The Sigma Chi Foundation promotes excellence in the programs we fund. our grant review process ensures accountability and clear linkage from the donor’s expectations to the program’s delivery. our grant process requires grant applications to clearly state program objectives, list expectations with delineated metrics, name responsible parties and provide detailed budgets. our Grant Committee reviews each application, interviews program stakeholders, negotiates enhancements to expectations and tracks progress throughout the grant-funding year.

Sigma Chi impacts young men to become leaders imbued with worthy ideals and attributes. We instill our core values in our young brothers through our values-based leadership training programs and encourage their academic pursuits through scholarship support. Our efforts fortify them to face a world that all too often rewards doing the wrong thing, or taking the easy way out. It is undeniable that there is a great need for leaders of good character. It is as true now as it was when Founder William Lewis Lockwood said in 1857, “The world needs just such men.”

I am proud to serve your Foundation as Chairman. It is humbling to follow in the footsteps of brother Chuck Watson, oklahoma State 1972, who served as Chairman over the past five years. In recognition of his outstanding leadership, this summer the Foundation announced the Kim and Chuck Watson scholarship to be given in perpetuity to the highest ranking General Academic Scholarship winner. We also announced the nancy and John Peterson Academic Scholarship to honor John’s devoted service. both honors are intended to recognize the past Chairmen who helped to build this strong Foundation.

Brothers, your donations, volunteer efforts and advocacy on behalf of our leadership programs and scholarships made fiscal year 2010-11 a very good year for the Sigma Chi Foundation. We were able to meet all of our grant commitments, expand scholarships, expand programs and set aside some funds to continue to build our endowment. The end result was we reached more of our undergraduate brothers through increased leadership and scholarship opportunities. As you will see from the testimonials in this report, our young brothers are grateful for your support and look forward to giving back when they become alumni. I too, am very grateful for your generosity.

We have maintained and invested in our Peterson International Headquarters building and museum

We continue to reach out to alumni to seek their engagement and support:

• 20 alumni participated in the highly successful Distinguished Visitor programs at Horizons and blTW.

Newly Created Strong Arms Scholarship

• The “Strong Arms” scholarship fund aides undergraduates who have suffered catastrophic personal tragedies (tornadoes, floods, etc.).

The Donor-Scholars Program

An alumnus can endow an annual $1,000 named scholarship with a $25,000 gift. Donors are encouraged to provide biographical and contact information to facilitate a mentorship opportunity with the recipient. Timothy A. MichaelOhio State, 1970Chairman

Brother Michael is Chairman of the Foundation Board of Governors. He is the principal of Michael Freres & Associates, Inc., a private investment company that invests in companies in early stage development. His background includes service as an officer in the U.S. Navy; 15 years of experience in the investment banking industry; and CEO of two companies that were sold to publicly owned companies.

Brother Michael joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 2006. He is a Significant Sig.

Edward W. BlessingSan Diego State, 1960 Vice Chairman

Brother Blessing is the Managing Director of Blessing Petroleum Group, LLC, founded in 1989 to serve as a financial advisor to the energy industry. Additionally, he currently serves as an Independent Director of NGP Capital Resources Company (NGPC).

Brother Blessing joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 2008. He is a Significant Sig.

John A. Clerico Oklahoma State, 1963 Treasurer

Brother Clerico is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Global Industries, Ltd. He has been a member of the Company’s Board since February 2006 and is the Chairman of Chartmark Investments, Inc., a company he founded in 2001.

Brother Clerico joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 2008 and serves as treasurer. He is a Significant Sig.

robert D. Basham Maryland, 1970

Brother Basham is Vice Chairman of Outback Steakhouse. A graduate of the University of Maryland, he started out in a family-run restaurant business and, in 1973, joined the management program of the Steak & Ale Restaurant Company. He ultimately became vice president of operations of the Bennigan’s Concept and was instrumental in its successful nationwide expansion. In 1983, Brother Basham and Chris Sullivan established Sunstate Restaurant Corporation to develop the Chili’s Concept as a franchisee and joint venture partner in Georgia and Florida. The company merged with Chili’s, Inc. in 1987, and Brother Basham continued in his operations position until departing to cofound Outback Steakhouse.

Brother Basham joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 2011. He is a Significant Sig.

John G. Berylson Brown, 1975

Brother Berylson is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Chestnut Hill Ventures LLC. Prior to Chestnut Hill Ventures, he was the President of GCC Investments, LLC, a subsidiary of GC Companies, Inc. Brother Berylson has served on the boards of numerous private and public companies, including Millwall Holdings, plc; ACA Capital Holdings, Inc.; MotherNature. Com, Inc.; GrandVision SA; PrimaCom AG and Youngworld Stores Group, Inc.

