Western boasts a talented defensive line, anchored by Mike Van Praet and David Lee.Quote from Head Coach: “We are excited about the prospects for this upcoming season. We return with a very experienced group of veterans and have some outstanding recruits, which will make for a competitive training camp. The OUA will be a very balanced conference and we open with Waterloo, McMaster and then Laurier so we need to come out of training camp ready to compete at our best.”

October 1 – Ottawa vs. Laurier (Homecoming), 1:00pmHead Coach: Jean-Philippe Asselin2010 Record: 7-1 (T-1st OUA)Laurier All-Time Record vs. Ottawa: 10-14-1Current Streak: Ottawa 3 winsOutlook for 2011: Ottawa’s first season under rookie head coach J.P. Asselin was nearly perfect for the Gee-Gees. The team cruised to top spot in the OUA and only a last-second field goal by Western prevented them from capturing the Yates Cup. However, many of the players that helped the team succeed last year will be gone and it will be up to a much younger squad to try and match last year’s success. Offensively, watch out for receiver Steven Hughes and running back Brendan Gillanders while linebacker Tyler Sawyer and defensive back Chris Daly will be key contributors on the defensive side of the ball.Quote from Head Coach: “I am very happy and honoured to be back as head coach for the uOttawa football team. It’s exciting to have the opportunity to keep building on what we achieved, and to keep working towards the ultimate goal of bringing home the Vanier Cup.”

October 6 – Laurier at Waterloo, 7:00pmHead Coach: Dennis McPhee2010 Record: N/ALaurier All-Time Record vs. Waterloo: 35-14-1Current Streak: Laurier 7 winsOutlook for 2011: Waterloo returns to the OUA this season after seeing their team suspended for the entire 2010 campaign. Despite missing an entire year of action, the Warriors will have a number of veteran players in their lineup who should help transition a team that brought in over 40 recruits in the offseason. Under centre, Waterloo boasts two fifth year pivots in Luke Balch and Evan Martin. REC Dustin Zender, who played for Laurier last year, returns to Waterloo for his final year of eligibility. Linebacker Brad Morton will run be a strong run stopper as will defensive linemen Aaron King and Djordje Gavrilovic.Quote from Head Coach: “It is great to be moving forward to a regular season now that we have brought scrutiny to a problem that needed to be scrutinized. We have a great group of young men who dedicated the past year to getting better, but we have a great group of recruits coming in. It’s going to be fun to have a competitive camp leading into the 2011 season.”

October 15 – McMaster vs. Laurier, 1:00pmHead Coach: Stefan Ptaszek2009 Record: 6-2 (3rd OUA)Laurier All-Time Record vs. McMaster: 39-13-1Current Streak: McMaster 1 winOutlook for 2011: After coming up short in the playoffs the last two season, McMaster will have a veteran squad seeking to finally get over the hump in 2011. On defence, fifth year linebacker Ryan Chmielewski leads the Marauders while OUA All-Star lineman Roberto Filice and Scott Caterine should give opposing quarterbacks trouble in the backfield. QB Kyle Quinlan returns for his fourth year and will guide a talented offensive unit that includes RB Joey Nemet as well as receievers Michael DiCroce and Matthew Peressini.Quote from Head Coach: “We have a tremendous amount of talent returning at the skill positions on offence and defence. Our linebackers, defensive backs, running backs, quarterbacks and receivers are a senior group and they can flat out make plays. The questions for us for 2011 are at the line of scrimmage. Our offensive line and defensive line has had some turnover and some graduation at those spots and how we fill those spots will dictate how we do.”

October 22 – Laurier at Guelph, 1:00pmHead Coach: Stu Lang2009 Record: 4-4 (T-4th OUA)Laurier All-Time Record vs. Guelph: 39-13-0Current Streak: Laurier 3 winsOutlook for 2011: One year after losing the the Golden Hawks in the OUA Quarter-finals, the Gryphons will be looking to build upon the success of last year. Chris Rossetti, who enters his third season with Guelph and second as the starting quarterback, will be expected to continue his development and should benefit from the addition of offensive coordinator Todd Galloway. His prime receiver will be fifth year Jedd Gardner, fresh off an appearance at the Toronto Argonauts’ training camp. On defence, the team has lost standout linebacker Adam Dunk. His presence will be replaced by Cameron Thorn on the defensive line as well as defensive back Mark Durigon, who has 11 interceptions with Guelph over the previous two seasons.

