MESSAGE FROM THE DIREC TOR OF ATHLETICS & RECREATION

With the 2011-12 athletic season coming to a close, we gather to celebrate, recognize and applaud the achievements of our many student-athletes, clubs and programs. It has been a challenging year of competition and gatherings such as the Colour Awards provide the opportunity to reflect upon the season and the commitment, perseverance, teamwork and accomplishment that made 2011-2012 another successful year.

For those of you receiving awards this evening, congratulations on the accolades you have earned - the strength of competition within our program makes your accomplishments all the more impressive. For all of you, thank you for what you have contributed this year to the Queen's spirit and the culture of sport that adds to the values and traditions of our campus.

To our student-leaders, coaches and support staff, thank you for your remarkable dedication and leadership to your respective teams, the programs could not thrive the way they do without your commitment to them. This past year we hosted numerous Varsity Club competitions as well as two OUA Championships in Golf and Men's Fencing. Queen's has established itself as a top host and we are very proud of the collective efforts of our teams and our program/facility staff in fostering this reputation.

Many of you will be graduating this year and I wish you the best of luck going forward in your future endeavours. I hope that your time at Queen's reminds you of proud memories and lifetime friendships. As our newest alumni, I encourage all of you to remain engaged with your respective programs and to support future generations who wear the tricolour as they continue the athletic legacy you have built.

Congratulations on another successful season! In 2011-2012, you maintained the storied Queen's tradition of athletic success as our Varsity Clubs continued to post top results both on and off the competition surface! With so many teams and individuals celebrating victories, your performances this year have ensured that the tricolour will be well represented among the top performers in your respective sports for many years to come.

As student-athletes you embody the Queen's spirit and show it when you compete in your chosen sport. It is my pleasure to thank you for the successes of this year and I am looking forward to next season with great enthusiasm.

To our returning athletes, I hope you come back next year with an even greater desire to improve upon your results this season while pushing your friends and teammates to new heights. To our graduates, I wish you the best of luck going forward and hope that your time as a member of the Gaels made your time at Queen's truly special.

I would also like to recognize the time and effort put in by Sport Clubs and Camps Coordinator, Lisa Eyles. Her hard work and dedication continues to be the driving force behind the victories we enjoy. Without her efforts, we would not have the outstanding program we are grateful to be a part of.

SEASON REC APThe Queen's University baseball team was faced with the challenge of rebuilding this year, having lost 11 stalwart players from last season. Despite this obstacle, the team forged ahead in the highly competitive OUA.

The 2011 Gaels made great strides as a program from a season ago despite difficulty closing out victories on the scoresheet. The rejuvinated offense was far more potent, adding pop from newcomers such as Jeff Skelhorne-Gross, Christopher Stewart, Justin Firth and Matt Reagan. Again, on the mound, fresh faces led the way including Jeremy McDonald, Ryan Abraham as well as Reagan. But the highlight of the year was a two-hit shutout hurled by veteran southpaw Robbie Libman beating Waterloo and, ultimately, playing spoiler by keeping them out of the playoffs.

Other tremendous games included a 13-inning one run-loss, that included 8 innings of 1-earned-run ball by Abraham, to eventual chamption UofT and a 2-2 record at the annual Queen's Alumni Tournament. With a year of experience under their belts, there is no telling how much this team can achieve in 2013.

SEASON REC APThe competitive cheerleading team started the season in May selecting 27 athletes and two new head coaches. The team trained throughout the summer in Kingston and travelled to UCA Cheerleading Camp in Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA to train alongside American college teams.

Upon returning, additional members were added to complete the roster of 36. people, the biggest team Queen’s has ever had. First semester was filled with intense training for National Championships in December, where they placed third in their large co-ed division.

After some rest and relaxation over the Christmas break, they came back at their second National Championship competition winning first place in their division and earning the title of “Grand Champions”.

This was a great way to end off their season and for many of them, their careers. Can’t wait to see what next year brings for the Gaels!

SEASON REC APQueen's Curling went into the 2011/12 season looking to improve on the results from last season, but unfortunately came out on the wrong side of the inch in one too many games.

