Fernie Ski & Board Film Festival This WeekendThe Fernie Ski & Board Film Fest is a fundraiser for the Canadian Ski Patrol System. It brings on the coolest films and the biggest launch to the ski and snowboard season ever to hit the streets of Fernie. All this years best ski and board films in one big showing and on opening weekend! To celebrate the 50th anniversary of lift serviced skiing in Fernie; the CSPS is expanding its Film Festival to two nights of great entertainment at Fernie’s Vogue Theatre.

With four titles to choose from including Attack of La Nina, pre-sented by the Gear Hub at 7pm and Art of Flight, presented by Edge of the World at 9pm on Friday December 9th as well as two titles on Saturday December 10th includ-ing All I Can, presented by the Guides Hut at 7pm and Day and Age, presented by Commit at 9pm.

Presented by Gear Hub “Attack of La Niña” is a recap of one of the longest and deepest North Amer-ican winters on record, served up courtesy of the worldwide weather phenomenon known as la niña. “Last winter continued to amaze us as the season went on – weather patterns relentlessly pounded the western US and Canada,” said

executive producer Murray Wais. “Deep snow and epic conditions made it nearly impossible to stray too far from home, creating op-portunities to go deeper into zones that we’ve explored in the past. We were able to check out some spots that we’d never even thought of as possibilities before, and the payoff was greater than we ever could have expected!

Brace yourself for a new breed of action sports film: “The Art of FLIGHT” presented by Edge of the World, combines meaningful storytelling and character develop-ment with sport progressing action. Snowboarder Travis Rice, along with a cast of the best riders in the world, completes a two-year quest to redefine what’s possible on a snowboard. Red Bull Media House, in association with Brain Farm

Travis Rice handpicks his ac-complices from a list of the best snowboarders of our time including two-time Rider of the Year John Jackson, Mark Landvik, Olympic medallist Scotty Lago, Nicolas Muller, DCP, Jake Blauvelt, Pat Moore, Jeremy Jones and more. Join in their sometimes success-ful, often trying quest to open up new mountain zones and ap-

proach unexplored mountains from completely unique angles. Chilean Patagonia’s Darwin Range, Alaska’s Tordrillo Range, Wyoming’s Snake River Range, Aspen, Colorado, the Andes, as well as British Columbia’s Kootenay Mountains, Revelstoke and Goat Range are the stage for this epic production.

2 years, 5 countries and over 15 skiers in the making of All.I.Can presented by the Guides Hut. The time has come for a ski film that stands for something. Join Sherpas Cinema as they unite spectacu-lar cinematography with creative cinematic language to fuse passion for skiing with motivation for green initiatives and forward thinking. In bringing the planet to life and drawing parallels between daily existence, they find a common ground between the global situa-tion and the real individual. The incredible natural cinematog-raphy, integrated music and struc-tural components of the film have melded together in a chillingly awe-inspiring presentation of various layers, messages and stories. Taking ski-filmmaking to an entirely new level, the Sherpas are going beyond tricks and big lines and injecting a sense of morality and social respon-sibility. Featuring ground-breaking

skiing from Chile to Greenland, naturally mind-blowing scenery, and an environmental engagement that creates an accessible identifica-tion point for the viewer, All.I.Can leaves you with an inspiring new perspective and appreciation for what we have and what we stand to lose.

Presented by Commit, Day and Age is created by Sandbox who is Kevin Sansalone and Clayton Larsen, along with a team of very talented, snowboarders, filmers and design-ers. Taking a different approach to snowboard film making, Day And Age, has unique footage, good riding and fun are the focus once again for this years Sandbox crew.

Great prizes will be won including Ski More Cards, a day of snowcat skiing at Island Lake Lodge, 2 for 1 lift tickets to Castle, food vouch-ers from Overwaitea and lots more from the Gear Hub, Guides Hut, Edge of the World and Commit! Tickets are $12 per show and are available at the presenting retail sponsors and the Vogue Theatre.

The CSPS has been staging a Fernie Film Fest for several years as the sole means of raising funds from the public to assist in the delivery of volunteer services. Last winter 33 CSPS members in Fernie and Elk-ford provided 369 days of volunteer patrol services to the local ski hills. Your help supporting this event will be appreciated.

Whether you know them as ‘volly patrol’ or ‘yellow jackets’, the volunteer members of the Canadian Ski Patrol System (CSPS) put in many hours of slopetime at Fernie Alpine Resort and Elkford’s Wapiti Ski Hill to make sure skiers and boarders have a fun – and safe – time on the mountain. The Canadian Ski Patrol System has more than 4,700 volunteer patrollers acrossCanada, including 33 members in Fernie and Elkford who last year gave up a total of 369 days of their time to be on the hill.Like their full-time pro patrol colleagues, CSPS volunteers patrol the ski hill during peak times and assist with first aid, questions from skiers, ski area boundary and safety pole lines, and help with crowd control during special events.Although the CSPS volunteers don’t get paid, they have extensive pre-season training before they can step onto the lift in their eye-catching blue and yellow jackets, says Tom Little, who has been a CSPS member for 17 years, is treasurer of the Elk Valley organization and sits on the national board of directors.“New members have to take a 60 hour induction court which includes

CPD level C (for child, infant and adult), first aid including the use of automatic external defibrillators.“There is also on-snow training including accident scene management, toboggan handling and we also provide them with the opportunity to take an avalanche skills training course if they don’t already have it.“Returning patrollers also have to recertify with all of these skills every year.”CSPS volunteers in the Elk Valley include BC ambulance paramedics and other medical professionals who want to use their skills while skiing. At Elkford’s Wapiti Ski Hill, the CSPS volunteers are the only ski patrol service.Fernie Alpine Resort enters its 50th year in operation in 2012, and the CSPS has had patrollers at the ski hill for more than 35 years.Every day volunteered at Fernie Alpine Resort earns CSPS members credits towards a season pass for the following winter.Little said that pro patrollers were brought in as the Fernie ski hill grew and required more extensive patrol and avalanche control work which involved too great a time commitment to be provided by volunteers. However, he added that volunteers

and pro patrollers operate alongside each other during the season.“There is no ‘us’ and ‘them’ – we are all the same and all report to whoever is in charge of snow safety and risk management, the patrol director and mountain operations manager.“It is all about getting the job done every day and ensuring everyone has a good time on the mountain.”Kit for volunteer ski patrollers costs $1500 per person and, as volunteers only pay $175 annual registration fee to be part of the organization, the rest of the funding has to come from fundraising such as this weekend’s film festival.“We are lucky to have had support from Scotiabank, Columbia Basin Trust, City of Fernie, Fernie Alpine Resort, Teck, STARS and BC Province’s direct access community funding in the past,” says Little.“This means our main fundraising event is the film festival, which this year we have moved to the Vogue Theatre. We hope it will be well-supported and enjoyable for everyone.”
