The UNO men’s tennis team begins the 2011-12 season with designs of continuing on building around a young squad. With three seniors, the Mavs will be looking toward younger players, including sophomore transfer Carlos Ramos Salazar. Ramos Salazar, a transfer from Drury and native of Hermosillo, Mexico, will look to compete at the top spot this season. The Mavs start the spring season with three home matches against in-state foe Nebraska Wesleyan, future Summit League foe South Dakota State and in-state school Doane. The rest of the Mavs’ spring will feature some old MIAA foes and a challenging group of Division I teams. UNO plays at Washburn and against Southwest Baptist, at home against Northwest Missouri State, on the road at UMKC, Emporia State and against IPFW. On April 12, the Mavs host Creighton at Koch Tennis Center in their final home match of the season. The Mavs then wrap up the schedule with five road matches at Western Illinois, Bradley, Lindenwood, Missouri-St. Louis and SIUE. Two of the Mavericks’ top players from last season - senior Matt Frost and junior Eric McKnight - will redshirt the 2011-12 season. So the Mavs will turn to team captain Mike Hupf and fellow senior Ben Williams for leadership this season. Hupf, who has seen playing time in the doubles position, ended the season 3-2 at No. 3 doubles last year in league play. Hupf was part of the first recruiting class

in Maverick tennis history and has served as team co-captain for the last two years, making him one of two Mavs to do so in the history of the program. Hupf is also the SAAC representative for the men’s tennis team. “Mike is one of those kids who you don’t have to worry a lot about,” Head Coach Mike Saniuk said. “If you ask something to get done, it will get done. He leads by example both on the court and off the court.” Connor Larson, although just a freshman, will look to compete right away for the Mavs. Larson is fresh off recovering from a wrist injury and is looking to make his mark on the Maverick tennis program. “Connor is one of the hardest working players we have in our program,” Saniuk said. “He has the drive and determination that will lead him to great accomplishments at UNO. I am very excited to see him play this spring.” Sophomore Anthony Forcucci will see playing time on the court after posting a singles record of 6-11 and doubles record of 8-9 as a freshman. Along with Ramos Salazar, Saniuk brought in another transfer - junior Alex Drake from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Drake was ranked 83rd by the NJCAA as a singles player. Sophomore Brandon Otoski saw playing time at No. 5 singles last year for most duals and posted a record of 6-5 on the year in doubles. Otoski will look to help the Mavs mature on the court.

COACHING HISTORY

On June 21, 2011, Mike Saniuk was named the head coach of the UNO women’s tennis team, adding on to his duties as head coach of the men’s team, which he took on in June of 2010. Saniuk will lead both programs in 2011-12 as the Mavericks transition to Division I.

“I am really excited to be given the chance to coach both the men’s and women’s programs at UNO,” Saniuk said. “To be honest, it is a dream come true. With the support of the Omaha tennis community and at UNO, I know that our program has the chance to become something really special in the state. UNO’s best tennis is in the near future.”

In his first year as the head men’s tennis coach at UNO in 2010-11, Saniuk led the Mavericks to a 9-9 overall record, a 2-2 MIAA conference mark and a semifinal appearance at the conference tournament.

MIKE SANIUKSaniuk was named head coach of the UNO men’s tennis team in June of 2010 after two seasons as the assistant coach for the Maverick men’s and women’s tennis programs.

A 2006 graduate of Nebraska-Kearney, he was a four-year letterwinner for the Lopers where he earned all-conference honorable mention honors and helped UNK to two NCAA II Sweet 16 appearances.

Saniuk has several years of teaching and coaching experience as he conducted and worked at numerous clinics and camps throughout Nebraska and Minnesota. He also is experienced in teaching private and group lessons in Omaha.

A Bellevue, Neb. native, Saniuk graduated from Omaha Gross Catholic High School where he helped lead the Cougars to the 2000 Nebraska state Class B title.

You become a “prospective student-athlete” when you start ninth grade classes. Before the ninth grade, you become a prospective student-athlete if a college gives you (or your relatives or friends) any financial aid or other benefits that the college does not provide to prospective students generally.

You become a “recruited prospective student-athlete” at a particular college if any coach or representative of the college’s athletics interests (booster or representative) approaches you (or any member of your family) about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college. Activities by coaches or boosters that cause you to become a recruited prospective student athlete are: •Providingyouwithanofficialvisit; •Placingmorethanonetelephonecalltoyouorany othermemberofyourfamily;or •Visitingyouoranyothermemberofyourfamily anywhere other than the college campus.

You can visit an institution’s campus any time at your own expense (unofficial visit). On such a visit, you may receive three complimentary admissions to a game on that campus.

During your official visit (which may not exceed 48 hours), you may receive round-trip transportation between your home (or high school) and the campus, and you (and your parents) may receive meals, lodging and complimentary admissions to campus athletic events. Meals provided to you (and/or your parents) on an official visit may be provided either on or off the institution’s campus.

In Division II, alumni, boosters or representatives of the institution’s athletics interest can not make in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts or use any telephonic communication with a prospect or their relatives. On campus contact and written communication are permitted, but please contact the head coach of the sport beforehand.

In Division I, alumni, boosters or representatives of the institution’s athletics interest cannot make in-person, on or off campus recruiting contacts, or written or telephonic communications with a prospect or their relatives.

