Audrey Ring, Board Chair

Dear Friends of Women In Distress,

Over the past year, the new Jim and Jan Moran Family Center has come to life. Today, we can proudly say “we are home!”

Our agency footprint has expanded with the new campus doubling our capacity to deliver services to individuals and families affected by domestic violence.

As we look back on this remarkable year, there is much to celebrate and many to thank.

Leading that list is philanthropist and advocate for children, Jan Moran. Her personal pledge in matching funds through the Moran Challenge Grant spurred us to raise nearly $2 million over an 18-month period and receive a personal gift totaling $665,000 toward the campaign and completion of the new Moran Family Center campus.

Nearly 500 individuals, families, foundations and businesses to date have contributed a total of $4.2 million to our campaign – exceptional in challenging economic times particularly as half of these donors were new to Women In Distress.

Starting with the honor of receiving the “Outstanding Non-Profit Organization of the Year” award at the BankAtlantic Non-Profit Academy Awards presented by 2-1-1 Broward and culminating with the move to our new Jim and Jan Moran Family Center, we celebrate these successes because of you – our community, friends and supporters.

Last year, our agency provided 19,246 nights of emergency shelter to more than 380 women and children. More than 2,850 individuals received 24,476 hours of counseling and therapy. Through our Social Change and AmeriCorps program, now in its fifth year, we reached more than 70,000 people with messages of prevention and education about domestic violence.

Special thanks to Holy Cross Hospital and the Sisters of Mercy who provided space that we used as an interim location for our offices, outreach and counseling while the new Moran Family Center campus was being completed.

Other visionaries who champion keeping families safe and help Women In Distress fulfill our mission are our many community partners such as Janet A. Boyle, through her endowment fund at the Community Foundation of Broward, Sheriff Al Lamberti and the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), and law enforcement partners throughout Broward County, United Way, Broward County Human Services, the Children’s Services Council of Broward, Florida Volunteer, the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence (FCADV), and the Department of Children and Families (DCF).

We are proud to celebrate with you our new, expanded Jim and Jan Moran Family Center – a place of peace, a place of hope, a place to start.

Keeping families safe is a top priority for Women In Distress, as we strive to fulfill our mission to stop domestic violence abuse for everyone. Continuously working towards that goal, we are committed to providing the highest level of free, confidential quality programs and services to help families affected by domestic violence.

EMERGENCY SHELTER

Last year, Women In Distress provided 19,246 nights of emergency shelter to more than 380 victims of domestic violence and their children. These families were given a safe environment and provided with supportive services, creating positive change as they work towards a safe and self-sufficient life.

24-HOUR CRISIS LINE

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the crisis line provides information about domestic violence services and additional community resources. Our trained advocates and volunteers answered 4,339 calls for help last year from victims of domestic violence, as well as community members seeking sources of information and support including referrals and other appropriate outside services.

OUTREACH SERVICES

Last year, 2,889 women, children, and men received critical outreach services including counseling, case management, therapy and advocacy to help them attain an independent, violence-free life. Services are offered at the Jim and Jan Moran Family Center, as well as at satellite locations throughout Broward County.

CHILDREN’S SERVICES

The Children’s Program provides a nurturing and supportive environment for children who have been affected by domestic violence. A variety of services are offered including respite care, family counseling, individual counseling, and support groups for children and adolescents. Last year, over 1,000 children received such services, helping them explore their feelings and begin to heal.

EDUCATION & AWARENESS

Last year, more than 70,000 people were educated with messages of prevention through educational programs in schools, community groups, faith-based organizations, men and boys groups,

multicultural groups and more. In fulfilling our mission, our effort for a community free of domestic violence abuse is spearheaded by our Social Change Department and AmeriCorps Program, which consists of 18 full-time members.

THRIFT STORE

The Women In Distress Thrift Store, located in Margate, provided clothing, furniture and household items free of charge to our families at Women In Distress, helping them rebuild their lives. In addition, it also generated revenue through sales from the general public to support the programs and services offered at Women In Distress.

INVESTING IN OUR MISSION

As Broward County’s only nationally accredited, state-certified domestic violence center, Women In Distress (WID) provides all services and programs at no cost to the families we serve. Recognizing the importance of ensuring organizational sustainability while providing the highest level of quality services, we are continuously striving towards excellence with program capacity, fundraising, and stakeholder satisfaction.

With the agency’s expansion and ability to provide more families with our services, funding is more important than ever. WID is proud to have received funding from the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence (FCADV), Department of Children and Families (DCF), Victims of Crime Act (VOCA), Volunteer Florida, Children’s Services Council, Broward County and United Way, individuals, municipalities and private and corporate foundations. WID also raised additional funds from the community through annual special events, fundraising initiatives, the Women In Distress Thrift Store and other support.

Charity Navigator, a company known for evaluating financially responsible 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations, has awarded Women In Distress a coveted 4-star rating for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency. Such high marks indicate that Women In Distress adheres to high standards and consistently executes our mission in a fiscally responsible way. According to Charity Navigator, Women In Distress outperformed most other charities in America and the “exceptional” designation from Charity Navigator demonstrates our level of credibility.

