2011 SEASON OUTLOOK

It’s a new look for the Camels in 2011 with the return to the Big South Conference and eight newcomers to the roster.

“We’re really excited to get things started in the Big South this season,” said head coach Leigh Mullins. “It’s a super conference for volleyball and I think we’re going to fit in really well in our first year. We’ve played some Big South schools before, so we know what to expect. I’m also excited because I think we can have a lot more support, especially on the road because most of the Big South schools are closer together.”

Campbell graduated five seniors from a year ago, all of which were integral parts of the 2010 squad’s rotation. Three four-year starters in Caitlin Bendy, Emily Werner and Caroline Hammer-sley, who will now move onto the CU coaching staff, exhausted their eligibility after last season. Werner and Bendy are among Campbell’s all-time leaders in a number of categories, most notably kills and blocks. Hammersley moved all over the court, from setter to outside to the right side, playing a number of positions and filling many important roles.

“We lost major positions in two outsides, a great middle and a setter,” said Mullins. “We lost a tremendous amount of experi-ence. I think our team this year will overcome that because we have a really hard working team, plus four transfers that already have college playing experience.”

Allyson Goldbach was a staple on the outside for the two seasons she spent in Buies Creek and proved to be the Camels’ top of-fensive weapon a year ago, leading the team in kills, aces and points while ranking second in digs. Paige Tortorello provided depth at the setter position for two seasons, starting a number of matches for the Camels.

Despite those losses, Campbell returns a strong core. The Cam-els should remain one of the top blocking teams in their confer-ence, even with the transition in leagues, anchored by senior Annie Kobeski. Campbell will also feature a high-powered attack on the outside with the return of Jordan Reaves, a more experi-enced setter in Heather Wilson and several quality additions.

The most experienced portion of the team sits in defense and passing with seniors Kelsey Campbell and Lauren Garza coming back for their final sea-sons. Campbell led the Camels in digs last year, while Garza ranked third, and second as a sophomore in 2009.

“Both of them have a lot of ex-perience and they are great kids on top of that,” said Mullins. “They are our senior captains, and they bring a lot of leader-ship to our team.”

The ReturnersIn addition to leading the Camels in digs last season, Kelsey Campbell was an All-Tournament honoree at the UNCW Beach Bash. She enters her second and final season with the Camels after a stellar two-year career at Salt Lake Community College and could

emerge as one of the Big South’s top liberos.

Garza, like Campbell, is another anchor in the Campbell defense. The Englewood, Fla. native is the only fourth-year player on the 2011 CU team as part of head coach Leigh Mullins’ first recruiting class in Buies Creek. Garza is a team captain and leader for the team while contributing on the court as well. The senior posted a career-high 27 digs against Coastal Carolina last season.

Kobeski returns as one half of the duo that ranked as one of the Atlantic Sun’s top blocking tandems last season. Kobeski notched five or more blocks six times last season and was named to the William & Mary Colonial Challenge All-Tournament team.

On the outside, Reaves was fourth on the team in kills, digs and points in 2010, and is expected to fill some of the void in scoring left by Werner and Goldbach. Reaves has been a primary option for the Camels in the past, producing in key situations last year. The Holly Springs, N.C. native collected a career-best 21 kills with 14 digs in a win at Coastal Carolina. She was also named all-tournament at the Carolina Classic last year, where the Cam-els faced No. 1 Penn State, North Carolina and Villanova.

Sophomore Lindsey Coats made significant strides as a middle blocker last season before an ankle injury sidelined the then freshman. She will see a considerable increase in sets this season with the departure of Bendy. In five of her 10 matches, Coats recorded multiple blocks.

Wilson, another sophomore, will be the Camels’ primary setter in 2011. The Concord, N.C. native led the team in assists and finished one off the team-high in aces last season despite split-ting time with two others at the setter position. Wilson garnered UNCW Beach Bash All-Tournament accolades, totaling 67 assists and eight aces in the three match tournament. She registered 20 or more assists 11 times and 30 twice, while posting multiple aces eight times.