The men finished 5th in their pool with a 3-3 record, behind a 4-team logjam for first place at 4-2. All of their losses were by a single point, including an extra end loss to Laurentian in their first game of the week. Every member of the team is returning to Queen's for next year, and are looking forward to working together for greater success next season.

The women finished 6.th in their pool with a 2-4 record. Their losses against both Brock and McMaster came on last rock, within a finger's reach of victory. The Queen's women graduate players Katie Robinson and Tracy Auld and wish them the best of luck next year; while the remaining 4 have started to prepare for next year’s championship.

SEASON REC APAfter graduating much of last year's team, this season was an important year of rebuilding for the Queen's cycling team. With the addition of 23 new rookies the team was given a huge task. They were not only able to rebuild, but work together to take the top position in the university cup for a second year in a row. Having tied with Guelph for the overall championship last year the team achieved their goal of being the sole provincial champions of 2011-12.

With strong riders in all four categories there was great hope for the season. At the first race, spanning two days at Mansfield Ont., the team showed their strength by taking the overall points lead. At the races to follow they continued to increase their lead over Guelph and Toronto even despite losing a women's 'A' rider to injury.

Men's 'A' had another great year with Etienne Moreau earning two first place finishes and coming second overall while Jon Slaughter came third overall. In women's 'A' Haley Smith never lost a race claiming the overall victory in her first year on the team and Victoria Giangrande placed second overall. Brennan Berardo came out midseason for the Queen's team placing first and second in men's 'B' and Eric Armstrong took third place overall in this category. Kassia Blattner, Jennifer Campbell and Nicky Pacas all had several top three finishes with Kassia Blattner taking second overall.

SEASON REC APThe Gaels fastpitch team had a season of ups and downs from the first week of the season as they played their way to a 6.-12 record.

Despite tough competition against their opponents and the elements, the Gaels alternated weekends of wins with tight series losses to the top teams in the province. After dropping both games in the opening weekend of the season to Brock and McMaster, the team bounced back with four points in week two thanks to weekend victories over Guelph before dropping a pair of games to Toronto. They split both gamedays during week three to come away with four points in games against Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier.

Weeks four and five brought about tough weather and an even tougher pair of series for the Gaels as they were rained out each weekend against Windsor and Carleton respectively before dropping doubleheaders to Western and Ottawa.

Big performers for the team this season included Shannon Rauh-Wasmund, Amelia Keech, Chloe Boynton, Kayla Forbes and Julia Duszczyszyn who all put up big single game performances over the course of the season.

SEASON REC APThe challenge was to retain their championship record in an enlarged field of 11 universities. Under the new OUA sport model, York and Ottawa participated in the OUAs and took gold medals. Yet the Gaels prevailed. The men’s team, hosting the OUA championship, seized the banner for the second consecutive year in an unprecedented tie-breaker against the University of Toronto. The women’s team fought strongly to take third place in their championship at Brock.

This championship record capped a season of medals. Men’s sabreur François Beaucage-Gauvreau won gold at the Queen’s and Brock Open competitions, and at the RMC Team Invitational with teammates Jimmy Wintle and Will Tran. Also at the RMC Invitational, Women’s Épeé (Laura Bartha, Janice Lao, and rookies Janelle Yu and Veronica Ibarra) handily took the bronze medal from Canada’s military games (CISM) team, allowing Queen’s to retain third place in the RMC cup ranking. Beaucage-Gauvreau also won bronze at the Ottawa Shield. Karl Gardner (épeé) took silver in at the Brock Open. Janice Lao (épeé) won gold and Dean Loubert (foil) bronze at the Newmarket competition; and Men’s Sabre (Jimmy Wintle, Will Tran, George Huang) won bronze at the Carleton Invitational without their lead fencer.

Queen’s Fencers are grateful to alumni, parents, and friends for donations that support athletic financial awards, travel, and equipment.

SEASON REC APThe Queen’s Field Hockey team had a challenging season with many close matches. The season felt too short for the team who finally began to adapt to the new style of play and reach their potential towards the end of the season. In their final games, the girls demonstrated a quality of play that bodes extremely well for future success at the OUA and national level.

