THE FOUNDATION OF ROYAL BRISBANE AND WOMEN’S HOSPITALRBWH Foundation was established just over 25 years ago as the charity arm of Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH), Queensland’s largest hospital.

Government funding for hospitals such as RBWH is often restricted by budgetary constraints, and available funding is being placed under further pressure as demand for hospital services increase in the face of an ageing population. RBWH Foundation’s key purpose, therefore, is to raise money that will enable our doctors, nurses, researchers and allied health professionals to achieve optimal patient outcomes by providing them with knowledge, skills and technology which may not otherwise be accessible. It is our aim that money generated through our fundraising activities and donations enable the health professionals at RBWH to attend additional training programs, conferences and seminars, conduct vital research, provide additional facilities and services and purchase life-saving equipment.

RBWH is the busiest hospital in Queensland and the largest tertiary referral hospital in the State, providing services to patients through Queensland, Northern New South Wales, the Northern Territory and neighbouring countries in the South West Pacifi c. While the hospital provides treatment and care for most medical conditions and health issues, including the largest cancer care service in Queensland, RBWH is particularly recognised as a leader in the fi elds of premature and seriously ill babies, burns and trauma care, emergency medicine, neurological conditions, kidney disease, mental health (including – youth mental health, substance abuse, schizophrenia and dementia), health care in the aged and infectious diseases…just to name a few.

The hospital also conducts extensive clinical research in the majority of these areas, and is home to a number of major research centres including the Perinatal Research Centre, Neurology Research Centre and the Burns, Trauma and Critical Care Research Centre.

The aim of research is, of course, to fi nd better treatments, methods of prevention and cures for these conditions. Research, however, takes time and money and it can’t be done without the generous support of individuals, community groups and businesses.

You can support this research, or help fund other initiatives of RBWH Foundation, by making a donation, purchasing merchandise, attending our various events, organising your own fundraising event, leaving a bequest to the foundation in your will, or nominating the foundation as your workplace’s charity of choice.

There are many other ways you can help, and we would be delighted to discuss these opportunities with you or your company. Simply contact the foundation on 07 3636 7588 or visit www.rbwhfoundation.com.au

CHAIRMAN’SREPORTIt is an honour for me to be appointed as Chairman of RBWH Foundation, an organisation which has a rich history and one which continues to make a difference to people everywhere.

I would like to say thank you to the foundation’s outgoing Chairman, Dr John Herron, who retired after three years of dedicated service.Dr Herron was appointed at a critical time in the foundation’s history and has made a signifi cant contribution to the foundation. Everything from culture, board composition and conduct, and CEO appointment, Dr Herron went about his duties diligently, quietly and with grace. We all owe him a huge debt of gratitude.

The foundation has achieved another record fi nancial result through a dedicated team effort involving the staff, Board, volunteers, partners and stakeholders from just about every facet of Queensland and beyond.

This has not only enabled us to increasingly fund our mission of supporting the clinical and medical research activities of RBWH, but it has allowed us to strengthen the foundation’s fi nancial position. Our aim is to create an organisation which will be able to make a perpetual contribution to the people of Queensland and beyond.

Of equal importance to the fi nancial result is the cooperation that is occurring between RBWH and the foundation. This has resulted from a repositioning of the foundation away from just medical research to the foundation for the whole of RBWH. My particular thanks to Dr David Alcorn, Executive Director, RBWH and his team and Peter Treseder, the foundation’s CEO, and his team for working together for the betterment of the whole hospital.

Peter’s team including, Karen Gallagher, Ari Panagioutou, Neal Stephen, Julie Wright, Rita Grice, Polly Brown, Cathy Yang, Ross Birkett, Derek Brown, Diana Christie, Cathy Johnstone, our kiosk volunteers, Lesley Waugh, Anne Gallagher and Musitapa Kamalijiang as well as the casual employees involved in the foundation’s TV operations have all worked tirelessly.

My colleagues on the Board and its two subcommittees, the Finance and Risk Management Committee and the Research Advisory Committee, are all volunteers and give of their time and expertise to ensure that the very best governance is applied to every aspect of the foundation’s activities. The collective wisdom of Board members Hamish Doley, Prof Lawrie Powell, Bruce Humphrys, Jenniwaty Luhur, John George, Peter Fardoulys, Scott McMullen and our newest members Cass George and Laura Perkins is invaluable. I am grateful to all. Another unqualifi ed fi nancial audit received from Queensland Audit Offi ce in relation to this year’s fi nancial results is testament to this.