Avery Anderson redshirted last season and preserved her year of eligibility, practicing with the team. Anderson, another quality setter, will provide depth at that position. With her redshirt sea-son, Anderson practiced with the team and gained game experi-

ence during spring scrimmages. While Wilson’s technique is her strong suite, Anderson’s athleticism will help the Camels in 2011.

The NewcomersCampbell will also add eight new faces to the roster this fall, covering every position except setter, where the Camels already have two with at least three years of eligibility each.

Mallorie Cubillos will round out the defensive unit for the Camels behind Campbell and Garza. The defensive specialist already has some familiarity with the team, having played high school vol-leyball alongside Jordan Reaves at Holly Springs High where the pair notched two conference championships. Jessica Groen transfers from North Carolina State with four years of eligibility after redshirting her first and only year in Raleigh. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter is expected to be one of the Camels’ primary offensive options with her great height and swing power.

Brooke Kelley, a former district and area player of the year, led Colonial Forge High School to three district tournament and two regular season championships in three years. Kelley also pos-sesses great height and athleticism for her position and should be a contributor on the right side.

Kelsey Marek, who signed early along with Kelley, was a NJCAA All-American at Temple Junior College. The middle blocker could find a spot in the lineup beside Kobeski on the interior having been one of the top junior college blockers for the past two sea-sons. Marek led Temple to a No. 12 seed in the national tourna-ment in 2010.

Chelsey Pachoud, another transfer with Division I experience, played at Quinnipiac in 2009, finishing third on the team in kills, digs, service aces and assists, and fourth in blocks. Coming in as a redshirt sophomore this season, Pachoud registered three double-doubles for the Bobcats, including 14 kills and 12 digs in the team’s season-ending win over Saint Francis (Pa.).

Ally Russo is another big hitter that is expected to make an im-mediate impact on the outside. One of the top outside hitters in a strong California junior college circuit, Russo led Cabrillo College to a No. 4 ranking in California last season and a Nor-Cal Championship.

Kendall Tart, like Cubillos and Coats, is a local product. Tart will add depth to the 2011 Camels. The 6-foot right side hitter has played a number of positions at the prep level.

Lorin Thomas is the final member of the eight-player class, and perhaps the most versatile of the group. Thomas possesses the height to play middle, standing at 6-foot-2, and will also see time on the right side.

2011 Schedule and the Move Back to the Big SouthCampbell’s 2011 volleyball schedule will feature a full slate of Big South games as well as five tournaments and eight home dates.

“It’s a much different schedule than last season, not only with who we play in con-ference, but also with our tournaments,” said Mullins. “I think our tournament schedule will better prepare our team for the long haul of the season.”

The season will kick off on Friday, Aug. 26 in Durham, N.C. when the Camels take on

North Carolina Central in a tournament hosted by the Eagles. Campbell will also see former Atlantic Sun rival Florida Gulf Coast and Elon over the weekend.

“We have a great preseason schedule to get us ready for confer-ence play,” said Mullins. “We play both Wisconsin and Duke, giv-ing our players an opportunity to see where our program needs to be in order to compete at the top of our conference and in the NCAA Tournament.”

Sept. 2 and 3 will see the Camels travel to Raleigh, N.C. for a tournament hosted by North Carolina State. CU will face off against Wisconsin, Western Carolina and North Carolina A&T in addition to the Wolfpack.

After Campbell makes its home debut on Sept. 6 against UNC Wilmington, the Camels will return to the road with Charlotte, Furman and Morgan State at Charlotte.

For the second straight season, CU will head to historic Cameron Indoor Stadium to meet the Blue Devils of Duke. This season’s matchup will be on Sept. 13 in Durham, N.C.

