PATTERN CATEGORIESWhat is the difference between a Professional Workroom pattern and a So Beautiful, Sew Easy pattern?

Sometimes (but not always) the sewing technique is more diffi cult. We expect the professional to be familiar with certain procedures and terminology. Some of these patterns are not diffi cult for the experienced home sewer, however you may not understand the terminology. If you have our Designer’s Digest and Workroom Manual Collection, you can look up the meaning of these words and procedures.

HOW TO READ THE YARDAGE PAGEAND FIGURE YARDAGE

Figuring yardage for Window Treatments is confusing for a lot of people. It is very different from yardage for a garment you plan to sew. You should expect that it will take some time for your determinations. You will not be able to glance at the yardage page and see that you need 9 yards.

It is important that you read the description of the treatment fi rst. This information is found at the top of the yardage page. You will then understand the elements of the design and the different design choices you have. It will also state the size range, and if alterations can be made. After reading the description, you can then determine which pattern pieces you will need to use.

It’s a good idea to draw a simple sketch, or jot down each pattern piece you will need for each window.

After you have selected the fabric, measure the fabric width. The yardage page will give you the width and depth of each pattern piece. You can then determine how many of the pattern pieces will fi t on that width of fabric.

Continue with another width of fabric for the other pattern pieces, etc. Naturally the depth of the pattern pieces will dictate how deep each width of the fabric will need to be. (The deepest pattern piece used on that width would be the depth). Add each depth (or length) of fabric together to get the yardage. All of this information applies if the fabric is solid, or of some design that you don’t have to match fabric print repeats. For those fabrics, your lengths of the fabric may need to be deeper. To understand how to fi gure yardage for fabric repeats, go to our web site www.mfay.com and click on “Yardage Pages”.

CONTROLLING FABRIC BULK INPLEATED SWAGS AND JABOTS

Step 1 Cut the jabot interlining with the same grain you cut the face and lining fabric. Cut the swag lining and interlining on the bias, even if you cut the face fabric upright.

Step 2 Place the interlining against the wrong side of the lining. Pin all sides. Machine baste the interlining to the lining about 1” to 2” below the board line in the pleat or gathered areas. Trim the interlining close to the stitching. This will eliminate bulk from the top of the board later.

Step 3 Place the right side of the lining against the right side of the face fabric, stitch across the bottom of the swag. Stitch across the top also if it is a pole swag. Stitch the sides and bottom of the jabot, leaving the top open. Trim the interlining close to the stitch-ing at these seams.

Step 4 Trim the seams according to the pattern directions, turn the fabric right side out. The interlining should now be between the lining and the face fabric.

Step 5 Continue to make the item according to the pattern instruction book.

You can eliminate even more fabric bulk if you trim away the lining after it has been stitched to the item at the board line. This means that pleated swags would have to be stitched at the zigzag areas before pleating is done.

ELIMINATE BULK FROM PLEATED SWAGS AND JABOTS

When board mounted swags and jabots overlap and stack, additional steps can be taken to eliminate bulk. Determine which pleated end of the swag or jabot will be underneath. This procedure should be done only to the end of the swag or jabot that will be under-neath and the area you will alter can only be as wide as the swag overlap size or the jabot width. Sew the interlining to the lining 1 1/2” below the board line, trim away the interlining. Sew the lining to the face fabric 1” below the board line. Trim away the lining close to the stitching. Pin in the pleats and machine stitch to secure them, 1” below the board line.

Cut a strip of the face fabric and a strip of lining 2” wider than the alteration area and about 4” deep. Place the right side of the face fabric strip against the right side of the swag pleats. Place the right side of the lining strip against the right side of the lining side of the swag pleats. Stitch these strips to the swag 1” below the board line. Trim away all the fabrics in the alteration area, close to the stitching.

Tuck in the raw edges of the strips and press them up, stitch or glue to close. Stitch across the top to indicate the “board line”. Trim away any excess fabric at the top, if desired.

The fl at strips of fabric will now be all that is attached to the top of the board. There is no bulk to interfere with the swag or jabot that will need to stack over it. The bulk has also been elimi-nated from the thickness of the board edge, allowing the overlapped swag or jabot to hang straighter. More informa-tion for avoiding mounting problems for swags and jabots is given on page 5A-9 of our Workroom Manual.

The fronts of these pillows are cut into four sections, allowing numerous possibilities for design, from a simple stripe fabric or use multiple fabrics. Sizes 12” to 26” square.

Includes pattern and instructions to make 4” upholstered mount board. Use it as your mount board for swags, valances, cur-tains, etc. Bendable plywood is required in making the Ondule’ Mount Board.