Brother Berylson joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 2009.

Lee A. Beauchamp Texas A&M-College Station, 1975

Brother Beauchamp served as 63rd Grand Consul of Sigma Chi Fraternity from 2003 through 2005.

He retired as President of Ada Resources, Inc. after 34 years with the company. Ada is the petroleum marketing subsidiary of Adams Resources & Energy, Inc.

Brother Beauchamp joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 2008. He is a Significant Sig and an Order of Constantine Sig.

Matthew r. Bradshaw Florida, 1999

Brother Bradshaw is Vice President and co-portfolio manager at Millennium Partner’s Green Arrow fund. Brother Bradshaw is also a Partner at Durational Capital, a start-up private equity fund focused on emerging market opportunities. He is the current President of the New York Alumni Chapter of Sigma Chi.

Brother Bradshaw joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 2009.

Thomas E. “Tommy” Bronson Tennessee-Knoxville, 1958

Brother Bronson is the retired President of Meridian Business Group, Martin Marietta Materials. He has previously served as Chairman, CEO, Meridian Aggregates Company; Chairman, President and CEO of Ideal Basic Industries and President, Moore McCormack Cement, Inc., and CEO of Florida Mining and Materials Corp.

Brother Bronson joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 2005. He is a Significant Sig.

richard J. Campo Oregon State, 1976

Brother Campo is Chairman of the Board of Trust Managers and Chief Executive Officer of Camden Property Trust. He also serves on numerous charitable, community and real estate industry boards.

Brother Campo joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 2006. He is a Significant Sig.

Stephen W. Goodroe Georgia, 1971

Brother Goodroe is an Executive-in-Residence in the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. After graduating from UGA (Delta) in 1971, Goodroe joined Procter and Gamble where he spent 30 years in a variety of roles in North America, Europe, and Asia. He retired in 2001 as Vice President - Global Customer Marketing.

After retiring from P&G, he led the successful start-up of dunnhumby USA, a joint venture between The Kroger Company and a London-based marketing services company, serving as the first CEO.

Brother Goodroe taught a marketing strategy course in the Executive MBA program at UGA and served on the Alumni Board of Terry College. He is currently a member of the Emeritus Board.

Brother Goodroe joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 2009. He is a Significant Sig.


Samuel B. Haskell, III Mississippi, 1977

Sam Haskell is the former Executive Vice President and Worldwide Head of Television for the venerable William Morris Agency. In 2007, TV Week named him one of the 25 Most Innovative and Influential People in Television over the last quarter century. He authored the autobiographical memoir with life lessons, the National Bestseller, Promises I Made My Mother.

During his 27 year career at William Morris his clients included Bill Cosby, George Clooney, Ray Romano, Dolly Parton, Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Danza, Kirstie Alley, Michael Feinstein, and His Royal Highness The Prince Edward. He also packaged such hit network series as The Cosby Show, Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, Everybody Loves Raymond, Sisters, Diagnosis Murder, Mad About you, Regis and Kathie Lee, and Lost!

Brother Haskell joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 2010. He is a Significant Sig.

robert E. Joseph Willamette, 1957

Brother Joseph joined the law firm of Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt in 1965, and developed a national reputation for his knowledge and understanding of insurance regulations. In 1988, Brother Joseph helped organize Sigma Chi’s Risk Management Foundation and served as Chair for 10 years. He served as 56th Grand Consul of Sigma Chi Fraternity from 1989 through 1991, and is currently the Foundation Board of Governors Parliamentarian.

Brother Joseph joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 2002. He is a Significant Sig and an Order of Constantine Sig.

Keith Krach Purdue, 1979

Brother Krach served as 64th Grand Consul of Sigma Chi Fraternity from 2005 through 2007. He currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of 3Points LLC. He is also the Chairman of the Board at DocuSign,

Chairman of the Board at Angie’s List and Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Purdue University. Brother Krach is the founder and former chairman and CEO of Ariba Inc. At the age of 26, Keith was the youngest vice president in General Motors’ history and led GM’s robotics operations. He was Ernst & Young’s National Entrepreneur of the Year in 2000, and was honored at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, with the Technology Pioneer Award.

Brother Krach joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 2010. He is a Significant Sig and an Order of Constantine Sig. He is the 1979 International Balfour Award Winner and former Chairman of the Leadership Training Board.

