Aftertwobelowaverageseasonsandarosterthatlacksasinglesenior,headcoachMattSchmidt’spros-pectsfortheupcoming2011-12ArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversitywomen’sbasketballseasonmightbechallengedatbest. ButtotalktocoachSchmidtandthemembersofthePiratesquad,theoptimismforArmstrongwomen’sbasketballisprofound. Sixplayersreturnfromlastseason’ssquadthatwent8-18overalland4-12inthePeachBeltConfer-ence,andcoachSchmidtwentnearandfartofindninenewcomerstojoinArmstrongfor2011-12andformanintriguingteamthatlookstoprovethedoubterswrongintheultra-competitivePeachBeltConference. AftermanningthestartingpointguardspotforherfirsttwoseasonsatArmstrong,juniorJazmin Walker (5-7,Jr.,Lawrenceville,Ga.)willhavealittlecompe-

cationalneeds.FromitsfirstlocationinArmstrongHouseindowntownSavannahtoitscurrenthomeonascenic268-acrelotoffofAbercorn,theuniversityhasbecomeoneofthefinesteducationalinstitutionsintheSoutheasternUnitedStates.Lastyear,Armstrongcelebratedits75than-niversaryasapremierinstitutionofhighereducationintheCoastalEmpire. ArmstrongJuniorCollegewasestablishedbytheMay-orofSavannahandotherpublicofficialsin1935.HousedinthebeautifulandhistoricArmstrongHouse,agifttothecityfromthefamilyofGeorgeF.Armstrong,ArmstrongJu-niorCollegegrewovertheyearstooccupyeightadditionalbuildingsintheForsythParkandMontereySquareareas. In1959,asArmstrongCollegeofSavannah,itbecameatwo-yearunitoftheUniversitySystem.TheBoardofRegentsconferredfour-yearstatusonArmstrongin1964andthecollegemovedtoa250-acrelocation,agiftfromDonaldLivingstonandtheMillsB.LaneFoundation,inDecemberof1965.AdditionalbuildingsjoinedtheeightoriginalstructuresasArmstrongaddedprofessionalandgraduateprogramsandtripledinsize. ArmstrongsponsorselevenintercollegiatesportsandisachartermemberofthePeachBeltConference,formedin1991.Women’ssoccerandwomen’sgolfdebutedin2005-06andmen’scrosscountrywasreinstatedin2009,joiningmen’sandwomen’sbasketball,volleyball,baseball,men’sandwomen’stennis,men’sgolfandsoftballassportsthatArmstrongspon-sors.In2008-09,theArmstrongmen’sandwomen’stennisteamseachcapturedNCAADivisionIINationalChampion-shipsforasecondstraightyear,withthewomen’stennisteamearningthe“three-peat”ofthreestraighttitlesin2010. SweanybringstoArmstrongextensiveexperienceinNCAADivisionIIathletics,includingmorethan10yearswiththepremiereDivisionIIprogramatGVSU.Sincebeingnamedseniorassociateathleticsdirectorin2007,shehasbeenresponsibleforbudget,personnelandfacilitiesmanagement.Herdutieshaveincludeddirectsupervi-sionofsevencoaches,overseeinggameandeventoperations,aswellasmanagementofallathleticspersonnel.Inaddition,shecoordinatedallaspectsofcomplianceandeligibilityformorethan500studentathletes. Enteringits22ndyearofexistencein2011-12,thePeachBeltConferencehasbecomeoneoftheeliteDivisionIIconfer-encesinthenation.Sinceitsinceptionin1990-91,thePeachBelthasdevelopedaconsistenthistoryofexcellencewhichcontinuestothisdaywith30nationalchampionshipsand27nationalfinalists. Startingwithonlytwochampionshipsin1991,inmen’sandwomen’sbasket-ball,theconferencehasexpandedto13championshipsportswiththeadditionofwomen’sgolfinthefallof2009. TheconferencetracesitsrootsbacktoNovemberof1988when11schoolsfirstmetinGreenville,S.C.toformaDivisionIIconference.FollowingasecondmeetingonDec.3,1989,fiveofthose11schools,plustwoothers,formedthePeachBeltandbeginplayinfall1990. ThePeachBeltwaslessthanayearoldbeforecapturinganationalchampion-ship.TheColumbusStategolfteamtookthehonorbywinningthe1992nationalcrown,thefirstofthreegolfchampion-shipstheCougarsown.Oneyearlater,theLandermen’stennisteambegantheirrecord-breakingrunofeightstraightnationaltitles,thefirstPBCdynasty.Sincethen,USCAmen’sgolfhaswonthreestraightnationaltitlesfrom2004-06whileArmstrongwomen’stennishascapturedfourtitlesoverall. The2010-11seasonwasoneofthemostmemorabletheleaguehaseverhad.Clay-tonStatebecamethefirstPBCwomen’sbasketballteamtocaptureanationalchampionship.TheColumbusStatemen’stennisteamreachedthenationalsemifinalswhiletheClaytonStateandArmstrongAtlanticStatewomen’stennisteamsalsoplayedinthenationalsemifinals.TheNorthGeorgiasoftballteammadeanunprecedentedthirdstraightappearanceintheNCAAWomen’sCollegeWorldSeries,whileColumbusState’sMeshackKoyiakiregisteredarunner-upfinishattheMen’sCrossCountryNationalChampion-ships.Inall,46PeachBeltteamsmadeappearancesintheNCAApostseason,includingsevenmen’stennisteamsandsixeachinthesportsofmen’sgolfandwomen’stennis.
