SARADOELLCLARK, NJ / PENN STATE ‘00

SECOND SEASON

Sara Doell is currently in her second year as the head coach of Seton Hall’s women’s golf program. She was

named the fi rst head coach in the new program’s history on March 26, 2010. Doell came to Seton Hall with a

wealth of golf knowledge, having spent the prior four and a half years as an assistant coach at her alma mater,

Penn State.

Before her work as an assistant coach with the Nittany Lions, Doell spent more than four years as an assistant

golf professional at Ballantyne Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was the professional liaison for

the women’s golf league and the lead instructor of the junior golf program.

Doell graduated from Penn State University in 2000 with a degree in Media Studies, focusing on the portrayals

of women in sports media. On scholarship from 1996-2000, Doell left a lasting impression on the Nittany Lion

golf program as she had more than 10 top-10 fi nishes. Not only does Doell currently hold the Penn State record

for the lowest 54-hole score (215), she was team captain for the Lions from 1999-2000. That same year, Doell

won the Women’s Golf Academic and Athletic Achievement award, the Mary Kennedy-Zierke award and the

Penn State Spiritus Lionus Academic Leadership Award. The Kennedy-Zierke award is given annually to the

student-athlete who provides outstanding leadership and dedication as a varsity golfer.

In 1998, she was the New York State Amateur Champion. Doell also became the Women’s Rochester District

Amateur Champion in both 1997 and 2000. She carded her fi rst hole-in-one on March 28th, 2005 at Waterford

Golf Club in Rock Hill, S.C.

With competitive playing, teaching and coaching experience, Doell has developed a coaching style that

matches her core values. “I value hard work, balance, mindfulness and positive energy. I believe that my role

as a coach is to integrate those values into my coaching. It is important to give each individual athlete the tools

she needs to improve her skills and approach to the game. Practices will be designed to help each player work

on her individual needs while helping the team as a whole. We will focus on short game, course management

and target awareness. I also stress the importance of staying with the process instead of being so focused on

outcome. I am a strong believer in positive energy and how it directly correlates to success. I can guarantee

you one thing - the team will have fun in the process!”

Doell is a Class A Teaching Member of the LPGA. She currently lives in Clark, New Jersey.

DEBBIEMURPHY

SECOND SEASON

Debby Murphy has been a teaching professional for 27 years, and currently holds that postition at Trump National Golf Club. In 1998, she founded the Webster Golf Camp while serving as the teaching professional at Webster Golf Club, before developing The Academy at Webster Golf Club in 2002.

In 2001, Murphy was named the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional of the Year while earning the Phyllis Meekins Junior Development Award in the same year. She was also named a Top 50 Teacher by Golf Digest’s Golf For Women Magazine in 2001.

As a player, Murphy has competed in tournaments on the Future’s Tour, Australian LPGA, PGA of America and LPGA.

“I am both honored and excited to have the chance to add Debby Murphy as a volunteer assistant coach to the Seton Hall women’s golf program,” said Doell. “Debby was my swing instructor and coach from the time I was ten years old through my college golf career. She has had a very positive impact on me both as a player and a teacher. Debby has always been a strong ambassador for the game of golf and I look forward to working alongside her. I know that she will be very infl uential in helping to develop the individuals on this team both on and off the course.”

2011-12 PREVIEW2011-12 PREVIEWIn its fi rst season of competition, the Seton Hall women’s golf program enjoyed a number

of successes that point to a bright future on the links. Head coach Sara Doell guided a roster

composed primarily of freshmen last year, and she will welcome three talented newcomers to

a group of six returnees in 2011-12.

“This fall season looks to be very promising as we have six returning players and three fresh-

men on the roster,” Doell said. “With a year of experience for our returning players and a very

talented freshman class coming in, we have the potential to be very competitive this fall sea-

son. We are competing in fi ve strong events with solid fi elds and have an exciting opportunity

to advance this program to the next level.”

