Entering his fourth season at the helm of the women’s basketball program, head coach Dan Davis is as excited about this year’s team as any he has coached. Despite having to replace two career 1,000-point scorers in Haley McIntyre and Carlie Ainsworth, as well as the leadership that each brought to the team on a daily basis, Davis thinks the Warhawks have pieces in place to return to the team conten-tion in the competitive Southern States Athletic Conference standings and to the NAIA National Tournament. “Losing the experience and leadership that Haley and Carlie brought to our team will be tough to replace,” Davis said. “We spend a lot of time trying to develop our players into leaders, and combined with the lessons they learned from those two great players (McIntyre and Ainsworth), I feel like we have a team full of leaders returning.” This season’s team returns seven letterwin-ners and welcomes eight newcomers to AUM’s campus. In their returners, the Warhawks bring back nearly half of their scoring, 42 percent of their rebounds and better than 62 percent of their assists. The strength of the team returning comes is in the backcourt, where senior Courtney Thacker, as well as juniors Kamesha Strong and Stephanie Torrence will compete for starting spots. Seniors Areial Woods and Haley Williams and junior Candace Dyer will provide depth at the position, while sophomore newcomer Keisha Moore and freshman Jazmine Jackson will also compete for signifi cant playing time. “I think we are really quick on the perime-ter,” Davis said. “I think our guards will be able to get into the paint and really create oppor-tunities for themselves, as well as for our post

players. We have several key players returning, along with two talented newcomers, who will continue to make our guard-play one of the strengths of our team.” Junior Caitie Cunningham is the lone member of the frontcourt returning, but will be pushed quickly by six newcomers, all standing 6-0 or taller. Joining Cunningham up front are junior college transfers LaKenya Drayton, Matika Sterling and Ashley deVries, along with freshmen Marren Schwartz, Tina Odume and Kayla Beaty. “Last season, we struggled with depth at the post position, but I think we addressed that with our signing class,” Davis said. “We tried to bring in players who have the strength and size to play the ‘high-low’ style that we want to play. I think we did a good job of turning our weakness last season into a potential strength for this year.”

BACKCOURT Despite returning six guards from last season’s team, the Warhawks will rely heavily on the experience and leadership of Thacker and Strong, both of which have started for the majority of their career. Thacker was forced to play out of position last season, yet still managed career-highs with 8.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest. “Courtney exemplifi es all the qualities we look for in a player,” Davis said. ”She has a team-fi rst mentality and works hard every

day. She is back in her natural position out on the perimeter and has really improved her defense. Last year, she had her best season with our program and we are expecting her to increase her production this season.” Strong led the team with 78 assists and averaged 3.7 points per game, but will be expected to increase her production as a scorer this season. “Kamesha was a unanimous selection to be a team captain, so her teammates know she is going to bring it every day in practice and in every game,” Davis said. “She has worked

hard to improve her level of play, especially on the offensive end of the court. She usually doesn’t fi nish with a fancy stat line, but no player is more valuable to our team on the fl oor than her.” Perhaps the most talented returning player for AUM, Torrence enjoyed a break-out season as a sophomore, averaging 8.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. A potent offensive player, Torrence matched an AUM season-high with 29 points against Belhaven, hitting seven 3-point-ers, one off the school record. ”Stephanie is probably our most talented offensive guard,” Davis added. “She paid her dues the past two seasons playing behind Carlie and I really think she is due for a break-through season. She knows what we expect and what our program is about, so it is her time to shine. She has to be committed to playing every possession of both ends of the court, but has the ability to do that and will be a leader for our team.” Woods will also factor into the rotation in the backcourt, after starting 12 games in her fi rst season with the Warhawks, averaging 4.6 points and 2.2 rebounds per contest. “Areial saw good action last season and will be a much-improved player for us this season,” Davis said. “She has had a year to learn our system and worked extremely hard this sum-mer to become more effi cient with her left hand. In the short time we have practiced this preseason, you can tell she has elevated her game on both ends of the court.” Also factoring into the equation are Williams and Dyer, both of which made contributions last season. “Haley understands and embraces our system,” Davis said. “She understands that she doesn’t have to do too much, yet is a good enough shooter to contribute offensively. She bought into our philosophy and leads by ex-ample and vocally in practice. She is unselfi sh

and cares only about the team winning. No one on our team will out-work her.” “Candace showed some positive signs at the end of last season,” Davis continued. “She has a tenacious work ethic and is a great leader on our team. She is probably the most respected player on our team.” Joining the team for their fi rst season with the program is Moore and Jackson. Moore, a high-school teammate of Strong at Selma High School, spent last season playing for Tennessee Tech University, where she helped the Golden Eagles to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

