Webb Hatch begins his 13th season as the

head men's basketball coach at Frostburg State

University as well as his 38th year of coaching.

In his first 12 years at the helm, Hatch has

guided the Bobcats to 157 overall wins includ-

ing 90 in the AMCC and six victories in the

program's first year as a member of the CAC in

2010-11. The winningest coach in the program's

68-year history, Hatch has also led FSU to one

Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference

Tournament championship, a pair of AMCC

Tournament second-place finishes and one Eastern College Athletic Conference

South Region Runner-Up showing.

Last season, Hatch became the school's all-time winningest coach after leading

the team to 11 wins. With a victory over Stevenson in mid-January, Hatch sur-

passed Oscar Lewis for the all-time wins mark. Hatch and the Bobcats kicked off

the 2010-11 season in fine fashion with three-straight victories and the 2010 Pride

of Maryland Tournament Championship. FSU downed No. 11 ranked St. Mary's in

the title game to capture the school's first title in the POM Tournament.

In 2009-10, Frostburg State posted 17 overall wins and advanced to the AMCC

Tournament semifinals, both for the second-straight year. The Bobcats finished the

season 17-9 overall and 13-7 in the AMCC and led the league in scoring offense

(78.6), steals (11.2) and offensive rebounds (13.8). FSU also finished second

in blocked shots (3.0) and assists (16.2) and was third in scoring margin (+5.1).

FSU opened the season with wins in six of their first seven games, including two

victories at the 2009 Roanoke Tip-Off Tournament. The Bobcats also capped the

season with five-straight wins before being knocked out of the AMCC Tournament

by Medaille.

In 2008-09, coach Hatch guided Frostburg State to a 17-10 overall record, the

second most wins since taking over the program in 1999. The Bobcats finished

conference action 13-5, including a second-place finish in the regular season and

a trip to the AMCC Tournament semifinals. Defensively, FSU ranked near the top

of the AMCC. The Bobcats led the league in both offensive (14.04) and defensive

(24.81) rebounds, blocked shots (3.04) and steals (9.96) and were second in field

goal percentage defense (41.7), three-point FG percentage defense (30.3) and

turnover margin (+2.56). FSU posted a pair of five-game winning streaks during the

season and capped the year by winning the 2008-09 Schoenfeld Sportsmanship

Award for the AMCC.

Head Coach 13th Season

The Bobcats struggled during the 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons posting

12-15, 10-16 and 9-16 overall records, respectively, but FSU finished near the top of the

league in rebounding and steals both years. In 2007-08, the Bobcats were 8-2 at Bobcat

Arena including a perfect 5-0 in its last five home games. FSU also had a second team

all-conference selection from each year as Dan Ryley, Antoine McCall and Jade Belt each

garned the postseason honor. Marcus McIntyre also grabbed all-conference honorable

mention honors in 2005-06.

The 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons saw the Bobcats hover right around 15 wins

in each season. In 04-05, FSU was 14-12 overall and an even 9-9 in the AMCC, despite

losing five games by single digits. The Bobcats started the year strong with a 3-1 record

and the momentum carried through the season as FSU earned the No. 6 seed in the

AMCC Tournament. In 2003-04, the Bobcats won their last two regular-season

AMCC games, finished 15-13 overall and secured the No. 3 seed and a first-round

home game in the AMCC Tournament. In semifinals, the Bobcats downed No. 2 Pitt-

Greensburg 57-51 before dropping the title game, 44-42 to La Roche in overtime, for

the second time in three seasons.

In 2002-03, the Bobcats endured a tough 1-6 start before rebounding with five

wins in their next seven games. Season-ending injuries to two key players and the

loss of a third player to military service took their toll as the Bobcats dropped six

straight contests. However, FSU hung tough to win four of its final six regular-season

games before losing in overtime in the first round of the AMCC Tournament to finish

10-16 overall and 5-7 in the AMCC. The Bobcats suffered nine losses by 10 points or

less.