I also pay particular thanks to the committees which oversee our various major events. The massive success of these functions - Right Royal Affair, Butterfl y Ball and Royal Doodle Do - is testament to the outstanding work of these committees.

Last year, Dr Herron commented that the foundation had a positive energy about it which has radiated and encompassed everything and everybody that comes within its orbit. This continues and is nurtured by the large number of donors and supporters who continue to join us in unprecedented numbers. To all of our stakeholders, thank you, we can’t do it without you.

ANGELSIt is my dream that all of us will gain strength from the beacon of hope that is provided by the Royal and that this beacon can be kept alight by the human spirit that we witness every minute of every day.

Because I believe, that angels breathe!

For today, I met a mother whose twin daughters are dying of cancer. They are all she has.

Today, I saw a nurse comforting her with dignity and compassion.

Today, I saw that nurse weeping quietly around the corner. Why, why. It’s not fair. It’s not fair that the dream is over. I need to help, I need to help, I need to help!!

Today, I found the nobility of her grief overwhelming!

Hallelujah.

I believe, that angels breathe!

For today, I met a surgical team, that had been on its feet for over 14 hours, celebrating a life saved.

Today, I saw a gardener take pride in a lawn he created for a very special patient.

Today, I saw a young medical researcher join the possibility of great discovery. The possibility of a noble triumph.

Today, I saw a volunteer comfort a hardened and gnarled Vietnam vet, who had just lost his wife, by holding him and catching his tears in her humanity.

I believe, that angels breathe!

For today, I witnessed the black clad emergency teams working frantically to save the life of a young women who was admitted to the Royal with 80% burns to her young body - a body that is now unrecognizable.

Today, I witnessed a cleaner overwhelmed by the young bodies lined up on the cold silver shelves in the morgue.

Today, I witnessed a gentle man crying with relief and happiness at the birth of his fi rst child.

Today, I witnessed parents walking out the front doors of the Royal with a spring in their step following their daughter’s all clear of breast cancer.

I believe, that angels breathe!

For in the dim light of hopelessness.

They are the grace in our every step.

The beating of our heart.

The whisper in the wind.

The shadow in the moonlight.

The warmth of our being.

Turn out the light.

For the angels live within each of us.

Hallelujah. CEO Peter Treseder’s speech at the 2011 Right Royal Affair.PAGE 6 Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Foundation

CEO’SREPORT

Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Foundation PAGE 7

OUR SUCCESS PRINCIPLES

The foundation’s continuing success is based on two simple principles:

THE TEAM

We recognise that our staff and volunteers are our most valued asset and we have created a work environment that brings out the best in each of us, where we:

• believe in ourselves, each other, our services and our organisation; • respect and serve each other and internal and external stakeholders equally; • own our actions, promises and professional behaviours; • value innovation and creativity as it helps to reinvent ourselves and our business; • model best practice and ethical behaviour in business, management and governance; • concentrate on our strengths rather than our weaknesses; and • create a fl exible work environment where everyone enjoys coming to work.

I would like say a sincere thanks to my colleagues, The Hon Dr John Herron, the recently retired foundation Chairman, The Hon Warwick Parer, AM, the new foundation Chairman, and the foundation’s Board for the support they have provided over the last 12 months.

OUR DONORS AND STAKEHOLDERS

We practice a simple philosophy that at every interaction we should aim to delight the donor/stakeholder. We recognise that professional friendly relationship management is the cornerstone of our business. Our experience is that if we do this well, our business grows by word of mouth.

Thank you to our many donors and stakeholders for your generous support and friendship.

OUR FINANCIAL RESULTS

We have achieved a record income of $5.37m (a 14.5% increase on prior year). This is an excellent result against the backdrop of the global fi nancial crisis and four natural Queensland and world disasters which occurred during the year.

These funds have been apportioned as 28% to mission (clinical and medical research activities of RBWH), 36% to balance sheet (with the aim of ensuring a strong and viable foundation for the future) and the remainder to operational costs. The total cost of fundraising activities was covered by revenue from our commercial activities.