“Keisha should be a lock-down defender for our team,” Davis said. “She will likely be asked to guard the opposition’s best player and I think she will succeed at doing that. She is long and athletic and moves well on the court. Offen-sively, she is very skilled and has the talent to be our leading scorer.” Jackson also joins the program following a strong prep career at Brookwood High School in Snellville, Ga. “Jaz played for one of the top teams in Georgia last season, so I know she is a winner,” Davis said of Jackson. “She has the skill set to play both guard positions, but I envision her as more of a point guard for us. She will need to adjust to not being the top option in the offense like she was in high school and to the speed of the college game, but I expect her to have a nice career at AUM.”

FRONTCOURT The AUM frontcourt will feature plenty of new faces, as the unit returns only Cunning-ham from last season. Cunningham saw action in 28 games as a sophomore, averaging 2.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per contest. “Caitie has been a nice surprise this pre-season,” Davis said. “I think she is comfortable with the system, having spent the last two seasons in it. She is a tremendous rebounder on both ends of the fl oor and has the tools to contribute in an added role to our team this season.” The Warhawks will also welcome a trio of junior college forwards and three former prep standouts to its rotation, with each bringing an added dimension to the post position. LaKenya Drayton and Ashley deVries were teammates at Snead State Community College in Boaz, Ala., the past two seasons, and will each bring an experienced, physical presence inside. “I think Kenya will be a great addition to our team,” Davis said. “She came into camp a little out of shape, but has worked hard on her condition. She is an intelligent player, with great size and strength, who I think can be a very good post player in our league. I have high expectations for Kenya this season.” “Ashley is one of our best passing post play-ers,” Davis continued. “She needs to continue to get in better shape and improve her offense. She has very good size and will work hard in-side, battling for rebounds and looking to block shots. She has established that she will be a key contributor for our team.” Also joining the program from the JUCO ranks is Sterling, who averaged 9.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game last season at Chat-tahoochee Valley Community College in Phenix City, Ala. “Matika is very athletic and will bring a dimension to our team that we have been lacking the past couple seasons,” Davis said. “Her playing time will depend on how quickly she grasps our system, both offen-sively and defensively. The tools are there and she is heading in the right direction.” The Warhawks also feature Schwartz,

Odume and Beaty in the frontcourt, all of whom enjoyed highly-decorated prep careers. Davis feels all three will have successful careers at AUM, with Schwartz and Odume factoring into the rotation as early as this season. Schwartz comes to AUM from George Walton Academy in Monroe, Ga., where she averaged a double-double her fi nal two seasons. “Marren brings a great skill set to our team and is also a physical presence on the fl oor,” Davis continued. “She is very driven and has a desire to be a big part of our team this season. She will have to adjust to the speed of college basketball, but has the ability to overcome that transition.” Odume brings a strong presence on both ends of the court, as she averaged 14.5 points, 10.4 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game as a senior at South Gwinnett High School in Snell-ville. “Tina is a big, strong player, but is very raw,” Davis said. “She has the ability to give us some quality minutes this season, but will have to continue to improve on both ends of the court. I think she got away with a lot of things in high school because of her size and needs to become more disciplined. However, she is strong and physical and will be very tough on the block.” Beaty was a fi ve-time all-area and all-region selection at Ider High School in Ider, Ala., but will need to continue to adjust to the speed of the college game. However, Davis thinks Beaty has the tools to be a signifi cant contributor for the Warhawks in the future. “Kayla has the potential to be a nice player for us,” Davis said. “She has the quickness, ability and work ethic to contribute, but has to continue to improve her fundamentals and be-come better acclimated to the college game.”