Gary has coached 34 football seasons at Laurier, with 19 as Defensive Coordinator. He was named the interim head coach midway through the 2002 season as a result of a labour

“#9 Mustangs Upset #6 Hawks”“Defence Tires in 36-plus minutes of play”by Ari Grossman

LONDON, Ont. - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks opened their 2010 season with a 46-1 thumping at the hands of the West-ern Mustangs in front of a crowd of 8,201 fans at TD Waterhouse Stadium.

The loss is the worst the team has seen against their rival the Stangs in the history of the program. Only twice has the team scored less against the purple-and-white, in 1982 and 1973 when the team was shutout.

“We’re a better team then the score shows up there today,” com-mented manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries post game to his team in the huddle. “They flat out beat us today, we made too many errors and too many mental mis-takes and they won all three phases of the game. They deserved to win. We’re a lot better than that.”

After a low scoring first quarter that saw the Hawks pick up their point on a wide field goal and Western earning their three on a 24-yard field goal, the Mustangs exploded with 25 points in the second tiring out and capitalizing on the Golden Hawk defence.

Mitchell Bosch (Langley, BC) and Samuel Aird (Ancaster, Ont.) led the team in tackles with nine and Bosch also picked up a sack on Marshall.

“It’s definitely not how we wanted to start the year,” said Bosch. “There are definitely pointers we can change and get better from and that’s what we’ve got to take away from it.”

Western quarterback Donnie Marshall exploded for a strong rookie performance. The son of head coach Greg Marshall led his team with 183 yards in the air on 12 completions while also adding 65 on the ground and only being intercepted once by Hawk Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.).

“We expected to be on the field a lot,” said Rapanaro referring to the fact that the offence was on the field for just over 24-min-utes of the game. “The offence usually takes a little longer to get going at the beginning of the season.”

The second half saw the Mustangs add two more touchdowns including one off of an interception as well as a field goal and a single.

Golden Hawk rookie pivot Shane Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J.) finished the game completing 7 of 18 for 64 yards before Evan Pawliuk (Kingston, Ont.) stepped in and went 2 for 7. Anton Bennett (Toronto, Ont.) led the team on the ground with 79 yards on 15 touches.

Overall the Hawks netted 85 yards, while Western picked up 208.

Laurier next travels to Hamilton to face the McMaster Maraud-ers on Labour Day for a 1:00 p.m. start. The team then plays their first home game on September 11th at 7:00 p.m. against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. “Hawks fall to Marauders 26-24”“Marauders score 26 in second half for win”by Ari Grossman

HAMILTON, Ont. - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks saw their 22-point lead slip away as the McMaster Marauders (2-0) scored 26 points in the second half beating Laurier (0-2) 26-24 in front of 5,630 fans at Ron Joyce Stadium.

Running back Anton Bennett (Toronto, Ont.) had an opportunity to put the Hawks ahead with only 25-seconds left in the game but fumbled the ball attempting to cross the goal line. The soph-omore carried 16 times for 53 yards throughout the day as the team’s leading rusher.

“I’m proud of our football team, we played right until the last second against the wind. We had to move the football and we did and we deserved better,” commented manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries post-game. “This game is behind us, there’s lots of football left. We’ll go right back to the drawing board and keep working hard. We grew up a lot today.”

Up 24-0 at one point, #10 nationally ranked McMaster scored three touchdowns and picked up a safety to steal the lead away from the purple-and-gold before the Hawks created the drive that came just short.

Quarterback Evan Pawliuk (Kingston, Ont.) took the helm of the offence this week and finished the game completing 21 of his 37 attempts for 279 yards. Pawliuk led the Hawks to the goal line standoff late in the game on a 13-play 85-yard drive. Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) was the preferred receiver through the contest, picking up 96 yards on six catches including the only offensive major on the day on a 33-yard reception.