The foundation manages a variety of special purpose funds which are earmarked to support numerous medical research and other initiatives. There is a large fl ow through of these funds as money is used for its intended purposes and replaced by further fundraising. OUR STRATEGIC GOALS

The 2010-11 fi nancial year represented the second year of activities to achieve our goals and address the key issues identifi ed in a strategic review completed in July 2009. This brings to a close the stage one activities which were aimed at stabilization and balance sheet strengthening, suffi cient to allow stage two expansion.

Stage two is now being guided by a further strategic analysis and review which was completed in June 2011. Stage two aims to:

• drive revenue growth through diversifi cation and fi nancial accountability; • build a structure to accommodate future growth - Pillars of Business; • stabilize traditional fundraising; and • focus on building commercial business. (The fi rst phase of this has been completed with the successful operational transfer of the hospital TV system to the foundation).

In line with our success, the foundation will continue to increase its fi nancial and other support for the hospital to assist it with a variety of initiatives.

With a strong and vibrant foundation, all of us will be able to keep alight the beacon of hope that is provided by the Royal and the human spirit which we invest in this will free our Angels for all that awaits for us to win!

The Queen made a special appearance at the 2011 Right Royal ‘British’ Affair.

During the 2010-11 fi nancial year, RBWH Foundation organised a number of fundraising events ranging from fun runs and gala dinners to black tie balls.

The biggest ‘Affair to Remember’ of the year was without doubt the 2011 Right Royal Affair at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday 18 June.

To celebrate the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate, this year’s event took on a distinctly British fl avour. The ballroom was dominated by Union Jacks, Her Royal Majesty made a very special appearance, guests were served roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and Spotted Dick for dinner and legendary rock band Dragon belted out all the hits from the British music invasion in the 1960s.

Over 700 guests came together and listened respectfully as special guest Mark Groth, 23, spoke of his fi ght with a rare form of Leukaemia. On hearing of the work done at the Royal to help save Mark’s life, guests then dug deep to help raise $450,000 for medical research at RBWH.

The success of the Right Royal Affair would not have been possible without the support of the voluntary steering committee - Chair, Raewyn Bailey (RB Recruitment), Lisa Atallah (Yellow Cabs), Angela Morrisby (Connectu2), Laura-Ann Courtney (Westpac), Pip Hold (Lord Mayor’s Offi ce) and Christine Budd (Mercedes-Benz Brisbane). RBWH Foundation is incredibly grateful for your valuable time, energy and support.

RBWH Foundation would also like to thank all of the businesses which sponsored tables on the night as well as those business and individuals who provided auction items and raffl e prizes. In particular, we recognise the generosity of Virgin Limited Edition, The Urbane Group, Channel 7’s Great South East, Dreamworld Events, Margot McKinney, Goa Billboards, Yellow Cabs, Gateway Media Group and the Brisbane Bandits. The foundation would also like to thank Tony Noble from A Noble Event who volunteered his time and expertise to ensure the evening ran like clockwork, PropHouse which ensured the room had a Right Royal British feel, Westpac which provided volunteers, and Jon Marshall and his team at Black Arts who provided all the creative and design elements.

2010-11 also saw the fi rst ever ‘Royal Doodle Do’ to raise money for motor neurone disease (MND) research conducted by Dr Rob Henderson and his team at RBWH.

The event was held in August at Rydges Hotel in South Bank, and the quirky doodling theme was chosen because it is a way for people to show what is on their minds - something which is often diffi cult for MND patients to do as the disease effectively stops the brain from communicating with the rest of the body, essentially leaving the mind trapped.

Guests on the night enthusiastically took up the theme, creating some very interesting and inspirational doodles. A number of celebrity doodles were also up for auction on the night.

The Royal Doodle Do was organised by RBWH foundation in conjunction with voluntary committee members Nicole Hutchinson and Leeanne O’Grady Woods. The foundation would also like to thank Down Under Cellars, Sanofi Aventis and Metropolitan Funerals for being major sponsors of the event, and Barry Webb who helped source so many amazing auction items.

Another memorable event in 2010-11 was the annual Butterfl y Ball to raise money for the Perinatal Research Centre at RBWH.

Held at Brisbane’s Hilton Hotel in October, this year’s Ball featured a stunning performance by Katie Noonan as well as a touching presentation by friends James Beaman and Nicholas Bladen who cycled from Melbourne to Brisbane to raise money for perinatal research in memory of James’ late twin girls Mary and Rose.

Over $100,000 was raised on the night to fund the fi ve-year Brain Research Advances in Newborns (BRAIN) Project being conducted by the hospital’s Perinatal Research Centre.