Beginning his fourth season at the helm of the Auburn University at Mont-gomery women’s basketball program, Dan Davis has only built on the tradition established by his predecessors. In three seasons as head coach, Davis has led the Warhawks to the NAIA Tournament, helped the team win nearly 60 percent of its games and earned Southern States Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors. During his time at the helm, Davis has also coached one All-American player, six SSAC All-Conference performers and one SSAC All-Freshman team member. Last season, Davis helped AUM to a 14-16 overall record and a 5-7 mark in conference play. The Warhawks fi nished just one game shy of a tie for second place in the SSAC West Division and had two all-division players, as well as six All-Academic selections. Four student-athletes also earned NAIA Scholar Athlete honors. AUM also fi nished tied for second in the conference and seventh nationally in 3-point fi eld goal percentage defense. In the classroom, the Warhawks sported a team grade point average of better than 3.0 for the third time in as many years. During the 2009-10 campaign, Davis guided AUM to a 15-15 record and a tie for fourth place in the SSAC standings. Highlight-ing the season was a 73-49 thrashing of perennial conference powerhouse, Lee University, only AUM’s third victory against the Lady Flames in 15 tries. In addition, Cassie Moore became the 23rd AUM player to earn All-America status, earning honorable mention honors, while also being named the SSAC’s Defensive Player of the Year. In his fi rst season, Davis served as interim head women’s basketball coach and led the Warhawks to a NAIA National Tournament appearance and a 20-9 overall record. Under his leadership, AUM led the SSAC in scoring defense and 3-point fi eld goal percentage, while ranking second in fi eld goal percentage, defensive fi eld goal percentage and defensive 3-point fi eld goal percentage. Moore earned Third-Team All-American honors, while the Warhawks fi nished the season ranked 25th in the nation. Along with success on the court, the Warhawks have also excelled in the classroom under Davis, as seven student-athletes have been named NAIA Academic All-Americans and 15 have earned SSAC Academic All-Conference honors. The women’s basketball pro-gram has also had the AUM Honor Student-Athlete during two of the last three seasons and has posted a team GPA of 3.0 or better during six semesters under Davis. Davis also spent one season as the Warhawks’ assistant coach under now Athletic Director Steve Crotz. As the assistant coach, Davis served as the recruiting coordinator and provided assistance in all areas of individual and team development. Prior to joining AUM, Davis spent fi ve years at Providence Christian Academy in Lilburn, Ga., as the head coach of the girls’ bas-ketball team from 2002-07. During his time with PCA, Davis coached seven all-county and all-region performers, two all-state players and one region player of the year. He helped the Stars to a 65-63 overall record during his tenure, while also serving as the school’s athletic director from 2005-07. Davis has also made coaching stops at South Gwinnett High School in Snellville, Ga., where he was head coach of the boys’ junior varsity basketball team and Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga., where he was head coach of the boys’ basketball varsity squad. Along with his coaching duties, Davis serves as AUM’s Champions of Character coordinator. He is also very involved in the communi-ty, as well as professional organizations, including the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, YMCA, American Red Cross and Christ Community Church. He has directed numerous youth camps and has been on staff at camps hosted by the University of Tennessee, University of Georgia and Florida State University. Before joining the coaching ranks, Davis was a four-year member of the AUM men’s basketball team, playing for legendary War-hawks’ Head Coach Larry Chapman. During his AUM career, the Senators played in the NAIA National Tournament, won the NAIA Southeast Region and were the Southern States Conference Champions. Davis graduated from AUM in 1999 with a degree in second-ary education and social sciences. Davis is married to the former Christi Shirley. The couple has two children, Abigail and Cooper.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITYAuburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature. This action resulted from the request of the citizens of the Montgomery area to estab-lish an additional degree-granting institution to serve Mont-gomery and the surrounding counties. The fi rst classes were offered in September 1969. A 500-acre tract on the east side of Montgomery was purchased for the site of the new cam-pus. Two architectural fi rms developed the master plan for the new campus and designed the original buildings, which

were occupied in the fall of 1971. A broad-based academic institution, AUM is organized into fi ve schools: Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences, while the Air University Graduate Program and Division of Continu-ing Education offer additional educational opportunities. In 1973 AUM was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as an operationally separate institu-tion. In 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008, accreditation was reaffi rmed by the Southern Association.

MISSION STATEMENTAuburn University at Montgomery’s mission, as the metropolitan campus of Auburn University, a land-grant institution, is to foster and exemplify excellence in educa-tion through instruction, research, and service. Auburn

University at Montgomery blends the traditional views of the university as a community of scholars with the contemporary view of the university as an integral part of the surrounding community, state, and region. AUM provides academic pro-grams that are characteristic of the fi nest traditions of schol-arship and consistent with the responsibility of the university to provide support for the functions of government, regional economic growth, and cultural enrichment through the arts.