“It’s part of the defence, when there is a minute left they go into prevent. It’s our character, like last year against Ottawa we had to make a final drive down the field and we did it. That’s what the Hawks do,” said Heap on the final Golden Hawk drive. “I don’t really know why we stalled in the second half, we’ll have to take

a look at the film.”

The win for the Marauders is the first against the Hawks since November 8th, 2003 when Laurier fell in the Yates Cup 41-17 at Ivor Wynne Stadium.

The Golden Hawk defence had a solid first half only allowing 65 yards on 30 plays while the offence was able to capitalize with 211 on 31 plays. As the game progressed, the Marauders were able to adjust putting up 329 yards of offence to Laurier’s 146. The majority of those yards came from Marauder pivot Kyle Quinlan who passed for 264 yards in the second half.

“They made a couple adjustments at half and they took us out of our Blitz package which played a big part in their success in the second,” said Hawks defensive back Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niag-ara Falls, Ont.) who picked up a fumble from Quinlan and ran it 60 yards into the endzone for the second purple-and-gold touch-down. “We played real well, with some exceptions. There are still things we need to fix, we’re not perfect yet, but we’ll get there.”

The Golden Hawks return home to host the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, September 11th at 7 p.m. in week three OUA action. Tickets for the contest are available online at http://tickets.laurierathletics.com

WATERLOO, Ont. - Wilfrid Laurier’s men’s football team (1-2) earned their first win of the season with a 37-6 victory over the visiting University of Toronto Varsity Blues (0-3).

The Golden Hawks Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.) got the home team on the board early in the first quarter with a 14-yard receiving touchdown from Shane Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J.). It was also Kelly’s first passing OUA football major.

Running back Anton Bennett (Toronto, Ont.) scored his first majors as well. He picked up one on a five yard rush in the first and the second to put the Hawks up 26-3 towards the end of the first half.

Nathan Hawkes (Kitchener, Ont.) also put in a strong perfor-

mance going 3-4 on field goal attempts. His long was a 37-yarder, while he also made attempts from 29 and 31 yards.

The Blues scores both came on field goals from Andrew Lomas-ney (Toronto, Ont.), who went 2-2 on the night. He hit 22-yarder to get Toronto on the board late in the first and then hit another 22-yarder early in the fourth quarter to score all the Blues points.

On defence, safety Mitch Nicholson (Grand Haven, Mi.) led the way with two interceptions on the night. Team captain Mitchell Bosch (Langly B.C.) also had a pick for the Hawks total of three. Bosch picked up 3.5 tackles (1 solo, 5 assisted) and two knock-downs in the match.

“Hawks hand Lions 68-14 loss”“Heap becomes Laurier’s all-time leading punt returner”by Mike Whitehouse

WATERLOO, Ont. - Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) became Lauri-er’s all-time leading punt returner with 1368 career yards, passing Stefan Ptaszek as the Golden Hawks (2-2) defeated the York Lions (0-4) 68-14 at University Stadium.

The Golden Hawks got on the scoreboard early and often against the Lions with starting quarterback Evan Pawliuk (Kingston, Ont.) hitting a wide open Mark Surya (Burlington, Ont.) for a 42 yard major. Surya had his best game for Laurier picking up 66 yards on three receptions.

The purple and gold continued to roll from there with a blocked kick and recovery by Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) for the Hawks second major of the match. Dillon Heap concluded the first quar-ter with a 22 yard touchdown reception to give the home team a 26-0 lead.

In the second quarter it was the running game that provided the scoring for the Hawks. Anton Bennett (Toronto, Ont.) picked up two majors, both on one yard runs, while Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.) put on a show running for 24 yards and a touch-down. Josh Pirie (Cambridge, Ont.) scored Laurier’s final major of the half with a five yard dash.

The Lions got on the scoreboard late in the first, when backup quarterback Darren Frank (Pickering, Ont.) went to a no-huddle offence and drove the ball 74 yards on six plays to score the major before the break. Frank replaced Nick Coutu (St. Catharines, Ont.) early in the match when the starting quarterback left the game with an injury. Jolene Tolbert (Mississauga, Ont.) scored the major on a 22 yard reception.