RBWH Foundation would like to thank the many people who helped make this night a success, particularly the voluntary members of the organising committee - Jenniwaty Luhur (Chair), Lynda Chen, Penny Williams (Studio Impressions), Amanda Kerr, Nancy Liu and Natja Gougoulas.

Thank you also to the event sponsors, namely Magnitude Private Wealth, Sealy, Brisbane BMW and Westside BMW.

Of course, not all RBWH Foundation events took place in glamorous ballrooms.

The 23rd annual Royal Run for Research was held in July in the City Botanic Gardens. The event is organised in conjunction with the RBWH Physiotherapy Department, and in 2010 it was proudly supported by Rebel Sport and Retravision.

Over 400 people took part in either the 8km run or 6km walk with $11,000 being raised for research at the hospital.

RBWH Foundation would like to thank the Physio Department for its efforts in putting this event together for the past 23 years. We also extend our sincere thanks to Rebel Sport, Retravision and all the other businesses which provided prizes and breakfast items for the day.

Finally, we wish to express our sincere gratitude to each and every individual who attended one of our fundraising events throughout the year. Events are a vital part of every charity’s fundraising endeavours, and we realise how many balls, dinners and other activities occur in Brisbane and throughout Queensland each year. That’s why we are so grateful that you chose to support our functions, as without you these events would not be successful and we certainly would not have been able to raise the vital funds that we have throughout the year.

SUMMARY OFCORPORATE SUPPORT

Foundation CEO Peter Treseder (left) shaking hands with Westpac’s Mark Kammholz, while the Foundation’s Ari Panagiotou and Westpac’s Karen Laursen look on.

RBWH Foundation highly values the support of our corporate partners - both small and large businesses who have recognised the important work of RBWH and have supported us in different ways.

In the 2010-11 fi nancial year, the foundation was thrilled to sign a three-year fundraising agreement with Westpac which will see the bank donate back money from fi nancial products such as new home loans and re-fi nancing packages taken up by RBWH staff, their families, friends and supporters. Westpac has also committed to sponsor the foundation’s Right Royal Affair for the next three years as well as support various other fundraising activities through engagement of staff and resources in the Brisbane City Westpac branches where ever possible. An exciting three years ahead.

Queensland Reds continued its partnership with RBWH Foundation in 2010-11. As one of its two charities of choice, the foundation was able to raise funds through one of the Reds’ home games at Suncorp Stadium, while also receiving a percentage of new membership fees. Reds players were a familiar sight at the hospital throughout the year as they met staff, talked to patients and held team meetings. The Reds also took part in the hospital’s Race to the Roof, sprinting up 12 fl ights of stairs from the ground fl oor of the Ned Hanlon Building to the helipad on the roof.

RBWH Foundation would like to take this opportunity to publicly congratulate the Reds on a phenomenal season and for winning the 2011 Super Rugby competition.

A business to newly appoint RBWH Foundation as its charity of choice during the fi nancial year was Royal on the Park. Since forming the partnership, this iconic Brisbane hotel has been actively collecting donations for the hospital, introducing fundraising initiatives, promoting the work of the hospital to its guests and organising events with the foundation as benefi ciary. One such event was the 2010 Melbourne Cup Lunch hosted by Channel 9’s Heather Foord. This successful lunch saw many hotel patrons and foundation supporters come together to raise money for the RBWH Mother’s Milk Bank.

Some of the foundation’s corporate partners choose to organise a specifi c event to raise funds for the hospital, while others, such as Mullins Lawyers who have raised over $40,000 over two years, choose to make the foundation the benefi ciary of their existing events or raise funds internally through staff team building activities.

The Food & Retail Services department at the hospital also specifi cally runs a Charity Golf Day each year to raise money for various research projects at the hospital.

The annual golf day is proud to have PDF Food Services as the major sponsor, and saw 144 players from various companies around South East Queensland’s food service industry come together to raise money for medical research conducted at RBWH. More than $38,000 was raised through the golf day in 2010 and over $160,000 has been raised since the fi rst golf day was held in 2006.

Examples of businesses and organisations that organised events and then chose to make RBWH Foundation the benefi ciary include the Australasian Tunnelling Society and Café Citrus.