FSU combined for 36 wins over the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons, the second-

highest two-year total in the program’s history (trailing only the 37 wins from 1970-

1972).

In 2001-02, Hatch and the Bobcats posted a 16-12 overall record and a 9-3 mark

in the AMCC. The team advanced to the AMCC championship game for the second

straight year before falling in an exciting overtime contest.

In 2000-01, the Bobcats finished 20-10 overall and captured their first-ever

AMCC Tournament championship and earned a berth to the ECAC Southern Region

Championship Tournament for the eighth time in school history. FSU made a thrilling

run to the title game, downing Bethany (W.Va.), 99-83, and edging Alvernia, 77-71,

before falling to Kings, 70-60, in the championship contest. The Bobcats ranked 30th

in the nation in scoring (82.0 ppg) and 34th in rebounding margin (+5.5 rpg). The 20

wins were the second-highest in program history (trailing only the 1970-71 squad that

finished 24-4), and the AMCC title was the first conference tournament championship

in team history.

Hatch joined the Frostburg State staff in late August 1999 and needed just one

year to turn around the Bobcats. After a 6-19 overall record and a 2-10 mark in the

AMCC in his first season, Hatch’s second squad went 20-10 (8-4 AMCC), the big-

gest improvement from the previous season by any NCAA Division III program in the

country.

Hatch came to Frostburg after having served as an assistant at Virginia Military

Institute, his alma mater, for the 1998-99 season. Prior to his stint at VMI, Hatch was

the first-ever head men’s basketball coach at Division III Marymount University in

Arlington, Va., for 10 seasons, where he also served as the school’s assistant athletic

director and sports information director.

Hatch led Marymount to a 13-9 record in his debut season. In 1990-91, he earned

Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Saints to

the CAC regular-season championship and a 16-11 overall record. He also led

Marymount to an 18-10 record and the CAC Tournament championship in 1991-92.

His Marymount teams also advanced to the CAC tournament championship game in

the 1990-91 and 1995-96 seasons.

Prior to Marymount, Hatch served as an assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan

College in Norfolk, Va., from 1977 to 1987, where he helped coach the Marlins to two

Dixie Conference championships and three NCAA Division III Tournament appear-

ances.

Additionally, Hatch served as head coach at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in

Suffolk, Va., from 1975 to 1977. He coached the boys' team to a 23-3 record and the

VAAC championship in the 1976-77 season, and he was also an assistant football

coach and social studies teacher at the school.

Hatch began his coaching career as an assistant at Prince George (Va.) High

School in 1969-70 prior to a two-year tour of duty in the United States Army. He has

also organized, promoted and directed summer basketball camps for the past 30

years.

Hatch received his bachelor's degree in history from VMI in 1969 and later earned

a master's degree in education from Old Dominion University in 1985.

Sean Brown is in his fifth year as the top assistant for the Frostburg State men’s basketball program. He previously served as a graduate assistant in the 2004-05 season and a student assistant from 2002-04.

Coach Brown helped navigate the Bobcats through their first year as a member of the Capital Athletic Conference in 2010-11. Frostburg posted 11 wins and won the 2010 Pride of Maryland Tournament after defating No. 11 ranked St. Mary’s for the title. FSU finished the sea-son ranked second in the league in rebounding and fifth in scoring.

Frostburg State posted 17 wins and advanced to the AMCC Tournament semifinals for the second-straight season in 2009-10. The Bobcats finished 17-10 overall and were fourth in the league at 13-7. FSU opened the regular season 6-1 with two wins at the 2009 Roanoke Tip-Off Tournament. The Bobcats finished off the season with five wins in their final six games, including an 89-81 win over Mt. Aloysius in the AMCC Tournament opening round.

In 2008-09, Brown helped the Bobcats to a 17-10 overall record and a 13-5 AMCC mark. FSU finished second in the conference regular season and advanced to the AMCC Tournament semifinals.

Prior to returning to Frostburg, Brown served as an assistant coach for two years at the South Side Academy in Baltimore, Md. While there, he assisted with player develop-ment, monitored academics and assisted with the schedule and break down of practices.