Laurier kicker Nathan Hawkes (Kitchener, Ont.) had a strong day hitting field goals from 38 and 35 yards as well as kicking for 568 yards on 10 kickoffs.

The second half consisted primarily of defensive scores. York’s

Steven Reading, who led the Lions with 10.5 tackles (6 solo, 9 assisted), picked off Dan Daigle and scored the visitors second major of the game. Laurier would scored again late in the fourth on Isaac Dell (Niagara Falls, Ont.) rush.

The Hawks defence was led by Mitchell Bosch, who had 5.5 tack-les (4 solo, 3 assisted). The team also had a strong showing from Shane Burns (Burlington, Ont.) who had a three knockdowns, while Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) picked up his seventh career interception and the second of the season.

For the Lions, Patrick Russel (Brampton, Ont.) and Chris Burnett (Brampton, Ont.) were second and third in tackles with eight and seven respectively. Michael Boyd contributed 3.5 tackles as well as a 24 yard interception return.

Laurier will next be in action on Saturday, October 2nd when they host the Guelph Gryphons for their Homecoming game. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. and tickets are available online at tickets.laurierathlet-ics.com.

“Laurier downs No. 10 Guelph 36-2”“Laurier scores on the each of the first four drives of the game”by Mike Whitehouse

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-2) defeated the No. 10 nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons (3-2) 36-2 in front of 7396 homecoming fans.

“That was definitely our best effort,” said head coach Gary Jeffries.”We practiced hard this week, and when you do that, the games aren’t as hard.”

The Hawks dominated the Gryphons early, scoring on their first four drives of the game. Just two minutes into the match Evan Pawliuk (Kingston, Ont.) connected with Dillon Heap (Water-loo, Ont.) on a five yard reception to make it 7-0. Nathan Hawkes (Kitchener, Ont.) would score 32 and 35-yard field goals on the next two drives, while Pawliuk would keep it for a 4-yard run

for the Hawks second major.

Laurier continued to roll in the second quarter as Heap would pick up his second TD of the day on an eight yard pass from Pawliuk. Anton Bennett (Toronto, Ont.) scored the Hawks final touchdown on an 18-yard run.

“Coach Pyear and the offence did a wonderful job and the kids went out and executed,” said Jeffries.

Guelph struggled on offence in the first half, picking up only one first down. They got rolling in the second, picking up 10 more firsts’, but the Golden Hawks kept the Gryphons playing on a long field.

Both teams traded safeties in the second half.

OUA leading rusher Nick Fitzgibbon (Puslinch, Ont.) was held to just 53 yards on 18 attempts. The Gryphons also started Luke Nangle at quarterback. The London, Ont. native went 11-29 for 170 yards.

Laurier’s Dillon Heap had a strong showing with nine recep-tions for 110 yards. Starting quarterback Evan Pawliuk went 13-17 for 151 yards and a long of 28. Anton Bennett was the Hawks leading rusher with 75 yards on 16 carries.

On defence linebacker Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) led the way with 6.5 (5 solo, 3 assisted) tackles and a sack. The defen-sive front for Laurier of Andrew Heeley (Carlisle, Ont.), Stephen Cormack (Waterloo, Ont.), George Kourtesiotis (Toronto, Ont.) and Spencer Troop (Georgetown, Ont.) all had strong games, including shutting down the run, Guelph’s strong suit.

For the Gryphons Adam Dunk (Guelph, Ont.) and Grant Mac-Donald (London, Ont) were the top defenders with 8.5 and 7.5 tackles respectively. Defensive back Jordan Duncan (Grimsby, Ont.) chipped in the contest’s lone interception and a 43-yard return.

The Golden Hawks will now travel to Ottawa to take on the Gee Gee’s on Saturday, October 9th at 1 p.m.

“We played for every Hawk that ever played here and we did it for them today, “ said Jeffries.

