St. Michael and All Angels Church news As most of you will be aware, Annie Nason our previous Churchwarden is taking time out in Spain. We discovered it is not legal to keep a Church open without a Churchwarden - so we (Dona McCullagh and Sheila Stephenson) have stepped into her role and are busy learning the ropes! Despite all her years married to a Vicar, Sheila realises she is only now learning how complex it is to keep a Church running and maintained, and all the intricacies of the Sunday Services! One of the first things we realised is that we need more organists – Annie

used to play so we have to fill her gap! Two new people have come forward to lend a hand but no-one wishes to commit themselves to every service, which is more than understandable. Thus if anyone feels willing to lend a hand we will be forming a rota so that nothing is too much for any one person. The Church organ is a beautiful Chamber Organ, and has no pedals so it only needs people able to play the piano. We will help in every way possible and if you think you can play occasionally please ring Sheila on 01954 210638 or email on [email protected]. One amazing thing has happened however. We have been given a most generous donation by a kind local benefactor to cover the cost of installing water into the Church from

Page 4: 2011 Christmas

the mains. This is on condition we do it at speed! We have to get the groundworks done in the Churchyard first, together with a suitable sink etc installed into the Church Tower, before Cambridge Water will bring the mains supply across the road and connect the Church groundworks up with a meter. The paperwork has been done and the legalities will start happening at the end of November. Our aim is to have all the work completed by the end of March – weather permitting. We will then have to celebrate! Please look out for notices of what we are doing! Another enjoyable thing that happened was our Autumn Service and lunch in the Village Hall this October. We had a very exciting all age service where everyone split into groups working on the happy and sad things of autumn. One group got together and made a giant spider's web showing how everything interweaves together! The service was followed by a delicious shared lunch for which we owe thanks to everyone who came – and to the Charity coffee morning team under Jo Lydon and Lara McDonald who kindly helped sort us all out! Again this was all new to a lot of us! Lastly, Christmas is approaching! You will see in this magazine details of all the services and activities taking place. Please do come and enjoy them. Everything will be in St. Michael's this year and we will look forward to seeing you! It seems a bit early as we write this – but to everyone, a very Happy Christmas! Sheila Stephenson and Dona McCullagh (Churchwardens)

Some thoughts from the Bible, on ending one year and beginning another We finish 2011 and look to the start of 2012 with more anxiety on the world stage, and less hope and excitement, than has been the case for a very long time. Having started the year in a depressed economic climate, we leave it no less immersed in crisis. The Bible has been around for a very long time, which can make it easy to assume it’s out of date. But there’s another way of looking at it. The very age of the Bible means that its words have spoken to people through crises and disasters of every kind through generations. Much of it was written

Page 5: 2011 Christmas

during warfare, invasion, famine, or in prison. The words of the Scriptures are not just religious platitudes. They were written by, and have been read and re-read by, people who know very well how tough life can be much of the time. So…..as we wave goodbye to 2011, and grit our teeth to face 2012, some words to read, to ponder and maybe to commit to memory: I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for hard, to give you a future with hope. (Jeremiah 29:11) For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways higher than my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:8-9) Jesus spoke to them, saying: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12) I will never leave you or forsake you. (Joshua 1:5, repeated in Hebrews 13:5) Certain hope in uncertain times! Mike Booker Rector

1st Caldecote Scout Group. September 2010 saw the formation of the 1st Caldecote Cub Pack, with Mark Robson leading the pack as Akela. The Group started with 12 members and rapidly grew to 24 by the summer term. The Scouting movement required a committee to be set up for the group to run, great thanks to those who have volunteered under the Chairmanship of David Harrison to make up the committee: Lee Hewitt (treasurer), Jay Clarke (CRB records), Emma Morgan (secretary) and Jo Beecroft (subs). The pack would not be able to continue without their involvement and support. During the first year Mark and I learnt a great deal as we put programmes together so that the cubs could work toward badges. Faye Brickle helped us out with the Orienteering Badge, Vince Lee and colleagues of the Cambridgeshire Wildlife Trust took us around Hardwick Wood as part of the Nature Badge and as part of the general education program, Lois Robson organised for Mr Bradshaw to give us a demonstration of how to skin and prepare a rabbit for the pot. Lois also prepared a great stew for us all to try afterwards. We did a couple of hikes, a treasure hunt with hot dogs at the Jacklins’ house, we had some bonfires and a den building evening thanks to local land owner Mr Tom