D. Kerry McCluggage Southern California, 1976

Brother McCluggage formerly served as Chairman of the Paramount Television Group and President of Universal Television. He is currently an investor in media related companies including Trifecta Entertainment, Peace Arch Entertainment and Content Media where he is a board director. Brother McCluggage is also the Lead Independent

Director of American Reprographics, Inc. (NYSE) and is President of his own production company, Craftsman Films.

Brother McCluggage joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 2008. He is a Significant Sig and an Order of Constantine Sig.

John D. Peterson Indiana, 1955

Brother Peterson is Chairman of the Board of City Securities Corporation. He served as Chairman of the Foundation Board of Governors from 1992 to 2006.

Brother Peterson joined the Foundation Board in 1987. He is a Significant Sig and an Order of Constantine Sig.

Scott Sperling Purdue University 1979

Brother Sperling is Co-President of Thomas H. Lee Partners. His current and prior directorships include Clear Channel Communications, Hawkeye

Holdings, Thermo Fisher Corp., Univision Communications, Inc., Warner Music Group, Experian Information Solutions, Fisher Scientific, Front Line Management Companies, Inc., Houghton Mifflin Co., The Learning Company, LiveWire, LLC, PriCellular Corp., ProcureNet, ProSiebenSat.1, Tibbar, LLC, Wyndham Hotels and several other private companies.

Prior to joining Thomas H. Lee Partners, Brother Sperling was Managing Partner of The Aeneas Group, Inc., the private capital affiliate of Harvard Management Company, for more than ten years. Before that he was a senior consultant with the Boston Consulting Group.

robert F. Sweeney Colorado State, 1959

Brother Sweeney is a former Mayor of Craig, Colorado. Currently, he is President of the Kenneth King Foundation in Denver. Along with his wife Gerri, he also publishes numerous community newspapers.

Brother Sweeney joined the Foundation Board of Governors in 1995. He is a Significant Sig.

Brother Watson is the Chairman of CLW Investments, Inc., and Wincrest Ventures, Inc. He is the co-founder of Eagle Energy Partners. He is a minority owner of the Houston Texans. Brother Watson served as Chairman of the Foundation Board of Governors from 2006 to 2011.

SUSTAiNABLE GroWTH Financial Commentary: Fiscal Year 2010-11

Thanks to strong donor support and effective stewardship, the Sigma Chi Foundation met every leadership grant commitment, expanded our academic scholarships, and achieved a positive bottom line for five consecutive years.

The Foundation continues to work hard to control discretionary expenses, which are down more than 21% over the last five years. We have also explored our development efforts, growing our revenue to pre-recession levels. In close partnership with Sigma Chi Fraternity leadership, program efficiency has been enhanced. As a result, your Foundation is positioned for sustainable, conservative growth as we look to the future.

Cash-Based Performance

The Foundation manages its budget based only on known cash revenue and cash expenses. Very conservative budget management and an increase in charitable giving, including a bequest from the estate of Past Grand Consul James Bash, helped the Foundation achieve a 10.2% revenue surplus, which was primarily directed to grow the unrestricted endowment. The Foundation granted $1,600,000 in support of leadership programs, $150,000 to fund unrestricted general and alumni academic scholarships, and an additional $345,000 to fund chapter-restricted academic scholarships.

Thanks to growing donor support, aggressive spending controls, conservative budgeting assumptions, reduced dependence on outsourced vendors, and paying strict attention to the bottom line, the Foundation is on a sustainable growth path.

We also maintain accrual basis financial records, which reflect unrealized gain or loss on investments, the present day value of pledges upon the date of commitment, depreciation, and other non-cash items. legacy Professionals, llP, conducted the Foundation’s certified audit. Investment Performance

Under the direction of the Foundation board of Governors Investment Committee, bank of America served as manager of the Foundation’s investment portfolio in fiscal year 2010-11. We routinely review our asset allocation policy. our investment priorities are to preserve corpus, conservatively produce

income, and grow at a rate exceeding inflation. In response to changing market conditions, the Foundation adopted a revised investment policy statement and asset allocation in october 2010.

The Foundation’s investment portfolio returned a positive 25.28% (not inclusive of unrealized gains/losses) in fiscal year 2010-11. The benchmark was 25.18%.


Endowment and Chapter Specific Funds

The Foundation has established policies governing endowment and chapter-specific funds consistent with applicable law. We account for endowment assets in separate funds based on fund purpose and donor-imposed restrictions. The Foundation seeks to preserve the corpus and utilize only earnings of all endowment funds (as defined in its Policy for Fund Maintenance and Acceptance of

The Foundation annually adopts a spending policy to set the annual distribution rate from endowment funds. During fiscal year 2010-11, the spending policy was 4% of an endowment fund’s average corpus for the preceding 12 quarters (ended June 30, 2010).