“Gee Gee’s run over Golden Hawks 44-21”“Sinopoli throws for 300+ yards in Laurier road loss”by Ari Grossman

OTTAWA - The no. six nationally ranked University of Ottawa Gee Gee’s (6-1) downed the no. 10 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-3) 44-21 in front of 1,296 fans at Frank Clair Stadium.

Quarterback Brad Sinopoli led the garnet-and-grey to 524 yards of offence through his 18 completions for 309 yards and three majors. The veteran quarterback closed in on the national record of 3,033 passing yards in a season set last year by Michael Faulds as he brought his total up to 2,552.

The Golden Hawks opened scoring in the game after Daniel Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.) forced a fumble on Sinopoli and start-ing quarterback Evan Pawliuk (Kingston, Ont.) rushed twice before Isaac Dell (Niagara Falls, Ont.) picked up his second touchdown of the year.

That would be the last lead the purple-and-gold would hold in the game. Ottawa scored three majors and five field goals through-out the balance of the contest while the Hawks only added two touchdowns.

“We beat ourselves today,” said manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries. “Our kicking game was as bad as I’ve seen it and we couldn’t generate any offence. Sinopoli is as good there is and we hung in there as long as we could.”

Nathan Hawkes (Kitchener, Ont.) had some trouble getting kicks off because of some short snaps. The result was often hurried or in a couple of cases, an attempted rush as a result of the coverage. Laurier was 0-for-3 on third down conversions in the game.

Pawliuk finished the first half of the game going 6-for-13 for 31 yards before Shane Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J.) stepped into the pivot role and completed 11 of 22 for 152 yards including the only passing major of the contest for the Golden Hawks. Dustin Zender (Waterloo, Ont.) picked up the most yardage as he caught three passes for 63 yards.

Laurier’s defence was led by captain Mitchell Bosch (Langley, BC) who had 7.5 tackles (6 solo, 3 assisted), Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) with seven (6 solo, 2 assisted) and Daniel Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.) with seven (5 solo, 4 assisted) a knock-down and a fumble.

“In the first half I’ve never been apart of a better defensive foot-ball game,” said Patrick McGarry (Waterdown, Ont.) who had two big knockdowns as well as a fumble recovery and three tack-les. “I thought we did a great job but sometimes things go a little sour and you just need to bounce back.”

Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) claimed top spot in the Laurier record books for kick returns in a career. The veteran returner added 86 yards on four carries to bring his overall total to 731.

The Golden Hawks travel back to Waterloo and will host the Queen’s Gaels at University Stadium on October 16th for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Tickets for the contest are available online at http://tick-ets.laurierathletics.com

“Laurier golden over Gaels 44-23”“Shane Kelly goes 20 for 30, with three TD’s”by Mike Whitehouse

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-4) scored six majors and a rouge in for 43 points in the second quarter en-route to 44-23 win over the Queen’s Gaels (2-5)

Laurier quarterback Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J. led the offence throwing for 253 yards and going 20-30 and three TD’s. His favourite target was all-Canadian receiver Dustin Zender of Waterloo, Ont. who scored touchdowns on both his recep-tions. Alex Anthony of Victoria, B.C. picked up the other score through the air and led the Hawks in receiving with 65 yards.

“We’ve got a lot of good athletes here,” said manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries. “When we step up and our kids play to their ability, we can put these things away.”

Laurier’s special teams had a strong outing, giving the purple and gold excellent field position in the second quarter. They created two of the three turnovers that led directly to majors. The Gaels fumbled on a punt return, and after a penalty, left the Hawks at the 1-yard line. Isaac Dell of Niagara Falls, Ont. punched in his first of two, to get the ball rolling.

Queen’s struggled with their special teams after a short punt that left the Hawks on the Gaels 32-yard line. Laurier ate up the short field and Rashad La Touche of Whitby, Ont. scored the

Hawks second major of the game to take the lead. La Touche was also a key on specials, as one of the two players who forced a fumble. The other was linebacker Giancarlo Rapanaro of Niag-ara Falls, Ont.

Laurier didn’t look back from there. The purple and gold scored on each of their next four possessions.

“Our specials were outstanding, our cover teams created turn-overs and we certainly took advantage of that,” continued Jef-fries.