Café Citrus, located in the Brisbane suburb of Bulimba, decided to give back to its community by hosting a series of free lunches for local seniors. Many local businesses got behind the Café’s owner, Glen Higgs, and donated food, prizes and other giveaways. As he incurred no costs, Glen then decided to donate the amount he would have spent on the lunches to the foundation.

The Australasian Tunnelling Society, which consists of engineers and other organisations involved with Queensland’s many tunnel projects, got together socially for the fi rst time in November at a golf day held at the St Lucia Golf Course. The golf day was so successful that it has now become an annual event.

Many of our corporate partners support RBWH Foundation-organised events. There are companies that choose to support through sponsoring our events. There are many, many companies who provide major items that can be auctioned off at our various balls and dinners. There are many companies who attend our events and introduce the foundation to their network of contacts. And there are companies that support the foundation’s activities by providing outlets for our fundraising activities - companies such as Amcal which sold our Mother’s Day merchandise through all of its outlets across Queensland.

RBWH Foundation also values the corporate partners who provide pro-bono services to assist with our activities. These services range from printing, creative design and assistance with staging our major event of the year, the Right Royal Affair, to legal and fi nancial advice. To that end, the foundation would like to thank Black Arts, All Clear Printers, A Noble Event, HopgoodGanim and KPMG.

Of course, the foundation continues to value and appreciate the support of our longer-term partners.

Wormald, leading fi re protection specialists, continued its fi ve year partnership in support of the hospital’s Burns, Trauma and Critical Care Research Centre. Wormald has been outstanding in its support, and the organisation’s fi nancial contribution has made a signifi cant difference, particularly to the lives of patients suffering serious burns.

Other longer-term partners which the foundation would like thank for their continuing support include AstraZeneca, Smith & Nephew, Edwards Lifesciences Pty Ltd and a notable mention must go to Avant Mutual Group, for its long-term major sponsorship of the annual Research Grant Awards ceremony.

The businesses mentioned on this page are just a few of our supporters from the corporate sector. RBWH Foundation is, of course, extremely grateful to each and every business that has made a contribution over the 2010-11 fi nancial year and we hope to continue to develop our partnerships over the coming years as we strive to save lives, give hope and provide patients with the best treatment available.

While RBWH plays a vital role in the community through the provision of health care and services, so does the community play a vital role at RBWH.

Each year RBWH foundation receives generous support from a wide-range of community groups, service clubs and small businesses all wanting to help others through their fundraising efforts.

Many of these groups organised specifi c events and activities to raise funds for RBWH Foundation and some of these initiatives included:

•Alex Burchell spear-headed the staging of the inaugural JazzPak Charity Concert at Ormiston College. Alex also led the all-saxophone ensemble Bird’s Apprentices in a number of performances around Brisbane throughout the year with all proceeds from their shows going to help various

areas of RBWH.•Robyn Simmonds, owner of Jam Jar Café, wanted to help a close friend being treated for leukaemia at RBWH. So, with the help of her son and co-owner of the café, Jamie, and all their staff, a week-long fundraising drive was held to support cancer research at RBWH.

•A group of friends in Brisbane’s western suburbs wanted to rally around and help a close mate who had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND). The result was the formation of the Western Suburbs MND Research Support Group and the group held a highly successful raffl e which saw many thousands of dollars raised for MND research conducted at the hospital.

•Catt Platt couldn’t stand by and do nothing when her niece was diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia. A keen golfer, Catt called on her club mates at the Carbrook Golf Club and the Charmie’s Charity Golf Day was launched. This was the second year of the event, and it’s now fi rmly established on the local golfi ng calendar.

•The recent opening of a special room in Maternity Services called The Butterfl y Room was only made possible by the generosity of a number of groups, most notably the Carindale Rotary Club. As a result of these generous donations, a former storage area was refurbished and turned into a quiet, peaceful room for mothers and families whose babies unfortunately die at birth.

Key initiatives driven by this generous group of supporters include the annual Butterfl y Ball where over 200 members of the Asian/Chinese community joined other foundation supporters to raise money for the Brain Research Advances In Newborns (BRAIN) Project being conducted by the Perinatal Research Centre based at the hospital. The foundation was also a benefi ciary of a donation presented at the Annual Buddha’s Birthday Festival by the Loving Care Group of the Buddha’s Light International Association of Queensland.

Our sincere thanks go to the Asian/Chinese community for its ongoing generosity and support as well as all the other organisations, clubs and businesses which gave so generously over the last year.