Page 9: 2011 Christmas

Taylor. Along with some games, a beetle drive, taking part in a cub challenge event and the unforgettable Mark-led sing songs, the year went very quickly. Two of the regular parent helpers, Rob Monk and Andy Gower, saw the need to start a Scout troop as our eldest members became too old to be cubs. They started Scouts in September 2011 with 11 members, they have a great programme organised with enthusiastic support from Ian Jackson and other parents. The first evening had the Scouts setting out what they thought Scouts was about and what they wanted to do. The guys have their work cut out as one of the suggestions was ‘Camping in the Australian Outback’, which fitted with the ‘Adventure’ theme they all came up with. To help them with the adventures they are going to have, the first few weeks has concentrated on map reading, with Mark Lincoln taking an evening to help out. The Cub pack continues to work on its badges, which parents love sewing onto the cubs’ uniforms. A parents roster has been activated to ensure that the pack can operate as we, rightly, have to maintain appropriate child-to-adult ratios. We thank the parents for their great support . So far this year, Vicky Miles has helped us with the cycling badge and the Dunlops’ very kindly put on hot dogs after our hike from Caldecote to Kingston, which took slightly longer than expected. The Cub pack has great support and has 18 young members wanting to join. This could be reduced with

additional regular participation from adult helpers/leaders. If you feel you can spare a couple of hours on a Friday night and/or dedicate a few hours a month helping with the program, or if you want to set up a second cub group, Mark would like to hear from you. If you feel Scouts is more your thing then Rob or Andy would be very pleased to hear from you. As a ‘Scout family’ we miss a Beaver Colony, if you think you might be the right person to set up or help run Beavers then please contact David Harrison. From The County and District Councillors

As we approach Christmas, it strikes me how the year has gone by so quickly. I recall that this time last year, the MadingleyX team was busy canvassing for votes for the Race to Infinity superfast broadband competition. I’m glad to report that progress is good, as BT continues the upgrade work. Some of you might have seen the BTOpenreach vans in the area, with the engineers tinkering with the green cabinets. February 2012 is the date that we expect the superfast broadband service to be officially available. Check www.RaceToInfinity.org.uk for further updates. The weather is getting colder and energy prices keep rising, making it increasingly difficult for some to keep warm. There are government grants of 50% to 100% available to homeowners and tenants to install cavity wall and loft insulation. You can find out more and apply on www.Government-Grants.co.uk. Wrap your house warm this winter with help from the government. Please pass the message on to friends and neighbours, and if you know anyone struggling with their heating bills, please let me know. Check my blog also for other heat saving discussions. Your County Councillor Fiona Whelan and I are here to help you. Please contact us if we can be of help in any

way. We both wish all the residents of Caldecote a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Tumi Hawkins District Councillor

Friends of Caldecote Church Reviving our Heritage It’s been another great year raising funds for our ancient church building, and having fun while we do! Personal donations, sales of cards and cookbooks, ticket sales from a memorable concert, proceeds from plant stalls, the 2011 Caldecote Open Gardens and our Jam Jar project have in total raised well over £4000 since January.

We’d like to take this opportunity to express our particular thanks to supporters who have set up standing orders – regular donations are a significant part of our fundraising total and we are incredibly grateful for this quiet but important financial support.

Every penny counts – Jam Jar update

We are so grateful to everyone who has been filling jam jars with coppers to help look after the church. Our team has been working hard to collect the jars and count the pennies – if your jar’s full and waiting collection, we’ll be around to pick it up as soon as we can! We haven’t forgotten you. The sum raised so far has just exceeded £400, and there are still a fair few jars to go, so we are very encouraged. Many thanks to everyone involved.