Late in the match the Gaels’ Ryan Granberg of Sherwood Park, Alta. picked up 107 rushing yards to lead all players on the ground. At pivot position, Queen’s struggled with both Justin Chapdelaine of Abbotsford, Ont. and Billy McPhee of Burling-ton, Ont. seeing the field. The former went 9-for-16 with two interceptions, while the latter was 3-for-10 and one pick.

“It’s a great luxury to have a defence like ours,” said Shane Kelly. “Cause you know they are going to contain the other teams offence.”

On defence Laurier was led by Mitchell Bosch of Langley, B.C. with 6.5 tackles (six solo, one assisted). Following Bosch were Carlos Naranjo of Whitby, Ont. with five solo tackles and Gian-carlo Rapanaro of Niagara Falls, Ont. with five (four solo, two assisted).

For the Gaels, Geoff Mohtadi of Calgary, Alta. led the way with 6.5 tackles (five solo, three assisted). He was followed by OUA leading tackler Sam Sabourin of Stittsville, Ont. with 4.5 (four solo, one assisted) and Josh Sultana who had 4.5 (four solo, one assisted). Paul Hutchinson of Hamilton, Ont. picked up the lone interception for the Gaels.

Next up for the Hawks will be a trip to Windsor to take on the Lancers. The final match of the regular season will be played on Saturday, October 24th at 1 p.m.

With one game remaining on the schedule the Hawks are still in the hunt for a home playoff date. The top three spots in the OUA have been locked up by Ottawa, Western and McMaster with the order depending on the final game. For Laurier to host a quarter-final match-up, the Hawks would have to defeat Wind-sor and Guelph would have to lose to Ottawa. Laurier can also still miss the playoffs, if they lose to Windsor.

“Hawks claim 4th in OUA with 56-16 win”“Kelly generals 515 yards of offence in victory”by Ari Grossman

WINDSOR, Ont. - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (4-4) claimed a home playoff game as a result of Saturday afternoon’s 56-16 win over the Windsor Lancers (2-6) in week nine of Ontario University Athletics action.

The result, coupled with Guelph’s loss to Ottawa puts the Hawks in fourth place in the standings where they will host the Gry-phons at University Stadium on October 30th at 1:00 p.m.

“Coming down here hasn’t been easy but today our kids played outstanding in all three phases,” commented manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries on the fact that the team hasn’t won in Windsor since the 49-0 rout in 1999. “I’m really proud of them today.”

Laurier quarterback Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J. finished the game completing 28 of 42 for 342 yards and a touchdown. Special teams picked up two majors in the contest, including a 101-yard kickoff return by Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.) and a 76-yard punt-return by Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.).

“The playoffs started two weeks ago for us,” commented Kelly post-game on the need to win against Queen’s and Windsor to qualify for the playoffs. “We knew we had to come out here and execute and we really got it done today.”

Heap opened scoring in the game with a three-yard pass reception in the end zone. Rashad La Touche (Whitby, Ont.) also picked up two touchdowns rushing while Isaac Dell (Niagara Falls, Ont.) added the only other major for the purple-and-gold.

“That’s one of the positions that we are really deep,” said Kelly on the eight different receivers who contributed to the 342 yards in the air. “We’ve got a lot of quality receivers and no matter who’s out there, we have the confidence that they are going to make plays.”

The ground game of 118 yards was led by La Touche.

Samuel Aird (Ancaster, Ont.) led the team defensively with eight tackles in the contest. The defence only allowed 257 yards in the game, which was due to the consistent pressure on Lancer quar-terback Austin Kennedy. The rookie pivot was sacked four times including by Stephen Cormack (Waterloo, Ont.) who finishes the season with 4.5. Safety Mitch Nicholson (Grand Haven, Mi.) picked up the only interception in the game for Laurier which puts him in top spot for the year.

Kicker Nathan Hawkes (Kitchener, Ont.) added a field goal and became the team’s single-season record holder for kickoff yard-age. He finished with 2,513 yards.