The Camels’ final pair of tournaments will be at Elon and at High Point. Campbell will take on the Phoenix and NC Central on Sept. 16 and 17 before traveling to HPU on Sept. 23 and 24, where the Camels will see Maryland Eastern Shore and Norfolk State in addition to the Panthers.

The Sept. 23 match with High Point will mark the Camels’ first Big South conference game since 1993, when CU joined the A-Sun, then known as the Trans America Athletic Conference.

“Our Big South schedule will be very competitive, playing Liberty, Coastal and High Point twice,” added Mullins. “We’re definitely looking forward to building new, and renewing old rivalries and traditions with our new conference members.”

From there, Campbell will play a full 14-match Big South sched-ule, with home contests featuring Radford, Liberty, Winthrop, Presbyterian, High Point, Charleston Southern and Coastal Caro-lina. The Camels will also head to Coastal Carolina, Charleston Southern, UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, Liberty and Radford.

The Big South Tournament will be held Nov. 17-20 in Charleston, S.C.

Leigh Mullins begins her fourth season at the helm of the Camp-bell volleyball program after joining the Camels in March of 2008.

Last season, the Camels, guided by Mullins, trekked through arguably the most difficult schedule in CU history, lining up opposite defending national champion and No. 1 team in the country, Penn State, as well as nationally-ranked Duke and North Carolina.

The Camels won the UNC Wilmington Beach Bash, posting vic-tories over North Carolina State and Elon as Allyson Goldbach earned tournament MVP accolades. Kelsey Campbell and Heather Wilson also earned all-tournament recognition at UNCW. The win over NC State was Campbell’s second in as many seasons against the Wolfpack.

Jordan Reaves, Annie Kobeski also garnered all-tournament rec-ognition throughout the season.

Goldbach took home Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors af-ter leading the Camels to a 3-2 road win at Coastal Carolina with 21 kills and 23 digs, adding a pair of aces.

The Camels continued to be one of the top blocking teams in the A-Sun under Mullins’ direction, setting single-game records in a 3-0 win over Florida Gulf Coast in Buies Creek.

In 2009, her second season in Buies Creek, Mullins piloted the Camels to one of the biggest turnarounds in the A-Sun.

Led by Mullins, the Camels went from seven total wins in 2008 to 17 in 2009, the team’s most wins in nearly a decade, matching the program’s win totals of both 2000 and 2001. Campbell also set a record for A-Sun wins, taking 10 on the year.

The Camels were also one of the A-Sun’s top road teams in 2009, posting a 13-6 record away from Buies Creek.

For the second straight year, the Camels made an appearance in the Atlantic Sun Tournament, marking the first time since the 1997 and 1998 seasons that a CU team had made consecutive postseason appearances.

The team posted its most attack attempts (4,234) and digs (1,847) since 2005. The Camels also notched their best at-tack percentage (.193), service percentage (.924), digs per set (15.52) and reception percentage (.929) rates over the five year span.

Campbell also led the A-Sun in blocks per set at 2.23 per frame; as one of only two teams in the league to average two or more blocks per set.

Four Camels received accolades for their play on the court dur-ing the 2009 season. Ashley Weers, who was an all-freshman performer in 2006, became the first Camel to garner First Team All A-Sun accolades since Tinsley Gordon in 2000, and only the third in school history to receive the award since Campbell joined the A-Sun in 1994. The middle blocker from Littleton, Col. led the A-Sun in attack percentage and set a new school record in the category.

Jordan Reaves also earned all-league rec-ognition, being selected to the A-Sun All-Freshman team. Reaves, a Holly Springs, N.C. native, was the second Camel fresh-man in as many years to earn all-rookie honors under Mullins, after setter Hope Leatigaga was named to the squad in 2008.

Outside hitter Emily Werner also notched 2009 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) All-State accolades after leading the Camels in kills and points. Werner was the fourth Camel to ever receive the honor, and the first since 2006.