WHY CHOOSE AUBURN MONTGOMERY?Today’s economic crisis doesn’t have to cost you your college education. In addition, with chal-lenging classes and small class sizes, and Auburn Montgom-ery can provide you with an excellent education at a price you can afford.

BIG CAMPUS BENEFITS WITH A SMALL CAMPUS FEELWith programs of study in more than 90 areas, Auburn Mont-gomery’s courses run the gamut from accounting to sociol-ogy. We have sororities and fraternities for those who want to go Greek and numerous active clubs and organizations. Plus, your destination is never more than a fi ve-minute walk on campus.

FOUR-DAY WEEKSAt Auburn Montgomery, many students take classes just four days a week – Monday through Thursday – making it easier for them to work, get home on the weekends or even travel. But students also fi nd AUM can accommodate just about any schedule since classes are offered days, nights, weekends and online. We even offer a growing number of mini-term classes, allowing students to progress more rapidly.

CUTTING-EDGE PROGRAMSAuburn Montgomery’s Storage Area Network Center of Excel-lence teaches information technology students to manage networks that store vast quantities of digital data. One of only six such centers in the country, it has been extremely successful in placing graduates in rewarding high-tech jobs with companies like Unisys.

ATHLETIC EXCELLENCEWarhawks’ athletic teams have a championship reputation in NAIA Division I and Southern States Athletic Conferences sports. Our men’s tennis team is the reigning national cham-pion, while women’s tennis, men’s soccer, and men’s and women’s basketball have put forth standout performances in the past as well.

RECOGNIZED EXCELLENCEAuburn Montgomery is the consistent top choice of readers of the Montgomery Advertiser, who have named AUM the best local college for the past several years. Our School of Business ranks among the top 5 percent in the world and is ranked a “Best Business School” by The Princeton Review.

THE NEW WELLNESS CENTERThe 73,500-square-foot Wellness Center will be a facility that will give students more options for recreation, more space for club meetings, and a place for them to hang out when they are not in class. The center will house several wellness and fi tness amenities, including: a pool, healthy snack bar, weight room, aerobics room, running track, basketball courts and a rock climbing wall. The center is funded largely through the student activities fee. Additional funds for building and op-erating the center will be provided by the university, private donations, and memberships sold to AUM employees and alumni. Construction began February 2011, and the Wellness Center is slated to open Fall 2012.

Steve Crotz is currently in his fourth year as full-time athletic director at Auburn Montgomery, after serving two stints as the interim athletic director in 2000 and 2007. During his tenure, AUM teams have fl ourished, programs have been established, and facilities improved. Student-athletes have also been stalwarts in the community and excelled in the classroom. Under his guidance, eight of AUM’s 10 sports have spent time in their respective NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Polls and teams have won three national championships. In addition, 121 student-athletes

have earned All-Conference, All-Division or All-Freshman team honors, while 47 have garnered All-American honors. AUM has added a softball program, as well as men’s and women’s cross country programs, increasing its number of varsity sports to 10. The cross country team ran its fi rst meet in the Fall of 2011 and will compete in the Southern States Athletic Conference of the NAIA. Crotz has overseen several facility upgrades, including the renovation of the basketball gymnasium to include a section of 304 cushioned, chair-backed seats on the home side of the court, the building of a new state-of-the-art press box at the AUM Softball Complex and the re-surfacing of all 12 tennis courts at the AUM Tennis Complex. Upgrades to the Softball Complex will also include bleacher seating for more than 200 spectators directly behind home plate, restrooms, a concession stand, a press area and increased storage. In the classroom, student-athletes have been equally impressive, as 99 athletes have earned All-Academic honors from the SSAC and 32 have been named NAIA Scholar Athletes. Three AUM student-athletes, women’s basketball standouts Haley McIntyre and Carlie Ainsworth, and men’s basketball’s David Gallagher, have been named the SSAC Honor Student Athlete. Within the community, staff, coaches and student-athletes have logged better than 500 hours of service. Crotz has worked with the AUM administration to expand the athletic department staff to include a head and assistant softball coach and an athletic trainer. He has also spent the past two years serving as the chair of the Board of Athletic Directors within the Southern States Athletic Conference. For his efforts during the 2010-11 academic year, Crotz was selected the SSAC Athletic Director of the Year. Before focusing on administration, Crotz served 12 seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn Montgomery. Crotz compiled a record of 284-116 while at AUM, winning four regular season conference championships, two conference tournament titles, and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament 10 times. Crotz was a 10-time conference/region coach of the year and was named the Ikon/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year following his team’s national runner-up fi nish for the 1999-00 season. Prior to AUM, Crotz spent fi ve years as athletic director and six years as head women’s basketball coach at Lindenwood University. While at LU, Crotz earned 126 wins and led the Lady Lions to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances. During his six years at the St. Charles, Mo., institution, he was named American Midwest Conference Coach of the Year on four occasions. In October 2009, he was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame. Crotz also spent nine years at Brentwood High School overseeing the girls’ basketball program and winning 210 games. Five times during that span he led Brentwood to the Missouri State Tournament where they won the state tournament in 1985 and fi nished as runners-up in 1986 and 1990. For his efforts, Crotz was named the Missouri High School Coach-of-the-Year in 1985. Crotz received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Missouri in 1979 and his master’s degree in secondary education from Missouri-St. Louis in 1984. He and his wife, the former Daphne Hozee, reside in Montgomery with their two children, Kelsey and Jacob.

