About the photographer:Dawn Maurer Derr was born and raised in Berks County. A journalist and public relations specialist by trade, she enjoys snapping candidsthat capture special moments. Her passion to photograph horses was realized when her daughter took a liking to ponies at an early ageand has since become an avid rider. She and her family are members of the Berks Equine Council, Berks Pony Club, and the Oley ValleyCombined Training Association. They enjoy spending family time at Vue de Lou Stables, a private equine facility they recently designed inSouth Heidelberg Township.

Whether you are new to Berks County or a veteran, having easy access to information isimportant. That is why the Berks Equine Council developed this resource guide! Wewanted to assist horse owners in Berks County with where they can get the services andgoods they need for their operation. We hope you take the time to visit the vendors andadvertisers listed in our publication as well as learn more about the Berks Equine Council!
The History of the Berks Equine Council
Like many non-profit organizations, the Berks Equine Council started as an idea. An ideaposed to unite and support the equine community of Berks County.
Originally known as "Berks Equine Incentives", the group was composed of 6 individuals,including Honorary Chairman & County Commissioner, Judy Schwank, who gatheredtogether in 2003 to fulfill a vision.
At that time, their goals were to maintain the beauty that is Berks County through horsesand the business they generate. Furthermore, this group was also dedicated to the con-cept of harnessing the collective energy of fellow "horse" enthusiasts for the purpose ofenhancing and renewing equine activities in Berks County.
In 2004, the organization was re-named the Berks Equine Council. Since that time, theBEC has continued to evolve to meet the needs of the equine community. The BEC is amembership organization that is open to equine enthusiasts and professionals who prac-tice all disciplines and ride all breeds of horses.
At the end of 2009, the organization created a strategic plan and modified its missionstatement. It states,
"The Berks Equine Council is a non-profit membership organization that serves as an edu-cational resource and promotes activities for local equine enthusiasts and professionals,thus enhancing the quality of life of Berks County."
Each year, the Berks Equine Council hosts multiple educational seminars and clinics, amember picnic & trail ride, as well as our annual Horse Show, Judged Trail Ride andDenim & Dancing fundraiser.