In Mullins’ first season as a Camel, CU qualified for postseason play for the first time since 2001, making a trip to Macon, Ga. for the Atlantic Sun Tournament. The Camels more than doubled their confer-

ence win total from 2007 as well, put-ting together a sweep of a league op-ponent for the fist time in eight years, downing Stetson by a combined score of 6-1 between the two matches.

The team also managed to win their opening home match for only the sec-ond time in seven years, and were able to begin the conference season with a win for the third time in that same span.

Over the past three seasons, 19 student-athletes have earned A-Sun All-Academic accolades, including eight last season.

Mullins, who has experience building programs at both the Division I and junior college levels, served as Dean of Students at Hopewell Academy in Cary prior to being named head coach at CU in March of 2008. She was head coach at Northwestern (La.) State University four years (2002-2005) and three sea-sons at Neosho County (Kan.) Commu-nity College (1998-2000).

Mullins led Northwestern State to its three best seasons in 19 years of Southland Conference volleyball compe-tition before leaving in early 2006 to join her husband, Ty, who had been transferred to the Triangle by his employer. She guided the Lady Demons to 25 Southland wins in her four seasons, 22 in the final three, bolstering a program that had only 26 confer-ence wins in its 15 previous seasons in the SLC.

She capped her NSU head coaching career with a 45-83 overall record and a 25-53 mark in conference play after taking over a program that had won just 31 percent of its games overall and only 16 percent of its SLC contests under four head coaches prior to her hiring.

Mullins’ teams posted a 22-36 (.379) SLC mark in her final three seasons, going 17-19 (.472) in the last two years, including the .500 mark in 2005. In 2005, the Lady Demons finished sixth in the 11-team league, an all-time best performance, and quali-fied for the first time ever for the SLC Tournament. Northwest-ern (11-16 overall, 9-9 in the SLC) posted a school-record nine SLC victories.

Three 2005 seniors, two recruited by Mullins, received honorable mention All-SLC recog-nition, when only one NSU player prior to Mullins’ arrival had ever been included on an all-conference team.

Two of her recruits became the first Lady De-mons to earn All-SLC status and another was the first NSU player ever to receive Freshman of the Year honors from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. Twelve of her NSU play-ers gained Southland All-Conference Academ-ic recognition during her tenure.

At Neosho County (Kan.) Community College, Mullins posted a 96-36 coaching record in three seasons as head coach before mov-ing to Northwestern in 2002 as an assistant coach. While at Neosho County, 14 of her

athletes were named to all-conference teams and six gained all-region honors. She was named 2000 Jayhawk Conference Coach of the Year.

Nathan Leggett begins his fourth season as assistant volleyball coach at Campbell University. At CU, Leggett assists in all facets of the Fighting Camel volleyball program and serves as its re-cruiting coordinator.

Over the last two seasons at CU, Leggett has been largely responsible for the top-notch incoming classes, also cultivating multiple all-conference players.

Last season, Leggett’s aid paced the Camels through arguably the most difficult schedule in program history. Campbell posted a tournament win in the UNC Wilmington Beach Bash as Allyson Goldbach earned tournament MVP accolades. Kelsey Campbell and Heather Wilson also earned all-tournament recognition at UNCW.

Jordan Reaves, Annie Kobeski also garnered all-tournament rec-ognition throughout the season.

In 2009, assisted by Leggett, the Camels enjoyed one of their best seasons in a decade, winning 17 matches for their first winning season since 2001. The win total was also the matched 2000 and 2001 for the third most wins for the CU program ever.

With Leggett’s aid, Ashley Weers was named First Team All Atlantic Sun, while Jordan Reaves garnered league All-Freshman Team honors. Emily Werner, meanwhile, earned North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) All-State accolades.

In his first season with the Camels, his first coaching at the collegiate level, Leggett helped the Camels to their first Atlantic Sun Tournament ap-pearance in seven years, while rookie setter Hope Leatigaga earned Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team honors.