The veterans came into their own, building both their strength and confidence in the process. This season marked the beginning of the Queen’s careers of a very promising rookie class as well. International representation from Scotland and Northern Ireland brought new perspective to the team. The team looks forward to taking advantage of these newfound international connections for tours in future years. Thank you to graduating players for their hard work and dedication to the team throughout their careers, both on and off the field. The team benefited and learned from their commitment to all aspects of the program, setting a great foundation for moving forward.

The girls played with a fierce young strength and are working hard to come out flying, alongside promising recruits, in the 2012/2013 season.

The team had many inspiring performances at the OUA Championship. Renee Tse and Charlotte MacDonald (Co-Captain) earned first place in Intermediate Similar Pairs. They combined their superb abilities with Martha Carruthers (Team MVP) and Nicole Grenon to take first place in Pairs Four, all of whom earned OUA All-Star status. Renee also came in second in Senior Silver Free Skate. Co-Captain and OUA All-Star, Emily Young (Team MVP), performed flawlessly to win the Open Solo Dance. She also skated to a second place finish with Gwendolyn Eadie (Team MIP) in Creative Dance with a program that garnered praise from spectators. Emily and Gwen also pooled their talents together with Kelsey Keane (Synchro Captain) and Megan Van Den Akker to finish second in the Bronze Rhythm Dance. Elizabeth Liao (Team Rookie-of-the-Year) skated beautifully in Open Free Skate and placed second.

The team bids a fond farewell to three graduates this year. Daniel Chung (Team MIP), Martha Carruthers and Emily Young. The team would like to wish them all the very best in the future.

SEASON REC APThe women’s golf team went through a tough season losing Justice Durland and Nina Wan who both withdrew from the team due to a heavy school schedule. They hope to have them back next year. This left Captain Hailey Ingleson with a complete rookie team. Their second player in all events was Karen MacKay an exchange student from Scotland who was a pleasant surprise. Making up the rest of the team for the OUA Championship was Jennifer Kates and Alexandra Rawn. The Gaels hosted the 2011 OUA Championship at Loyalist Golf Club. Another year's experience should make for a better 2012.

The men's OUA Championship was hosted by Queen’s at the Cataraqui Golf Club. The 16. team event was won by Waterloo with Queen’s finishing in 2nd place. It was Queen’s best showing for the season. Russell Bowie earned first team all-star status and Matt Courchene earned second team all-star status.

The men's team qualified to play in Golf Canada’s Canadian University/College Championship hosted by the University of Victoria at the Cordova Golf Club in Victoria B.C. at the end of May 2012.

SEASON REC APThe Men’s Lacrosse team managed to compete with some of the top teams in the league, keeping pace in most games up until the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Despite being unable to register a win, the team - which welcomed 16. rookies to the roster this season - now contains a dedicated core that shows promise for years to come. The rookie class contained three capable goalies who proved they were capable of making exceptional saves in order to keep their team in games.

Ian Curry was named honourable mention for East Division All-Canadian after a successful year in the faceoff circle as one of the league’s top face off specialists, forcing opposing teams to alter strategies to account for his success. Ryan Zoehner was also named an honourable mention for East Division All-Canadian for manning the defensive end of the field with strong leadership and stick skills. This year was a break-out year for a few players, to highlight a few; rookie Marc Santos was a dominant force on both ends of the field as a skilled two way midfield and Nate Kerstens transitioned into a dominant long-stick midfielder with his exceptional shutdown and ball carrying abilities.

The team was led by a committed group of veterans which included: Steve Brake, Andre Degagne, Brendan Gibbs, Kevin Harper and Braden Hergott who showed dedication and instilled a strong work ethic into the program.

SEASON REC APThe Gaels once again won Bronze at the OUA Championship in Guelph. The regular season started with a disappointing loss to U of T in the inaugural game on the new West Campus field and improved from there. Overall, the season was 6.-5-1 with 119 goals for and 91 against as Queen’s ranked 4th in the OUA. Western continues to be a nemesis as the Gaels haven’t beat them in just over two seasons.

The OUA Championship played out in identical fashion to one season ago. Queen's faced McMaster in the quarterfinals and won handily. That win advanced the Gaels to the semifinals against Western where they lost. The Bronze medal game against Toronto saw the Varsity Blues score first but Queen’s charged back, led by freshman Teresa Mayo’s three goals and a diligent defense led by Darcy Vidler. The final score was 10 – 6..

