Reeves Field: Home of the EaglesReeves Field is one of the premier soccer facilities in the Washington, D.C. area, and has served as the home site for American University soccer since 1949. Reeves Field was named the 2002 College/University Soccer Field of the Year. It has also hosted six NCAA Tournament games and been the training site for numerous professional and national teams.

After being named Soccer Field of the Year by the Sports Turf Managers Association in 2002, Reeves Field underwent a $300,000 renovation three years later to construct a new foundation, replace the drainage system and install a new playing surface.

Reeves Field has gained notoriety throughout the collegiate and professional ranks as one of the finest fields in the nation. In the summer of 2011, both Manchester United FC and Everton FC trained at Reeves Field in preparation for matches in Washington. Seven years earlier, FC Barcelona and Blackburn used Reeves Field as a training facility. AU served as the practice site for Newcastle United, one of England’s premier professional soccer clubs during the summer of 2000. Major League Soccer’s D.C. United, Miami Fusion and San Jose Earthquakes have also practiced at AU. In 1996, national teams from the United States, Bolivia and Portugal trained at Reeves in preparation for Summer Olympic games.

Washington, D.C.: America’s Soccer Capital

The soccer atmosphere in Washington, D.C., is among the most passionate in the United States. The nation’s capital had the unique privilege of hosting the 1999 Women’s World Cup, the 1994 World Cup and the 1996 Olympic Soccer games.

Both the men’s and women’s U.S. National Teams have become especially enamored with the Washington area and RFK Stadium. The men’s team has hosted the U.S. Cup three times, in 1993, 1995 and 1996, winning all but one match. The women’s team also competed in the 1995 U.S. Cup at RFK. Both sides play numerous “friendlies” against other nations and chose Washington as one of their home sites for qualifying matches for the 1998 World Cup.

As a charter member of MLS, D.C. United fi rst stepped onto the pitch in 1996, and the team from the Nation’s Capital would quickly set the standard for excellence in the league on the fi eld and in the stands. In its history, D.C. United has earned more domestic and international honors than any other American side, battled some of the world’s most famous clubs, and built a fi ercely loyal and dedicated fan base that understands and appreciates world-class soccer.

David Bucciero begins his fourth season as the head coach at American University. He has accumulated a 9-6-6 record in the Patriot League and an overall mark of 22-30-7, which includes a .500 conference record or better

in each of his three campaigns.

On the Field

The 2010 season ended on a positive note with Bucciero’s Eagles rallying to for a 6-2-3 fi nish in their fi nal 11 matches. This included thrilling double overtime victories over both

Radford and Princeton during the non-conference slate. Additionally, the Eagles closed

The victory propelled AU to a 2-2-3 record in Patriot

League action and a 6-10-3 overall mark.

The 2009 campaign was extremely successful for American with its 5-2 Patriot League record,

good for a second-place result in the regular

season. The Eagles defeated

Bucknell in the Patriot League Semifi nals before falling 1-0 in sudden death double overtime to top-seeded Colgate in the fi nals. Bucciero was selected as the Patriot League Coach

of the Year, marking only the third time an AU women’s soccer coach has received the award. Additionally, four of Bucciero’s

student-athletes were selected to the All-Patriot League Teams,

which included Friederike Engel’s

Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year honor.

In 2008, his fi rst season at American University, Bucciero’s squad earned either a tie or win in fi ve of its last six contests. Additionally, in non-conference play, the Eagles played to a 1-1 draw at Maryland.

In the Classroom

Bucciero’s squad has shined in the classroom during his three seasons, consistently performing as one of the top academic programs at American as well as in the entire Patriot League. In his three years, 59 percent (87 of 148) of his student-athletes’ semesters have resulted in at least 3.5 GPAs, and 48 percent (71 of 148) of his student-athletes’ semesters were good enough to earn Dean’s List recognition. Additionally, his student-athletes have recorded 17 perfect 4.0 GPA semesters.

In the 2010-11 academic year, the Eagles recorded a stellar 3.55 team grade-point average, which set a new program record. Based on their fall 2010 performance, the Eagles earned the most Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selections with 20, the second straight year they had the most honorees of any conference program. American had four of the 12 Patriot League women’s soccer student-athletes who posted perfect 4.0 GPAs in the fall semester, and two student-athletes -- Friederike Engel and Jenna Stasiewicz -- earned 4.0s in both the fall and spring semesters. 2011 Season Outlook

The American University women’s soccer team enters the 2011 season with high expectations following a strong close to the 2010 campaign. After a diffi cult start to the season, the Eagles rallied to fi nish 6-2-3 in their fi nal 11 matches in 2010. Two of those victories -- against Radford and Princeton -- came in double overtime thrillers and American fi nished with a non-losing conference record for the third straight season under Head Coach Dave Bucciero.

