The Jewish Community Center of Staten Island plays many roles in the lives of its thousands ofculturally diverse members. For some, it is where they bring their very young children to begin toexperience the excitement of learning while being surrounded by warm and nurturing educators. Forothers, it is where they went to camp and where they now want their children to learn to swim andhave fun in all kinds of ways while having the support of a well trained staff that will bring out thebest in each and every child. Others see the JCC as their place to stay or get fit while feeling both chal-lenged and comfortable whether in group exercise classes, with a personal trainer or swimming lapsin the indoor or outdoor pools. Our afterschool program is seen as a cool place to come in the after-noon where you have fun and learn even more, play sports, have help with homework and hang outwith friends under the watchful eye of engaging counselors. Others see it as the place where they learnto play and experience music, hear interesting guest speakers, see small-release films, and for someit’s a great place to meet friends, learn about computers and have a snack in the café. And in thesedifficult economic times, some see the JCC as the best place to turn for compassionate and professionaladvice in dealing with job searches, emotional and financial stress caused by longterm unemployment, the legal issues surrounding foreclosures and so much more, all provided by a generous grant fromUJA-Federation of New York’s Connect-to-Care program. There is another side to the JCC that is seen by thousands of non-member Staten Islanders every

year…the side that provides social services throughout our borough to those who need a helpinghand whether with food for their table or education for their child who dropped out of high schoolor health insurance for their family or an afterschool program that is safe and secure as well as stim-ulating and exciting. In this Annual Report we invite you to learn primarily about those aspects ofthe JCC that improve the lives of children and adults, individuals and families, in ways and placesthat are less apparent. You will discover that the JCC is as likely to provide services to the communityin a school, a church, a synagogue as it is to offer them in its own buildings. In fact, the JCC is situatedin more than thirty different locations, insuring that it brings its expertise and services to locationsthat are convenient to those who need them. The JCC is also now recognized as a ‘town center’ for Staten Island, hosting numerous public events

like a town hall, lectures and workshops for community organizations, and community programslike the Reel Abilities Film Festival every year. The JCC is extremely fortunate to have the combined talent, energy and vision of a dedicated Board, volunteers and staff and the generous support of individuals, foundations and elected officials. Wededicate this Annual Report to each of these essential partners in the success of the JCC as it worksto support the people and diverse communities of Staten Island.