Finally, the foundation would like to thank and acknowledge a special group that has become a ‘community’ in its own right - the Royal Mums. These are women who have had babies at the hospital since it fi rst opened in 1938 and many of them have now become actively involved in giving back to the hospital which helped give them their children.

Many Royal Mums actively participate in foundation events and activities, they purchase our merchandise and other products, and they volunteer their time to assist with various fundraising endeavours.

Stephanie Hoppe’s baby Charlie Bear (23/11/2010 - 02/02/2011)much loved and greatly missed.

I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do. ~Edward Everett Hale

One person can make a huge difference, and during the 2010-11 fi nancial year, there were multiple examples of individuals doing their bit to make a difference to the health and well-being of others both now and in the future.

Young mum, Stephanie Hoppe, is one inspiring example.

On 23 November 2010, Stephanie gave birth to her son Charlie at 34 weeks gestation. He weighed just 1.4kg and prior scans had shown that he hadn’t grown past 27 weeks gestation. Charlie spent many weeks in RBWH’s Grantley Stable Neonatal Unit until he sadly passed away in February 2011. Doctors believed he had a rare blood condition that destroyed his brain.

Stephanie and her partner Josh were keen to show their gratitude to the staff at the Royal and also do something to keep the memory of their little ‘Charlie Bear’ alive. They therefore set about organising an

online auction in Charlie’s honour with all proceeds going to the Neonatal Unit and the proposed Mother’s Milk Bank.

Another individual making an incredible difference is motor neurone disease (MND) patient Michael Cole.

Michael passionately believes that more research is vital to understanding MND. It’s for that reason that not only is Michael actively participating in research being undertaken by Dr Rob Henderson at the Royal’s MND Clinic, he is also helping to raise the funds needed to keep this research going.

Michael, along with his brother Andy, organised a raffl e which raised over $7,000. Michael also spoke openly and honestly about his battle with the disease at the 2010 Royal Doodle Do, helping to raise over $35,000 on the night.

One individual who will make a perpetual difference to health and medical research in Australia is Patricia Dukes, who, upon her passing, transferred her large estate into a charitable foundation (The Patricia Dukes Foundation) and indicated that its earnings are to be distributed to support Australian health and medical research initiatives. RBWH foundation is fortunate to have received a large three year commitment from The Patricia Dukes Foundation, which will be used to fund three high quality medical research fellowships for three years. We are very grateful to her foundation for recognising the importance of the ground breaking research being completed at RBWH.

RBWH Foundation is, of course, extremely grateful to individuals like Stephanie, Michael and Patricia, but the foundation is also extremely grateful to each and every person that makes a donation, no matter what size, towards to life-saving work conducted at RBWH.

Many of these people choose to make a donation as a way of saying ‘thank-you’ for the care received while at the hospital. Others give because they understand the importance of medical research and the hope it gives for the future. And some individuals give because they know RBWH plays a vital role in our community.

We thank every single person that has made a donation during 2010-11. Each dollar we receive makes a huge difference to the research, equipment and training we are able to fund at the hospital.

RBWH Foundation is an integral part of Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital

We actively provide fi nancial and other support for a range of hospital activities and programs, we engage staff through participation in our own events and activities, and we actively promote the important role the hospital plays in the community as well as the many achievements of its medical staff.

One of the most important events on the hospital’s calendar each year is the RBWH Health Care Symposium, of which RBWH Foundation continues to be a major sponsor. Over 1,200 people, including members of the Australian Defence Force, attended the week long event in October with the program’s focus being on front-line emergency and trauma care.

Also in October each year, RBWH Foundation puts breast cancer under the spotlight with a week of activities that are designed to engage hospital staff, boost awareness of breast cancer and raise funds for cancer research and programs at RBWH. Over 30 wards and work areas across the hospital participated in 2010, turning what is generally a somewhat ‘sterile’ environment into a sea of pink and raising over $10,000.

The last day of Breast Cancer Awareness Week also saw the running of the hospital’s annual ‘Race to the Roof’. This is an event where hospital and other Queensland Government staff compete to be the fastest to run up 12 fl ights of stairs from the main lobby of RBWH’s Ned Hanlon Building to the helicopter pad on the roof.