Developing Stronger Alumni and Undergratuate Leaders

Balfour Leadership Training Workshop (BLTW) is the world’s largest and most successful annual Greek leadership conference. It is a central element of an integrated, comprehensive leadership development strategy for Sigma Chi in conjunction with Horizons, Cornerstone, and in the near future, the Journey chapter retreat program.

BLTW is the primary annual training program for undergraduate and alumni chapter officers.

BLTW broke attendance records for the third straight year with 1,780 participants. Brothers from across Sigma Chi received values-based leadership training and office-specific skills. Attendees were exposed to new ideas from Sigma Chi groups across North America and left BLTW with a clear plan of action for the coming year. It is a shining example of Sigma Chi brothers—from the newest to the most seasoned—engaging for the good of all.

Objectives of BLTW

• Learn to become better leaders through training in the core elements of each office, as well as special leadership strategies and techniques.

• Create a system of accountability for improving a chapter throughout the academic year.

• Develop a chapter strategic plan.

• Understand resources available.

• Weave Sigma Chi values into officer roles and daily lives.

• Enhance new relationships with peers.

HoRIzonS Alumni Teaching Undergraduates Values-Based Leadership Lessons

Horizons is a proven individual leadership training program created to give undergraduate brothers who desire to be strong leaders the tools and confidence to succeed. Professionally-trained alumni facilitators guide our undergraduate brothers through the challenging leadership experience.

The interactive nature of Horizons makes it a truly unique and special experience. The curriculum takes full advantage of the outdoor resources of the site in Snowbird, UT. During the six-day sessions undergraduates are immersed in experiential learning that engages their minds and bodies, pushing them to think and act differently. Horizons provides values-based knowledge and skills that they will utilize throughout their college careers and their lives. Sigma Chi, college campuses, communities, their families and the world will reap the rewards of trained, engaged, supportive and empowered leaders.

The program’s growth over the last few years has been extraordinary with four sessions now achieved for the price of three. The Foundation’s vision is to have at least two undergraduates from every chapter attend every year.

Objectives of Horizons

• Provide Sigma Chi Undergraduates with the highest level of leadership training to impact our chapters, host institutions and the world.

CoRneRSTone Mentors are Catalysts for Change

The Cornerstone Mentor Program provides a comprehensive learning and motivational experience for undergraduates and alumni alike. Its mission is to create a positive culture within each chapter to promote leadership, academic achievement and ensure alignment with the principals and ideals of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Undergraduates benefit greatly from the presence of dedicated, engaged alumni who are committed to providing the support, guidance and specific educational programming to our undergraduate brothers. Mentors gain as much as they give and learn as much as they teach.

The Cornerstone Mentor program provides professional training to our alumni volunteers with the aim of placing one or more Mentors at every undergraduate chapter. Cornerstone Mentor training focuses on Sigma Chi’s rich history and values, understanding self and others, building personal relationships and trust, facilitation, feedback, intervention skills and values-based leadership.

With your continued support, Cornerstone has the potential to touch the lives of every undergraduate member of our Fraternity. It has already served to reconnect over 400 alumni in their roles as mentors. Cornerstone inspires our members to live the values of Sigma Chi in their daily lives. Objectives of Cornerstone

• Strengthen the agent of change role; affect the culture of our organization by focusing on supporting, nurturing and educating through facilitated curriculum and additional experiential learning tools.

• Deliver relevant educational programming to the chapter to address its unique needs

• Provide ongoing multidimensional training to Mentors.

JoUrNEyChapter Retreat Pilot Program: To Reach Every Chapter Every Year

The Journey Chapter Retreat Program is one of four key leadership programs offered by Sigma Chi. When fully deployed, Journey will integrate core teachings and instructional techniques from Horizons and the Balfour Leadership Training Workshop. The program will reach every undergraduate every year, empower them to address the relevant issues at their chapters, reinforce the essential expectations of Sigma Chi values and elevate their expectations of themselves and their chapter as a whole.

Each session of Journey provides the entire chapter membership with an opportunity to learn leadership skills. Within the overall framework of values-based leadership, the program integrates key topics, such as alcohol and drug education, social styles, and strategic planning. Each session concludes with the creation of a chapter-wide action plan to implement the concepts and improve the overall chapter experience.

A team of local Cornerstone Mentors and the Chapter Advisor deliver each retreat. They employ a range of instructional approaches to ensure the program meets the needs of all learning styles. Instructors are provided comprehensive curriculum and facilitator guides, training in the effective delivery and facilitation of course content, and a plan for post session follow-up.

