Fortified Wine

Fortified WineThe fortified wines highlighted by this year’s Global Focus are unique and diverse, shaped by long traditions and distinguished by modern developments. Virtually every warm region from Australia to California produces some form of Fortified Wine, although they are generally based on styles originated in Spain and Portugal. The three styles of fortified wines that are most likely to pass your lips at the Festival are Sherry, Port and Madeira. They all have been given a touch of spirit, customarily a neutral brandy.

SherrySpain’s most famous Fortified Wine is experiencing a revitalization of interest and quality. Sherry is predominantly made from Palomino grapes grown near the city of Jerez de la Frontera. Jerez has a long and storied tradition of winemaking, stretching back three millennia. English wine merchants played an important role in developing and exporting wine from the region, and Sherry, their Anglicisation of Jerez, ultimately stuck as the name for the wine.

There are two main types of Sherry: Finos and Olorosos. Finos are delicate and dry, with pungent minerality and apple and almond flavours. They are aged in open vessels under a layer of flor yeast that creates a natural barrier against oxidation and keeps the wine fresh and light. Through the solera system, the flor is kept alive for years by persistently topping up the cask with young wine, and replenishing the yeast nutrients. A Fino becomes the amber, richly flavoured Amontillado when the wine is fortified above 16% alcohol and the flor dies. Brandy is added after fermentation to enhance and preserve the wine. Olorosos are more concentrated with a distinctly darker flavour and a higher percentage of alcohol. These wines mature without flor and are deliberately oxidized to shape their flavour. They can be either dry or sweet and serve as the basis for Cream Sherries. With the exception of the finest Sherries made from concentrated Pedro Ximénez grapes, most sweet Sherries are sweetened after the fermentation process.

PortPort was originally produced as a dry red table wine, but legend has it that in the 17th century, English wine merchants in search of alternatives to embargoed French wine discovered an abbot at a monastery in Lamego who added brandy to wine during the fermentation process instead of after. The addition of the spirit while the sugars were being converted into alcohol halted the fermentation process, resulting in a sweet wine, high in alcohol and perfectly fortified for the long journey back to England and beyond.

The Port industry has continued to thrive. New technology and research have allowed growers to identify the best grapes from the plethora that are authorized for production, and recent plantings have been more orderly. Brandy is added to Port during the fermentation process, halting the conversion of sugar to alcohol. There will be many variations of Port to please every palate in the Tasting Room, including golden and delicious aged tawnies, refined and collectable vintage ports, and late-bottled vintage ports, colheitas and single-quinta vintages.

MadeiraMadeira takes its name from the Portuguese island of the same name. The addition of alcohol helped the wines survive long ocean voyages overseas. Fortunately, it was discovered that the long, hot trips across the equator actually improved the wines by caramelising the sugars. This process of heating Madeira is called maderisation. Two centuries ago, Madeira was considered a luxury the world over, but unfortunately popularity was no protection against the scourge of phylloxera in the 19th century, and the disease almost eradicated the island’s industry. While the Madeira business has continued to be cursed by setbacks, the wines continue to impress with their tangy aromas, zingy acidity, remarkable length and gold to amber colour.

Other FortifiedsOf course, the world of Fortified Wine is much larger than Sherry, Port and Madeira. If a region produces wine, it is also likely to fortify it. Some others to look out for are Banyuls and Vin Doux Naturel from France, which are especially strong and sweet and made from Grenache and Muscat. New world producers also use the traditional methods to produce fortified wines and both Australia and California have long histories of producing high-quality fortified wines.

Looking for great value wines?

Stop right there, you’ve found them. Anything you could want, from sophisticated sparklers and easy-drinking whites to patio pinks and deluxe, complex red wines, to dry and sweet fortified and more – it’s all here in Spain. Spain is a significant and diverse winemaking country with a long history. The variety of wines from this progressive winemaking collective is exploding in popularity around the world, so now is the perfect time for you to start discovering Wines from Spain.

Salud!

A Glance at Wines from SpainFor wine lovers on the prowl for good deals across the board, Spain simply translates into plenty of very good buys and money left over in the bank.

Developing internationally from a country that was once known principally for Sherry and Rioja, over the past three decades Spain has entered the public eye as a producer of a seemingly endless selection of wines of quality and character that over-deliver on value. This can be credited to the leadership, talent and skill of a new breed of winemaker and the introduction of modern, cutting-edge winemaking equipment.

In a world where many consumers are familiar with only a handful of international varietals – Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, of which Spain has many excellent representatives – it is worth noting that the great majority of Spanish wines are made from native Spanish varietals. Most notably these include Spain’s top red wine variety, Tempranillo and all of its clones; Albariño, its highest-quality white wine variety; and many other mainstream quality varietals such as Verdejo and Godello for still whites; Mencía, Garnacha and Monastrell for reds. The main fortified wine grapes Palomino and Pedro Ximénez; and the three Cava grapes Macabeo, Perellada and Xarel-lo bear an important mention as well as they represent a large sector of wines throughout this diverse winemaking country.

