Dr. Mark Foley has served as president of the University of Mobile since 1998 and is the third president of the university since its founding in 1961. During more than a decade of leadership, Dr. Foley has led the move to intentionally integrate faith and learning in all areas of university life, while raising academic standards, building new residence halls, establishing outstanding programs such as the Center for Performing Arts, and earning the private Christian university national rankings.

His emphasis on the core values of faith, learning and leadership has extended to all operations of the university, from the classroom to the administrative offices. With these core values in place, the university is committed to graduating confident Christian men and women who have mastered the body of knowledge required by the degree they hold; who know how to think; who know what they believe and why they believe it; who possess the courage to live and work according to those beliefs; who accept responsibility as caretakers of that with which God has entrusted them; and who possess the willingness and skill to use their influence in appropriate and effective ways to change the world around them.

Dr. Foley is a member of the Executive Committee of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, a past chairman of the Alabama Association of Independent Colleges and Schools,

and a member of the Board of Directors of Victory Health Partners and Volunteers of America, Southeast, Inc.

Previously, Dr. Foley was executive vice president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He holds a bachelor of business administration from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas; and a master of divinity and a doctor of philosophy in psychology and counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister, a former business owner, and has practiced as a professional counselor. His wife, Marilyn, is involved in many university activities. She holds a bachelor of science in education from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and is a former classroom educator.

The Foleys have two children and two granddaughters. Their daughter, Molly, is married to Doug Sawyer, an accountant in Georgia, and they have two daughters, Avery and Abby. Their son, Rob, and his wife, Leah, reside in Colorado. Rob is on the staff of Denver Theological Seminary and Leah is a registered nurse.

Coach Joe Niland has been the head man at Mobile for 12 seasons. Not a stranger to success, Niland has posted 10 20-win seasons and recorded his first 30-win season during the 2004-05 season when he guided the Mobile Rams to a 30-6 record. He guided the Rams to back-to-back Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05.

In 12 full seasons as head basketball coach at the University of Mobile, Niland’s teams have posted a 246-142 record overall and a 119-69 mark in GCAC play. His 1999-2000 squad went 24-10, earning a trip to the NAIA National Tournament. In all, Niland has guided the Rams to five NAIA National Tournament appearances in nine seasons, two Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championships, and back-to-back Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season co-championships in 2003-04 and 2004-05. His 2001-02 team posted the program’s first win versus a NCAA Div. I opponent, when the Rams upset defending SWAC Champion Alabama State 65-61, and in 2009-10 the Rams beat Louisiana-Lafayette 68-64. Niland also serves as the Athletic Director at the University of Mobile, overseeing 13 athletics programs that constantly rate at the top of the NAIA.

Before his time at Mobile, Niland led Spring Hill College to the NAIA National Tournament on two separate occasions, both in the 1993-94 season and again during 1998-99 season. During his tenure at

Spring Hill, the Badgers compiled a 127-60 (.679) overall record and a 75-29 (.721) mark in the GCAC. Niland’s 127 wins are the most in SHC history.

The Niland family has a history of success in athletics. His father, the late Joe Sr., coached at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY from 1947-54 and was also the Director of College Scouting for the Buffalo Braves of the NBA. Niland’s younger brother, Dave, is head basketball coach at Penn State-Behrend College in Erie, PA and his late uncle, Tom Niland, coached at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY from 1947-1972 and served as the school’s athletic director for 45 years, retiring in 1992. Also, Michigan’s head basketball coach, John Beilein, who took the University of West Virginia to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament in 2004-05, is Niland’s first cousin.

Prior to coming to Mobile and taking his first head coaching job at Spring Hill College, Niland spent three seasons as an assistant at Florida Southern College where the Mocs posted a 73-20 overall record, winning two Sunshine State Conference titles and earning two NCAA Division II National Tournament berths.

From 1988-90, Niland served as an assistant at the University of Tampa. The Spartans also won two Sunshine State Conference titles while twice appearing in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The 1988-89 Tampa team finished ranked No. 1 in the final regular-season poll.