“Laurier advances with 42-10 win over Guelph”“Shane Kelly hits 23 of 33 passes for 282 yards”by Mike Whitehouse

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Guelph Gryphons lost both of their quar-terbacks in the first half of the match to give the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks a 42-10 decision.

Chris Rossetti of Mississauga, Ont. was in the game for about three drives before being tackled on a rush and injuring his knee. Backup quarterback Luke Nangle of London, Ont. was taken down on an interception return at the end of the first half leaving the pivot position vacant. Reciever Jedd Gardner of Niagara Falls, Ont. filled in for the second half.

Even with the injuries to Guelph, Laurier’s offence was working on all cylinders as Shane Kelly went an efficient 22-for-33 with 282 yards and two touchdowns. Kelly connected with Shamawd Chambers of Markham, Ont. for Laurier’s first score of the match just six minutes in.

“We’re hitting our stride right at the right time,” said Shane Kelly. “We had a lot of adversity earlier in the season, but right now everything seems to be coming together.”

The Hawks next major came from an unexpected source. Defen-sive lineman Stephen Cormack of Waterloo, Ont. picked off Nangle and ran it back 57 yards to give the purple and gold a 19-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The two team’s would exchange field goals between the second and third frames to make it 29-4 going into the final 15 minutes.

The Hawks exploded in the fourth quarter with two majors. On the first, Shane Kelly connected with Dillon Heap of Waterloo, Ont. on a 14-yard strike. Then Rashad La Touche of Whitby, Ont. turned a third down conversion into a major.

Guelph’s lone touchdown also came in the fourth quarter with Nick Fitzgibbon of Puslinch, Ont. taking advantage of a third and long play for a 54-yard score. The run helped the OUA’s leading rusher to 142 yards on the ground on 24 carries.

On defence, the Gryphon’s Adam Dunk of Guelph, Ont. had an

impressive outing with 14 tackles of which 13 were solo and two assisted. Sebastian Howard of Niagara Falls, Ont. had the lone pick for the visitors, coming off Shane Kelly’s first pass attempt of the game.

For Laurier, Mr. Everything Giancarlo Rapanaro of Niagara Falls, Ont. had a solid outing, taking over the place kicking duties for Nathan Hawkes of Kitchener, Ont. The fifth year linebacker went 3-for-3 in field goal kicking, hitting two 40-yarders as well as one from 22. He also had two interceptions and five tackles (three solo, four assisted).

Spencer Troop of Georgetown, Ont. led the Hawk defence with 6.5 tackles (five solo, three assisted) as well as an interception of his own.

“Got to put on the work boots and the work hat,” said Comack on playing Ottawa next week. “They are top 3 in the nation for a reason and we are going to be in their house.”

Laurier will now travel to Ottawa to take on the Gee Gee’s at Frank Clair Stadium on Saturday, November 6th at 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Jessica Damery at 613 562-5800 x4337 or by email at [email protected]. They will also be avail-able online at www.capitaltickets.ca

“Hawks season ends in close battle”“Hawks drop semifinal to Gee-Gee’s 32-31”by Ari Grossman

OTTAWA - Quarterback Brad Sinopoli led the no. 4 nationally ranked University of Ottawa Gee-Gees to a 32-31 victory over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in front of 2,370 fans at Frank Clair Stadium.

The win advances the Gee-Gees to the Yates Cup while Laurier’s year ends for the second year in a row in the semifinals.

Sinopoli played a solid game leading the garnet-and-grey to 412 yards of offence including several big plays on route to his 315-passing yard performance.

In what was one of the most exciting contests of the season, the Hawks and Gee-Gees swapped touchdowns several times both with significant drives but the game came down to the final min-utes.

“The kids made plays back and forth and we just ran out of time today,” commented manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries. “I just have the utmost respect for our football team at how resilient they are and the stuff they’ve gone through this year battling to the last seconds of the clock.”

Laurier had two chances to go ahead in the final minute of the game but quarterback Evan Pawliuk of Kingston, Ont. couldn’t get the completions the team needed to put them in field goal range.