Sophomore Hannah Basalone was the Pirates’ most consistent performer in year one. Basa-

lone competed in every tournament and led the team with a 78.88 stroke average, while also

recording the fi rst two top-10 fi nishes for the new program. In her collegiate debut, she tied

for ninth in the Bucknell Invitational, before later placing fi fth at the Spider Invitational to

close out the fall. Basalone will remain a strong contender for the Hall’s number one spot in

her second season.

“Hannah had a very impressive freshman debut with four top-10 fi nishes, including a fi fth

place showing at the Spider Invitational,” Doell said. “She will look to improve on her fi rst year

scoring average as she has worked very diligently this past summer on her game. Hannah sets

a great example in the classroom as she fi nished with a 4.0 GPA last spring and earned a spot

on the NGCA Academic All-Scholar Team. I look to Hannah to lead this team into our second

season both on the golf course and in the classroom”

Despite battling injuries, sophomore Christina Cantú displayed plenty of potential as a rookie.

She was second on the team with a 79.68 stroke average and was the team’s top individual

fi nisher at the Yale Fall Intercollegiate and the Cincinnati Spring Invitational.

“Christina is coming in off of a recent win at the Houston Golf Association Eddie Burke, Sr.

Young Houstonian in late July,” Doell said. “I know this gave her some renewed confi dence in

her ability to compete with the best and she will take that into the fall season. After suff ering

several injuries last season, Christina worked hard in the gym and on the golf course and has

come back to campus injury free and ready to compete.”

Sophomores Samantha Massei and Haley Van Es represented the Pirates in every event dur-

ing the 2010-11 season. Massei provided one of the year’s most exciting moments when she

carded the program’s fi rst hole-in-one at the Bucknell Invitational on the fall season’s opening

weekend. Van Es showed steady improvement throughout the year, posting her best round at

the Cincinnati Spring Invitational.

“Sam started of her freshman season with a bang as she carded the fi rst hole-in-one in Se-

ton Hall women’s golf history during the Bison Invitational,” Doell said. “With the guidance of

Coach Murphy, she made some signifi cant swing changes during her fi rst year, and as she left

for the summer, I know that she felt good about these changes.”

“Haley worked hard her freshman year as she represented the team in the starting line-up in

every event,” Doell continued. “I know that Haley worked very hard on her swing, short game

and fi tness level over the past summer and is ready to come back with a strong performance

this fall. I look to Haley to lead these incoming freshmen with her energy and infectious en-

thusiasm.”

Senior Nicole Longobardo and sophomore Stacie Ballou also return after sharing time in the

Hall’s lineup last year.

“Nicole’s improvement from the fall of 2010 to the spring of 2011 was signifi cant,” Doell said.

“She returns as our only upperclassman and I know that she will step into a leadership role this

year. She is an excellent student, a hard worker and has a positive attitude.”

“Stacie is striking the ball very solidly and played some great golf this summer as she com-

peted in a collegiate players tour event at Radley Run Country Club and carded three rounds

that averaged 20 shots lower than her freshman year average,” Doell said. “The dedication and

hard work that she put in this summer has shown and I am excited to see her compete this fall.”

Freshman McKenzie Cutter joins the program from North Point High School in Maryland,

where she was a four-year varsity letter winner. Cutter fi nished third in the state champion-

ship as a junior and has nine top-10 fi nishes in national junior events.

“I have tracked McKenzie for several years through her junior career and have seen her golf

game, swing, short game and attitude make tremendous improvements,” Doell said. “I had

the chance to see her compete at the PGA Callaway event this past July in State College where

she fi nished second, shooting a 70-76-76-222. She has added impressive distance off the tee,

has a creative short game, and with some guidance on course management, I believe McKen-

zie has the potential to be a very strong competitor for us this fall.”

Ali Kruse, a freshman from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Kansas, has four top-10 and

eight top-20 fi nishes in national junior events. The 2010 Missouri Junior Amateur champion,

Kruse won the Kenneth Smith Award, presented annually to a Greater Kansas City Area High

School female and male golfer who demonstrate excellence on and off the course.