In addition to his coaching duties, Niland also served as the dean of students at Spring Hill College from 1995 to 1997. As dean of students, Niland was responsible for the division of Student Life which oversaw the departments of Residence Life, Athletics, Health Services, Student Activities, Greek Life and Intramurals. Niland also served on the President’s Cabinet.

Niland lends his coaching expertise outside of Pharr Gymnasium as he is active in the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) working with the youth teams at his church, St. Dominic’s. He also coaches various AAU and youth teams. In the summer of 2008, Niland was selected as a court coach for the 2008 USA Men’s U18 National Team Trials.

Niland lives in west Mobile with his wife, Ellen, and their four children: A.J., Katelin, Jake, and Patrick.

Shaddrick Jenkins has served four seasons as the assistant coach for the University of Mobile basketball team after five years in the same capacity at Coffeyville Community College and a successful playing career in the collegiate ranks.

In his five years at Coffeyville under Jay Herkelman, Jenkins helped coach the team to four NJCAA national tournament appearances. In 2007, the squad earned a trip to the Final Four and finished ranked 3rd in the nation.

Prior to his coaching career, Jenkins played two years each for Coffeyville (95-97) and the University of South Florida (97-99). He earned Freshman of the Year honors at Coffeyville and averaged 19.5 points per game in his second season. In his first season at Conference USA member South Florida, Jenkins led the team in practically every major category but scoring, while ranking among the conference leaders in steals.

Jenkins earned a bachelor of science in social science while in school and played professional basketball for 1 season in Mexico, before coaching.

Willie Burns Jr. begins his second season as an assistant coach for the Rams. He brings with him more than 22 years of teaching and coaching experience after serving as the Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at Rain, Blount, Vigor, Citronelle and Williamson. Burns led Blount to five 5A Area Championships and Vigor to a 6A Area Championship in

2006. He was named Mobile Press-Register and Mobile Optimist Club Coach of the Year in 1994 and 2009.

Burns graduated from Stillman College with a degree in physical education and resides in Mobile with his wife, Chelice, and their three children and two grandchildren: Thaddeus, Chelsea, Montraze, Vera and Landen.

Rene Antee begins his second season as an assistant coach for the Rams after a brilliant playing career at Mobile. Antee played for the Rams from 1997-00 and was named NAIA All-American in 1999 and 2000. He was named All-Conference each year and named GCAC Freshman of the Year in 1997. In 1999, the Rams advanced to the NAIA National

Championship game.

After graduating from Mobile, Antee continued his playing career overseas, playing for Horsens IC (DEN) of Basketligaen 2006-07. He averaged 17.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 15 games. He is second all-time in scoring and assists at Mobile with 2,040 points and 579 career assists.

2011-12 Preview

23

The University of Mobile men’s basketball team will enter the 2011-12 season coming off a SSAC West Co-Division Championship with solid returning perimeter players and added muscle in the paint.

This will be Mobile’s second season of competition in the Southern States Athletic Conference after the Rams went 15-14 overall last year with an 8-4 mark in divisional play.

Returning in the backcourt are Pinson Valley, Ala., native Spencer Duke; Mobile, Ala., native Ji Kimbrough; Perth, Australia native Christian Salinas; and Birmingham, Ala., native Marcus Polnett. Kimbrough is a two-time All-Conference selection who averaged 14 points per game last season. Duke has played in 78 games for the Rams, and Polnett brings two years of experience handling the point. Salinas played in 26 games last year for the Rams. Between the four, they totaled 142 assists and 97 steals in 2010-11. Duke led the team with 66 assists, while Kimbrough was second with 38 steals.

“We feel good about Spencer at the point and Ji is a combo who can also handle some point,” Head Coach Joe Niland said. “Marcus has seen a lot of time for us and Salinas gives us depth and experience.”

Losing 2010-11 NAIA All-American Donte Walker and his 1,422 points will be tough, but the Rams brought in some new players expected to contribute at the guard spot early in their careers.