Brown was a former standout player for the Frostburg State Bobcats. Brown began his playing career at Frostburg State in 1997-98 before transferring to Prince George’s Community College for a year. There, he earned team MVP honors after averaging 14.0 points and 7.0 assists per game. Brown then returned to FSU for his junior and senior seasons and helped lead the team to a 36-22 record, the second-best two-year win total in school history.

As a junior, Brown sparked the Bobcats to a 20-10 record, the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament championship and a runner-up showing in the Eastern College Athletic Conference South Championship. He averaged 11.8 points, led the team in steals (66), assists (167) and three-point percentage (46.2) and shot 51.3 percent from the floor to earn All-AMCC honorable mention honors.

As a senior, Brown helped the Bobcats to a 16-12 record and a runner-up finish in the AMCC Tournament. He earned first-team All-AMCC honors after averaging 15.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.6 assists, while pacing the Bobcats with 69 steals.

Brown earned his bachelor’s degree from Frostburg State in recreation and parks management in 2003 and his masters degree in education from FSU in 2005. He is married to Jennifer Edith Brown and together they have three children; sons Sean (10) and Jalen (6) and daughter Khloe (4).

Brennan McCarthy begins his first season as a graduate assistant with the Frostburg State University men’s basketball program in 2011-12.

McCarthy joins the FSU coaching ranks after a collegiate playing career at both SUNY Brockport and SUNY Cobleskill. He helped guide Brockport to the NCAA Tournament in 2008-09 and was instrumental in Cobleskill’s run to the NJCAA Final Four in 2007-08. That same year, Cobleskill finished the season 26-8 and McCarthy was the Coaches Award winner.

Off the court, McCarthy was a Dean’s List student at Brockport, member of the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in educa-tion and was a part of the physical education majors club. He was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for both Cobleskill and the North East Athletic Conference (NEAC).

McCarthy has served as an assistant basketball coach in both the high school and collegiate ranks since 2003. Last year, he was the assistant basketball coach for the Cobleskill-Richmondville Boys Varsity team. He has also coached at camps such as the Jim Baron Basketball Camp at the Univ. of Rhode Island and the Tiger Basketball Camp on the SUNY Cobleskill campus.

McCarthy earned his associate of arts degree in liberal arts and sciences in May 2008 from SUNY Cobleskill. He later earned a bachelor of science degree in physical educa-tion from Brockport in December 2010.

With the graduation of five seniors from last year, many people might expect the 2011-12 ver-sion of the Frostburg State University men’s basketball team to be young and in a rebuilding mode. However, the Bobcats boast another large roster highlighted by eight returning players, including three starters. FSU will also add nine talented newcomers into the mix.

Senior Maurice Williams and Bradley Nunn have been chosen as team captains and 13th-year head coach Webb Hatch is optimistic about his squad as it heads into its second year as a member of the Capital Athletic Conference.

“We would love to send our five seniors off with a berth in the NCAA Tournament,” stated coach Hatch. “Despite losing five seniors from last year, we aren’t in a rebuilding mode and the team knows that we can compete for a CAC Title.”

Frostburg finished last season second in the league in rebounding (38.2) and fifth in scoring (71.1), but will need to improve on its shooting percentage (40.9) if it wants to make a run at the league championship.

“We have the potential to be a quicker team with better depth than last year,” added Hatch when talking about the versatility of his 17-man roster. “We have also improved on our shooting this year with our returning core of players and the nine new guys.”

Williams and Nunn headline another five-member senior class this season. Both players are excellent leaders, committed to the team and are hard workers. Together, they started 39 games a year ago and combined to score nearly 16 points per game.

Williams returns as the second leading scorer on the roster this year after totaling 291 points. He came on strong late in the season averaging 17.1 ppg over the final seven games, including a season-high 30 against York (Pa.). Williams is also an excellent rebounder and should improve on his 4.8 rpg average from a year ago.