Over the season, forward Jackie Byers (player/coach) led the team with 34 goals and 50 points, followed by Teresa Mayo with 28 and 35 and forward Marsha Cryderman (co-captain with Mary-Michelle Bolland) with 20 and 25.

The Gaels graduate five players this year and will miss Byers and Vidler, who both won OUA All-Star team awards, as well as mid-field Gwyneth Ross (player/coach), and forwards Nicole Allen and Jess Allum. The team thanks them for their years of hard work and wishes them continued success.

SEASON REC APThe Nordic Ski team had a strong 2011-2012 season, with 11 experienced skiers selected to compete on the race team. There were 20 skiers who trained hard on the development team. Kingston had one weekend of snow this winter, and the team was able to take advantage of the conditions by racing a 10 km time trial in City Park.

The team began training six times a week in early October, and competed in seven races over three weekends on the road. Race results were very consistent, and overall the team’s speed and racing caliber improved from last year. At the North Bay university invitational, Julie McVicar had a top five finish, and at the OUA championship she came in 11th in the women’s 10 km skate with a time of 32:45.

Brett Weersink is competing in March at the Canadian National Championships in Mont St.-Anne, Quebec. Head coach Haley Robinson is graduating from Queen’s this year. Next year’s head coach will be Weersink, who is a race team veteran and experienced leader.

SEASON REC APThis year the Queen’s Sailing Team (QST) had an exceptional season. Along with the regular regattas in the American Mid Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA), QST joined the Canadian Intercollegiate Sailing Association (CIC Sailing) for its inaugural Season.

QST was by far one of the strongest teams in CIC Sailing and won the Team Race Championship hosted at home at the Kingston Yacht Club and the Fleet Race Championship hosted by McGill. QST faired well in MAISA as well with many strong finishes. Once again the team was only a couple points short of qualifying for the WAR memorial Trophy.

Single handed sailors Evert McLaughlin and Matthew Ryder placed one-two at laser North to qualify QST for the Carl Van Duyne Trophy. The keelboat team improved upon last year’s result and placed in the top ten at the Strom Trysail Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta.

Overall it was a season full of ups and downs. The team would like to thank Coach Stephen Waldie for all his hard work and guidance. As well they would like to send a big thank you out to all the members of the Alumni Booster Club and the Kingston Yacht Club for all their help and support over the past season. They wouldn’t have been able to do what they did this season without you.

SEASON REC APThe Queen's Men's Squash Team had a very successful 2011-12 season. The first tournament was the Jesters Eastern Sectional at McGill with Queen's winning all of their match-ups. Newcomer Lee Davey, playing at No. 6., won all of his matches and began to show the form that carried him to the No. 3 spot on the team at the OUA Championships. The next competition was the Jesters Crossover Tournament that was held in Toronto. Queen's beat Toronto and Waterloo, but lost to Western, the perennial OUA powerhouse, and McMaster. As a result of these two tournaments, Queen's was seeded third out of seven teams going into the Canadian Jesters University Squash Championships. Queen's win against Waterloo put them into the semi-finals against McMaster who beat Queen's 4-2 at the Crossover. This time around, Queen's and McMaster won three matches each but Queen's lost the tie-breaker on games. Queen's then beat Toronto in the 3-4 playoff to take the bronze medal.

The final event of the season was the OUA Squash Championship held at Toronto. Queen's went into the tournament seeded No. 2 on the basis of its silver medal performance in the 2010-2011 season. In pool play Queen's managed to avenge its earlier losses to McMaster by winning a thrilling tie-breaker on games. This together with their win over Brock put them into the semi-final match against Toronto. Here they had one of their best performances of the season, beating Toronto 5-1, which put them into the gold medal round against Western. Although many of the matches were extremely close, Western came out on top 6.-0 giving Queen's silver. In addition, Alex Ford, playing at No.1, received the bronze medal in the individual competition.

SEASON REC APQueens Women’s Squash Team finished the regular season with a promising record, beating three out of four opposing schools. However, going into the championship, Queen’s lost their captain and undefeated star player Heather Lamb.

