ISS & Check and Connect Programs

ISS (In –School Suspension) will b e in room 2611. Teachers should supply work for the students on ISS. Contact the teachers assigned to that program. Three computers and a teacher computer there for usage.

Check and Connect when students are not on ISS. You will have at least one student attached to you for Check and Connect.

Monitoring Attendance and Lates

InSchool/Parent Portal will help.Parent will be able to view their child’s

attendance.Use email as a way to contact the VP’s

about those skipping your classes.Office will also monitor attendance.Attendance letters after ‘X’ number of

During Regular Class time Each class will exit the building with their subject teacher. Each teacher should keep an updated class list ready for

attendance purposes. Attendance should be taken (and submitted!) at start of class.

Teachers should continuously review fire exit plans on a regular basis with their classes.

It is a nice idea to leave a fire exit plan folder for any substitute teacher.

Each member of the class should follow the posted fire exit plans to exit the classroom in a timely but organized fashion.

Teacher will leave the classroom last, ensuring all windows are closed, doors are closed BUT unlocked and lights are off.

Classes are to line up orderly in the proper line location.

Once outside, teachers are to quickly take attendance for this class.

Please report any missing students (who were present for that class) to school administration ASAP via the Wing Commander.

Ensure that students who are out of the classroom (at the washroom, etc.) when a fire alarm sounds know where to go.

EA’s who are with students remain with students. The subject teacher includes the EA(s) on the attendance for the Wing Commander.

Teachers on prep period please report to your area and ensure that the Wing Commander is aware that you are present.

Support staff, cafeteria workers, etc. assemble with office staff for attendance purposes.

Students on free: Line up with Virginie L-W in BLUE WING spaces. Sheila will provide Virginie with a list of students who have a free that period.

During recess/noontime - Traditional Horton Fire Drill method to be used:

Students exit the building from closest exit and assemble by homeroom, according to their wing color

This plan will need to be reviewed during homeroom time. Home room teachers should accompany their classes to the designated

space during home room time on the first or second day with students. Remind home room students which colour wing their home room is in.

This will help them to locate their class in the event of an unexpected fire alarm.

Home room teachers: Please have another staff member (preferably one without home room responsibilities) in place in the event of a fire alarm taking place when you are out of the building. They should be given a class list and the location of where your home room lines up. 

Note: During the school year each type of fire drill will be practiced. A “home room” drill will likely take place at the end of recess or noon hour. Some (but not all) fire drills will be announced to staff in advance.

The protocol is to talk to me about it, then we will inform Jean of the order.

Please submit small receipts once a month regardless, not just the debit though.

All receipts have to be forwarded to Jean before March 31st (Board policy).

Groceries, small items still need to go through me as I am responsible for all monies going through the building.

Expense claim forms need to be submitted once a month as well.

All fundraising activities need to go through me for approval, this includes uniforms, clothing for sports teams.

Phrase for parents: Cumulative marks follow a system where category percentages are attached to a variety of assessments. Cumulative marks provide a ‘snapshot’ of a student’s progress at any time in the course. Using this grading system will compliment the new InSchool program as parents and students can get an accurate account of the marks after assessments are graded.

Everyone will set up their grade books the same for consistency, ie everything goes in F1, if you have an NSE put it in E1. Once you get your grade book set up(ASAP), ask a colleague to check it.

Teachers will have time to update and post marks.

Please be careful with calculations, if you are unsure we have staff members that have strengths in that area.

PD focus for this year, we started it last year, it will be the basis of accreditation.

I have a list of teams to start with, the leaders will be the PAC members.

Pre IB year, site visit later in the Fall (first week in October), the team will interview staff members.

The Coordinator’s role is to recruit the students and sustain the numbers. Jay’s Coordinator position will be 50% next year, we will get a full FTE as well.

Staff buy in is critical to the sustainability of the program.

Students with illnesses: Please make contact with home regarding homework. Two options are the envelopes in Student Services or through email and your webpage; however do not assume the child has access to the Internet. We need to begin placing notes in the envelopes saying there is no homework assigned for communication purposes.

Please remember we are Educators, not Physicians. Suspensions: The same as above. This example is more

complicated, parents enjoy calling me to say there was no homework in the envelope while their child was suspended. VP’s and I will circulate for homework if necessary.

Have a system in place and let students know the expectations while they are away and how to access the homework.

As educators we are obligated to provide work; we cannot stop giving it because it has not been turned in; we still have to do our part.

20 minutes before instructional time begins.After buses leave in the afternoon (contract says

15 minutes).If you are going to be late to school or if you

need to leave before the buses, I need to know.One period in the afternoon! If you have a prep

There is nothing wrong with taking late assignments.

There should be some sort of due date though.Presentation by Renata and Joanne from AVRSB

focus group scheduled on the PD Plan.Teachers have different methods of motivating

students to hand things in.Inviting students in to finish assignments.Having a ‘terminal deadline’ that you established like for

example two weeks after due date or at the end of each term.

Complete while on ISS (this will take communication with one of the supervising teachers).

Parent Portal should help.Don’t assume everyone is checking the Parent Portal.Major assignments are not handed in, contact home before

the ‘terminal deadline’.Missed tests, contact home.Emails, calls.Remember that not all students have advocates living at

home and school may be the best thing in their lives. Kids can’t choose their parents.

Please let me know if parents are abusive or harassing you. I will take over the communication between you and the parent.

These are important for a positive school climate, but we will limit the number we have.

The PC is fully booked with classes this year. Each time we schedule an event in the PC we are displacing a class.

Talent shows as fund raisers will be limited. This is a difficult one, as they should be educational in nature in order to use instructional time, especially when we charge money (a social justice issue in itself).