Mystery Box Tombola!

The Caldecote Friends are hosting a Mystery Box Tombola stall at this

year’s Christmas Fayre at Caldecote Primary School. Come along on Saturday 3rd December from 2-4pm and try your luck!

How does your garden grow?

Whether you are a relatively new resident of Caldecote or your garden is an old favourite at Caldecote Open Gardens, we’d love to include your garden in this annual event, in June 2012. Once again this weekend will be a big part of our fundraising calendar, and we are always on the lookout for new gardens to include. Family-friendly, cottage or formal, your garden will be welcomed! Contact Lisa or Roger (details below) to find out more about opening your garden in aid of restoring the oldest building in our village. Last year together we raised over £1000 – every garden makes a real difference and we are incredibly grateful to those who took part in 2011.

Pancake Day is 21st February

We are planning to hold a Pancake Event, just as a fun way of celebrating our successes so far, and to begin another year of activities. Please look for further details in the next edition of the Journal. If you’ve got any ideas for pancake-based fun, or if you’d just like to help, please contact us, or come to our next meeting on Thursday 12th January.

Remember, www.caldecotefriends.org.uk provides other ways you can help:

o Ask Amazon to donate – they’ll give whenever you buy through our Amazon link, so it’s a way of fund-raising that is totally painless!

o Sponsorship made easy: our website is there to help, and it adds gift-aid.

Page 14: 2011 Christmas

o Caldecote Photo Cards, or give one of our Cookbooks: We have lovely Greetings Cards featuring work by local photographers for sale in aid of Friends’ funds: contact Lisa (see below). Or you could give a special Caldecote Cookbook: contact Roger (see below).

Thank you to everyone for all your support and very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. For any further ideas or helping hands:

Caldecote Playgroup Autumn Term

We had a lovely autumn walk in

Hardwick woods and the photos are

on now on the website –

www.caldecoteplaygroup.co.uk . The

children have asked to go again as

they enjoyed searching for bugs,

building a den with branches and had

biscuits and milk/water as a snack.

The children enjoyed talking about

Halloween and all the customs that

come with it. They took part in a

pumpkin carving activity and made

pumpkin muffins for snack. We also

talked about bonfire night and the

children made a fantastic group

display showing the different colour

fireworks. They shared their ideas

with us and said the following: 'Little

fireworks make big fireworks',

‘Fireworks, fireworks go up high', 'I

like fireworks they make a banging

noise', 'They splash', etc.

Staff and Volunteers

We have been very fortunate this year

as we have lots of volunteers helping

out at playgroup and this enables staff

to spend more one-to-one time with

children tailoring activities to support

the child’s development.

Committee We would like to thank parents for

their on-going support and are

pleased to announce that a new

parent committee was elected during

the AGM (Annual General Meeting).

The committee members are as

follows: Dan Talmage (Chair), Nicky

Wallis ( Vice Chair), Caroline

Abraham (Secretary), Susan Hordern

( Admissions), Hilary Spargo

(Funding), Sarah Talmage

(Fundraising). We are looking forward

to another fantastic year and building

on a strong Parent partnership.

Live Bus Information With parking prices rising in Cambridge, more people are deciding to travel by bus. However, waiting at the bus stop, wondering if and when the bus will appear can be a cold and sometimes frustrating experience. Readers may be interested to know that a local company is now providing free live bus information direct to your smart-phone. It shows exactly when buses will arrive and covers every bus stop within 20 miles of Cambridge. Visiting the website www.wonow.co.uk from a smart-phone will find your nearest bus stops along with their route numbers and destinations. It is quick and easy to use and buses can be checked before leaving home and at the stop. Live bus information is part of a new city guide for the Cambridge area and can be found under its Travel section. The free guide also includes listings and reviews for cinemas, theatres, music events, and restaurants. Michelle Gibson Atlas Live Ltd