“When Ali decided to commit to the Pirates last year, I knew that we were very fortunate to

sign her,” Doell said. “She has improved her game dramatically since the summer of 2009 as

she fi red a career-low 71 in the fi nal round of the 2010 AJGA - Lockton tournament to fi nish

fi fth place in a very strong fi eld. I believe she has the potential to step into this line up as a

freshman and compete at a very high level.”

Freshman Erin McClure arrives at the Hall from Catalina Foothills High School in Arizona. A

four-year varsity letter winner, McClure helped her school to state championships in 2009 and

2010 and placed third individually as a senior. She boasts three top-10 fi nishes in AJGA quali-

fi ers.

“Having Erin on campus is exciting as she is such a positive and energetic person,” Doell said.

“When she left campus after her recruiting trip last fall, I knew that she was going to have a

positive impact on this team, not only on the golf course but also through her attitude.”

The Pirates will compete in fall tournaments at Bucknell, Yale, Princeton, Rutgers and Lehigh.

“I look forward to leading this program into its second season,” Doell said. “We begin on Sep-

tember 10th at the Bison Invitational hosted by Bucknell. Last year, we fi nished 10th in a fi eld

of 18 at this event and we can make signifi cant improvements on that fi nish with the strength

of this team.”

2010 SMAC Player of the Year, the fi rst-ever female player of the year for co-ed golf.

Coach Doell on Cutter:

“I have tracked McKenzie for several years through her junior career and have

seen her golf game, golf swing, short game and attitude make tremendous

improvements leading to her impressive performance this past summer. I

had the chance to see her compete at the PGA Callaway event this past July in

State College where she fi nished second shooting 70-76-76. I was very excited

to see how well she was playing and the way that she represented herself on

the course. She has added impressive distance off the tee, has a creative short

game and with some guidance on course management, I believe McKenzie has

the potential to be a very strong competitor for us this fall.”

PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Notre Dame captured both the men’s and

women’s 2011 BIG EAST Golf Championship titles following the fi nal

round of competition at Innisbrook Golf & Spa Resort in Palm Har-

bor, Fla., on Tuesday. The women fi nished with a three-round total

of 902 to beat second-place Louisville by 13 strokes. The men shot

had a 54-hole total of 876 to top the second-place Cardinals by six

strokes. It is the second time that the Irish have won both titles in

the same season and the fi rst time since 2004.

The Notre Dame women won their fourth BIG EAST team title and

their fi rst since 2008. The Irish carded a 310 in the fi nal round. The

13 stroke-win is the fourth-largest margin of victory in the history

of the championship. Four Irish players fi nished in the top 10 in the

individual standings, including freshman Kristina Nhim who led the

team in third place after carding 222 (+6) for the championship.

Junior Becca Huff er fi nished fourth with a 54-hole score of 223 (+7),

senior So Hyun Park placed seventh with a score of 229 (+13) and

senior Katie Conway placed 11th with a score of 233 (+17)

The Cardinals have fi nished in the top two at the BIG EAST Cham-

pionship in all six seasons that they have been members of the

conference. This is only the second time UofL has fi nished in sec-

ond to go along with four team titles. Louisville carded 915 for the

championship including a 305 in the fi nal round. The Cardinals were

led by sophomore Anna-Karin Ljungstrom, who fi nished in a tie for

fi rst with a three-round total of 221 (+5). Ljungstrom would fi nish

second after losing to St. John’s freshman Harin Lee in a playoff .

USF placed third after playing its best round on the fi nal day. The

Bulls shot 309 in the third round, fi nishing with a 54-hole total of

934. Sophomore Shena Yang led USF in fi fth place, carding 225 (+9)

for the championship. Georgetown took fourth with a score of 951.

