The Brevard College softball team enters 2011 looking to build on their 19-26 record last season. Although they lost four seniors to graduation from the 2010 campaigh, head coach Britne Stubbs is

optimistic about the strength and leadership of the squad returning to the diamond this season for Brevard.

Coach Stubbs is returning seven players from the 2010 squad, including two second team All-SAC performers, and the South Atlantic Conference doubles champion from a year ago. Martika Elmore (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Chelsi Mallory (Mechanicsville, Va.) return as in the starting lineup this season. While, seniors Kayla Dorsey (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Sarah Carlos (Eagle River, Alaska) will return for their final seasons wearing the Brevard blue and white.

Elmore will be the Tornados ace in the 2011 campaign. The former Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year threw her first season for the Tornados in 2010. Elmore went 174.2 innings for Brevard and accumulated a 14-14 record on her way to becoming a second team All-SAC selection. Elmore struck out 235 batters in 2010 and looks to continue her dominance as a pitcher for Brevard.

Carlos returns to the team for the Tornados as their everyday first baseman. The senior recorded a .281 batting average with 36 hits in 128 at-bats as a junior. She was able to score 17 runs, while driving in 11 RBIsin last year’s Tornado campaign. Carlos

has been able to flash the leather at first and had a fielding percentage of .973, with six errors in 221 chances.

Kayla Dorsey will return as the Tornados day-to-day second baseman for the 2011 season. Dorsey split time between second base and the outfield last season and recorded a .225 batting average, with 20 hits in 89 at-bats. Dorsey has a solid glove in the field, as she has just six errors in 88 attempts last season.

Chelsi Mallory returns as the field general for the Tornados. Mallory will do the majority of the work behind the plate for Brevard. She led the team with a .383 batting average as a junior, with a team-high 54 hits in 141 at-bats. She also led the South Atlantic Conference with 22 doubles and had one triple and three home runs. She scored 20 runs, while driving in a team-high 24 RBIs. Mallory had a .997 fielding percentage with one error in 364 chances. She will continue as one of the Tornados vocal leaders this season on the field.

Stubbs has a slew of returners on her roster this season, including a pair juniors to lead the Tornados on their 2011 campaign. Becca Curlee (Eagle River, Alaska) and Maddie Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C.) are returning for their third season wearing the blue and white.

Curlee will take over at shortstop this season for the Tornados. Becca can put on a clinic in the infield and will showcase her defensive talents throughout the season as the Tornados shortstop. Curlee will likely hit somewhere in the middle of the lineup as she has good power and con produce from the five or six spot. She recorded a .211 batting average as a sophomore, with 23 hits in 109 at-bats. She hit eight doubles, one triple and one home run, while scoring 18 runs and driving in 12.

Fletcher was a second-team All-SAC selection in the 2010 season and will provide good pop when in the lineup, whether at third or designated player for the Tornados. She had a .275 batting average, with 33 hits in 120 at-bats and scored eight runs, while driving in 20.

Coach Stubbs has just one under classman returning to the 2011 squad from last year. Outfielder Brittany

Jones (Fort Mill, S.C.) is one of two sophomore’s on the team this season.

Jones will be the Tornados everyday leftfielder. She has shown great arm strength in the outfield and speed up the line. The sophomore recorded a .194 batting average with 26 hits in 134 at-bats as a freshman. She had six doubles and one triple and scored nine runs, while driving in 15. She was four of five in stolen base attempts on the season.

Coach Stubbs has a lot of newcomers joining the 2011 team, including five freshmen, a transfer, and a now Brevard College two-sport athlete that will help the Tornados.

Kayla Clemens (Sebring, Fla.) transferred to Brevard College after one season at South Florida Community

College. Clemens will step-in as the Tornados third baseman this season. She will hit in the upper half of the lineup as she is a strong batter with good power and run producing ability.

Brittany Fowler (Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA) comes to Brevard as a freshman who played at Lexington High School. She was a member of the all-region team and an alternate all-state performer. She hit .307 in her senior season at Lexington. She will quickly make a difference for Brevard by taking over the centerfield spot this season. She will also look to make a difference hitting at the top of the lineup.

