2011 SEASON PREVIEW

The 2011 Men’s Tennis team is looking to defend its 2010 Orange Empire Conference

Championship and will be looking for a third consecutive OEC title. The Orange Empire Conference is arguably one of the toughest conferences in Men’s Tennis in the CCCAA. While our goal is to defend our conference championship, I believe this team has what it takes to contend for a State title. The 2011 team returns three play-ers from last year’s Championship team and adds nine new faces. Key returners are Gabriel Dias and Danilo Kelen who helped secure last year’s conference title. Gabriel had an outstanding 2010 season pulling off a couple of upsets during con-ference and teaming up with Derek Por-ter in doubles to help the Chargers win a few close matches last season. Dias, an all OEC singles and doubles player, also qualified for the Southern California Re-gional Tournament by upsetting top play-ers from conference rivals Riverside, Or-ange Coast, and Saddleback. Danilo had solid performances in the #6 position last season and helped the Chargers close out many matches and looks to have a stand out year. Victor Peinado is our final re-turner and looks to contend for a starting position.

The Chargers welcome in a talented

group of freshman as well as sophomore transfers from other four-year colleges. Key transfers are Oliver Andrzejczuk who played for California Baptist Uni-versity of the NAIA. Andrzejczuk aided CBU’s efforts at an NAIA title run in 2009 helping the Lancers finish in the Top 5 of the country. Also transferring into Cypress is Torsten Keil-Long from Cla-remont. Torsten was a standout junior player in the Southern California Tennis Association/United States Tennis Asso-ciation who has some international com-petition experience. Keil-Long comes to Cypress from University of California Da-vis, an NCAA Division 1 school.

Among the talented Freshman en-tering Cypress College are Mark Mahan from Fullerton, Carl ‘Joakim’ Nordmar from Sweden, and Dhanuk Withana from Irvine. The rest of the freshman class for Cypress gives our team a lot of depth including Sean De Young and Eric Ballesteros from Anaheim, Philip Jor-genson from Maryland/Niger (Africa), and William ‘BK’ Fernandez from Hun-tington Beach.

The team has a few tough matches scheduled early to prepare for Orange Empire Conference play. One of the key matches is on February 8th when College of the Desert (13-time State Champion) comes to Cypress to take on the Char-

gers. We will be looking to see how we fare against them and then will use the remainder of our schedule to prepare for OEC play and the play-offs. Other key matches for us come at the end of Febru-ary when we travel to Santa Barbara on Friday to take on the Vaqueros which we narrowly beat last season and then on Saturday when we take on defending State Champion Ventura in the am match and then Grossmont in the pm match. In mid-March Cypress has been invited to take part in the North-South Tournament which pits Northern California Schools against Southern California Schools. The Northern California schools have won the last two years and Cypress looks to help Southern California reclaim the Tourna-ment title this season. This challenging non-conference schedule should prepare us for the challenge of defending our OEC crown and making a run at a State title. Top contenders in our conference are ri-vals Riverside and Orange Coast and this year Saddleback will look to challenge Cy-press for the OEC crown.

The experience and depth of our team should help us achieve our goals and elevating not only the Tennis program at Cypress but our student-athletes to the next level. Thank you to all of those who support our program and we look to see you on the tennis courts.

“While our goal is to defend our conference championship, I believe this team has what it takes to contend for a State title.”