For the fi rst time in the history of the BIG EAST Women’s Golf Championship, the individual title was decided in a playoff . After four playoff holes, St. John’s Lee topped Louisville’s Ljungstrom to take

the individual title. The two matched each other through the fi rst three playoff holes, playing holes 17, 18 and one. The pair then went to the par-fi ve second hole, where Lee made par to clinch the

crown. Lee is the fi rst Red Storm player to win the individual title in the 11-year history of the BIG EAST Women’s Championship.

BASALONE TIES FOR 26th; CANTU 28th

PALM HARBOR, FL. - Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) turned in her second straight strong performance with a 5-over-par, 77, in the third and fi nal round of the Seton Hall women’s golf team’s fi rst-ever BIG EAST Championship.

Collectively, the Pirates completed their historic tournament with a 352-336-348-1,036 to fi nish in eighth place at Innis-brook’s Island Course in Palm Harbor, Fla.

Notre Dame won the team championship in convincing fashion with a 38-over-par, 295-297-310-902. Louisville placed second 13 strokes behind the Fighting Irish.

“It has been a very special inaugural season for us,” said head coach Sara Doell. “We have developed a strong culture here to build off of for the future. I am proud of the girls and their con-sistent eff ort this season and I look forward to helping them get to the next level as we move forward.”

Basalone improved dramatically from a 92 in the fi rst round. The freshman fi nished up with a 75 in round two and a 77 in round three. For the tournament, Basalone placed 26th among all golfers with a 28-over-par, 92-75-77-244.

“I’m really proud of Hannah’s eff ort this week as she battled sick-ness and fought through it,” Doell said. “Sunday’s round was un-characteristic for her and she came back with two solid rounds to fi nish her off her freshman year on a positive note.”

Freshman Christina Cantú (Houston, Texas) also turned in a good fi rst BIG EAST Championship tournament despite playing with an ailing back. She led the team after her fi rst round 82 and joined Basalone as the second Pirate to post a sub-80 second round score with a 5-over-par, 78. For the three-round event, Cantú fi nished just two strokes behind Basalone for the team lead with a 30-over-par, 82-78-86-246 and placed 28th overall.

Freshman Samantha Massei (Allen, Texas) turned in the third-best tournament for the Pirates with a 54-over-par, 86-91-93-270.

Freshman Haley Van Es (Granger, Ind.) was consistent through-out the tournament with a trio of 92’s to fi nish 60-over-par with a 276. Rounding out the Pirates’ scoring, junior Nicole Longobar-do (Upland, Calif.) checked in with a 120-115-107-342.

Combine a student-discounted New Jersey transit ticket, with 30 minutes train-time, and you’re at Penn Statiion in Midtown Manhattan. From there, train, bus or walk to the neighborhood of your choice. Time Square’s Theater District: plays and musicals. Upper Fifth Avenue, dubbed Museum Mile; venerable institutions like the Metropolitan and the Guggenheim. Head Downtown and check out the fi nancial district including the New York Stock Exchange. Besides the cultural and entertainment opportunities New York’s burrough of Manhattan provides, many students take advantage of internships with museums, nonprofi t and government agencies, law and accounting fi rms, television and print media - the list goes on and on.

The Hall’s campus expands dramatically when you include the surrounding areas. Hop the train to the next town west, Maplewood, for a slice of pizza, or two stops and you are in Millburn with great sushi restaurants or just a few more and your are in Summit where you can do shopping at clothing stores like Benetton or Roots, Inc. And don’t forget about the Jersey Shore or skiing in Northern New Jersey in the winter.

PATRICK

Director of Athletics and Recreational Services

Patrick G. Lyons was named Director of Athletics and Recreational Services at Seton Hall University on February 22, 2011.

Lyons comes to Seton Hall after spending seven years as Iona College’s Director of Athletics. Lyons’ student-athlete centered vision was incorporated into several initiatives at Iona. Working closely with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Lyons emphasized a community service element for all of Iona’s 400+ student-athletes and 21 Division I athletic programs. He has also shown a deep commitment to student-athlete development and academic standards through additional support services and facilities in both the compliance and academic services offi ces.