Meredith Davenport (High Point, N.C.) and Ally Davenport (High Point, N.C.) come to Brevard from Southwest Guilford High School. The twin sisters are speedy outfielders who hit from the left side.

Meredith Davenport was an all-state selection in both her junior and senior seasons at Southwest Guilford High. She was awarded as the team’s best offensive player in her junior season, then followed that by being awarded as her team’s best defensive player the following year. She hit .409 in high school.

Ally Davenport was an all-state selection in 2010. She was also awarded the Offensive Player of the Year award in her senior season, as well as the Florence Gullickson Female Athlete of the Year. She set a new school record by hitting safely in 24 straight games.

Alyssa Miller (Davie, Fla.) is a fresman pitcher that looks to make an immediate impact for the Tornados this season. Miller was a 2010 Florida All-State first team selection, as well as The Herald’s 2010 Pitcher of the Year. She had an earned run average of 1.08, while striking out 161 batters in 123 innings, while sporting a .465 batting average.

Emily Boykin (Chapel Hill, N.C.) is a freshman catcher and utility player for the Tornados. She will provide a rest for Mallory behind the plate when needed. She was named Cedar Ridge High School’s Most Valuable Player as a sophomore.

Chelsea Watson (Seiverville, Tenn.) joins the Tornados this season as a junior. Watson is a standout soccer player for the Tornados and her main role will come off of the bench and utilize her speed on the base paths. She played her high school ball at Gatlinburg-Pittman High School.

The Tornados also recorded their first win against a ranked oppo-nent and their first victory over an NCAA Division I institution during the season.

In 2009, Coach Stubbs oversaw the team as the Tornados made the transition to becoming full members of NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference. The BC softball team went 17-27, 2-14 in confer-ence play and was one of four Tornados teams to make it to the SAC Tournament.

2010 statistics 2009-2010 season in reviewWith a defense paced by a pitcher who led the South Atlantic Conference in strikeouts and a player who led the team in doubles, the Tornados looked to a 2010 season with promise as they looked to repeat their second trip to postseason play.

Brevard finished the season with a 19-26 record, going 5-11 in South Atlantic Conference play to improve on last season’s total by two victories and three SAC wins, tying for sixth overall in theconference, but due to tiebreakers, were left out of the South Atlantic Conference tournament.

The Tornados opened the season on the road on February 10th, taking on Limestone. Brevard fell in the first game of the doubleheader, but rallied back to win game two, 4-1 behind Liz Houser’s first victory of the season. Brevard dropped its next four contests before picking up their second win at home against North Greenville as Martika Elmore had 12 strikeouts, and the Tornados scored three in the fifth to win. Brevard capped off the month of February with a doubleheader sweep of Virginia Intermont as the Tornados took a pair of one-run contests from the Cobras, 2-1 and coming back after being behind 4-0 to win game two, 5-4.

Coach Britne Stubbs team opened up the month of March by splitting a doubleheader with #24-ranked USC Aiken, winning the first game 7-6, before starting the Mid-South Classic held in Spartanburg, S.C. The Tornados captured wins on the first day against Belmont Abbey behind Brittany Jones’ four RBIs and Kayla Dorsey had two hits in the 3-1 victory over North Greenville for the Tornados.

Brevard came out of the Classic with a 9-0 victory over Southern Wesleyan at home, before heading on a eight game road trip that would last until March 27th. On the road, the Tornados swept the Milligan Buffaloes in Johnson City, Tenn., 2-1 and 8-6 and picked up wins over SAC opponents Newberry and Catawba. The Tornados also picked up a victory on March 25th over NCAA Division I opponent Western Carolina, defeating the Catamounts in the first game as Elmore struck out nine and Fletcher and Kristina Clayton each drove in runs.

The Tornados capped off the month of March by run-ruling Tusculum College on the BC Softball field, defeating the visiting Pioneers in the first game of the doubleheader, 9-0, after putting up five runs in the first inning, led by Becca Curlee’s four RBI performance.

Brevard picked up their first win in the month of April on the road in Cleveland, Ga., defeating Thomas University, 5-2, behind Curlee’s first home run of the season.

