WHY UOIT? JOIN ONE OF CANADA’SNEWEST UNIVERSITIES

UOIT’s unique and technology-rich teaching and learning environment challenges students to push the boundaries of innovation and

discovery and prepares them to excel in the global, knowledge-driven

economy of the 21st century. Many of our programs are unique in

Canada.

UOIT students are inspired by a diverse group of world-class faculty

who are dedicated members of the teaching profession and eager

to provide you with opportunities to undertake research projects

from the undergraduate to the graduate level. They understand that hands-on experience gives you an edge when it comes to finding a

job or pursuing graduate studies and research careers. Student faculty

research collaborations are important components of education at

UOIT and this unique one-on-one model is an integral part of your

student experience.

With a full-time enrolment of more than 7,500 and strong growth

anticipated over the next decade, UOIT’s outstanding learning

environment is growing too:

:: UOIT is in the midst of expanding its downtown Oshawa campus

while also adding new classrooms, labs, study areas and state-of-

the-art learning facilities on our north Oshawa campus;

:: The new General Motors of Canada Automotive Centre of Excellence

(ACE) at our north Oshawa campus, provides faculty, staff, students

and industry partners with access to the first commercial automotive

research, development and innovation centre of its kind in the

world; and

:: The new Energy Research Centre (ERC) at our north Oshawa

campus will open in spring 2011. The ERC will serve as the premier

training ground for future energy scientists and nuclear engineers

while enabling leading-edge research in the development of clean

and green energy and technology.

These are exciting times for UOIT and we look forward to sharing

them with you.

STUDENTS FINDSATISFACTION AT UOIT

In 2009, UOIT was included in the annual, national ranking of

Canadian universities published by Maclean’s magazine for the

first time. UOIT ranked high in the category of services provided to

students, placed first in obtaining Social Sciences and Humanities

grants and fourth in Medical/Science grants.

A North American survey conducted by the National Survey of

Student Engagement (NSSE) demonstrated how UOIT students

ranked us ahead of our peer groups compared to 769 other

post-secondary institutions, pointing in particular to the university’s

state-of-the-art technology, academically challenging programsand collaborations with expert faculty. In the benchmark category

of Level of Academic Challenge, UOIT’s first- and fourth-year scores

placed ahead of the Ontario average, the scores of the U.S. peer

group and the average of the entire NSSE population.

Students are also drawn to UOIT by the overwhelming sense of

community and friendliness on campus.

extensiveLEARNING REINVENTED

You have never experienced education like this before. UOIT’s national

award-winning laptop learning environment allows you to easily connect

with your professors and peers – and puts you one step ahead upon

graduation.

You receive a high-end laptop at the beginning of your studies and

your professors develop sophisticated course content using a powerful,

campus-wide online learning management system. One of the greatest

advantages of this educational approach is that all students, no matter

which faculty or program, have equal access to the same technology,

resources and services – such as smart boards and Turning Point

student remote control clickers. Unique examples include:

:: Video game simulation students use cutting-edge motion-capture

3D technology and have a sound recording studio;

:: Chemistry students use ChemDraw: a 3D software program which

draws molecules; and

:: Students in the nursing program have access to a full-scale critical

care (emergency room) patient simulation lab.

Inside or outside of the classroom, you can make quality computer-

based presentations, conduct research, work electronically on your

own or with other students and have seamless access to all online

resources. An annual fee covers the use of your hardware learning tools, extensive technical support, virus protection, high-speed

Internet, printing services, insurance and a wide-range of program-

specific hardware.

To ensure you receive even more value for your education and greater

return on your investment, all laptops are annually refreshed with

appropriate software and upgraded every two years.