The team rallied to overcome this obstacle with Most Valuable Player, Gwyn Ross and Co-Captain Alayna Bradd stepping up big with both their on court performance and leadership off-court. Queen's finished second in the Jesters championships after first winning a tight match against McGill in the semi-final, with the decider being won by No. 1 Erin Roberts in a thrilling five set match. They fought hard in the final, but they came away with only two wins, one of which came from a stellar performance by Rookie of the Year, Emily Peebles.

Unfortunately, the OUA Championship did not go the Gaels way, and they finished in a disappointing fifth place.

Other notable performances throughout the season came from Queens Squash’s oldest rookie ever, Erin Smith, and powerhouse Allegra Courtright.

SEASON REC APThe 2011 – 2012 season saw many exciting changes for the Gaels swim team, the first and foremost being their new partnership with local swim team the Kingston Blue Marlins. This merge reunited veteran coach Ken Anderson with the Gaels resulting in a new training program that ultimately saw every swimmer drop time.

Coaching staff also included enthusiastic rookie coaches Kiersten Wollenzien and Mark Kellenberger with Heidi Shallow returning for her third year with the team.

Swimming solidly from September until February the Gaels competed in meets in Ottawa, Guelph, St. Catharine’s with the season culminating in a fantastic OUA Championship in Sudbury from February 9 – 11. Captaining the squad this year were Tanner Cassidy, Courtney Semkuley and Shahira Ishak who oversaw five Gaels placing in the top 16. with multiple second swims in finals and major points scored in relays.

Overall the Men and Women placed ninth and 10th respectively and together their combined score saw them finish ninth overall, improving over previous years. Every swimmer had a stand-out swim and two managed to break long standing team records: rookie Edison Jyang in 100m fly and third year Shahira Ishak in the 100m free.

SEASON REC APThis year, the Queen's Synchro team was joined by 17 new swimmers, becoming the largest club in the Canadian University Synchro League with 32 registrants. Starting off their competition strong at the McGill Invitational in November, the Queen's Novice team placed third, the competitive duet placed fourth, the Red team finished eighth, and the Blue team and Yellow team earned sixth and fifth place finishes.

In January, the club hosted a watershow as a fundraiser for travel funds, which was a great success. The following weekend, at the Eastern Canadian Divisionals, the Novice team again earned third place while the duet finished in fourth. In the team competition, the Red, Yellow, and Blue teams placed in 12th, fifth, and fourth overall, respectively.

The CUSSL Nationals in February were held in western Canada for the first time ever, and Queen's Novice, Blue, and Yellow teams travelled to Calgary to compete against teams from across Canada. In the novice category, Queen's placed fourth overall. The Queen's Blue team earned seventh place in the competitive team event, while the Queen's Yellow team finished third in Canada, earning Queen's Synchro a bronze medal.

In the CUSSL, captain Alex Cross was nominated for the Anne Smeeton Award for her outstanding contributions to the university synchro league.

SEASON REC APThis season the men’s side was led by veteran, captain, and multiple CIS Championship qualifier Michael Nishiyama. Supporting him were middle distance standouts Josh Potivin (who was returning to the team following recovery from injuries sustained in the spring of 2010), Michael Bentley (the number nine Queen’s performer all-time over 800m and a 2011 CIS qualifier in the 4x800m), and rookie Alex Hutton, the four of which went on to represent Queen’s at the 2012 CIS Championships in Winnipeg.

On the women’s side, captain Alecia Kallos led the way, after missing the 2010/11 season due to injury.

A group of 18 Gaels went on to meet team standards for participation in the OUA Championship, with Nishiyama (eighth over 6.00m and sixth over 1000m), Alecia Kallos (10th over 1000m), Josh Potvin (10th over 1000m), Jeff Costen (10th over 3000m), and the men’s 4x800 (Nishiyama, Potvin, Hutton, and Bentley—fourth) leading the way.

Five athletes qualified for the CIS Championships in Winnipeg the men’s 4x800m team (including alternate Jeff Mountjoy, who ultimately ran in place of a flu-ridden Michael Bentley), and Michael Nishiyama in the 1000m. Nishiyama entered the meet as the 10th ranked athlete, but equalled his sixth place OUA finish in his second best performance ever at the distance. The men’s 4x800, weakened by the loss of Bentley, finished ninth in their slowest performance of the year at the distance.