Spain holds the world record for most area under vine of any country on Earth at nearly 1.16 million hectares. It does not, however, produce the most wine of any country, which is the result of Spain’s commitment to lower yields in their vineyards, which effectively gives better quality and more concentrated aromas and flavours to their wines. Vineyards are to be found in every corner of this spectacular country, limited only by altitude or desert. What’s really remarkable about this viticultural mosaic is not simply the size of its vineyard area but rather the sheer diversity of it. Spain has vines everywhere; in plains, on mountain sides, in river valleys, on the coast and in from the coast. As such, the variety of styles produced by its different vineyards is utterly extraordinary.

Spanish wine regions are differentiated by their DOs and DOCas (Denominación de Origen and Denominación de Origen Calificada in Spanish). Basically what this means is that regulatory boards govern the production of wines in each of these areas to ensure that we, the consumers, are getting a guaranteed quality wine. Canadian consumers are beginning to discover these wines in ever-increasing numbers and while Spain, as the saying goes, is still on the ground floor in Canada, it is definitely in the elevator going up as trends toward awareness, interest and demand continue to increase dramatically.

A few years ago, Robert Parker, the world’s most influential wine critic, proclaimed, “Spain will be the star.” How right he was. The praise and accolades from press and consumers alike just keep on coming and many of Spain’s treasured regions have captured attention worldwide, winning multiple awards in the process.

Spanish wines are well known for the many great values they offer. When comparing Spanish regions, you may never find the same style twice. That said, you would certainly have a fun and interesting time exploring each one which is, after all, what it’s all about! Don’t you think?

International Festival Tasting

760 wines • 176 wineries • 15 countries

The Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival is widely regarded as the best consumer wine show on the continent, and the International Festival Tasting Room is the heart of it.

The Wine World is Here.

There’s no place like home, and this year the Festival is heading back under the sails at Vancouver Convention Centre’s newly renovated East Building. All 176 participating wineries are organized alphabetically within countries, providing a series of regional journeys. Use the free Festival Program handed out at the door to help you keep track of the wines you like. The Tasting Room offers a unique opportunity to taste rare bottles and discover new treasures as you visit with renowned winery principals from around the globe.

At each table you will find a winery principal, identified by their royal blue lanyard. This person is a senior member of the winery, intimately involved in the wine-production process as a winemaker, proprietor or senior executive. Nowhere else in the world will you find such talented women and men pouring wine and answering questions. Take this opportunity to quiz and learn from the experts about your favourite wine.

The Tasting Room plays out over three consecutive nights, and each night is unique. Thursday night’s capacity is guaranteed to be 25 percent lower than the other two evenings, attracting wine collectors and trade professionals who appreciate more room to interact with the winery principals. Friday is great for groups and the after-work crowd looking to kick off the weekend in style. Saturday night is perfect for couples and friends wanting to enjoy a night on the town. Groups of eight or more can save $10 each on Friday and Saturday nights.

Please remember that this is a wine tasting, not a dinner event. We strongly recommend that you enjoy a meal before setting out, as the room is infinitely easier to navigate on a full stomach. However, you will find plenty of plain bread for cleansing the palate and small food samples will be served throughout the room.

Miguel Torres is one of the most important names in Spanish winemaking. Both the man and the wine are synonymous with quality, innovation and lasting legacy. Chef Jeremie Bastien will prepare an exquisite dinner at the acclaimed Boneta Restaurant, paired with a remarkable selection of Torres wines. The true delight of the evening will be your host, the venerable icon himself, Mr. Miguel A. Torres.

Miguel Torres is, as Decanter Magazine says, “undoubtedly the driving force behind the modernization of Spanish wine.” Join moderator Anthony Gismondi as he discusses the legacy of arguably the most important person in the history of Spanish winemaking. Guests will be guided through a rare and diverse selection of wines from the Torres wineries in Spain, Chile and California.

Event Partners Miguel Torres Spain, Miguel Torres Chile, Marimar Estate (California)

Sherry and Montilla are the wines in the spotlight as participants embark on a guided journey to learn the art of pairing these established fortified wines with artisanal cheeses of Spain. From the delicate to the intense, taste Spain’s iconic fortifieds and judge for yourself how a perfect synergy of wine and food can enhance the natural, inherent umami of these unique wines and fine cheeses to a whole new mouth-watering level. Presented by Cesar Saldaña, Director General of The Regulating Council of Jerez, and Allison Spurrell, owner of Les Amis du Fromage.

