WHAT IS A CHANTICLEER?

The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina University when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system.

A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

PAUL

HOGANHEAD COACH | FIRST SEASONUNIVERSITY OF CHARLESTON, 1995

Coastal Carolina University Director of Athletics Hunter Yurachek an-nounced Paul Hogan, former associate head women’s coach at

the University of Colorado, as the fourth head women’s soccer coach in Chanticleer his-tory Thursday, Jan. 5, 2010.

“We are extremely excited to have Paul join our athletics family at Coastal Carolina,” Yu-rachek said. “Paul’s experience with building programs into contenders on the national level, coupled with his recruiting prowess, made him stand out among a great group of candidates. He demonstrated to us a clear plan on how to build a complete champion-ship program - one that has been successfully tested at other University’s - and we are excited to help him execute that plan. He will be a great leader for the young women on our soccer team and a great part of the Coastal Carolina community.”

Hogan spent the past 10 seasons, including the last ve as associate head coach, under Colorado head coach Bill Hempen, helping the Bu aloes compile a 104-64-24 (.604) record and a national ranking at the end of the 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008 seasons.

“I am thrilled for the opportunity to join the Coastal Carolina family and community and lead the women’s soccer program,” said Hogan. “The rich athletic traditions and aca-demic excellence coupled with a great campus location make Coastal Carolina a school full of exponential potential. The women’s soccer program has been successful since its inception, and I look forward to challenges of meeting the standards set by the previous coaches and taking Coastal Carolina women’s soccer to the next level.”

Hogan was hired at Colorado in 2001. Two years later, Hogan helped direct the Bu aloes to a 2003 Big XII regular season title, the rst in school history, and Big XII Tournament Finals in 2005, 2006 and 2008. In his 10 years, the Bu aloes competed in six NCAA Tour-naments, including a run to the Sweet 16 during the 2006 season.

During Colorado’s 14-6-4 season of 2006, the Bu s were ranked 15th nationally in total attendance and second in the Big XII.

In addition to his duties as associate head coach on the Boulder campus, Hogan also spent nine seasons coaching the Colorado Olympic Development Program (ODP) teams.

Prior to his arrival in Boulder, Hogan spent three seasons at Allegheny College where he guided the Gators to a 35-16-7 (.686) overall record and 17-6-2 (.739) North Coast Athletic Conference mark, while producing 16 All-NCAC players.

His three Gator teams nished no lower than third in the nal NCAC standings and his

1999 squad won a school-record six conference matches, a feat duplicated by the 2000 team, earning Hogan conference Coach of the Year accolades with his student-athletes earning NCAC Newcomer and O ensive Player of the Year postseason honors.Hogan made the leap to head coach in April 1998 from Duke where he was an assistant for the 1996 and `97 seasons. He assisted the Blue Devils to a two-year record of 28-11. In 1997, Duke nished 15-5-0, including a 4-2-0 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference ac-tion, and won the ACC tournament championship. Over his two seasons, Hogan helped coach three All-Americans and 11 All-ACC selections.

Previously, Hogan spent one season contributing at his alma mater, the University of Charleston (W.Va.), as a volunteer assistant. He helped Charleston to a 17-3 record and an NCAA Division II playo berth in 1995.

Hogan graduated from Charleston in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in sports science. There, he was a three-time All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selec-tion at goalkeeper. He earned All-South Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association in both 1993 and 1994, and led the Golden Eagles to WVIAC championships in 1992 and 1994.

Born August 22, 1972, the Monroe, N.Y., native is a 1990 graduate of Washingtonville High School. He is the oldest of two and his younger sister Nancy also played collegiate soccer at Elon. In what little free time he has, Hogan likes to golf.

Rich Stoneman is in his second season as the assistant women’s soccer coach at Coastal Carolinla University, working with all aspects of the program as

well as the goalkeepers.

In Stoneman’s rst season at Coastal, he helped guide the Chants to a 10-8-2 overall record and a share of the regular season conference crown. Under the instruction of Stoneman, the Coastal keepers combined for six clean sheets and only six goals allowed during conference play. Senior goalkeeper Amy Haggard nished the season with a 6-1-2 record, while posting a .71 goals against average as she became the Chants all-time leading goalkeeper in numerous statistical categories.

Stoneman spent three seasons at East Carolina University, where he was the assistant coach in charge of goalkeepers. During his time with the Pirates, the squad went 32-16-12 and 14-9-8 in Conference-USA, including the 2008 regular season title and a run to the league tournament nals. During his tenure, he coached goalkeeper, Amber Campbell, who was the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year, Second Team All-Southeast Region and First Team All-Conference selection in 2008. He also worked with defender Madison Keller, who spent part of the 2009 season with the Washington Freedom of the Women’s Professional Soccer League. In his time at ECU, the combined goals-against average was less than a goal a game in the 60 contests.