SEASON REC APQueen’s Triathlon has had another tremendous season this year. Coming off last year’s championship win expectations for the team have been high despite having a predominantly new squad.

The rookies have stepped up to fill the void left by many of the veterans and have done so with stellar results. Queen’s success began in January with two races at the University of Toronto picking up the majority of the medals in both events.

This success continued at Western in early March which saw the Gaels win six out of nine possible medals. The Triathlon team looks to keep their UMS winning streak alive in early April at the UMS Championship race. Congratulations to the entire team on an exceptional year!

SEASON REC APThe Men’s Ultimate team had a very strong season this fall, and developed as a team throughout the season. The season began slowly with a disappointing fifth place finish at the Canadian Eastern University Ultimate tournament, losing a tight game to Ottawa in the quarterfinals. The second team showed solid progress throughout the weekend, finishing ahead of most of the other B teams at the tournament. Both teams showed great developmental progress throughout practices leading up to Nationals.

The first team went an undefeated 7-0 leading up to the semifinal matchup against Toronto. The squad found themselves down a couple points with little time remaining, but rallied and tied the game up just in time, resulting in a universe point win, sending the team into the finals undefeated. We fought hard in the finals but an overpowering Manitoba team was too much. Tough loss aside, the squad captured the silver and were proud of what they accomplished this season as the best team in Ontario.

The second team also showed great improvement at Nationals, beating all the other B teams and taking a game against Brock’s A team, showing their true potential for next season.

SEASON REC APThe Women’s Ultimate team had an extremely successful season, starting at the Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championships, where they came in second place with a two point loss against the defending champions, the University of Ottawa.

The Women’s Ultimate team continued with their success by finishing top in their pool on the first day of Canadian University Ultimate Championships. By the end of the second day Queen’s suffered a tough loss to Western University; however, they entered quarter finals against the Gee-Gees and won their game by a single point. On the third day the Gaels won their semi-final against McMaster and then proceeded to the finals where they once again went head to head with the Western Mustangs. Despite being down 3-6. at the halftime the Gaels were able to make a strong comeback in the second half, winning the final 8-6..

In harsh weather conditions and fierce competition, Queen’s Women’s Ultimate went home with the national title.

SEASON REC APThe Gaels started their season well at the Carleton Invitational tournament in the preseason, despite missing the majority of their starters. The team boasted a balanced scoring attack throughout the season as a variety of players routinely contributed. Top scorers included rookies Jacob Miller, and Toby Gorman, as well as veterans Hugh Ragan, Ian Pinchin, and James Bickerton. As always the Gaels benefited from stellar goaltending from two of the best goalies in the OUA, Charles McClintok and Trevor Robinson. The Gaels traveled to Carleton for the OUA Championship and were knocked out of medal contention after losing a tough game to York. The Gaels placed an eventual sixth in the OUA standings. The team will be graduating veterans Matt Thompson, Riley Millington, Bliss Man, Michael Dalziel, and captain Ian Pinchin, all of whom will be missed. The Gaels hope to build from the strong core of younger players and emerging stars, and return to the top of OUA Water Polo

The men also had success out of the pool this season. During the month of November the team leant their faces to the cause of Movember- growing moustaches and raising money and awareness for health issues affecting men. While never being nationally ranked for water polo the Gaels were nationally ranked in the Movember standings, raising over $3,400 and finishing in the top 2,200 teams in the 2012 Movemeber campaign.

SEASON REC APThe women’s water polo team got off to a good start at the Carleton Invitational tournament in late September, finishing with one win and several close games against the strongest teams in the league. From there the team only improved, with veterans and rookies both contributing to the team’s overall success at the Queen’s tournament.

Captains Rebecca Love, Emily Ready and Marissa Robinson led the Gaels at the 2011 OUA Water Polo Championships held in Ottawa at the end of November. A crucial win against the Ottawa Gee-Gees landed the Gaels in the bronze medal game. Battling McMaster, Meredith Williams, Marissa Robinson and Judith Weist all tacked up goals, but it was not enough to beat the Marauders. It was a heartbreaking loss, with a final score of 4-3, earning the Queen’s team fourth place at the OUA Championship. Co-captain Marissa Robinson was the only Queen’s player to be named to the OUA All-Star team.

