20-2 Outlook

Bolstered with a solid group of returning players and a crop of new-comers who saw significant action

during the fall semester, the 2011-12 edition of the Southeastern Louisiana University golf team is one that will contend for the Southland Conference title while securing its sixth berth to the NCAA Regionals . Southeastern, under veteran coach Tim Baldwin, earned a third-place finish in the 2011 Southland Conference Championships and an at-large berth in the NCAA Regionals - the Lions' fifth overall and third in the past five years . "We've got a young group of play-ers, but we're steadily making progress," Baldwin, who is in his 24th season as head coach, said . "During the fall, we didn't have our best week on the road, but we finished on a good note and are working to play our best golf and being one of the teams to beat (in the Southland Conference) in the spring ." Led by returning letterwinners Philipp Westermann, Rhys West and Daniel Zuluaga, Southeastern maintained its strong

tradition of being ranked as one of the top 100 programs nationally by both GolfStat and Golfweek . Since winning medalist honors in his first tournament as a Lion, Westermann has etched his name in the Southeastern record books in two-plus seasons on the golf course . The German has posted the two lowest scoring averages in school his-tory and his career 72 .06 scoring average is nearly a full stroke better than the previous record holder . In 2010-11, Westermann added a pair of victories to an already impressive resume claiming medalist honors in back-to-back events beginning with the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate . Westermann added medal-ist honors at the Jim West Intercollegiate and finished as a first-team All-Southland Conference performer in the process . He will be joined by West, a junior who came into his own at the end of the 2010-11 campaign with 21st-place showing at the Southland Conference Championships and a fifth-place performance at the NCAA Ocala Regional .

After arriving at the beginning of the spring semester in 2011, Zuluaga recorded three top-20 finishes on the season and looks to become a steady third option for the Lions . Returning squad member Sebastian Garcia along with newcomers Grady Brame, Baptiste Courtachon, Santiago Mejia and

The trio of Philipp Westermann (left), Rhys West (center) and Daniel Zuluaga (right) looks to help lead Southeastern to its fourth overall Southland Conference Championship, and its first since 2010 . The trio are returning members from the 2010-11 squad that finished third overall at the 2011 Championships and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Regionals .

"In the spring, it's impor-tant, but it's not weighed any different than in the fall. Everything we do during the season counts, but in the spring, we have to have things rolling in order to compete for a championship and get to the (NCAA) regionals."

Charlie Sault will look to make their pres-ence felt as they attempt to join the veteran trio in the weekly five-man lineup . "We're trying to get a really good look at them," Baldwin said of his newcomers . "Grady Brame is a local kid who's getting a lot of playing time and is getting better every day . We have some newcomers, who are really good players but need experi-ence ." Southeastern participated in four tournaments in the fall, including the annual Golf week Conference Challenge that saw the Lions compete against some of the top teams in the nation . The Lions capped off their fall schedule with a sec-ond-place showing at the Santa Clara Cabo Intercollegiate, finishing behind top-5 ranked

Arkansas and will face a strong field in each of their seven tournaments in the spring . Southeastern will host the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate in March and will look for its fourth Southland Conference title since joining the league in 1998 when the league hosts its annual championship April 23-25 in McKinney . Texas . "In the spring, it's important, but it's not weighed any different than in the fall," Baldwin said . "Everything we do during the season counts, but in the spring, we have to have things rolling in order to compete for a championship and get to the (NCAA) regionals ."

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

SCOTTO REPEATS AS ALL-AMERICAN SCHOLAR

Southeastern Louisiana University golfer Cedric Scotto added another award to an impressive resume when he was one of 138 Division I players across the country named as a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar as selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America . The award, the second consecutive year Scotto was named to the team, marked the seventh consecutive year a Lion was named to the prestigious group joining for-mer standouts Brett Bergeron (2006 and 2007), Matthew Carvell (2008 and 2009), Hugo Leon (2006) and Anders Hofvander (2005) . Scotto was one of two players from Southland Conference schools named to the list that included Kyle Robbins of Stephen F . Austin, who was also a repeat selection . A native of Albi, France, Scotto became the first men’s golfer in Southland Conference history to be named Student-Athlete of the Year for three consecutive seasons . He was the only Southland student-athlete named to the 2011 CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District VI at-large team . Scotto ranked fourth in the league with a 72 .8 stroke average and recorded three top-10 scores . A second-team all-confer-ence selection, Scotto finished tied for fifth at the Southland tournament (215) and led Southeastern to its fifth NCAA Regional berth in school history . Scotto scored par or better in 14-of-32 rounds played in 2010-11 and beat 74 .6 percent of all the individual opponents he faced .

Southeastern's Philipp Westermann (second from right) claimed medalist honors at the 2011 BancorpSouth Intercollegiate, hosted by Ole Miss . Westermann finished one shot ahead of Lee Hulse of South Alabama in claiming the first of two events in 2010-11 .

