Gary K. WildePresident & CEO, Community Memorial Health System

A After the Civil War, Ventura County’s first American physician undertook the mission to personally address the growing need for professional healthcare for the residents of his town. After two years of planning and construction, he and his brother, opened the county’s first hospital – a two story, 12-bed facility, that cared for everyone from newborns to the elderly. That small, private hospital of 1902 has become the largest community-owned healthcare system in the county today, impacting lives throughout Ventura County and beyond. We have had a history of caring in our community for over a century, and this past year was no exception. We are pleased to report that 2011 was an outstanding year for Community Memorial Health System. Many of our programs – Maternal Child Health, Surgical Care, Medical Care, and Nursing are being recognized nationally. We’re very pleased that year after year the National Research Corporation does an unsolicited survey of our community and we’ve received the Consumer Choice Award since 2003. CMH also receives the title of Ventura County Star Favorite Hospital of Western Ventura County year after year. Patient feedback is perhaps, the greatest indication of how our community health system is performing. According to patient surveys, scores given for a patient’s “willingness to recommend” Community Memorial Hospital and Ojai Valley Community Hospital not only beat our previous year’s scores, but also exceeded both the state and national averages – a testament of our commitment to patient satisfaction. We believe that in order to continue providing the highest quality of care in our community, it is vital that we keep pace with the ever-growing population. As a health system, we continued our growth last year, with the inclusion of the tenth and eleventh Centers for Family Health in Ojai and Port Hueneme, as well as the expansion of the Keeler Center for Headache & Orofacial Pain. The Centers for Family Health see approximately 250,000 patients per year, and the Keeler Center conveniently brings headache and orofacial pain specialty care to the Ojai Valley’s doorstep. 2011 also signifies a milestone for the new Community Memorial Hospital. Groundbreaking of the new building was held in September of last year, and so marks the physical beginning of our commitment to providing a healthier tomorrow. This is not just a building we are building – it impacts all of us. We are striving to do our very best to provide world class care in our community. As the only independent, not-for-profit health system in the county, we feel that there is an advantage where we do not have corporate overhead we do not have any money leaving our community. Instead, it gets reapplied to purchase equipment and provide services, reinforcing our dedication to promoting excellence. As we move forward, we will continue to provide the highest quality services in our ongoing quest to improve the health of our community.
