Last season the Vulcans finished with an 11-5-2 overall record, including an unbeaten 6-0-2 mark at Roadman Park, behind strong goalkeeping and timely goal scoring. Cal U head coach Dennis Laskey, who is entering his 26th season at the helm, must replace record-breaking goalkeeper Derek Yobbi who played every minute of every game in 2010, posting nine shutouts and a 0.91 goals-against average. The three-time All-PSAC selection, who signed to play professionally with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds following the season, finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in GAA and goalie minutes. Laskey will not have to look far to find Yobbi’s replacement as Charlie Dagnal returns for his final season after redshirting in 2010. Both goalkeepers came in prior to the 2007 season and split time their first three years. In 31 career games (11 starts), Dagnal has posted an 8-5-1 record with 83 saves. Defensively, the Vulcans return a pair of Daktronics all-region performers in senior Mike Kalas and junior Nemanja Visekruna. Kalas, a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, has started all 60 games in his career and proved he could contribute on offense in 2010, tallying three goals and seven points after posting a previous career high of three points as a freshman. Visekruna, an All-PSAC and NSCAA all-region selection in his first year after transitioning to defense, is the leading returning scorer after finishing his sophomore campaign a perfect five-of-five on penalty kicks and recording six goals and 15 points. However, Cal U features a pair of open starting positions on defense after losing two players that combined for almost 100 career starts. Senior Mikey Juricich will open training camp as one of the top contenders for one of the starting spots after having played in 31 games the last two seasons.

Junior Chris Moehler is the elder statesman in the midfield, having played in 37 career games while recording four goals and 13 points. Last year, he led the team with a career-high five assists while starting all but one game. Moehler will be joined in the midfield by the trio of sophomores Scott Campbell, Gaby Deller-Borgono and Christopher Karns, who combined to post two goals, seven assists and 11 points in 24 starts as freshmen. Deller-Borgono led the group with one goal and four assists last season, while Karns added one goal and two assists in just 12 games due to injury. The midfield will also receive a boost with the addition of senior Edin Sabic, a transfer from Missouri State. Sabic, the brother of assistant coach Emedin Sabic, played in 45 games with 21 starts in three years for the Bears and tallied two goals and seven points. After losing their top scorer from a season ago, the Vulcans will look to replace Russell Bootwright and his eight goals and 19 points. Leading the way will be senior Brady Sanders and junior Ryan Grindle who each tied for third on the team with four goals and nine points in 2010 and combined to start 26 games at forward. Sanders and Grindle each established career highs with nine points after the pair combined to start only seven games in 2009. Sophomore James DelGreco will also look to contribute to an attack that ranked seventh in the PSAC in total offense. The offense figures to see a boost from a pair of transfers in junior Paul Silvestrone and sophomore Ryan Slaby. Silvestrone comes to Cal U after playing two years at Wheeling Jesuit, where he was a two-time All-WVIAC performer. In two years with the Cardinals, he started 35 games while recording 11 goals and 23 points. Last year, Silvestrone led the team in scoring behind a team-best five goals. Slaby, a transfer from Duquesne, last played for the Dukes in 2007 when he started 13 games.

The longest tenured Cal U head coach, Dennis Laskey enters his 26th season (21st consecutive) at the helm of the men’s soccer program in 2011. He ranks in the top 25 nationally among active head coach in NCAA Division II in career victories. Laskey has been with the Vulcans for almost the entire 28 years of the program, dating back to the inaugural season of 1984. During his time at Cal U, he holds a 235-213-35 overall record (.523) with five appearances in the PSAC Championship Game and two berths in the NCAA Tournament. After the 2010 season, record-setting goalkeeper Derek Yobbi signed a contract to play professionally with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) PRO league. Behind an improbable late-season surge in 2008, Cal U won the PSAC West title and claimed the program’s first-ever PSAC Tournament Championship. The Vulcans also garnered a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004. In addition to his 26 years with the men’s program, Laskey was also instrumental in the creation of the women’s soccer program at Cal U. He served as the first head coach for the women’s program in 1990 and coached both the men’s and women’s soccer teams from 1991-2001. A native of nearby Dunlevy, Pa., he has coached five players that were inducted into the Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame. Nicholas Addlery, who plays professionally, and Audrey Dawson were both inducted into the

Cal U Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. Laskey played in the Pennsylvania West Soccer League for more than four decades and was a member of the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) National Championship team in 2005. Two years later, he was inducted into the Mid-Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame. A four-year starting defender at Alderson-Broaddus, Laskey earned honorable mention from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC). Following his time at A-B, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1972 and continued his playing career throughout Europe for the U.S. Navy Phiblant team stationed in the Mediterranean. Laskey, who finished his degree at Cal U after his tour of duty, entered the coaching ranks as head coach at Charleroi High School from 1978-83. He also served as the co-founder and first president of the Mon Valley Youth Soccer Association. He moved to the collegiate game in 1983 working with the Vulcan men’s soccer team on the club level before the program moved to the NCAA level in 1984. He coached Cal U for five seasons, winning three-straight West Penn Intercollegiate Soccer

conference titles (1986-88) that included NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA teams. In 1989, he moved back to the scholastic level coaching Upper St. Clair High School to a pair of WPIAL titles before returning back to Cal U to start the women’s soccer program. Laskey, who holds a master’s degree in sport management and a post-baccalaureate degree in athletic administration from Cal U, resides in Charleroi, Pa., with his wife Jeanne. The couple has three children, Deni Lynn, Deiter and Marissa, and three grandchildren, Jesse, Jude and Priya.