In addition, you or your family may not receive any benefit, inducement or arrangement such as cash, clothing, cars, improper expenses, transportation, gifts or loans, etc., to encourage you to sign a National Letter of Intent to attend an NCAA institution.

If you intend to participate in Division I or II athletics as a freshman in college, you must be registered with and be certified as eligible by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. You should register with the clearinghouse whenever you decide you would like to participate in athletics as a freshman. It’s generally best to register after your junior year grades appear on your transcript. Although you can register anytime before participation, if you register late you may face delays that will prevent you from practicing and competing. You can register online at NCAAClearinghouse.net.

ASSOCIATE AD MIKE KEMPMike Kemp was elevated to the position of Associate Athletic Director at the University of Nebraska Omaha on May 14, 2009. He has primary oversight of UNO hockey, golf, cross country/track and field, soccer, tennis as well as facilities, game management and athletic media relations.

During a 12-year tenure as head coach, Kemp guided UNO hockey from a fledgling independent to an established program with one of the best followings in college hockey. UNO has ranked among the nation’s college hockey elite in attendance from the start and boasts college hockey’s largest booster club.

As the head coach of a startup program, Kemp built a team that was a model of consistency in the always-tough Central Collegiate Hockey Association. He earned 2005 CCHA Coach of the Year honors. In its first ten years of play, UNO had an average finish of sixth place in the league and earned CCHA home playoff games in eight of those ten years. Kemp also placed players on one of the CCHA all-league teams in eight of ten years. Both of those accomplishments are surpassed only by the University of Michigan. Kemp coached five All-Americans while at Nebraska-Omaha and had a total of twelve all-CCHA players in ten years. For his contributions to hockey in Omaha, he was inducted into the Omaha Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010.

Kemp may be best remembered for his commitment to community service. Under his guidance, the UNO hockey team was widely recognized for its contributions to the quality of life in greater Omaha. The highlight came during the 2008-09 season when the team held its “Leap for a Cure” fundraiser which raised $44,000 for brain cancer research at the Estabrook Cancer Center.

Under Leahy, the Mavericks enjoyed their most prominent success on and off the playing field. He guided the program into NCAA Division II and the North Central Conference.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Marquette and a master’s degree from Creighton. He is a member of the UNO Athletic Hall of Fame, the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame and the NCC Hall of Fame.

In 1969, The Omaha Softball Association asked Claussen to help start the Women’s College World Series. Since UNO was the host school, Claussen coached a softball team to compete in the WCWS. During that time she began laying the groundwork for what has become one the top women’s athletic programs in NCAA II.

Claussen started the Diet Pepsi/UNO Women’s Walk in 1986, the primary fundraiser for UNO women’s athletics, which has now raised over 3 million dollars.

THE UNIVERSITYYo u r U N O C o m m u n i t y

Those who are new to Omaha are often surprised at its trees and rolling landscape, its abundance of green spaces and its friendliness. Situated within the city of nearly a half million area residents is another pleasant surprise: The University of Nebraska Omaha.

Founded in 1908, the school relocated to its present site in 1938 and entered the University of Nebraska system in 1968. The main campus casually sprawls over 88.5 carefully landscaped acres on Dodge Street. The Pacific Street Campus, already home the Peter Kiewit Institute, continues to grow with the addition of Mammel Hall, the home of the College of Business Administration, and an additional student housing facility which will be built near the Scott Conference Center. More than 15,000 full-time, part-time and graduate students are enrolled and more than 25,000 area residents are alumni of the university.

The students are a diverse group, representing 47 states and 75 countries, and the age distribution is the national model with an even representation of traditional students just out of high school and older students beginning or returning to college.

Programs offered by the University are just as diverse, ranging from the Aviation Institute to the Center for Afghanistan Studies, UNO Study Abroad, International Studies and others.

A NEW ERA AT UNOTransitioning to NCAA Division I and the Summit League

In March 2011, Nebraska Omaha announced its intention to reclassify as an NCAA Division I institution beginning with the 2011-12 academic and athletic year. With approval from the University of Nebraska Board of Regents, UNO accepted a formal invitation for membership in the Summit League, a Midwestern conference made up of 10 other schools: IPFW, IUPUI, UMKC, North Dakota State, Oakland, Oral Roberts, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Southern Utah and Western Illinois.

As a reclassifying institution, UNO will enjoy a full regular-season conference schedule with Summit League opponents in 2012-13, and Maverick programs will be eligible for NCAA postseason competition in 2015-16.

The hockey team, which is currently a member of the WCHA, will join the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference as a charter member in 2013-14.

“Joining The Summit League and Division I is the next step in UNO’s continuing transformation and forward momentum. We look forward to an exciting level of competition with institutions who mirror our commitment to their students, academic excellence and their communities.” -- UNO Chancellor Dr. John Christensen

Hockey was previously UNO’s only team competing in NCAA Division I. Beginning with the 2011-12 season, all Maverick squads will begin scheduling Division I opponents.

An Exciting Beginning

“All of us at UNO are excited by our move to The Summit League and the impending competition with its outstanding member institutions. Our reclassification will ensure the success of Maverick athletics for many years to come.” -- Athletic Director Trev Alberts