CHoICeS Alumni Educating Undergraduates to Battle Alcohol Use and Abuse, Prescription and Recreational Drug Abuse, Suicide and Depression

In partnership with the world-renowned Betty Ford Center, Sigma Chi trains and deploys alumni to help battle critical issues facing our undergraduate brothers. CHOICES addresses substance abuse, and will soon incorporate suicide and depression education. The CHOICES program was developed specifically for our undergraduate Sigma Chi brothers.

Trained alumni lead the workshop-style course. In addition to learning the risks and warning signs, undergraduates are taught how to monitor their own and others’ actions in a safe and accountable environment.

This past year, the CHOICES program was presented to over 50 Chapters, including several Province Conferences, reaching 2,131 Undergraduates. Several of the presentations were to the entire Greek community on campus. The Sigma Chi/Betty Ford Alliance also received the North American Interfraternity Conference Laurel Wreath Award—in recognition of the unique program, its community outreach, and influence within the fraternal world.

THe HISToRICAl InITIATIVePreserving the Legacy of Brotherhood

The Historical Initiative exists to preserve our past, provide resources to demonstrate the impact of our Brotherhood on society, and serve as a clearinghouse for our historical items. In recent years, the initiative has catalogued our founding materials, The Magazine of Sigma Chi, Grand Council collection and many other artifacts.

The Sigma Chi Historical Initiative also acts as the nexus point for implementation of the activities of the Fraternity’s Historical Commission, Archives Committee, and the Monuments and Memorials Commission. The Sigma Chi Foundation is proud to fund the preservation of Sigma Chi’s history.

broadly defined, a codex is a collection of manuscripts stitched together in a single volume. ΣΧ CoDeX takes this ancient literary form and gives it a 21st century twist—with this online tool, the various holdings of the Sigma Chi archives are presented in a single place, accessible to any member of the Fraternity and the general public.

Using ΣΧ CoDeX, Sigma Chis can search the entire run of The Magazine of Sigma Chi and view articles; search and view historical images and documents; search the database of Sigma Chi authors; and view the artifacts in the museum at Sigma Chi Headquarters.

The first module allowing access to the back issues of The Magazine of Sigma Chi is now online with over 3,000 articles available—mostly from the 1940s through the 1970s. over time, the entire run will be

available from 1881 forward. The second module, allowing members to views photographs, went online in September 2011, and the manuscripts and objects modules are scheduled by the end of 2011.

Since the establishment of the Sigma Chi Historical initiative in 2005, providing fast, easy access to Sigma Chi’s collection of historical images, documents, and other resources to the Fraternity’s membership has been one of our primary goals. ΣΧ CoDeX is the result of that effort.

• Scholarships now include need- based considerations.

• The Sigma Chi Foundation created the Strong Arms of Support Scholarship Fund. This fund will be used to provide academic scholarships (that can include educational needs such as replacing a computer) to brothers impacted by a recent natural disaster or other exigent situation. The objective is to fill a financial need created by disaster.

• The Donor-Scholars Program An alumnus can endow an annual $1,000 named scholarship with a $25,000 gift. Donors are encouraged to provide biographical and contact information to facilitate a mentorship opportunity with the recipient. Donor Scholars Program

The Sigma Chi Foundation Donor Scholars program provides a naming opportunity to interested alumni who wish to directly support the Foundation’s expanding scholarship program. Thanks to donor support, the Sigma Chi Foundation has expanded its annual academic scholarships by 350% to $223,000 since 2006.

Donors contributing to this effort at an endowment level will have an annual academic scholarship named for themselves, or an honoree, for a minimum of 30 years.

Note: Naming gifts (excluding academic scholarship) are allocated to support direct and indirect program expenses. Additionally, each naming opportunity includes an allocation to the unrestricted fund. The Foundation may use a portion of each charitable contribution to support its charitable purposes.

The Sigma Chi Foundation allocates a reasonable percentage of its development and operations expense to unrestricted and restricted purpose funds.

Twenty accomplished brothers served as 2011 Balfour Leadership Training Workshop (BLTW) and Horizons Distinguished Visitors by invitation of Sigma Chi Foundation President and CEO Greg Harbaugh.

Sigma Chi Foundation’s 2011 BLTW and Horizons Distinguished Visitors were able to witness two of Sigma Chi’s outstanding leadership programs first hand. While their primary mission was to observe these programs in action, they were also invited to share their wisdom and perspective on leadership, character and values with participating undergraduates. Sigma Chi alumni who have attended these programs in the past have come away with a renewed passion for Sigma Chi, a better appreciation of the excellence of our leadership programs and increased recognition of the high leadership potential of our undergraduates.
