Financial Report

We are pleased to present the First Texas Council’s 2011 Annual Report and hope you

enjoy reading highlights of the year. Through our co-educational programs offering

camping, outdoor education, truancy prevention, after school and summer programs, we

directly served thousands of youth. In addition, by equipping those who work in the care

and education of our youngest children, Camp Fire extended its reach to thousands more

children, infants to age five through training for child care professionals.

In 2011, the First Texas Council was selected as one of

ten councils in the nation for a 3-year pilot for THRIVE,

a research-based youth development curriculum that

will reflect the Camp Fire focus. While many youth

development organizations aspire to and achieve worthy

and socially important aims, Camp Fire USA has integrated

an asset-based philosophy into its program model, with

the ultimate goal of preparing children and youth as

citizens and leaders today as well as tomorrow.

As the new year begins, ground is being broken on Camp

El Tesoro’s new Equestrian Center, to be completed by

summer 2012. The $10.3 million Campaign for El Tesoro

continues to garner support for the renovation and

revitalization of this critical asset through which Camp Fire fulfills its mission to build

caring, confident youth who respect the environment.

We appreciate Camp Fire’s donors, partners and volunteers and their commitment to

the First Texas Council’s mission. We are pleased with the financial success of 2011, as

reflected by our operating statement. With your support, we will continue to prepare

children, youth and families for the 21st century and the opportunities ahead.

Award Recipients

The First Texas Council would like to acknowledge our appreciation and gratitude to its 2011 national award recipients.The Blue Ribbon Award recognizes special volunteers or supportive community members who have given “above and beyond.” The Wakan Award is given for exceptional and imaginative leadership and service to youth and the community. The Sebago Award recognizes outstanding volunteers in the field of camping and outdoor programs.

Program Spotlight

According to Andy Acevedo, just over a year ago he was living life for the day and wasn’t thinking about tomorrow. The 16-year-old North Side High School student was constantly skipping school and on a path to academic failure. “I came home one day and my mom told me she’d signed me up for the Step Up program,” he said. After getting involved in the program, the changes have been dramatic. “I’ve become more considerate and respectful, learned how to control my emotions, and am studying more.” During his first year in Step Up, Andy received recognition for “Most Improved” in English and World Geography. Now a sophomore, he’s in an advanced placement English class. “Since joining Step Up, I’ve become more self-aware, and more aware of how my decisions are going to affect my life,” he said. “If it weren’t for Step Up, I’d still be on the wrong path.” Andy Acevedo

Program Spotlight continued

In October 2011, Trinity Valley School third-graders spent their longest field trip ever at the El Tesoro Outdoor Education program, as part of the Trojan Outdoor Experience (TOE). “The goal of TOE is to promote growth, leadership and learning through experiences not typically shared in a normal classroom,” said Blake Amos, Director of Experiential Education. When quizzed, students agreed fossil-hunting was the highlight. “Looking for fossils was awesome – getting wet and muddy was the best part!” according to Lauren. In addition to the fossil curriculum, students did a nature science walk and enjoyed archery and group games. “Our partnership with El Tesoro helped us introduce our students to all the amazing opportunities that await us outside. Camp Fire allowed us to give the third graders a first taste of our program while creating lasting memories and friendships that we will continue to build upon.”

Each week, 45 child care professionals care for 250 infants through K-5 at the Inspiring Body of Christ Mary L. Rush Children’s College in Dallas. “This is where it starts,” said Cecelia Dixon, director. Dixon, who started her 13-year child development career with training from Camp Fire, emphasized the importance of these early years. “We recently recognized 10th graders who had started as infants in our program,” she said. “Academically, every one of them is now in the gifted and talented program.” Ms. Dixon credits the success to the quality of early care. “The quality of training our staff receives directly impacts the quality of care we provide,” she noted. Her team was honored for completing more than 240 hours of training between May 2010 and May 2011 with First Texas Council. “We consider Camp Fire as experts in the field of professional development. That’s why we choose Camp Fire.”

Camp Fire After School programs and Child Development Center provided quality care and developmental activities to 1,052 children in Tarrant, Parker and Johnson counties.

Workforce Solutions of North Central Texas and CCMS of Tarrant County partnered with Camp Fire to improve the quality of early childhood programs in North Texas by delivering credentialing programs to 296 child care providers.

More than 3,700 children, youth and adults participated in Camp Fire’s resident camp, day camps, family camping, outdoor education and community use programs.

Camp Fire presented the 2011 Excellence in Child Care awards at the 6th Annual Celebration of Child Care Champions dinner attended by more than 400 area child care professionals.

Camp Fire provided professional training, education and support to 3,636 child care providers through 171 classes and workshops.

“Teens in Action,” Camp Fire’s new Youth Action Committee, kicked off with its first meeting in November 2011. Youth ages 13-18 met to begin the conversation “How Can We Make a Difference?”

Through the Step Up truancy prevention program, Camp Fire provided individualized attention to 83 at-risk area high school students to help keep them actively engaged in school.

Camp Fire, with support from the United Way of Tarrant County Women’s Leadership Council, awarded 24 Child Development Associate scholarships to child care professionals who work at Tarrant County-based child care centers.