Lithonia, Ga., native Jonathan Tinch comes to Mobile from Stephenson High School and Mobile, Ala., native Brady Boyd is transferring in from Faulkner State. Tinch averaged 20.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game as a prep senior, while earning Region 5-A Player of the Year honors.

“Tinch is a SF/SG that has the opportunity to be very good,” Niland said. “Once he adjusts to the college game and develops his skills, he can be a real good contributor. Brad has a lot of experience at the JUCO level and is a real heady, versatile player that plays good defense. He can play both

point guard and shooting guard.”

When the guards look to dish the ball inside, they should find plenty of options.

“Last year we were a little light in the post, but this year, it appears we will be much deeper,” Niland said.

At center, 6-9 senior Matt Turner will battle Lake Charles, La., native Kevin Calloway; Miami, Fla., native Antonio Hester; and 6-11 Jean Pierre Uwamahoro for playing time. Hester won a State Championship at Miami Norland High School and was named Freshman of the Year at Indian River State College. Turner and Calloway, meanwhile, combined for 38.5 minutes, 13.6 points and 8.7 rebounds per game last season, while each playing in all 29 games.

“Matt brings 88 games of experience to the post, while Kevin has been solid the last two years at power forward and center,” Niland said. “Hester comes from Miami Dade CC and is very strong around the basket, while Jean Pierre is returning from a knee injury, and should be a factor with his length and athleticism.”

Other players looking for time at the forward slots are Bonifay, Fla., native Brock Dockery; Grand Bay, Ala., native Alex Tolbert; Springfield, La., native Cody Scott; and Geraldine, Ala., native Tyler Cole. Dockery led Mobile with 34 3-pointers made and with 6.4 rebounds per game, while Scott averaged 24 points and 10 rebounds per game at Springfield High School.

“Brock has seen lots of action at Mobile and is versatile enough to play SF and PF, while Alex returns for his senior year and has made great strides,” Niland said. “Cody is probably the best athlete we’ve had in several years. He has a bright future and will push for playing time as he gains experience.”

That talent is allowing Mobile to redshirt Lithonia, Ga., native Miles Grier; Denham Springs, La., native Tevin Perkins; Enterprise, Ala., native EJ Conley; Dallas, Texas native Joseph Pickett; Pass Christian,

Miss., native Marcus Clark; Powder Springs, Ga., native Brandon Waters; and Pensacola, Fla., native Matthew Smith-Cook.

Awaiting the players will be a tough schedule that begins Nov. 3 with an exhibition game at NCAA-I Nicholls State. The slate of games features 31 games overall and 15 home games, with the first home game taking place Nov. 8 at 7:30 pm when Mobile hosts the Steers of Texas College.

With each team in the SSAC now playing everyone, the Rams will be faced with 18 conference games. The first conference game is Nov. 18 at 7 pm at Southern Poly. The first home conference game pits Mobile against Lee University Dec. 2 at 7:30 pm. The road games at Southern Poly Nov. 18 and Emmanuel Jan. 7 will pose a challenge, as the two schools were a combined 28-1 at home last season.

“The conference slate will be tough with so many games, and then you factor in home-and-home with NAIA National Tournament teams Xavier, Tougaloo and Life, and the always formidable SUNO,” Niland said.

In addition to Nicholls State, the Rams will also have an exhibition game at cross-town rival South Alabama Nov. 16 at 7 pm. Lee, Southern Poly and Emmanuel also advanced to the NAIA National Tournament last season, meaning Mobile will have nine games against those teams. Lee, Emmanuel, Southern Poly, Shorter, Tougaloo and Xavier all won 23+ games last season.

Even with the tough schedule looming, the Rams expect to win in 2011-12.

“Our expectations are to compete for a conference title,” Niland said. “Our first goal is to win the West, then win the SSAC and have a shot at Kansas City. We have a shot, it’s just going to take chemistry and hard work. We need to be a lot better Jan.-March than we are Nov.-Dec.”