The 2011-12 academic year marks the 12th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). In 2010, the conference an-nounced an expansion and now showcases 15 member institu-tions located throughout the Southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsors 13 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. The conference is led by Dr. Kurt Patberg, who became the commissioner in March of 2008. The conference staff also features a Sports Information Director, Greg Black; a Director of Marketing and Operation, Jonathan Wojciechowski; a Director of Communications, Heather Kirksey; and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Richard Cowan. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Ogletho-rpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the offi cial name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of com-petition, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member institutions. Since the conference’s inception and affi liation with the NAIA, 23 SSAC teams and 11 indi-viduals have claimed national titles, while 22 teams have fi nished national runners-up. Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athlet-ics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 35 years, AUM has claimed 20 national championships and six of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institu-tional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering fi rst-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affi rmed its commitment to equality by becoming the fi rst national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institu-tions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting aca-demic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach be-

yond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the fi ve core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefi t of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s com-mitment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Last year, AUM was one of 220 schools recognized as a Five Star institution after earning 80 points on a 100-point scale, the 42nd-best total in the country.

WARHAWKS IN THE COMMUNITY

Just as important as success on the court and in the classroom, giving back to the community has always been a key philosophy of the Auburn University at Montgomery women’s basketball team. The success on the court is evident. Beginning its 24th year of existence, AUM has made 18 NAIA National Tournament appearances, won 70.7 percent of its games and had 23 All-American selections. In the classroom, the Warhawks consistently fi nish semesters with a team cumulative grade point aver-age of better than 3.0. During the 2011 spring semester, the women’s basketball team had eight players earn a 3.0 GPA, including three with a perfect 4.0. AUM had six student-athletes named to the 2010-11 Southern States Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. The women’s basketball team has also earned two of the three AUM Honor Student-Athlete awards, sponsored by the SSAC. But the component of the Warhawks’ philosophy that is often overlooked is the way the team gives back. During the past year, the women’s basketball program has participated in a variety of events in the community, benefi tting citizens of all ages. One of the most popular events the Warhawks participate in is the annual Make a Difference Day. Dur-ing the event, players and coaches interact with local youth, reading books and doing various activities with children at the Molina Learning Center in Montgomery. Along with reading to the children, members of the team also help the center’s students pick out books for their own personal library. The team works with AUM professor Dr. Nancy Anderson on the project. Another is the Angels for the Elderly project, through which the team spends time with the elderly most Fridays throughout the year. During a two-hour visit, members of the team enjoy doing activities with members, including reading, playing dominos, making arts and crafts and singing. The team also held a one-day clinic for members of the Prattville YMCA, at which they taught basketball fundamentals and life skills to more than 40 local youth. During the holiday season, the Warhawks were active in the Montgomery Sheriff’s Department’s Christmas for Kids campaign. They also participated in the Martin Luther King Day of Service at the Molina Learning Center, where members of the team made read-ings of King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech for students and helped clean the grounds of the complex. The team also spent a day reading to students at Blount Elementary School and the First United Methodist Church’s Early Childhood Development Center. Recently, members of the team helped AUM students move into the residence halls and spearheaded AUM’s fi rst blood drive of the year as part of its partnership with the NAIA Leadership Program. The women’s team also sponsored the 12th annual Warhawk Challenge in late September, where 129 runners participated. The event consists of a 5K race and a one-mile fun race, with all proceeds from the event being split between the women’s basketball program and the AUM Wellness Program.