Prior to joining the Fighting Camel program, Leggett enjoyed several successful stints at the club level. Last Spring, Leggett coached the Harnett Area Volleyball Club (HAVC) 17 Gold Division, ending the season second in the region with a 20-6 record and two tournament titles.

Before coming to Campbell, Leggett was at the helm of the Carolina Ju-niors, as well as Alexander Graham Middle School, both based out of Charlotte, N.C., where he was a coach and teacher for two years.

At Alexander Graham, Leggett’s efforts transformed a program that had won just five matches in three years, to an 11-3 record in 2007, finishing the season with a second place finish in the conference.

With the Carolina Juniors, the Columbus, Ohio native guided the squad to a 14-5 mark in 2007, including a win at the Elon Tournament Championship. The team also produced a pair of collegiate student-athletes, including Cori Holman, who earned an all-tournament selection at the Elon Tourney and now plays at Charleston Southern, and Alysse Hucko, now at Evangel Univer-sity.

Leggett earned a degree in middle childhood education in math and science from Ohio University in 2005, where he coached another club team, the Aleta Aces. The team won its respective division under Leggett’s guidance. The Columbus, Ohio native completed his master’s of athletic administration from Ohio in June 2011.

In all, Leggett has guided his teams to a 75-29 record, including his time spent in Ohio and North Carolina.

At Ohio, Leggett also played on the school’s men’s club volleyball team, where he served as captain and president for his final two years, aiding a seventh place national finish in 2003. As a libero and outside hitter, Leggett helped the club amass a 64-54 record over the four year span.

Leggett resides in Fuquay-Varina.

Former Camel standout Ashley Weers joined the Campbell Uni-versity volleyball coaching staff in 2010 and enters her second season as an assistant coach. Weers assists in all facets of the program.

After a standout four-year playing career with the Camels, Weers moved to the Campbell sidelines as a coach.

Weers ranks among the top blockers in Campbell volleyball his-tory, finishing her career standing in the CU all-time top-10 in total (sixth), solo (ninth) and assisted (sixth) blocks. As a senior, the Littleton, Col. native posted the best single-season attack percentage in school history, notching a .368 rate, which also led the Atlantic Sun.

In 2009, Weers was named A-Sun First Team All-Conference after her stellar senior year, becoming the first Camel to collect first team honors since Tinsley Gordon in 2000, and only the third A-Sun first team member in program history since joining A-Sun in 1994. Weers is also the fifth Camel in history to receive multiple A-Sun accolades, being named to the conference’s all-freshmen team in 2006. Only Jennie Heries took home multiple all-conference honors during Campbell’s stay in the Big South. Heries remains as Campbell’s only two-time first team all-confer-ence player, being named all-Big South in 1989 and 1990.

The former middle blocker was also named A-Sun Player of the Week twice during the season, taking the league’s first weekly honor of the season after grabbing all-tournament recognition at the NC State/Hilton RTP Classic, where Weers hit .391 on the tournament, committing only five attack errors on 87 chances, and smashing 39 kills with 12 total blocks. The Camels grabbed a 4-0 record in that tournament that included a 3-0 sweep of NC State, Campbell’s first-ever three-set win over a major confer-ence opponent.

Weers was again named player of the week after leading the Camels to five consecutive A-Sun wins. Weers averaged 3.00 kills and 1.00 blocks per set for the Camels, converting 36 of 82 attack attempts with just eight errors for a .341 rate.

With Weers leading the way on the court, the Camels recorded their best season since 2001, notching 17 wins, a remarkable 10 win turnaround from the previous year. The Camels also made their second consecutive A-Sun Tournament appearance for the first time since 1997-98.

Weers also has coaching experience at the club level, serving as a coach for the Harnett Area Volleyball Club (HAVC).

While assisting head coach Leigh Mullins, who she played under for two seasons, Weers will work toward her master’s of business administration at Campbell. She completed her bachelor’s degree in sport management in May of 2010.

