What Sister Catherine McAuley suggested was a life pursuit, a

purposeful action that moves us to betterment, betterment of

world and self. And in concert with such action is the recognition

that change is not only possible, but also expected. We move

forward, driven by curiosity and the possibility of discovery.

Scholarship at Mercyhurst College is a measured melding of

exploration, application and dissemination, fueled by curiosity

and discovery. We also ask our peers and colleagues to critique

our works. At Mercyhurst College, students and faculty engage

in systematic and creative works designed to move academic

disciplines forward and to take academic disciplines deeper. At

Mercyhurst College, we embrace scholarship because it allows us

to confront the unknown simply for the sake of the confrontation.

As a community of scholars, we celebrate the accomplishments

of our colleagues. We celebrate the diversity of disciplines

recognized on the national and international stage. We

2011-2012 New Research Fellows Dr. Peter Benekos Professor of Criminal Justice

Dr. Peter Benekos is Professor of Criminal Justice and Sociology at Mercyhurst College and the Executive Director of the Mercyhurst Civic Institute. He has conducted research and published in the areas of juvenile justice, corrections, and public policy, and teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses. He is the co-author (with Alida V. Merlo) of Crime Control, Politics & Policy, 2nd edition (LexisNexis/Anderson) and co-editor (with Alida V. Merlo) of Controversies in Juvenile Justice and Delinquency, 2nd edition (LexisNexis/Anderson) and Corrections: Directions & Dilemmas (Anderson). He is co-author of “Is Punitive Juvenile Justice Policy Declining in the United States? A Critique of Emergent Initiatives” published in Youth Justice: International Journal and “Youth, Race, and Serious Crime: Examining Trends and Critiquing Policy” published in the International Journal of Police Science and Management. With Kristen Burillo (Senior Research Analyst) and Sarah Olson (Student Research Assistant) of the Civic institute he co-authored the report Erie County Youth in Prison: Juveniles in the Adult System. In 2010, Professor Benekos received the Teaching Excellence Award, presented by Mercyhurst College, and in 2011, he received an Outstanding Mentor Award, presented by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. In 2003, he was co-recipient of the Donal MacNamara Award for Outstanding Journal Publication, presented by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences for the article titled “A Preliminary Study of Student Attitudes on Juvenile Justice Policy.” He is a member of the Board of Directors and chair of the Program and Planning Committee at Harborcreek Youth Services. Professor Benekos is past president of the Northeastern Association of Criminal Justice Sciences and was a trustee of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

Dr. Frank Hagan Professor of Sociology

Dr. Frank E. Hagan, earned degrees from Gannon, Maryland and Case Western Reserve. He is the director of the James V. Kinnane Graduate Program in Administration of Justice and is the author of nine books. These are: Deviance and the Family (with Marvin B. Sussman), Introduction to Criminology (7th edition), Crime Types and Criminals, Research Methods in Criminal Justice and Criminology (8th edition), Essentials of Research Methods in Criminal Justice (3rd edition), Political Crime, White Collar Deviance (with David Simon), The Language of Research (with Pamela Tontodonato) and Criminal Justice Research. He has also written more than 50 articles in professional journals and presented numerous papers at professional conferences. In 2001 he was honored with the Academy Fellow Award of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, that organization’s highest award for scholarship.

Dr. Albert Glinsky Professor of Music

Dr. Albert Glinsky has received critical praise for his works, which have been performed widely in such settings as the Aspen Music Festival, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, and throughout Europe and the Far East. His compositions have been presented by dance companies across the U.S. and in Canada, including a three-season international tour of his ballet Flights with the Joffrey II Company. Glinsky has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Smithsonian Institution, the Jerome Foundation, the Astral Foundation, the Alienor International Competition and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, among others. His works have been commissioned and performed by such ensembles as the Cavani Quartet, Relâche, Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia, the Biava Quartet, the Erie Philharmonic, and with conductors Walter Hendl, Eiji Oue and Ignat Solzhenitsyn. His music includes vocal, chamber, solo, electronic and symphonic works, and is published by E.C. Schirmer, Hinshaw Press and C.F. Peters, and recorded on the BMG Catalyst, RCA Red Seal, Centaur, Koch International Classics, and Leonore labels. Glinsky’s teachers have included Joan Tower and David Diamond, and he holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Juilliard School, and a Ph.D. from New York University. He has served on the faculty of Montclair State University, was BMI Composer-in-Residence at Vanderbilt University, has taught at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, and was a Ucross Foundation Resident Artist in Wyoming. Glinsky has appeared on the Discovery Channel, the A&E Network, various National Public Radio programs, Canada’s CBC network and England’s BBC Radio, and was featured last June on the PBS show “History Detectives.” His book, Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage, published by the University of Illinois Press, won the 2001 ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award. Currently he is writing the authorized biography of synthesizer pioneer Robert Moog.
