cationalneeds.FromitsfirstlocationinArmstrongHouseindowntownSavannahtoitscurrenthomeonascenic268-acrelotoffofAbercorn,theuniversityhasbecomeoneofthefinesteducationalinstitutionsintheSoutheasternUnitedStates.Lastyear,Armstrongcelebratedits75than-niversaryasapremierinstitutionofhighereducationintheCoastalEmpire. ArmstrongJuniorCollegewasestablishedbytheMay-orofSavannahandotherpublicofficialsin1935.HousedinthebeautifulandhistoricArmstrongHouse,agifttothecityfromthefamilyofGeorgeF.Armstrong,ArmstrongJu-niorCollegegrewovertheyearstooccupyeightadditionalbuildingsintheForsythParkandMontereySquareareas. Dr.KendallBlanchard,presidentofGeor-giaSouthwesternStateUniversity,beganthesecondofhistwo-yeartermastheleaguepresidentinJulyof2011. Enteringits22ndyearofexistencein2011-12,thePeachBeltConferencehasbecomeoneoftheeliteDivisionIIconfer-encesinthenation.Sinceitsinceptionin1990-91,thePeachBelthasdevelopedaconsistenthistoryofexcellencewhichcontinuestothisdaywith30nationalchampionshipsand27nationalfinalists. Startingwithonlytwochampionshipsin1991,inmen’sandwomen’sbasket-ball,theconferencehasexpandedto13championshipsportswiththeadditionofwomen’sgolfinthefallof2009. TheconferencetracesitsrootsbacktoNovemberof1988when11schoolsfirstmetinGreenville,S.C.toformaDivisionIIconference.FollowingasecondmeetingonDec.3,1989,fiveofthose11schools,plustwoothers,formedthePeachBeltandbeginplayinfall1990. ThePeachBeltwaslessthanayearoldbeforecapturinganationalchampion-ship.TheColumbusStategolfteamtookthehonorbywinningthe1992nationalcrown,thefirstofthreegolfchampion-shipstheCougarsown.Oneyearlater,theLandermen’stennisteambegantheirrecord-breakingrunofeightstraightnationaltitles,thefirstPBCdynasty.Sincethen,USCAmen’sgolfhaswonthreestraightnationaltitlesfrom2004-06whileArmstrongwomen’stennishascapturedfourtitlesoverall. The2010-11seasonwasoneofthemostmemorabletheleaguehaseverhad.Clay-tonStatebecamethefirstPBCwomen’sbasketballteamtocaptureanationalchampionship.TheColumbusStatemen’stennisteamreachedthenationalsemifinalswhiletheClaytonStateandArmstrongAtlanticStatewomen’stennisteamsalsoplayedinthenationalsemifinals.TheNorthGeorgiasoftballteammadeanunprecedentedthirdstraightappearanceintheNCAAWomen’sCollegeWorldSeries,whileColumbusState’sMeshackKoyiakiregisteredarunner-upfinishattheMen’sCrossCountryNationalChampion-ships.Inall,46PeachBeltteamsmadeappearancesintheNCAApostseason,includingsevenmen’stennisteamsandsixeachinthesportsofmen’sgolfandwomen’stennis.
