IntroductionThe purpose of this document is to introduce the depth of the Motocross fan and the advertising/marketing means associated with the sport.
In today's Motorsports marketing, NASCAR is credited for the success of exposing racing to millions of fans. This marketing accomplishment has given advertisers accurate advertising metrics for the dollars spent. With the rapid growth of motorsports, the American Motorcyclists Association (AMA) has positioned the sport of Motocross with the same logic.
Round 2 of the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Championship at Miller ranch, is the only national event in Texas (Denver, CO being the nearest). This places even greater value on the event itself. For most, this will be their only trip they make each year.
Why should you be associated with Motocross? Today’s consumers are cutting- edge, interactive, and young minded giving motocross its charisma. This is the advertising appeal.

History of MotocrossThe AMA was established in 1924. Motocross (MX) which is defined by Webster as “a closed-course motorcycle race over natural or simulated rough terrain” and was developed after World War II in Europe. In 1947, the Europeans (under FIM sanctioning) developed an annual motocross event for all the neighboring countries to compete in.
It was not until the late 1960’s that Motocross had made it’s way to North America when Europe’s best riders came to the U.S. for match races. By 1972, the AMA had developed a formal National Championship series in America.
Riders from Europe dominated the motocross scene until the late 1970’s. By the 1980’s, the place to be was America. With the age of action sports, Motocross is revered as the original “King of X-treme.” If a young kid ever dreams to become a superstar in motocross racing today, the place to be is in the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship.
In 2010, the AMA boasted over 280,000 card-holding members. The AMA also lobbies for the rights of all motorcyclists in the United States Congress and Legislature.
“They (Motocross riders) may be the most well-conditioned athletes in sports. They are part marathon runner, part boxer.”