Nunn is one of the best defenders and rebounders on the roster and the coaching staff expects him to contribute more on the offensive end during his final season. A true workhorse, Nunn returns as the leading rebounder from a year ago (5.0 rpg), including a team-high 50 boards on the offensive end. The second-chance opportunities should lead to more of an offensive presence this year.

A pair of newcomers should have an immediate impact and play an important role in the success of the Bobcats this season. Junior Kwambina Coker and freshman Jabari Kamau bring added scoring and rebounding potential to a roster laden with returning players. Coker is the tallest member of the team at 6’6’’ and is in excellent shape heading into the season opener. Meanwhile, Kamau brings a high energy level to every practice and is an athletic player and great rebounder. The duo should help decrease the scoring load from Williams and Nunn.

Not to be overlooked this year, junior DeSean Antoine is a versatile player that has the talent and ability to play multiple positions. He is in prime position for a breakout season after a strong finish to 2010-11. Antoine appeared in 11 games, but started six of the final seven down stretch. He averaged 19.8 points over the final six contests, including a season-high 31 in a win over Stevenson. Despite his limited number of games, he finished second on the team in scoring (12.3), second in three-pointers made (19) and third in assists (28).

Arguably the most improved player over the last couple of years is senior Troy Dockett. He had another good preseason, improving on his defensive skills, and enters the season as the potential starting two guard. Dockett started nine games a year ago, averaged 7.1 points per contest and made 15 three-pointers.

Ladi Odunlami and Justin Redfield round out the five seniors on this year’s roster. Odunlami is one of the strongest players on the team and is a very good defender and rebounder while Redfield is a solid contributor off the bench. They combined to play in 13 games last year and should com-pete for more playing time this year.

Jordan Zang, the only sophomore on the roster, and junior Brian Biscoe add depth to their forward and guard positions. Zang appeared in three games and is the second tallest member of the team at 6’5’’, while Biscoe scored eight points in five games and is a reserve point guard.

The seven remaining newcomers, including six freshmen, provide talent and depth to every posi-tion on the court.

Freshmen David Patrick and Bobby Bates are both point guards, but have drastically differ-ent styles. Patrick is the taller of the two guards at 6’1’’ and is a physically stronger style of point guard. Bates is very quick and adds an elusive style to his game. He is very unselfish and is a good shooter. Both players are very comfortable with the ball in their hands and their different skill sets provide a nice compliment to one another. Bates was a First Team All-Anne Arundel County selection as a senior.

Freshman forward Justin Armstrong is the only left-handed player on the roster. He is a solid wing player that can shoot the ball effectively and has adjusted well to the college game. As a senior, Armstrong was selected as a Baltimore County All-Star.

Guard/forward Tyler Logan is a highly-recruited freshman that fits coach Hatch’s system per-fectly. He is a very complete and versatile player than can shoot, defend and run the floor. Logan was named to the 2011 Prince George’s County 4A Team by the Washington Post.

Freshman guard/forward Larry Ennels II, is a very long player with a wide wing span. He should see time as he becomes more comfortable with the college game. Ennels was named Towson High School’s Most Valuable Player in 2011 and earned two scholastic athlete awards for his work in the classroom.

Freshman guard/forward Shawn Henson has a lot of natural ability and will see more playing time as he adjusts to the college game. Henson is a three-time team MVP at Polytech High School.

Junior Tyrone Wheeler is a very athletic guard/forward and has been the biggest surprise of the preseason. Having not played competitively for several years, he is adjusting to the college game and could be a contributor as the season progresses.