To support RBWH’s strong track record in environmental management and to raise some additional funds, RBWH Foundation also introduced the Mobile 4 Charity scheme into the hospital early in the fi nancial year. A number of special phone recycling bins were placed around the campus and staff, visitors and patients were encouraged to bring in their old mobile phones and place them in the bins. The Mobile 4 Charity organisation then collects the phones for recycling and between $5 and $50 for each phone is donated back to the foundation.

The foundation got involved with a number of units in the hospital during the year to provide some unique support for their services. The foundation assisted lactation consultations by providing prizes to help promote Breastfeeding Week and engaged the help of community volunteers to sew special drain bags which are provided to each new breast cancer patient for their post-surgery care.

Back-of-house support was also given to assist in the organisation of a number of specialist symposiums and conferences. These included the Older Persons Mental Health Symposium in September 2010, the Trauma Symposium in November 2010, the Neonatal Seminar in February 2011, the Chronic Disease Workshop in March 2011 and the Aged Care Conference held in June 2011.

Since 2008, the foundation’s main presence in the hospital has been through the Royal Mums Honour Wall located on level 6. This unique listing of women who gave birth at the hospital boasts over 19,000 names and extends almost 20 metres. It is believed to be one of the largest honour rolls of women-only in the world. The wall is updated every year with the names of newly registered mothers.

Further enhancing the foundation’s presence in the hospital during 2010-11 was the opening of RBWH Foundation’s fi rst fully-fl edged shop. It is located in the lobby of the Ned Hanlon Building and sells a range of foundation merchandise, including the Royal Mums book, key rings and pens. The shop is manned solely by volunteers, so all profi ts from product sales go directly towards funding research and other services at the Royal.

Perhaps the most signifi cant addition to the foundation’s in-hospital activities in 2010-11 was the adoption of the hospital’s television service. The foundation is now fully responsible for the upkeep of all televisions across the hospital campus and for driving patient take-up of the service. All profi ts from the television usage fees are then kept by the foundation to assist with ongoing hospital funding requirements.

LEGACIES FOR THE FUTUREBEQUESTS

Gifts provided in a Will, commonly known as a bequests, are always appreciated by RBWH foundation and each year provide a substantial amount of funding which is invested into various areas of research work at RBWH.

This year was no different, and in 2010-11 bequests were received from the estates of:

Veronica BlackmanReginald James ChiversSybil Daphne FryNorma Estelle JondahlBeryl MartinJosef MatuzalemFrederick Charles Douglas OlsenJane Rowe

The value of research is recognised by a number of people every year who decide to leave a legacy to future generations by making a bequest in their Will. To those many people who have taken this generous step, we thank you sincerely.

Too often we do not know that someone has left a bequest to us until notifi ed after their passing. It is always nice to be able to acknowledge and thank someone for their generosity and thoughtfulness, and we do ask you to contact us if you have made - or are contemplating making - this wonderful gesture which will truly benefi t future generations.

IN MEMORIAM

Many families chose to make a lasting tribute to their loved one by making an In Memoriam donation to RBWH Foundation.

People often do this by asking friends and family to make a donation in lieu of fl owers at the time of the funeral. Some simply make a donation of their own, and others choose to remember that someone special by making a donation on the anniversary of their death, on their birthday, at Christmas or at another special time. Some people even give the instructions to make donations to RBWH Foundation in lieu of fl owers before they pass away.

This selfl ess choice is often a refl ection of the deceased’s life, interests, values or is simply a thank you for the care received while at RBWH.

These gifts make a real difference to the foundation and the hospital as it enables us to ensure excellence in patient care for generations to come through funding research, education, equipment and additional facilities.

Below is a list of all the people for whom In Memoriam donations were made in honour of during the 2010-11 fi nancial year:

Royal Family

RBWHFOUNDATIONROYALFAMILY

Each year, RBWH Foundation recognises its major donors of the past 12 months by making them honorary members of the foundation’s ‘Royal Family’.

For 2011, a total of 31 honorary memberships were bestowed to various individuals, families, businesses and community groups at the foundation’s Annual Research Grant Awards ceremony in February. These 31 memberships were based on one-off or cumulative contributions made during the 2010 calendar year.

The donors who receive these honorary memberships are considered to be the foundation’s ‘Jewels in the Crown’. Their membership to the Royal Family is therefore in

the categories of Diamond, Pearl, Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire, depending on the level of support given. Diamond Royal Family members are the foundation’s most treasured supporters.