A veteran of the Cal U soccer programs, Emedin Sabic enters his second year with the men’s soccer team in 2011. Sabic previously served three seasons as an assistant coach with the women’s soccer program. Sabic helped lead the Vulcan women’s team to unprecedented success over his tenure, as the program won a combined 31 games in 2008-09 after managing only four victories in 2007. In 2009, Cal U won its first-ever PSAC West title and appeared in its first PSAC and NCAA Tournaments. On the national stage, the Vulcans advanced

to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament after allowing only one goal in their first three tournament games. Originally from Bosnia, Sabic is no stranger to men’s soccer in the PSAC after playing four years for head men’s soccer coach Dennis Laskey from 2003-06. He registered 11 goals and 11 assists, while playing 82 career games (55 starts) for Cal U. During his playing career, the Vulcans compiled 45 victories and reached the PSAC Championship Game three-straight years. As a sophomore in 2004, the Vulcans qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time

in school history. The following year, Cal U tied the school record with 14 wins. Sabic moved to Germany in 1991 and played club soccer in Europe until his family moved to the United States in 1999. He attended Cathedral Prep in Erie, Pa., and helped lead the Ramblers to a state championship in 2001. He was a three-time, first-team all-metro and first-team all-district selection while playing at Prep. Sabic earned his undergraduate degree in business administration from Cal U in 2007 and completed his master’s degree in 2008. He currently holds a “C” license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) all-regional diploma.

2010 REVIEWABOUT CAL U

BUILDING CHARACTER. BUILDING CAREERS. California University of Pennsylvania is a diverse, caring and scholarly learning community dedicated to excellence in the liberal arts, science and technology, and professional studies. For more than 150 years Cal U has been known for its educational excellence and for its commitment to the core values of Integrity, Civility and Responsibility. At Cal U, students are our first priority. As an undergraduate, students can choose from more than 150 programs of study in three undergraduate colleges. Whether one is interested in using robotic technology in the field of engineering or helping to shape the future as an early childhood educator, students will find an academic program perfect for them. When our core values of Integrity, Civility and Responsibility are coupled with real-world training, we see a big difference in the types of jobs our graduates get. To advance our mission of building the character and careers of students, Cal U relies upon committed faculty, motivated students, challenging programs and exceptional facilities. Our Character Education Institute provides character education to Cal U students, faculty and staff, and corporate training to regional organizations and businesses. The institute serves as a resource center for education majors, and assists school districts and local organizations in advancing character development.

For 10-straight semesters, Cal U athletic programs have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher.

Last year, the Vulcans made 11 team and 11 individual appearances in NCAA postseason play.

A total of 225 Cal U student-athletes, representing all sports were named to the Spring 2011 edition of the Cal U Athletic Director Honor Roll after a record 240 athletes earned the honor for the Fall 2010 semester.

SEASON REVIEW20

10 RE

VIEW

For the 11th time in the past 13 seasons, Cal U posted double-digit victories, finishing 2010 with an 11-5-2 overall record. The Vulcans showed dominance at home, by posting an unbeaten 6-0-2 record at Roadman Park for the first time in recent program history. The Vulcans received several postseason awards for their success. Three Cal U players were named All-PSAC with seniors Adam Green and Derek Yobbi joining sophomore Nemanja

Visekruna on the second-team. Green and Visekruna were honored for the first time, while Yobbi received his third All-PSAC accolade. In addition to the All-PSAC members, the Vulcans also had three players recognized as part of the Daktronics Atlantic All-Region Teams. Junior Mike Kalas was voted to the first team while Visekruna and freshman Russell Bootwright received second team nods. Kalas also received ESPN Academic All-District recognition for the second-straight season. Green, Kalas and Visekruna were integral parts of a defense that allowed just 0.94 goal per game. Along with their defense, each posted career-highs in at least one offensive category with Visekruna finishing second on the team with six goals, including five-of-five on penalty kicks. Bootwright became the first freshman to lead the Vulcans in goals (eight) and points (19) in recent history.

Yobbi finished his stellar career among the elite goalkeepers in both Cal U and PSAC history. He closed the book on a career that has him listed among the all-time leaders in saves, goals-against average and minutes. A four-year starter, Yobbi posted a 38-22-6 overall mark and recorded 16 shutouts, including nine in 2010.