2010-11 Review

26

The 2010-11 season saw the University of Mobile men’s basketball team finish with a 15-14 overall record and an 8-4 mark in conference play, earning a SSAC West Co-Division Championship in their first season of competition in the Southern States Athletic Conference.

The season did not get off to a great start, as the Rams lost 54-73 at Tougaloo, but the team rebounded to win the next four games; scoring over 73 in each contest.

“A 4-1 record is always good, and the best win was the 77-59 win at an always-tough SUNO team,” Head Coach Joe Niland said. “But, we knew the level of competition was going to get tougher.”

Get tougher it did, as the team faced three 2009-10 NAIA National Tournament teams in Life, Lee and Tougaloo, and a highly- regarded Shorter over the next seven games. Mobile went 3-4 in that stretch, being held below 50 points against Shorter and Life. The Rams did beat SSAC East foe Brewton-Parker.

“Our offense struggled at times, but for the most part our defense kept us in games, and with a good defense, you’ll have a chance,” Niland said.

From there, the team jumped into SSAC West play, going 2-1 in games against always-tough William Carey, Belhaven, who was coming off its first NAIA National Tournament appearance, and AUM, who was also coming off a run to Kansas City.

“It was good to start conference play with two early wins against tough teams,” Niland said. “We knew it was going to be a battle all season, and that gave us a good start.”

After a couple of non-conference setbacks, the Rams went 4-1 over the next five SSAC West games, beating cross-town rival Spring Hill, Faulkner and Belhaven at home, and taking down Loyola on the road.

The Rams held rival Spring Hill to 58 points to pick up the five-point win

thanks to limiting the Badgers to 5-of-14 from 3-point range and 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting from Bentley Hylton. The Rams then held Faulkner to 29% from the floor and forced 22 turnovers, while Ji Kimbrough, Donte Walker, Kevin Calloway and Hylton all went for over 10 points. Then, after a 55-51 win at Loyola and a 63-67 loss to William Carey, the Rams evened the season series with the Blazers by taking a 76-74 decision. Mobile shot 50% from the floor, and Kimbrough and Walker combined for 47 points.

“Four of those games were decided by five points or less, and it was good to see the team respond in pressure situations,” Niland said.

Sitting at 13-10 overall and 6-2 in the division, the Rams faced five more regular season games. Wanting to finish on a positive note heading to postseason play, Mobile stumbled to a 2-3 mark, breaking 66 points only once. Mobile fell 52-54 at Auburn-Montgomery, thanks to a 44% shooting mark from the charity stripe, and suffered a 57-66 setback at home against Xavier, when they hit only 2-of-14 shots from 3-point range.

Mobile did salvage a 65-53 win at Spring Hill thanks to 27 points from Kimbrough and a 22-for-30 effort from the free throw line. The Rams closed the regular season

with a 71-69 double-overtime victory over Loyola, as the Rams crashed the boards and finished with a 54-39 rebounding edge and a 4-for-8 effort from 3-point range from Kimbrough.

“It wasn’t how we wanted to end the regular season,” Niland said. “We looked good early in close games, and then we lost by single digits to AUM, Xavier and Faulkner.”

Despite the Co-Division Championship, the Rams were forced to play a Southern Poly team that won 23 games, in the SSAC Tournament. The Hornets won the game 70-57 as they went 7-of-19 from 3-point range compared to 1-of-12 for Mobile. The Rams also turned the ball over 22 times in the game.

“Southern Poly was a tough matchup, but going into postseason play you know you will have to beat good teams and we just didn’t do it,” Niland said.

Guards Ji Kimbrough and Walker each earned All-Conference honors, while Walker was named a 2011 Honorable Mention NAIA All-American. Kimbrough averaged 14 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, while Walker averaged 14.9 points and 5.4 rebounds, along with a team-high 45 steals.

“Ji and Donte were fantastic all year,” Niland said. “They combined for nearly 29 points per game between them. As a senior, Donte meant a lot to the team, and he ends his career as our 4th all-time leading scorer.”

Donte Walker earned Honorable Mention NAIA All-American honors in 2010-11.