Prior to his time at ECU, Stoneman spent three years at Louisiana Tech as an assistant coach. In addition, he was responsible for recruiting Emily Cleaveland, the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Freshman-of-the-Year in 2005, and coordinating all aspects of Louisiana Tech’s recruit-ing e orts.

Prior to Louisiana Tech, Stoneman served as assistant coach at Eastern New Mexico Uni-versity for both the men’s and women’s teams. There, he actively oversaw all aspects of recruiting Eastern New Mexico’s initial team.

Before his stint at Eastern New Mexico, Stoneman spent a year coaching the Dallas Tex-ans Club Team and the Olympic Development Teams. In 2001-02, he joined the Baylor women’s soccer program and further broadened his experience under Head Coach Nick Cowell. The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team has called the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field home since the 2002 season. The Chanticleers opened the eld with a 2-1 win over Appalachian State Sept. 1, 2002, and have won nearly 63 percent of their games on the home turf. Coastal Carolina and the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field hosted the 2006 Big South Women’s Soccer Championships and the men’s squad hosted Davidson in a rst-round NCAA Tournament game in 2003.

The Coastal Carolina Soccer Field features a full-size pitch with natural grass and bleacher seating on the East size of the complex. A press box and new scoreboard were installed in 2004 and improvements to the aesthetics of the eld have been ongoing.

The Coastal Carolina Soccer Field surely holds a distinctive home eld advantage for the Chants as the program is 51-24-8 all-time within its friendly con nes.

The Chants opens the 2011 home schedule Saturday, Aug. 27 against Southern Conference member Georgia Southern.

RETIRED NUMBER

In a ceremony prior to the 2011 women’s soccer alumni game (April 9, 2011), the alumni and current team came together to pay the ultimate homage to a former player, dear friend and role model by o cially retiring April Erin Stirton’s number 26 from the women’s soccer program. Stirton’s number was retired almost a year to the day after the CCU women’s soccer family su ered the devastating and tragic loss of Stirton.

Stirton, from Waxhaw, N.C., proudly wore the number 26 for the Chanticleers. She entered Coastal Carolina as a junior transfer from Wingate College in the fall of 2002, playing two seasons as a Chanticleer under former head coach Karrie Miller. During that time, Stirton displayed her talent, skill and competitive drive to earn a starting position on the CCU eld and simultaneously became an immediate member of the women’s soccer family with her southern charm, compassion and unique personality. During her soccer career at Coastal Stirton started in 38 of the 39 games in which she appeared. Over the 2002-03 seasons, Stirton’s contributions on the defensive end helped lead the Chants to a Big South Championship in 2003.

While at Coastal, she was an actively involved student-athlete, was a two-year starter on the women’s soccer team, was a member of the Coastal Carolina University National Competition Cheerleading Squad, an intramural basketball star and a dedicated student of the Wall College of Business.

GEORGE F. “BUDDY” SASSER CUPCoastal Carolina University won the prestigious George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup

for a record-setting ninth time in 2006-07. The Sasser Cup, named for the former Coastal Carolina Athletic Director and Big South Commissioner, honors the top overall athletic department in the Big South Conference. The award is based on a point system, with points being awarded based upon each school’s nish in each of the 18 league-sponsored sports. The Chanticleers’ nine Sasser Cup awards are the most earned by one school in Big South history. Coastal won the 2006-07 award by capturing Big South titles in football, women’s indoor track, men’s golf, women’s tennis (tournament) and baseball (regular-season and tournament). In addition to the Big South honors, Coastal Carolina was represented in six di erent NCAA Championships.

2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run), Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the rst time in Conference history. Last season, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its rst automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the rst in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team – one of ve former Big South athletes to compete in the Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won four PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007 and tied for runner-up at the 2011 Open Championship. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s rst 25 years. The Conference’s on- eld accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its 27 years of existence. Furthermore, the Big South has a record number of NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last two years.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the eld of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s rst Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His e orts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an o cial conference. The Big South’s rst year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full- edged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its rst automatic bid – receiving an automatic quali er to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its rst-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the nest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 15 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the rst time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its rst long-range strategic plan, re-a rming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the e orts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & eld in 1997. The Conference’s 19th championship sport -- women’s lacrosse, will begin play in 2012-13 with seven members. At the same time, Kallander has solidi ed Conference membership, as an all-time high 11 member institutions comprise the 28-year League in 2011-12. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian College, plus the return of charter member Campbell University this year. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its rst live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video o erings to more than 700 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, more than 240 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & eld, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship six times in addition to the rst men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the rst women’s golf program advance to the national nals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team ve consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playo berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, has had four NFL Draft picks, and had an institution nish fth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team nish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playo s (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four out of the last seven years – including a national seed for the rst time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playo berth in 2006 came in just the fth-year of the Big South’s football existence.