These are basic square pillows. The fronts have separate over-lays that are stitched into the outside seams of the pillows. The cut-outs of these overlays allow the fabric on the basic pillow to show through. Views A, B, and C have a fl at surface, while views D and E have the addition of pleats at the center (giving a three dimensional effect). View F is the same as views A, B, or C, ex-cept the tips of the overlay are fl ipped back and tacked in place. View G has the side overlays left free at the center. This allows them to spread like wings.

Used for the Ondule’ Mount Board (9285). Also create your own mount board for swags, va-lances, curtains, etc.

Window #310 is a popular design from the “M’Fay Designer’s Digest”. These designs were created by mixing various patterns, and/or by changing an existing pattern. The valance design is actually two valances made the same depth, installed on separate boards. The top valance is installed 3” higher than the one underneath. The top valance also has a projection 1 1/2” deeper. This gives depth between the two valances. This is a soft, fl at valance with pleats that “kick out” at the corners. The center of the board juts outward 4”, displaying the majestic valance beautifully. The board pattern and instruc-tions are also included. The valance, as is, has a 20” deep point and 12” short point, and can be altered for any depth. There are complete instructions for a Straight Roman Shade. Instructions for the shade feature the Sure Shades™ lift system with roller tube and lift bands by www.rowleycompany.com.

*Revised 2010

This soft valance consists of a center section, two horns, and two side sections. All pieces sew together to create one valance before attaching to the mount board. The valance depth is 18” at the center. The horn is 12 1/2” at the shortest point. The valance sides are about 49 1/2” deep. Depth alterations are included, but all pieces must alter the same amount. The pattern will fi t windows 56” to 66” or wider. It is not recommended for more narrow windows. The wide sides would close it up too much, and the center scallop section would have to be too small in scale. The center section can be 14” to 24” wide. You can alter it to be wider, or you can use more than one, with horns in between. The side section fi nishes 21” wide (per side) on front of the board.

There are a variety of width sizes for the valance sections. There is also a 6” wide accent piece that is optional to use between the valance sections. Also included, is a decorative tail piece that is optional to use at each end. Each valance sections is made as a fl at piece (contrast lined). When placed over a pole, the back of the valance can hang 19” or up to 21” deep at the deepest point. Alteration instructions are included to make the valance any depth.

This valance has a center section with a side section, horn, and jabot on each side (or an alternative simple return). The fi nished valance is attached to 5 decora-tive holdbacks. If you choose, you can repeat as many center sections as you wish, there is an additional center pleat pattern to sew between them. The center section comes in sizes 18”, 22”, 26”, and 30”. Instruc-tions to alter the width of the center section patterns are given. The side section comes in sizes 9” and 12”. The depth of the valance can be altered, but all pieces have to be altered to fi t each other.

Alteration instructions are included to make the valance section wider, and deeper. You cannot take away or add additional sections. You can alter to fi t other arch sizes, but we don’t recommend going smaller than 54” wide, because the fl at sections would have to be too small to be attractive. Alterations could be considered diffi cult for inexperienced people. The jabot pattern is made and attached separately. It has no return. There is a return on the valance. For installation 6 holdbacks are needed. The valance will tie (or use an elastic loop) to the holdbacks.

The valance consists of three separate fl at sections. Each sec-tion has an optional cuff that is sewn to the top and fl ips over to expose the contrast lining. The decorative tails are also op-tional. The decorative tails hang about 19” and 24” deep. They have no return. For installation, 4 holdbacks are needed. The valance will tie (or use an elastic loop) to the holdbacks. It is not recommended that you use this pattern for sizes smaller than 46” because the side sections will hang at an inappropri-ate angle. You cannot add or take away sections on the arched window.

Portfolio Collection Asked for by designer’s!! PC-1$219.95

For many years, designers have asked that we provide a book that gives them all of the same designs and cover sheets that are in our popular “Designer’s Digest & Workroom Manual”, but without the workroom in-structions.

This collection contains 575 pages, with over 550 designs.

A CD is also included.

PART 1 contains photographs or sketches of every pattern package of-fered by M’Fay Patterns at the time this book went to press. Complete yardage requirements are on the back of these pages. The three ring notebook will enable you to remove pages as needed, to show your client or to have convenient at your desk.

The design sketches in PART 2 may be achieved by mixing various patterns together. Some of the designs don’t need patterns. Information on the back of these pages will direct you as to which patterns (if any) are involved. In many cases it gives information the designer needs to know. When the words “Special instructions apply”, those instructions are more detailed and are found in the “Designer’s Digest and Workroom Manual”.

PART 3 is general information that may help the designer to plan, measure, and communicate with the workroom.

Additions will be published every 18 to 24 months, which will include the latest window treatment designs as well as more PART 3 information. Future additions are not included in the price of this book.