The 2010 season culminated with a thrilling 3-2 victory at Navy in which the Eagles scored two goals in the fi nal 2:57 to earn the come-from-behind triumph. Kristin Piorun converted the game-tying goal off a feed from Brenna Smith and just over a minute later, Samantha Trotta knocked home the game-winner from a Michelle Montilio pass. Each of the four student-athletes who recorded points on these fi nal two scores return to the Eagles’ lineup in 2011.

American will lean on fi ve senior student-athletes to carry the leadership burden in 2011. Goalkeeper Arianna Efstathiou and defender Jenna Stasiewicz, the team’s co-captains, will be key to the squad’s success both on and off the fi eld. Efstathiou has started 31 games in her fi rst three seasons and will try

to regain her 2009 form where she recorded a 0.85 goals against average, the second lowest single-season GAA in program history. Stasiewicz, meanwhile, started AU’s fi nal 10 matches in 2010 with the Eagles posting a 6-1-3 record during that span. Additionally, classmate Allison Slattery started 16 games in the midfi eld a year ago and has made 49 career appearances as an Eagle.

A strong junior class of nine student-athletes will look to make the transition to upperclassmen. At the head of the class is midfi elder Michelle Montilio, who has started all 40 games in her fi rst two seasons. Forward Jasmine Mohandesi is American’s most-experienced returning striker, as she recorded a team-best three assists in 2010.

AU’s sophomore unit will be led by defender Brenna Smith, a stable on American’s back-line last season. She played a team-high 1,725 minutes in 2010 and started all 19 matches. Classmate MacKenzie Kerrigan also made 12 starts last season at defense, registering at least 90 minutes in seven matches.

Finally, American welcomes seven freshman and a junior transfer to the mix in 2011. These newcomers will help to fi ll the voids left by 2011 graduates Friederike Engel, Lindsey Farthing, and Brooke Sheppard. Last year’s class combined to earn six All-Patriot League accolades in their respective careers.

3.55 team GPA in 2010-11 academic year3.55 team GPA in 2010-11 academic year4242

• The Eagles closed the season with a 6-2-3 record in their fi nal 11 matches, which included two double overtime victories during the stretch. AU’s 2-2-3 Patriot League record marks the fi fth straight season that the Eagles have fi nished with at least a .500 mark in conference play.

• American closed the season with a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind triumph at Navy, which knocked the Midshipmen out of what would have been a Patriot League Tournament berth. Kristin Piorun knocked home the game-tying score in the 88th minute and Samantha Trotta followed just over a minute later with the winning strike.

• The Eagles completed the season with a 4-2-2 home record, which consisted of victories over Princeton, Radford, UMBC, and Vermont. American is now a combined 12-4-2 at Reeves Field over the last two seasons.

• 2011 graduate Friederike Engel (pictured to the left) departs American as arguably the most decorated student-athlete in program history. She is only the fi fth Patriot League student-athlete in conference history to be a four-time All-Patriot League First Team selection since the league began differentiating the fi rst and second teams in 1993. She was honored as the 2009 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and became AU women’s soccer’s fi rst ever ECAC Division I All-Star in that 2009 campaign.

• Engel’s classmate, Brooke Sheppard, also leaves big shoes to fi ll for the Eagles. The two-time All-Patriot League Second Team pick graduates with a program-record 78 career appearances after registering a team-high nine points in 2010. Sheppard is currently seventh in program history with 11 career assists.

• Engel and Sheppard, along with current senior Mikaila Weaver, were each named to the inaugural Academic All-Patriot League Team. American’s three selections were tied for the most of any conference women’s soccer program.

• American earned a conference-best 20 selections to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, marking the second straight year that the Eagles have had the most honorees in the conference. The Eagles registered a 3.54 grade-point average in the fall semester and a 3.55 mark in the spring with seven 4.0 GPAs in 2010-11.

Situated within the northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., American University’s traditional-style campus has much to offer students in the way of comfort, modern conveniences, and quick, easy access to city life.

Our 84-acre, tree-lined campus, which was designated as a National Arboretum, is located at the top of Embassy Row in one of the most attractive, safe, and residential areas of our nation’s capital.

The center of campus, also referred to as “the quad,” is a focal point of student life not only because our academic buildings line its grassy borders, but also because it’s a place to meet-and-greet with friends and student groups, catch an impromptu game of ultimate frisbee or take part in an after-class debrief with professors.

Another favorite spot on campus is the beach volleyball pit located between the athletics fi elds. The adjacent grassy hillside is also a well known hangout for students on game days.

Academic Support

The academic support program for student-athletes, a collaboration between the Academic Support Center and the Department of Athletics, assists student-athletes in successfully attaining academic goals and creating a balance between academics and athletics. The program serves to promote responsibility and initiative while encouraging student-athletes to take advantage of the rich resources offered at American University.

Academic counselors work with student-athletes on skills needed for success in the classroom, and provide information about educational options, university and NCAA requirements, as well as policies and procedures. The program focuses on the development of the total person through individual meetings, study hall and tutoring, and life skills workshops. AU’s academic support program coordinates with faculty, advisors, and coaches to support each student-athlete.