After completing a superb four-year playing career at Campbell, Caroline Hammersley joins the Camel staff as a student assistant coach.

A Raleigh, N.C. native, Hammersley was a fixture in the starting lineup at various positions on the court, and was honored with the team’s coaches award as a senior.

Hammersley converted to setter as a freshman, leading the team in assists that season. During her sophomore and junior cam-paigns, Hammersley split time as a right side and outside hitter, collecting 36 starts and playing in 60 matches over the two sea-sons. As a senior Hammersley was slowed by a shoulder injury and played in 10 matches.

Over the last five years, Hammersley has gained experience on the sideline, coaching various club and prep teams and camps.

From 2006 to 2009, she served as a coach for Triangle Volleyball Club’s Setter’s Academy, Youth Volleyball Program and Advanced Camp, coaching setters, as well as outside and right side hitters in the latter.

She has also served as an instructor at Cardinal Gibbons High School’s Volleyball Camp from 2004 to 2008, and Campbell’s summer camp.

Hammersley, who was honored twice as an Atlantic Sun All-Aca-demic team member, is working to complete Campbell’s Trust and Wealth Management 3/2 program. Hammersley will graduate in 2012 with a degree in trust and wealth management, a minor in financial planning and a master’s in business administration.

Athletic TrainingCU’s Athletic Training staff offers all Fighting Camel student-ath-letes the best available medical care for athletic injuries. They design and implement programs to prevent, manage and treat athletic injuries. They also supervise injury rehabilitation pro-grams that are designed to return athletes to athletic activity as quickly and safely as possible.

The athletic training services program is directed by head ath-letic trainer Quinton Sawyer, three assistant athletic trainers and four graduate assistants. In addition, the staff also provides the education to a number of students majoring in athletic training. These students are enrolled in a challenging academic major that not only requires that they make the grade in the classroom but also must excel in real-life situations.

The education program is directed by Catherine Simonson. The Athletic Training staff also works closely with Dr. Chris Stewart, M.D., and Mr. Jerry Brenneman, P.A., of Campbell University Student Health Services and team physicians, Dr. Bill Hage of Tri-angle Orthopedics in Raleigh and Dr. Michael Hart of Cary Family Practice and Sports Medicine in Cary to provide quality physi-cian services to student-athletes. Other allied health care needs available within the athletic training services program include optometry, dentistry, chiropractic and sports massage.

Strength and ConditioningThe Campbell University strength and conditioning facilities are located at the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center and the Willard B. Harris Training Center. Although specific strength and conditioning programs are designed for each sport, the basic goal is the same – to help athletes increase their full potential in all areas of fitness: strength, speed, flexibility and stamina.

Workouts are supervised by Andrew Carter, who is in his third year as head strength and conditioning coach. To assist in the student-athlete’s routines, the improved facilities are stocked with a wide array of free weights, stationary plate-loaded ma-chines and a number of aerobic machines.

Members of each of CU’s 20 varsity teams meet on a weekly basis, with some teams training and preparing for competition several times a week. Campbell’s strength and conditioning pro-gram has an ultimate goal of achieving the maximum potential, in order to better prepare student-athletes in competition.

Student-Athlete Support ProgramThe Campbell Athletics Department is committed to academic excellence and to promoting student-athlete welfare through the broad-based Student-Athlete Support Program. Under the guid-ance of Malinda Ashcraft, Associate Athletics Director for Aca-demic Services and Campbell’s Senior Women’s Administrator, programs are available that provide opportunities for student-athletes to grow academically, socially, spiritually, emotionally and physically.

The Student-Athlete Support Program was created to assist stu-dent-athletes with a number of issues ranging from the develop-ment of personal responsibility and educational goals to address-ing personal and social problems that are unique to the Division I student-athlete.

