J. David Gilbert2012 President

Fellow Eagles,Now more than ever, every single one of us

should be proud to be an Eagle Scout. 2012 celebratesthe 100th anniversary of the first Eagle and since thenover 2,000,000 Scouts have attained this rank.

This is also an excellent time to be involved withthe Eagle Scout Association. After many hours ofbrainstorming and discussion we are adjusting ourprogram to offer more informal networkingopportunities and social events while continuing theservice we provide to local Scouts and the Greater St.Louis Area Council, B. S. A. We are redefining our imagein order to develop a unique identity that highlightswhat our association is all about: Advancement, Serviceand Camaraderie.

I’d like to thank those of you who have takenadvantage of the many opportunities E.S.A. offers eachyear. We continue to serve youth through ourscholarships programs, Merit Badge Make-Up Day, andmultiple camp service projects each year. We encouragebrotherhood through an annual BBQ, the winter holidayluncheon, a trivia night, and a golf tournament. Forthose of you who have never attended these events, Ihighly encourage you join in the adventure and havesome fun with your fellow Scouters.

MeritBadge Make-Up Day provides a chance for BoyScouts to complete partial merit badges fromsummer camp. Eagle Scout Association: The Story of its Founding

16

At the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Eagle Scout Association, the Chairman of the meeting said, “The Eagle Scout Association....was founded by a group of men.” He continued and said, “Apparently the history of the founding has been lost or become dim.”

To set the record straight, here is the history of the founding.

In the spring of 1947, while my father was President of the Saint Louis Council, heheard about the way the Kansas City Council honored its Eagle Scouts in one greatceremony at the Kansas City Municipal Auditorium. He expressed interest in this eventand invited Jack Keith (then the St. Louis Council Executive) Charles Mills, Carl Lemley(both members of the St. Louis Headquarters) my brother Lewis C. Vollmar, and myself toaccompany him to Kansas City and witness the ceremony. The event was very impressiveand all Eagle Scouts were honored at this “Court of Honor.”

En route home father mentioned that it seemed to him that if the St. Louis Councilcould compile all of the St. Louis Eagle Scouts into an organization, it would be a “powerfulforce for scouting.”

Approximately a week later he invited Tom Curtis, Albert Cunliff, the St. Louis ScoutExecutive Jack Keith and myself to a luncheon at the Noonday Club for the purpose offorming and organizing the “Eagle Scout Association.”

All present thought it was an excellent idea and the vote for organizing the “Eagle ScoutAssociation of St. Louis” was unanimous.

Albert Cunliff, a lawer, was elected president because he had volunteered to write theorganization’s by-laws. The names of the other officers who were elected perhaps may berecorded in the minutes of that meeting.

Those of us attending the meeting recruited several or more Eagle Scouts who agreedto join and the first membership meeting was held several months later with about 30 to 40Eagle Scouts in attendance. That is how the Eagle Scout Association was formed.

Respectfully submitted,

Joseph E. Vollmar, Jr. May 21, 1998
