The four-year undergraduate education at schools

f architecture in Turkey is based on giving basic

nformation both on the practical and also the

heoretical aspects of architecture. The main emphasis

n the Master of Architecture Program in Architectural

Design with Thesis Program at Istanbul KltrUniversity is to improve and deepen the scope of the

    asic information given during undergraduate

ducation. The aim of the program is to bring up

ndividuals and architects who are able to think deeply

nd analytically on themselves and on their profession

n the context of the complex structure of theontemporary world.

Architecture does not only have its own peculiar

losed field of information. The knowledge of

rchitecture, in addition to its ontological knowledge,

s constituted and improved by being nourished from

ocial sciences, philosophy, psychology, economy and

echnology. Developing a holistic view, comprising

hese different fields of knowledge, is very important

or architecture that aims to shape the physicalnvironment of people.

The main research fields of the program are

rchitectural theory and philosophy, design problems,

ity and architecture, landscape and architecture,

heories and methods in architectural education and

nvironmental psychology. In this context, the aim is

o develop studies, targeting to start discussions on

rban and social geography, thought and building

ystems, time and space concepts, and modern andurrent technologies, to improve the skill of analyzing

nd evaluating architectural products in the context of

rchitectural concepts, and to develop a unique view

riented towards reading urban phenomena and

    rchitectural products.

Students are expected to complete an original

cademic/scientific study and present this in the

ormat of thesis at the end of the M. Arch program.

Thus, with the participation of experts from variodisciplines and the intensive effort of the student

architectural design studio becomes a process enabli

students to understand and analyze the contempora

world, by using the tools of architecture, instead

being a simple architectural end product.

Students empower and nourish the abov

    The importance of conservation education

indisputable in a country like Turkey, which has such

rich historical repertoire. However, wrong decisioand unqualified practices give irreversible damage

our cultural heritage. The aim of the program is

overcome this deficiency and provide architects th

necessary specialization education on the conservatio

    of historic buildings and sites.

In the context of these two different scales

conservation in the program, information is given o

theories of restoration; principles of contemporaconservation; documentation of cultural heritag

Over the last decades, there has been a gre

tendency of designing cities via large sca

regeneration projects in Turkey and in the world. N

doubt this tendency reveals an opportunity for th

architects and urban planners. Considering th

opportunity, the basic purpose of the MSc Program

Urban Planning is to empower architects and planner

who will intervene in urban space via urban desigprojects, with adequate knowledge, and to improv

their ability of implementation with contempora

urban design method and techniques. Thus, trackin

the developments abroad by co-projects an

workshops, while providing information and experti

infrastructure in order to define the problem an

create solutions are among the goals of the Program.

Urban Planning MSc Program, which is directed b

the economical, social and political factors anprocesses shaping urban space, is conducted b

    Studies

As a sub-program of Lifelong Learning Program (LLP), devise

achieve a common compatibility and modernization with

wide variety of countries that are either members of EU or

are in membership process, the aim of the ERASMUS Progra

to encourage and support academic collaborations of hig

education institutions in Europe. Through this program, hig

education institutions receive financial support for tcollaborative projects, and for various exchanges of t

students, teaching staff and administrational staff.

As in other European countries, higher education student

Turkey are able to take part in the ERASMUS Program thro

education or summer internship mobility, each being only o

throughout their education period. Graduate education lev

particularly preferred for mobility in many EU countries beca

of its flexible and individualized structure, which can

programmed according to the students specialization. Mobcan be realized either during the phase of courses or the ph

    of thesis.

At the graduate level, our department has bilateral agreem

with 16 distinguished universities in Europe.

Graduate students applying for ERASMUS Student Mobility

selected according to their ERASMUS Grades, determined

the average of their foreign language examination results

their GPAs (Grade Point Average), as well as their ranpreference. After this selection stage, students get

opportunity to study at a higher education institution for ontwo semesters, appropriate for their subject of study under

supervision of an academician, speaking one of

international languages, at the institution they choose.

    ERASMUS / Student Mobility

    ERASMUS / Lifelong Learning Program

In the context of ERASMUS Summer Internship Mobility, w

was started in Europe in 2009, students are encouraged t

into contact and arrange an office or an institution to work

EU countries for 3 months (90 days) to increase their exper

in areas of their specialization. In order to apply for this pro

in addition to the adequacy of ERASMUS Grades (the avera

their foreign language exam and GPA grades) within the ra

the applicants, an invitation letter from the instituti

necessary. The salaries of the students are paid by the ERAS

Fund through our university, depending on the country whe

students work. Since the office or the institution does not