The Tornados picked up another pair of conference victories at home, defeating Lincoln Memorial in the second game of the doubleheader on April 6th, while topping Wingate in nine innings in the first game on April 10th. In the 5-3 win over the Railsplitters, the Tornados scored all five runs in the second inning capped by a 3 for 3 performance by Clayton. In the 1-0 shutout win over Wingate, Chelsi Mallory hit a walk-off single to give Elmore the victory as the junior pitcher struck out 12 batters in the game while giving up only five hits.

Brevard would fall in their next seven contests, before closing out the regular season with a pair of victories over Truett-McConnell on a wet, rainy afternoon in Brevard. The Tornados took the first game by run-ruling the visiting Bears. Elmore pitched a no-hitter in the contest to go with 10 strikeouts to give Brevard the win. In the second game, the Tornados were led on the mound by Houser as the senior went eight innings, getting the 5-4 victory on Dorsey’s walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth.

Mallory led the Tornados in many of the offensive categories on the season as the sophomore led the team with 54 hits, 22

doubles, tied for the lead with four teammates for triples and was tied with Jennifer Gift for the team lead with three home runs. Mallory also led the team with 24 RBIs and 87 total bases. Clayton was the team leader in runs scored with 26 on the season, while Fletcher was second on the team in RBIs on her way to a Second Team All-SAC selection.

Elmore led the Tornados on the mound throughout the season, finishing with a 14-14 overall record, throwing 21 complete games and four shutouts. Elmore also led the team and the South Atlantic Conference with 235 strikeouts on her way to joining Fletcher on the All-SAC Second Team. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker.

The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions.

In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999).

The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996.

Today the conference is a group of nine private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size

AthleticsBrevard College boasts a distinguished and successful history in intercollegiate athletics, winning nine national team championships as a junior college (1937-2000). During this period, more than 200 Brevard College student athletes received All American honors. After completing the transition to a four-year institution in 2000, the College became an active member of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Over the next eight years, Brevard athletic teams earned 10 conference titles and made 9 national tournament appearances. A new era of Brevard College athletics began in 2006 as the Tornados initiated the transition process from the NAIA to NCAA Division II while also adding football, cycling and cheerleading as varsity sports. Brevard College was officially granted active NCAA Division II and South Atlantic Conference membership status on September 1, 2008. In just two years of eligibility, every single BC Athletic team has either recorded a South Atlantic Conference win or made it to the postseason South Atlantic Conference tournament. The men’s basketball team won Brevard’s first South Atlantic Conference Championship and the Cycling team was named the 2009 Fall Mountain Bike National Champions. Brevard has also seen multiple athletes and coaches receive both All- Conference and All-Region recognition as the Tornados look to establish a pattern of success both in the NCAA and the South Atlantic Conference.

Dr. Drew Van Horn assumed the presidency of Brevard College on September 30, 2002.He is the third president of Brevard College since it became a four-year institution. Since taking the helm, President Van Horn has led collaborative efforts to enhance Brevard College’s commitment to engage and educate its students in the theoretical and applied liberal arts.

Under President Van Horn’s leadership, the institution continues to challenge students to integrate knowledge and practical experience so that they can become competent, confident and responsible citizens, serving their local and global communities. To that end, Brevard College offers varied programs and opportunities to its students that form the foundation for pursuing further formal study, meaningful vocations and life-long personal and professional development.

In 2004, President Van Horn led one of the most ambitious capital campaigns in Brevard College’s history. By the conclusion of the campaign in May 2006, the College exceeded its $14 million target by more than $5 million. Funds raised from the campaign were used to provide significant student scholarships; increase the College’s endowment; enhance student enrollment and retention efforts; and renovate many of the College’s facilities, including residence halls and classrooms.

During his tenure, Brevard College has also added new academic programs, including psychology, criminal justice and teacher education licensure.

The College also moved from the NAIA to NCAA Division II and added football, cycling and cheerleading as varsity sports.

Most recently, President Van Horn initiated a five-year strategic plan for the College that encourages meaningful service; promotes student engagement; models environmental stewardship; strengthens financial resources; expands employee support; and enhances campus infrastructure. Campus-wide efforts on those six commitments are ongoing.