The names of all new honorary members are added each year to the foundation’s offi cial donor recognition boards. These boards contain the names of the supporters who have made a signifi cant contribution to the hospital since the foundation was fi rst established in the mid-1980s. Known as the ‘Royal Family Honour Wall’, these boards are now on permanent display in the Admissions area of the Ned Hanlon Building at the hospital, and they will be updated each year with all new honorary family members.

RBWH Foundation raises money to provide ongoing funding to a number of major research centres based at RBWH. These include the Perinatal Research Centre, the Burns, Trauma & Critical Care Research Centre, the Renal Research Group and the Neurology Research Centre.

The foundation also funds a range of research projects through its annual Research Grant Awards program. These grants are awarded on merit to a range of different research projects from across the campus. They are designed to enable projects to get off the ground and establish a basis from which the researchers can apply for more substantial grants from larger external bodies.

A list of the recipients of the 2011 RBWH Foundation Research Grant Awards can be found on the following page.

Many of the research projects the foundation has funded have produced internationally-recognised results. Some examples include:

• By using brain mapping techniques combined with mathematical software that measures the number of motor units in each peripheral nerve, the motor neurone disease (MND) research team has discovered that the central pathways are not quite as complete in MND patients as they are in the brain of an unaffected person. This discovery should help create an objective marker for what is happening with the disease and assist in developing suitable treatment trials.

• The Perinatal Research Centre has uncovered evidence that a specifi c massage technique can assist a premature baby’s brain to develop to the same function of a full-term baby.

• A 10-year continuing study by the Gastroenterology Research Laboratory has shown that some growths in the bowel, previously known as hyperplastic polyps, can mutate and become cancerous. Previously thought to be of no signifi cance, researchers have found that these polyps may actually account for 20 per cent of all bowel cancers.

Throughout the 2010-11 fi nancial year, RBWH Foundation has raised money and provided funding for a number of items and activities at the hospital that are not necessarily research related.

Just two of the special projects that the foundation commenced raising funds for during the year include the Neonatal Unit’s Mother’s Milk Bank and the Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) Program being run by the hospital’s Trauma Service.

P.A.R.T.Y. is a program which teaches teenage school children to recognise potential injury-producing situations (often related to alcohol and/or drugs) and what behaviours to adopt in order to minimise unnecessary risk. This is done by placing students in a number of confronting simulated scenarios in areas such as the hospital’s Emergency Department. They also spend time with patients and families to gain an understanding of the impact of trauma on family and loved ones.

The Mother’s Milk Bank is a much needed service which will particularly benefi t premature babies in RBWH’s Grantley Stable Neonatal Unit. These babies lack the immune system of full-term babies and are obviously underdeveloped in a number of other ways. Breast milk is proven to be better than any other substitute at helping to speed up a premmie’s development and it can also provide protection for immature tissue and promote healing of damaged tissue.

Unfortunately, many new mums have trouble producing milk for their own baby, and their only current alternative is to feed the baby formula. Having access to natural breast milk which has been properly collected, screened and processed, will give these mother’s a potentially life-saving choice for their child.

Both the P.A.R.T.Y. Program and the Mother’s Milk Bank currently rely on RBWH Foundation for funding, and RBWH Foundation relies on the support of donors, corporate partners and community groups to help provide this funding.

ADDITIONALFUNDING GIVEN

In 2010-11, RBWH Foundation also provided funding for various specialist training programs and other activities. Some of the additional items that RBWH Foundation provided funding for in the fi nancial year include:

• Staff attendance at the 2010 Australia New Zealand Burns Association Annual Scientifi c Meeting •Staff attendance at National ICU Congress •Staff attendance at the ACCN and ANZICS Asia Pacifi c Critical Care Congress •Advanced staff training in emergency management of severe burns •Sponsorship of the annual RBWH Health Care Symposium and the following associated awards: - Best Clinical Science Oral Presentation - Best Clinical Science Poster Presentation - Best Clinical Oral Presentation - Best Clinical Poster Presentation - Best Basic Science Oral Presentation - Best Basic Science Poster Presentation - The Cecilia Brazil Nursing Research Award - The Allied Health Research Award - The Professor William Egerton Award for Surgical Research - The Sir Ian McFarlane Medal - Best Overall Research Presentation • Renovation of the RBWH Birth Suite quiet room (now known as the Butterfl y Room) •Department of Cardiology “Echo of the Year” award •Support for the Cardiology Heart Failure Service •Support for the P.A.R.T.Y.