ScheduleDespite the daunting task of competing in the ever-tough Capital Athletic Conference, the

Bobcats will face a brutal non-conference slate as well. The Bobcats jump right in the fire from the season’s opening tipoff as they will have to defend

their 2010 title at the seventh annual Pride of Maryland Tournament. The yearly tournament features a battle between the state’s nine Division III schools. FSU knocked off No. 11 ranked St. Mary’s to earn the crown last season. Frostburg opens the season and POMT with McDaniel on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Prior to the holiday break, the Bobcats will battle non-conference opponents Catholic (21-9), Bethany (21-8) and Penn State Altoona (4-21). Catholic advanced to the ECAC South Regional Championship while Bethany won the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Tournament Title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

In late December, Frostburg travels south to the Hampden-Sydney Tournament before facing Eastern Mennonite (22-5) on January 9 in its final non-conference game of the season. EMU won the ODAC regular-season title a year ago.

The CAC will once again be tough to navigate. Reigning league-champion St. Mary’s enters the season ranked No. 15 in the country. Wesley (18-11) and York (17-9) round out the top three in last year’s standings while Mary Washington (16-10) and Hood (13-13) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Rounding out the CAC are Marymount (6-19), who should again be very competitive, followed by Stevenson (6-19) and Salisbury (12-15) who both have new head coaches.

From its inaugural class of 57 students, Frostburg State University has

grown to a present day enrollment of over 5,000 students.

Its physical plant, once limited to a single building, Old Main, which housed

classrooms and a library, has also grown to over 30 facilities including

classroom buildings, residence halls, the Lewis J. Ort Library, the Harold

J. Cordts Physical Education Center, the Lane University Center, the

Performing Arts Center and the Compton Science Center, all situated on

260 beautiful acres.

Opened in 1902 as State Normal School No. 2, the University owes its

existence to the tenacity of J. Benson Oder, editor of the Frostburg Mining

Journal, and the citizens of Frostburg who, in spite of political barriers,

raised funds and purchased the site on which “Old Main,” the University’s

first building, is located.

Principal Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh and three faculty instructed the first Normal School class; in addition, the other faculty taught 151 children in the Model School. The Normal

School students, who were high school students having to meet no requirements other than age (girls, 16; boys, 17), had but one two-year course of study: elementary education.

The curriculum consisted of Latin, mathematics, history, rhetoric and literature, natural and physical sciences, drawing, music, calisthenics, psychology, philosophy of education,

philosophy of school management, pedagogy, observation, practice work and primary manual training.

Over the years, the name of the institution has reflected the changes in the scope of its educational mission. In 1935, State Normal School No. 2 became State Teachers College at

Frostburg, a four-year college that offered a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. In 1963, the name became Frostburg State College, and finally in 1987, with the strong

support of the local civic and business community, became Frostburg State University, an indication of its growing resources, diversity and excellence in educational opportunities

for the region and the state.

In 1988, FSU became a constituent institution of the University System of Maryland, comprised of 12 institutions and two regional higher education centers.

Throughout its growth, the University has emphasized excellence in teaching. Over 80 percent of the full-time faculty hold Ph.D.s or terminal degrees from institutions that are

among the most prestigious in the nation. Faculty scholarship has led to scholarly books, manuals and journals, as well as numerous articles and reviews. This excellence in faculty

has resulted in superior results for students. FSU has been ranked first among its peers for the number of doctorates per 100 baccalaureate degrees awarded. In the same study,

FSU was ranked second in the percentage of national, prestigious awards received by faculty. These have included Fulbrights and significant grants from the National Endowment

for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts and other national associations.

At the same time, the University has developed comparable excellence in academic programs, research, consulting, cultural and athletic events and facilities. In recent years the

campus has consistently received a superior rating, the highest state award given for facilities and maintenance.

Today, the University’s mission and services have expanded significantly. Over 400 full-time administrators and support staff and more than 200 full-time faculty serve the educa-

tional needs of students who come not only from throughout the United States,

but also the world. These students have a choice of 42 major programs of

study leading to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Fine

Arts, Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies and Bachelor of Science

in Urban and Regional Planning degrees as well as graduate degrees in

applied ecology and conservation biology, business administration, counseling

psychology, education, wildlife/fisheries biology, park and recreation resource

management, teaching and applied computer science. In addition, several pre-

professional programs are offered.

Frostburg State University continues its pursuit of excellence, a tradition which

now spans over a century.