HISTORY

PSAC Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-

Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division

II, seven league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over

710,000 alumni, including 483,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16

member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media

relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

MEN’S SOCCER HISTORY

20

The game of soccer is deeply rooted in the Mon Valley region surrounding California University of Pennsylvania. The tiny borough of Dunlevy, Pa., formed a soccer recreation league that began to teach the game and develop players in the 1970s. It is because of this league that every year head coach Dennis Laskey and the Cal U men’s soccer program host “Dunlevy Day,” in which players, coaches and alumni of that league are invited and recognized at a Vulcan soccer game. Without the tireless efforts of those individuals who helped increase awareness of the sport, soccer would not have reached the popularity it has in the area. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the game of soccer exploded onto the American college scene. Laskey worked with the administration at the time to help form a men’s soccer program. In 1983, working out in the gym at 5:30 a.m. because that was the only practice time available to them, Laskey entered a group of young men in to the Keystone Soccer League (KSL), which was a part of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) amateur league. The point of this was simple: build enough interest in the sport and program to eventually be able to make the transition to creating a full-time intercollegiate program. Laskey went to Cal U Athletic Hall of Famer Elmo Natali, the Vice President of Student Development, who was from the area and knew a lot of the same people in the soccer community, with a proposal of how to start the program on campus. Natali liked what he saw and heard from the ambitious coach and took the proposal before the board which was approved with Laskey being appointed the first head coach in program history. The first couple of seasons, the schedule included a lot of teams that Laskey felt were better than Cal U. His reasoning was that at the beginning of a program, the results are not as important, having the ability to teach and compete against higher-caliber players will do more for long-term success. Over the first two seasons, 1984-85, the Vulcans went 5-24-1, but by 1986-87, teams were not interested in playing Cal U because they feared defeat. In 1986, the Cal U men’s soccer program posted its first winning record, finishing 8-8-3 before going 8-8-2 in 1987 and 10-8-2 in 1988. Since an eight-win campaign in 1997, the Vulcans have reached double-digit victory totals in 11 of 13 seasons. In 2010, the

Vulcans secured their 14th d o u b l e - d i g i t win total by posting an 11-5-2 mark. Aside from a two-year period where he left the University to pursue other opportunities, Laskey has served as the head coach of Cal U men’s soccer from the

beginning. In his 25 years at the helm, the Vulcans have posted a 235-213-35 overall record with one Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament Championship, three PSAC regular-season titles, a PSAC West title and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. There have been some tremendous players that have donned a Vulcan uniform. From 1992-95, Kevin Roadarmel earned three All-PSAC honors and ranks second on the school’s career assists list and 10th on the all-time points list. Roger Gordan played for the Vulcans from 1993-96 and ranks fourth all-time in points, while being fourth in goals and tied for ninth in career assists. In 1998, Cal U Athletic Hall of Famer Omar McPherson posted a then-single-season school record for goals when he tallied 18. He finished his career with 45 goals and ranks sixth on the program’s all-time points list. McPherson’s single-season goals record did not stand for long as fellow Hall of Famer Tomas Boltnar registered a school-record 20 goals in 2000, a mark that still stands today. Boltnar followed up his 20-goal campaign with 19 scores in 2001 and finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in goals (62), assists (56) and points (180). Boltnar ranks first in PSAC history in assists, while holding the top-two single-season assist totals in conference history, and is second in career points. Nicholas Addlery, who went on to play professionally following his Cal U career, played from 1999-02 and is tied for second on the all-

time goals list, sixth on the assists list and his 124 points rank third all-time. Addlery ranked second in points until 2009 when Mike Luecke passed him to finish his career with 125 points. Luecke is tied with Addlery with 52 goals, while posting 21 assists in his four-year career. During the 2010 season, Derek Yobbi, arguably the best goalkeeper in Cal U history, closed the book on his storied Vulcan career. 2010 REVIEWABOUT CAL U

21

On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852.

He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics, Dean of University College, and Director of Planning.

In addition to scholarly publications in scientific journals, Dr. Armenti received the Lindback Foundation Award for

Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirty-two individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and four-year graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media Technology; Physical Therapy Assistant; Sports Management; Graphic Design, Computer Engineering Technology, Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Music Technology and Nursing Administration. Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; winning the Dixon Trophy as well as three National championships (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a second capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibility; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the creation of the University Forum—a new governance structure; adoption of a new general education curriculum; implementation of a $200 million master plan, including: the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building, a 6,000 seat Convocation Center, and six modern new residence halls; the renovation or expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of Global Online, the University’s internet-based outreach to some 2,000 students from around the world. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. In 2001 he became a Certified Covey Trainer on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He is a member of the board of directors of the Washington County Redevelopment Authority, a member of the board of directors of the Greater Pittsburgh council of Boy Scouts of America, and Chair of the Commission of Presidents of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. He is married to the former Barbara Malinowski and, together, they have five grown children and nine grandchildren. His avocations include piano, photography and sailing.

Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan men’s soccer. I am confident that Coach Dennis Laskey, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the men’s soccer tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished in the Top 15 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings for an impressive fourth-consecutive year. During the 2009-10 academic year Cal U’s second place- finish was the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2010-11 academic year, a total of 225 California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Spring 2011 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll after a record 245 student-athletes earned the honor during the Fall 2010 semester. For the 10th-consecutive semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 155 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-11 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as the brand-new Phillipsburg Complex. Men’s soccer and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2011 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.