Sponsored by Wines from Spain and the Consejo Regulador de Jerez

Take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet the proprietors, CEOs and Winemakers of 10 of Spain’s iconic wineries. Taste their magnificent wines while getting a fascinating glimpse into the driving forces behind the new Spanish wine industry. Prepare to be inspired. Participants: Bodegas Alvear’s Fernando Alvear, Bodegas Hidalgo’s Javier Hidalgo, Iberwine’s Javier Delgado-Aurteneche, Bodegas Piqueras’ Juan Pablo Bonete, Cavas Parés Baltà’s Joan Cusine, Gonzáles Byass’ Felipe González-Gordon, Alvaro Palacios’ Alvaro Palacios, Telmo Rodriguez’ Telmo Rodriguez, Grupo Freixenet’s Pedro Ferrer, and Juan Gil’s Loren Gil. Moderated by Wines from Spain Ambassador Roger Randolph.

F is for the fabulous and flexible flavours of fortified wines. This is an extremely versatile and exclusive global family, including Ports, Sherries, and Madeiras, as well as the captivating sweet wines from the south of France. From the finesse of Manzanilla to robust vintage port, from flamboyant Banyuls to smooth tawny, each Fortified Wine will be put to work with magnificent food matches that show off their culinary adaptability.DJKearney,Chef,WineConsultantandJournalist, leadsthis romp through wine’s F-words, joined by the now-legendary panel of chefs: Julian Bond, Executive Chef, Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts; Tony Lawrence, Philadelphia’s A Chef For You; Blair Rasmussen, Executive Chef, Vancouver Convention Centre; and Dino Renaerts, Executive Chef and Owner, Fraîche. You may find yourself using the F-word in a whole new way!

The Spaniards baptized it Garnacha, but most countries just call it Grenache. This lesser-known grape variety shows up in many more wines than you would think. From cheerful rosés, full-bodied reds such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Priorato and Rioja, to lusciously sweet elixirs, Grenache has numerous guises. Michelle Bouffard and Michaela Morris from house wine will introduce you to some of its finest expressions hailing from Spain, France, California and Australia. Discover just how versatile Grenache can be.

Calling all enthusiastic vinophiles! Based on the speed dating model, the event will deliver a fresh twist on the standard wine seminar. Chaperoned by master wine matchmaker Anthony Gismondi, you’re destined to find your perfect wine match! Meet Your Match will be presented in a format that allows small groups direct and personal interaction with the wine’s winery producer. The group will have about 6 minutes with each producer to taste their wine, hear their story and ask any questions they like.

Vancouver’s Original Regional Theatre Company

The Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company is British Columbia’s premier theatre company, formed in 1962 in response to the Canada Council’s funding initiative for regional theatre companies. It became the principal tenant of the 655-seat Vancouver Playhouse, a civic building in the downtown core. Under new residency terms with the City, the Playhouse will have first scheduling priority at the theatre, allowing the company to significantly increase programming opportunities for itself and other arts organizations.

A reputation for the highest standards has enabled the Playhouse to present some of the best theatre artists from across Canada, creating consistently high-calibre theatre experiences for 48 seasons. It has produced premieres of many original Canadian plays (The Ecstasy of Rita Joe, The Overcoat), disseminated partnered work across Canada (Where the Blood Mixes, The Drowsy Chaperone), played a historic role in providing training and graduate opportunities for Western Canadian theatre artists to develop their craft, and helped develop the regional community’s interest in classics and contemporary work by authors such as Tennessee Williams and George Ryga.

The Playhouse presents a five-play Mainstage season that runs October through May, additional smaller-scale productions and play readings at alternate venues, and special presentations of artistically compelling plays and Theatre-for-Young-Audience works.

The Education and Outreach Department makes available study guides and tours of the production facilities to high schools and community groups during the season, and tailors specific outreach programmes to select plays, bringing theatre education directly to the classroom and community. The Young Playwrights Unit gives budding high school writers their first taste of a professional production, while helping develop the future of Canadian theatre.

Other outreach programmes include a Salon Series featuring guest speakers, Talkbacks with the cast, costume and prop rentals, discounted ticket prices and special matinee performances for senior citizens, students and disadvantaged groups. Each production includes a Pay-What-You-Can Matinee to ensure that all members of the community have the opportunity to attend the Playhouse, regardless of their financial situation.

In addition to its own production work, the Playhouse shares its rehearsal halls, production workshops, and prop and costume inventory with the community as a whole, providing badly needed resources to other arts organizations and community groups that otherwise wouldn’t have access to a venue, shop space or heavily subsidized prop and costume rentals.

Over the past 33 years, the Vancouver International Wine Festival has raised more than $7 million for the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company, making it by far the largest single fundraiser for the organization. Every ticket you purchase to the Playhouse Wine Festival helps ensure that the Playhouse continues to provide world-class theatre to British Columbia audiences.