Carter Plantation - Home of the Lions

Carter Plantation is home to PGA championship and Louisiana native David Toms' first signature design and the course is the recent recipient of Golf Magazine's "Top 10 Courses You Can Play" . The spectacular 18-hole, 7,000-plus yard, par-

72 golf course winds through three distinct Louisiana landscapes - live oak flats, cypress wetlands, and upland pine forests . Carter Plantation is an honored member of the Louisiana Audubon Golf Trail . Following a strict evaluation process including course playability, conditioning, amenities and customer service, The Louisiana Golf Commission moved to add the course to the nationally recognized trail . As a member of the trail, Carter Plantation is part of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for Golf Courses, a program dedicated to protecting the environment and preserving the heritage of the game of golf . In addition to meeting Audubon Golf Trail criteria, Carter Plantation is equipped to professionally cater group and tournament outings with expert PGA of American service standards . The visually stunning daily fee course has a Louisiana Golf Association slope rating of 140 and a course rating of 74 .4 from the championship tees . Both the front and back nines consist of two par-3s, five par-4s, and two par-5s . Eighty-six strategically placed bunkers offer surprise and challenge to the golfer . Carpeted with Tifeagle on the greens and Tifsport on the rolling fairways, each of the holes offers four or five tee positions, with water coming into play on 11 of the holes . Great effort has been made to preserve the plantation's native wildlife habitats, and indigenous grasses and plants have been extensively incorporated into the landscaping . A double-ended driving range, three practice greens, and practice bunkers are addi-tional features of the course .

Carter Plantation, a new David Toms’ Signature course located just minutes from Hammond in Springfield, La ., is destined to become one of the best layouts in the State . Through a partnership with the Athletics Department, Carter Plantation is the new home for Lions’ Golf

Bart Bellairs, former director of inter-collegiate athletics at Savannah State University in Savannah, Ga ., and a

senior athletics administrator at Virginia Military Institute was named the 15th Director of Athletics at Southeastern on Nov . 24, 2009 . Bellairs succeeds Joel Erdmann, who accepted a similar position at the University of South Alabama in August . Southeastern men’s golf coach Tim Baldwin has served as interim director since Erdmann’s depar-ture . “We are excited to welcome Bart Bellairs to our staff,” said President John L . Crain . “He has a broad range of accom-plishments in athletic administration and shares Southeastern’s focus on the ‘stu-dent’ part of the student-athlete equation . He has a proven track record in inspiring his athletes and staff to achieve their full potential, whether in the classroom or in athletic competition . And he has experi-ence in handling marketing, promotion, fundraising and budgetary issues, important skills in these days of tightened finances .” “I liked what I saw at Southeastern from the start but when my wife Jacki and I met the people, we knew we had found a home,” Bellairs said . “My whole life I have spent time in college towns; growing up, as a coach, and as an administrator, and I

have been blessed by living in some great places . When I started preparing for the interview I was very impressed with the campus and the attention Southeastern paid to supporting the students; but when I met the people -- the faculty, coaches, and members of the community – I wanted to be a part of it .” At Southeastern, Bellairs will oversee 15 NCAA Division I affiliated programs that compete in the Southland Conference . Since joining the Southland in 1997, the Lions have captured 21 regular-season or tournament championships, including four regular-season titles in women’s soccer, three in women’s tennis, two in men’s bas-ketball and two in men’s golf . Southeastern also claimed the Southland Men’s All-Sports Trophy in 2008-09, highlighted by the 2009 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field championship with the women’s soccer team earning its first-ever berth to the NCAA Championships . Prior to his move to Hammond, Bellairs was at Savannah State, an NCAA Division I program, with 15 teams, since July 2008 . There he implemented an academics suc-cess plan that included an academic “road map” for each student-athlete from regis-tration to graduation . He developed a Title IX/Gender Equity program that involved reworking the athletic budget to resolve long-time problems with staffing, facilities and scholarships . During his tenure at Savannah State, football, men’s basketball, softball and women’s volleyball teams all saw significant improvement in seasonal wins . Prior to joining Savannah State, Bellairs served as senior associate director of inter-collegiate athletics from 2005 to 2008 and head basketball coach from 1993 to 2005 at VMI in Lexington, Va . Responsibilities included marketing and promotions, ticket operations, management of the licensing program and serving as director for all

key athletic facilities . There he created new pricing strategies, athletic department promotions and new revenue streams . As head basketball coach, he was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year, the Virginia Coach of the Year and the Sports Illustrated Unknown Coach of the Year . Bellairs also served as assistant basket-ball coach at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va . from 1988 to 1993, where his teams saw one NCAA tourna-ment appearance and five NIT appear-ances . He was also an assistant basketball coach at the University of Massachusetts (1986-1988) and assistant basketball coach at the University of Maryland (1984-1986) . Plus, he served as head basketball coach, head cross country coach and assistant baseball coach at Wilkes College in Wilkes Barre, Pa . (1983-1985) . He holds a master of science degree in physical education and athletics adminis-tration from Western Illinois University and a bachelor of arts degree in sociology/social work from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N .C . Bellairs and his wife Jacki have five children .