Starting quarterback Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J. was knocked out of the game late in the second quarter with a sus-pected concussion after completing 11 of 18 for 134 yards. Paw-liuk, who was already playing in red-zone situations, took the helm to add 137 passing yards in the second half of the contest making several key plays to match each of Ottawa’s scores.

Pawliuk completed to a variety of receivers including Dillon Heap of Waterloo, Ont. and Alex Anthony of Victoria, B.C. who each caught six passes for 76 and 69 yards respectively.

“We just couldn’t come together in the end and get what we needed to do,” commented Pawliuk post-game. “I was a bit ner-vous at first but as soon as I got out there it was what every foot-ball player dreams of, you can’t ask for anything better then a game like this and sometimes in the end it doesn’t work out for you.”

The Hawks were behind at the end of the first 14-7, but then out-scored Ottawa 17-2 in the second with two majors from Kelly to Jeff Emberley (Oakville, Ont.) and Anton Bennett (Toronto, Ont.). Linebacker and place kicker Giancarlo Rapanaro of Niagara Falls, Ont. hit a 36-yard field goal after recovering his own punt before the team conceded a safety to end the half. The third quarter saw a pair of touchdowns swapped and the fourth is when Ottawa scored a touchdown and then Gee-Gee Matthew Falvo hit the 31-yard field goal, which ended up as the game winning points.

Veteran lineman Stephen Cormack of Waterloo, Ont., who had six tackles as well as two sacks in the contest, led Laurier’s defence. Defensive back Scott McCahill of Kingston, Ont. had some key plays including a late interception.

“We said all week we were going to down swinging and we brought as much pressure as we could,” said Cormack, when asked about the game. “That’s all you can really ask for, is the effort we had.”

Laurier has had trouble in the nation’s capital before. The team is 2-2 over the last four contests including the 44-21 loss earlier this season.

The game is the final one for several veterans including Cormack, Emberley, Rapanaro as well as Vince Lunciani of Oakville.

The Mitchell Bowl was first awarded in 2002, replacing the Atlantic Bowl, after the CIS voted in 2001 to change the per-manent site of the Atlantic Bowl in the interest of competitive fairness. During that year, the Mitchell Bowl played opposite to that of the Churchill Bowl. However, with the introduction of the Uteck Bowl in 2003, the Mitchell Bowl replaced and assumed the history of the Churchill Bowl.

Laurier running back Andy Cecchini carried 22 times for 130 yards and tied a Vanier Cup record with three touchdowns. The Golden Hawks, OUA and Churchill Bowl champions, jumped out to an early 11-0 lead in the first quarter as Cec-chini ran one yard for his first touchdown. Laurier took a large lead in the third quarter on a two-yard run by Cecchini and a 19-yard pass from QB Bill Kubas to Cecchini to make the score 24-4. The Mounties, however, staged a spirited comeback as Grant Keaney ran 27 yards for a touchdown and slotback Mark Huys caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Sean Hickey. The Laurier defense tightened up late in the game and preserved the victory. Cecchini won the Ted Morris Trophy as the game’s outstanding player.

HISTORY OF WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY

In 1910 the Canada Synod and Synod of Central Canada of the Lutheran Church entered into an agreement to establish a Lutheran Seminary. Though the location first proposed for the Seminary was Toronto, Waterloo was selected when its citizens offered a tract of land on the boundary of the town. The choice of location was affected, too, by the fact that the majority of Lutherans in Ontario lived in the vicinity of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener). In 1911 the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada opened its doors.

Facilities for pre-theological education were established in 1914 with courses leading to senior matriculation given in Waterloo College School.

In 1924 the Waterloo College of Arts, providing courses in post-secondary education in a four year program, was established. In 1925 the Faculty of Arts, under the name of Waterloo College, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo College soon began to offer Honours degree pro-grams in the arts.

The affiliation with the University of Western Ontario ended in 1960 when the Seminary obtained a revised charter changing the name of the institution to Waterloo Lutheran University.

On November 1, 1973, Waterloo Lutheran University became Wilfrid Laurier University, one of Ontario’s provincially assisted universities after Bill 178 was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor, former Wilfrid Laurier University Chancellor William Ross Macdonald.
