In the Seawolf, the University of Alaska Anchorage

has one of the more unique mascots in the country . Originally nicknamed the Sourdoughs, UAA adopted the Seawolf moniker in 1977 . The

name Seawolf represents a mystical sea creature and, ac cording to the legend of the Seawolf, anyone fortunate enough to view it was subject to good luck . The exact nature or shape of the Seawolf, however, was left to the imagination and thus the creature has been depicted in many forms throughout the years . The Seawolf of today was introduced in 1985 . Created by the Clark Mishler & Associates Company of Anchorage in cooperation with a University committee, it represents an adaptation of a more traditional Alaska totemic-like characterization of the mythical Seawolf .

2011 CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING

2011 SEASON PREVIEW

2

After sweeping the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and NCAA

Division II West Region team titles last season, the Alaska Anchorage men’s and women’s cross country teams have the challenge of staying at the top in 2011 . And with the majority of both squads returning, expectations are high once again . Head coach Michael Friess returns six runners on the women’s team, including the top three from a year ago, and five on the men’s side as the Seawolves look to improve on their 6th- and 8th-place NCAA finishes, respectively. The women – No . 5 in the USTF-CCCA preseason national rankings – will pursue their third straight region and league titles behind the senior leadership of Ruth Keino, who delivered UAA’s best-ever individual finish at the NCAA Championships when she placed sev-enth last December . The two-time All-American and three-time all-conference performer won three races as a junior and was chosen the Bill MacKay UAA Ath-lete of the Year for 2011-12 . Junior Miriam Kipng’eno is another two-time All-American (12th at 2010 NCAAs) who can challenge to win any given race, leading the Seawolves three different times last year . Kipng’eno post-ed six top-3 finishes as a sophomore, in-cluding runner-up honors at the GNAC Championships . Another proven senior is Anchorage native Shoshana Keegan, who was the team’s third runner in six of seven races last season . The Steller Secondary grad placed in the top 10 five times, including fourth at West Regionals . Sophomores Susan Bick (Anchorage/Bartlett), Ivy O’Guinn (Soldotna/Skyview) and Katie Krehlik (Juneau) are three more Alas-kans who established themselves as the future of the program in their rookie sea-sons . Three transfers – Valerie Massie (Snohomish, Wash ./Everett CC), Christi Schmitz (North Pole/Corban [Ore .] Col-lege) and Susan Tanui (El Dovet, Kenya/Dallas Baptist) – and true freshman Bryn Haebe (Evergreen, Colo .) will look to crack the lineup in their rookie seasons . “Our women certainly will have better depth through our top 10 runners, but the

success of any team depends on the strength of your top five,” said Friess. “I think we have a chance of being at least as strong as last year, although much depends on health and the development of our athletes .” On the men’s side, Friess’s preseason 12th-ranked squad features two returning All-Americans with juniors Micah Chelimo and Jake Parisien, plus the return of fellow junior Alfred Kangogo from a medical red-shirt season . Chelimo was the team’s first runner across at the 2010 NCAA Championships, claiming his second All-America honor with a 21st-place finish. The Kapkoi, Kenya, na-tive was the GNAC runner-up as a sopho-more, trailing only teammate and three-time league titlist Marko Cheseto . Parisien, meanwhile, returned from a year off in 2010 and nearly equaled the All-America form of his freshman season, placing 43rd at NCAAs . The Palmer prod-uct was an all-conference and all-region performer as well, finishing seventh in both races . Kangogo – a two-time all-region and all-

conference performer – is back on the trails after redshirting last fall to recuperate from surgery to have a growth removed from his jaw . And last spring he proved himself at full health with a 3rd-place in the 1500 me-ters at the NCAA Track & Field Champion-ships . “Returning Alfred Kangogo on the men’s side will be helpful to us as losing Marko Cheseto will leave a big hole,” said Friess, who enters his 22nd year at the Seawolf helm in 2011-12 . “The team will be a sol-id one, however, and should contend for a conference title and a national appearance .” Senior Yonatan Yilma, from Edmonds, Wash ., was the GNAC Newcomer of the Year in 2010, while the Seawolves also re-turn veterans Michael Adams, a senior from Anchorage (Service), and Thomas Hill, a junior from Ontario . Four freshmen – Dylan Anthony (Ko-diak), Brandon Brewster (Anchorage/South), Issac Kangogo (Eldoret, Kenya) and Kevin Rooke (Toronto, Ontario) – will also join the fray as the Seawolf men try to win their third GNAC title in four years .

GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Stretching from Alaska to Oregon to Montana – and now to Canada – the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has quick-

ly established itself as one of the most successful leagues in the NCAA Division II ranks . Founded in 2001 as a 10-team league, the GNAC returned in 2010-11 to its original membership number with the addition of Simon Fraser of Burnaby, British Columbia . Along with Montana State Billings, which joined the league in 2007, Simon Fraser joined original GNAC members Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fair banks, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and

Western Washington . In the last four years, the GNAC has produced one national team title (2009 SPU women’s soccer), three national runner-up finishes, three NCAA Final 4 basketball appearances (all by UAA’s men and women), and top-5 NCAA women’s cross coun-try placings by both SPU and UAA in 2009 . UAA sponsors seven of the GNAC’s 14 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross coun-try, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field .

DR. STEVE CObbDirector of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In 11 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr . Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprec-edented heights . Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of com-petition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways . Starting with the 2007-08 campaign, UAA has enjoyed four of the most memorable athletic seasons in school history, highlighted by three Final Four

appearances for Seawolf basketball teams (women twice, men once), plus NCAA top-15 fin-ishes for men’s and women’s cross country (four times), skiing (four times), and men’s track & field (twice) . In fact, with UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals . Under Dr . Cobb’s leadership, ground soon will be broken on UAA’s planned $109 million Seawolf and Community Arena on campus . SEAWOLF ATHLETICSNicknamed the Seawolves, UAA’s athletic teams compete as members of NCAA Division I in men’s ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and NCAA Division II in all other sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, and women’s cross country.

UAA annually hosts the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout men’s and women’s basketball tournament — recognized as one of the top in-season tournaments in the nation — as well as the Kendall Hockey Classic.

Since joining the NCAA ranks in 1977, UAA has become a perennial national power in many of its sports. A total of 164 Sea-wolves have earned All-America honors, and UAA has produced 15 individual national champions since 1991.

The 2010-11 campaign will go down as one of the most over-all successful years in Seawolf Athletics history as 10 of 11 UAA teams advanced in postseason competition, including the second-ever WCHA Final Five appearance for hockey. Both basketball and cross country squads, plus volleyball, skiing and track & field, made NCAA appearances.

Seawolves student-athletes have enjoyed unprecedented suc-cess in the classroom, compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.0+ in 14 of the last 17 years.

This is UAA!ACADEMICS

The University of Alaska Anchorage is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university, serving nearly 20,000 stu-dents through four primary campuses and numerous other sites in Southcentral Alaska and the Aleutian Chain. Situated in the heart of Alaska’s biggest city, UAA is nestled in the middle of a greenbelt, surrounded by ponds, lakes and wildlife, and is connected to a city-wide trail and transportation system. UAA is comprised of six teaching units at the Anchorage campus — the colleges of Education, Health & Social Welfare, Arts & Sciences, Business & Public Policy; the Community & Technical College; and the School of Engineering. Organized research units at UAA complement the academic programs and reflect the special character of the Univer sity’s mission in Alaska. Research units include the Alaska Center for International Business, the American Russian Center, the Environment and Natural Resources Institute, the Center of Alcohol and Addic-tion Studies, the Center for Economic Education, the Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies, the Center for Human Development, the Institute of Social and Economic Research and the Justice Center. UAA operates on a semester system. Fifteen semester credits are a normal class load and a mini-mum of 120 credits are required to complete a bachelor’s degree.