Under Lyons, the Iona athletics department has seen unprecedented growth and success both on and off the fi elds of play. The men’s cross country team continued its storied success earning a second straight national runner-up fi nish at the NCAA Championship in November 2008. The program has fi nished in the Top-10 at the national championship in each of the last nine years. Along with the University of Wisconsin, no other program has seen the same success. The men’s and women’s basketball programs have established a reputation for being one of the top programs in the MAAC. The women enjoyed their most successful fi ve-year stint in program history and have made three postseason appearances in the last four seasons. The men’s program earned an NCAA Championship appearance in 2006, won 21 games in 2009-10 and has continued to rank among the leaders in the MAAC and the New York Metropolitan Area.

Other Gael programs that saw success under Lyons tutelage have been the women’s cross country team with fi ve straight MAAC Championships, the softball program earning its fi rst ever bid to the NCAA Championship in 2010, the men’s soccer program with a MAAC Regular Season Championship in 2009 and a MAAC fi nals appearance in 2010. The volleyball team reached the NCAA Championship in 2004 and returned to the MAAC fi nals in 2010. In addition, Iona’s women’s lacrosse and women’s water polo programs continued to excel in 2009-10.

Where Lyons truly made his mark at Iona has been in fundraising and improvements made to athletics facilities. The Iona Gaels Capital Improvements Fund was created by Lyons as the fi rst capital fundraising effort in the department’s history. Among several enhancements, the most dramatic and impressive changes were the opening of both the Hynes Athletics Center and the Judge Student-Athlete Academic Center in January of 2006. Lyons also oversaw the complete renovation of the varsity locker rooms - where each program now has its own space for the fi rst time in school history, the addition of a video screening room for its athletic programs as well as the resurfacing of both the Hynes Center basketball/volleyball arena fl oor and the surface of Mazzella Field, home

of the soccer and lacrosse programs. In addition, Iona created Rice Oval Softball fi eld, the fi rst on-campus home for the softball program.

Before elevating to his current role, Lyons was the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. In that role, he was responsible for all revenue generation by the athletics department with primary oversight of the department’s fundraising arm - The Goal Club. This included, but was not limited to, all fundraising activities and marketing for the department including the annual golf tournament, sponsorships, and the annual fund.

Prior to that role, Lyons served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. He oversaw all NCAA, MAAC, and institutional policies and regulations, as well as team scheduling, student-athlete fi nancial aid, the student-athlete advisory committee, and payroll for all staff as well as student-workers. Lyons also coordinated the NCAA certifi cation process, from the self study to on-campus visits.

As a coach, Lyons led the Iona golf team to its most successful four-year span. At the helm of the Gaels from 1998-02, he directed the squad to three MAAC Championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Golf Championship in each of his three full seasons.

A native of Providence, R.I., Lyons was a two-sport standout in hockey and golf. One of the most prolifi c scorers in school history, Lyons tallied 80 goals and 90 assists during his 86-game career and led all of NCAA Division I hockey in goals per game during the 1995-96 season. He captained the golf team during his junior and senior seasons and in 1996, received the Joseph O’Connell award, given annually to Iona’s most outstanding student-athlete.

In 1999, Lyons earned his master’s degree in teaching from Iona and earned an MBA from the Hagan School of Business in 2004. Lyons has also served as an adjunct professor in both the Biology department at Iona and the Sports Business Management program at Manhattanville College.

Lyons has served on several committees at the national and conference level. He is a member of the NCAA Division I Championships and Sports Management Cabinet where he serves as a liaison to the men’s and women’s ice hockey committees. Lyons served as the Chairman of MAAC Cross Country Committee and previously as chairman of the MAAC Committee on Athletics Administration. He also serves on the MAAC Marketing and Strategic Planning Committees.

Lyons is married to the former Rachel Cintolo, a pediatric nurse practitioner and clinical faculty at Columbia University.