Some of the services offered through the Student-Athlete Sup-port Program are the Individual Study Plan program, tutorial sessions, study halls, one-on-one academic advising, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, NCAA Life Skills and other academic support services.

The Academic Support Center is the focal point of the program. The center is open seven days a week with flexible hours de-signed to accommodate the busy schedule of a student-athlete.

The center has been designed to serve as an optimal learning environment, while providing the student-athlete with all the tools necessary to achieve academic success.

The center is equipped with several computer work stations, individual study carrels, and areas for monitored group study and tutorial work. Tutorial sessions of different subject areas are provided several times a week for the student-athletes. The cen-ter also provides the student-athlete with a convenient place to study, either individually or in a group setting, where his or her progress can be supervised.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is comprised of members of the 20 varsity sport programs at Campbell who are nominated by their head coaches. The group was organized to facilitate communication and involvement between student-ath-letes and administrators and to better integrate athletes into the general student body.

As a branch of the SAAC, the Camels CARE Team is comprised of student-advisory members, whose mission is to develop ways to increase university representation in community service activi-ties. Proposed committee activities include: Special Olympics, “Adopt-a-Grandparent,” tutoring services for local grade schools, the Big Brother / Big Sister organization and a speakers’ bureau.

To these young adults, athletics becomes more than an end in itself, but rather a means by which they may fully develop their character, and in the process, make a positive impact on the world around them.

The Fighting CamelMany stories exist as to the origin of the nickname “Fighting Camels” and the adoption of a camel as the mascot of Camp-bell University athletic teams. To date, there is still uncertainty as to why the unique mascot (only one other school in the United States - and none in Division I - has the nickname “Camels”) was chosen.

According to historian J. Winston Pearce, author of “Camp-bell College, Big Miracle in Little Buies Creek,” the nickname’s origin perhaps stretches back to the turn of the century when all but one of the school’s original buildings were destroyed by fire. In the aftermath, Z.T. Kivett visited the school’s founder and president, Dr. James Archibald Campbell, at his residence.

As Dr. Campbell bemoaned the fate of the institution he had worked 13 years to build, Mr. Kivett encouraged him, “Your name’s Campbell; then get a hump on you! We’ve got work to do.” Dr. Campbell thought that Mr. Kivett said, “You’re a camel, get a hump on you.” Hence the nomadic nickname.

Campbell’s athletic teams were originally named the “Hornets.” Copies of Creek Pebbles, the school newspaper, in the 1920s and 1930s described the teams as “Hornets.” Other references to the athletic teams were “The Campbells” or the “Campbel-lites.”

Although an official date is unknown, the changing of the mascot to a camel came in late 1933 or early 1934. There is no explanation why the nickname was changed to Camels, only this one sentence was printed in the Jan. 13, 1934 issue of Creek Pebbles: “Eight new men were recently initiated into Campbell’s monogram club, which has changed its name from ‘Hornets’ to ‘Camels.’” From that point on, all Campbell athletic teams have proudly worn the Camel mascot.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competi-tive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the

classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, ath-letic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Lead-ers Through Athletics.”

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the addi-tions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Con-ference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status.

During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, includ-ing volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first auto-matic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance pro-grams, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 15 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television ex-posure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initi-ated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the addi-tions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997. The Conference’s 19th championship sport -- women’s lacrosse, will begin play in 2012-13 with seven members. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 11 member institutions comprise the 28-year League in 2011-12. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian College, plus the return of charter member Campbell University this year. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Confer-ence introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 700 events

annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has expe-rienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, more than 240 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and base-ball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship six times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, has had four NFL Draft picks, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event.

In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Bas-ketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four out of the last seven years – including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run), Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. Last season, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Sec-ond Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team – one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the Games; VMI’s Reggie Wil-liams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won four PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007 and tied for runner-up at the 2011 Open Championship.

The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 mo-ment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annu-ally, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its 27 years of exis-tence. Furthermore, the Big South has a record number of NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last two years.