In further demonstrating our standing, Women In Distress has been accredited by The Council on Accreditation (COA) since 2002, verifying that our agency consistently operates with integrity, credibility and the utmost level of quality. Entering this new chapter in the history of our agency, we celebrate our 10th year as a nationally accredited agency with outstanding financial accolades from Charity Navigator.

“I thank Women In Distress for being there for me. It has made such an impact on my life. Thank you sincerely.”

WORKING TOGETHER TO KEEP FAMILIES SAFE

Women In Distress believes that good leadership is a driving force behind our success of keeping families safe. Working together with leaders in our community, we are strengthening our ability to serve families affected by domestic violence and engaging the community in our mission.

Special thanks to our Board of Directors and Trustees, volunteers, supporters, corporate partners, donors, foundations, community partners, and staff who all work together to help keep families safe.

Thank you to our supporters of the Hal Herman Children’s Fund, helping the littlest victims of domestic violence receive services at Women In Distress and Donnah’s Fund founded by Sara Jane and Ira Drescher, enabling those affected by domestic violence to live safely and independently in memory of Donnah Winger, who lost her life because of domestic violence.

CELEBRATING THE NEW JIM & JAN MORAN FAMILY CENTER

PROJECT SAFE PLACE

It started with an increased need for shelter space, and with a dedicated board and a community passionate about the families who live there, it became a vision for the future. The vision was to provide more families affected by domestic violence with shelter, supportive services and a safe place to rebuild their lives. Turning this vision into a reality began in 2008 with the purchase of a 6.4 acre site with five buildings in Deerfield Beach and the initiation of Project SAFE Place Capital Campaign.

This past year has truly been monumental in the 36 year history of our agency. We expanded our operations, doubling the capacity to provide services and offer greater safety to more families in need. The new Jim and Jan Moran Family Center has increased shelter capacity from 62 to 100 emergency shelter beds, with room to grow to provide as many as 132 beds in the future. Outreach and counseling services have also expanded in order to meet the increased number of families we are now able to serve. In addition, the new campus offers special enhancements such as a dental clinic, family therapy room, Broward Sheriff’s Office substation, shelter for teen boys and a new pet shelter planned for the future. Our new Moran Family Center is an amazing place – a place of promise, a place of peace, a place to start.

We invite you to celebrate in our success achieved over the past year – success that was only made possible with the support from so many of you, our Capital Campaign donors and 100 Men Initiative members, as well as our annual donors, community partners, funders, volunteers, supporters and friends. Thank you for your continuous support in helping our community and for believing in our mission to stop domestic violence abuse for everyone.

MORAN CHALLENGE GRANT

In 2009, Jan Moran, philanthropist and advocate for issues affecting children

and families, created a special Moran Challenge Grant to personally assist with the Project SAFE Place expansion campaign for the new Jim and Jan Moran Family Center campus. She continued to inspire support when she not only extended the deadline, but also doubled the potential matching dollars through the Moran Challenge.

Jan Moran’s leadership has truly helped to make the dream of assisting more families affected by domestic violence a reality. The Moran Challenge was significant in encouraging others to give, raising more than $1.9 million and an additional $665,062 in matching funds. We are so grateful for Jan Moran’s dedication and extreme generosity in the campaign.

“My husband often said, ‘the future belongs to those who prepare for it,’” said Jan Moran. “Through the Jim and Jan Moran Family Center, victims of domestic violence have a safe place to heal and the comprehensive resources they need to begin rebuilding their lives and their futures.”

GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION

In Spring 2011, Women In Distress opened its doors of the new Jim and Jan Moran Family Center to community members and the families at Women In Distress in celebration of the newly completed campus and the ability to double the amount of families being served. It was a significant coming together of our community to bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence and to the important need to help keep families safe.

For the first time, our families were able to see their new home – a place where they can rest, receive services, bring their children - a place where they can rebuild their lives.

The opening was indeed commemorative because of the hard work and tireless efforts put forth by our community. On behalf of our families, thank you for your help in this cause for celebration!

5th ANNUAL STARFISH LUNCHEON PRESENTED BY WELLS FARGO

Co-Chaired by Gale Butler and Jen Klaassens, this past year’s Starfish Luncheon Presented by Wells Fargo took place on May 18, 2011. With over 500 corporate leaders and business professionals in attendance to honor and show appreciation for those who are dedicated to changing the lives of domestic violence victims in Broward County, the luncheon raised valuable funds for WID programs and services.

Those special honorees included Sr. Rita Levasseur/Sisters of Mercy/Holy Cross Hospital, Sheriff Al Lamberti and the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Publix Super Markets, Inc. and one of our very own participants.

WOMEN IN DISTRESS AUXILIARY (WIDA)

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, WIDA hosted “A Night In Monte Carlo” Gala on October 1, 2010 in support of Women In Distress. The evening honored longtime supporter and board member Arlene Pecora and her commitment to Women In Distress.