Comberton Library The Comberton Library re-opens on Monday 14th November after a week's closure for the installation of self-service machines. There will be a social event on the Monday night at 7.15 for 7.30 when Rose Melikan, a Cambridge author and academic, has been invited to speak on her historical novels "The Blackstone Key", "The Counterfeit Guest" and "The Mistaken Wife". All welcome. Please try out the new system and encourage others to revisit the library. Membership increased over the summer as a result of campaigning, especially the WI birthday campaign; there were 15 new members in August and 16 in September. Perhaps budding journalists could write pieces for local press and parish magazines on why the library is important to them. On Friday 2nd December at 8pm Comberton Cantabile's Christmas entertainment in Comberton Village Hall is in aid of the Support Comberton Library fund, tickets are £7 and there will be a raffle organised by members of FOCAL. At the volunteer recruitment fair held at Cambridge Central Library I picked up job descriptions for the following posts Library visitor for the doorstep service Engage in the afternoon helper Craft volunteer Computer buddy with family history option Rhymetime assistant Reading challenge assistant Craft Assistant

Homework helper I am happy to pass on details but hope that Lynda Martin who spoke to FOCAL can advise at a future meeting about these and other opportunities to support Library Staff. Trading Standards Why pay when you don’t have to Each month at Trading Standards we receive enquiries about things people have paid for that they could have got for free. In this article, we give advice on where you may be able to save unnecessary expense. Warranties and Guarantees When you buy goods, whether on their own (like a washing machine) or as part of a larger piece of work (such as a new bathroom installation), by law those goods must be of “satisfactory quality” and be “fit for their purpose”. They must be of a standard that a person would expect, bearing in mind the price paid, and be free from minor defects, be as described, and last a reasonable length of time for a product of that type. So if, for instance, the normal life of a washing machine is 5 years and yours stops working after two years due to a defect, you may be able to claim for a repair or replacement from the business you bought it from. This is the case regardless of whether you bought a warranty or guarantee. So consider carefully whether a warranty gives you anything extra. Claiming from your debit card or credit card If you are in dispute with a trader, instead of taking them to court, find out whether your bank may be able to help you. If you paid for something on a debit card and there turns out to be problems with the purchase, many banks offer a ‘chargeback’ scheme where they refund you. Furthermore,

if you pay for something worth over £100 and pay for at least some of it on your credit card, the credit card company is equally as responsible as the business that breaks its contract with you. So, if your holiday isn’t as it was described, if your new dining table arrives damaged, or if your new TV breaks down soon after purchase, you can insist that your credit card provider helps you if the shop won’t. This is even the case if you have paid off the amount you put on your credit card. Personal Protection Insurance We have received a number of reports about companies offering to claim compensation for the mis-selling of personal protection insurance on residents’ behalf, whether in relation to a loan, mortgage or credit card. This is actually something you can do yourself. The Financial Ombudsman has produced a leaflet which is available on www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk on how to make the complaint yourself. If you don’t have access to the internet, you can contact the Financial Ombudsman for advice over the telephone on 0800 0234567. European Health Insurance cards Even though some companies sell them, you can actually obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) free of charge which entitles you to medical treatment that becomes necessary, at a reduced cost or sometimes free, when visiting a country in the European Union, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein. This is limited to treatment provided under the state scheme and you will need to produce

your EHIC card. Visit www.ehic.org.uk to find out more and apply. Legal advice There are many sources of free legal advice available to residents. Trading Standards, in partnership with Consumer Direct, offers advice to residents on issues with businesses. Visit www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/consumer to see how we can help you or call us on 0845 4040506. The Citizens Advice Bureaux offer advice on a wide range of issues including debt, benefits, employment, housing and family issues. Visit www.citizensadvice.org.uk or call 08444 111 444. Also, many people can get free legal advice under their home insurance policies; check yours to see if you can get assistance.