Strong contribution to the Gael’s scoring effort throughout the season included rookies Shannon Craig and Alexandra Watt. While co-captain/goalie Rebecca Love and Caroline MacLennan are graduating this spring, they leave behind an incredibly strong team for the 2012-13 season.

SEASON REC APFor the 2011-2012 Wrestling Season, the Queen’s varsity wrestling team competed in a number of tournaments, ending with the OUA Championship in the middle of February. Training paid off, with several wrestlers earning bronze, silver and gold at a number of different tournaments including Toronto, Junior Provincials and McMaster. While the OUA Championship did not go as well as hoped due to some unexpected injuries, the team showed great development from the beginning of the season.

Watching individuals overcoming obstacles and being willing to learn was inspiring. All of the team's dedicated rookies improved by leaps and bounds and though it did not always translate into medals at tournaments, the changes were apparent at both practice and in matches.

Rookies who impressed include Keenan Drury who won a match in his first tournament, Dylan Trebels who perfected his shoulder throw, Liz Wigle who earned bronze at Toronto, Adam McKenna who won his first match at the OUA Championship and Braden Warwick who earned silver at Junior Provincials.

On the veteran side, Kellie Heney won gold at Toronto, Alex Stevenson displayed his awesome speed and Kyle Smith demonstrated his agility. Yi Quan again proved her dedication to wrestling while Joel Smith, the senior veteran, was admired by the team for his passion.

JACK JARVIS TROPHY - VARSIT Y CLUB MALE ATHLETE OF YEARThe Jack Jarvis Trophy, presented in 196.3 by Queen's boxers in memory of their long-time coach. Awarded annually to a Varsity Club male student-athlete in his fourth or fifth year who best displays qualities of scholastic achievement, competitiveness, leadership, sportsmanship, dedication and exceptional contributions to his team. It was first presented by the boxers of Queen’s as a tribute to Jack Jarvis, who coached the Queen’s boxing team for 33 years.

MARION ROSS TROPHY - VARSIT Y CLUB FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEARThe Marion Ross Trophy, named in honour of Queen’s first athletic director, was presented by the Women’s P.H.E. Alumnae Association in 1981. Awarded annually to a Varsity Club female student-athlete in her fourth or fifth year who best displays qualities of scholastic achievement, competitiveness leadership, sportsmanship, dedication and exceptional contributions to her team.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR (OPY)The Outstanding Performance of the Year Trophy is presented annually to pay tribute to a student-athlete who has brought the most honour and recognition to Queen's University resulting from success in provincial, national and international competition in a twelve month period. Congratulations to our student-athletes, coaches and team support staff on a successful 2011-12 athletic season. There have been many highlights this year as we celebrate the outstanding performances of our Gaels teams. Back to back women's soccer National Championships and women's ultimate national champions. Provincial championships in cycling, men's fencing, women's soccer, men's volleyball and the first ever in women's volleyball.

I would like to recognize the student-athletes who have earned academic All-Star status this past year. I also commend our Gaels for their work in the community contributing to local charities through projects that grow community, health & wellness and sport.

I would like to extend my appreciation to our dedicated coaches, support staff, alumni and team supporters who combine to create a positive environment that supports our student-athletes in pursuing excellence in athletics and academia.

To our graduating student-athletes who will be departing for other endeavours after this year, I wish you the best of luck. Your Queen's experience will certainly serve you well as you depart for the next chapter in your lives. As our newest alumni, I implore you to remain engaged with your respective programs and support future generations as they continue the athletic legacy you have helped to forge.

As the 2011-2012 academic year draws to a close, I am very pleased to recognize and applaud the accomplishments enjoyed by our many student-athletes, teams and programs this year. It has been a demanding year of competition, and opportunities such as the Colour Awards provide the chance to reflect upon the season as well as the dedication, hard work, camaraderie and achievement that made another successful year.

For those of you receiving awards this evening, congratulations on your accolades - they are especially notable given the formidable competition present in our programs. For all of you, thank you for your contributions to the Queen's spirit and the culture of sport that is so important to the traditions we value on our campus.

I would also like to recognize the contributions of the team captains, coaches and program support staff for your dedication and leadership of the program, I am appreciative of the skill and care that you provide to each of your respective programs.
