ActivitiesHoward Van Valzah will host a shop tour on August 20 at 9:30;  he is located at 11188 Walton Dr., Roscoe IL (815-623-3183) which is just north of Rockford. We will meet at Panera in Glen Ellyn at 8:00 and plan to leave promptly at 8:10. After the tour Howard will show us the best place for lunch in Roscoe. If anyone is interested we can stop at Hardwood Connection in Sycamore on the way home.

This might seem like a long way to go for a shop tour but I think it will be well worth the trip. For those of you who don't know Howard, he is a real tool "junky". His shop is 2200 sq. ft. consisting of several separate rooms. There is a wood milling room;  fabrication room for sanding, metal  working and welding equipment and many hand tools;  a third room contains his Festool shop, lathe shop, stained glass shop and an antique tool display. This is no ordinary shop but one to be seen to be appreciated.

There are 10 members signed up for Ken Everett's class on framing and matting which will be held on Sept. 10 and 17. I have scheduled members Hochmuth, Burgeson, O'Malley, Mallo and Trainor for Sept. 10 and Harvey, Webster, Abrams, Fischer and Saga for the 17th. If you need to switch dates, contact someone in the other class to work it out. Each class can accommodate 6 members, so, there is room for 2 additional members to sign up. So far, only Bill Hochmuth has paid the $15 charge. I need checks payable to DuPage Woodworkers Club from the following: Burgeson, Mallo, Harvey, Trainor, Webster, Abrams, Fischer, Saga and O’Malley. You can send them to me or bring them to the August meeting. The class will discuss and demonstrate framing but will concentrate primarily on the layout, measuring and cutting of mats. Each person can bring their

Nick Page will host a tour of his shop at 670 Welch St., Gilberts IL. on Sept. 24 from 9:30 to 12. Coffee and donuts will be served.

A tour of Total Tooling Technology, 1475 Elmhurst Rd., Elk Grove Village is scheduled for Oct. 12 at 9:30. This is a "coffee" day at Panera so we can carpool leaving Panera at 9:00 A.M. Total Tooling is a sophisticated commercial sharpening company that uses the latest in computer technology. Some of its customers include Baker Hill Furniture and Designed Stairs which are companies the club has toured. Club members can bring saw blades and router bits to be sharpened. The cost is about $12 for blades and $4 and up for bits.

Anderson took wood projects to display on July 28th at the Sheldon Peck Homestead for the Lombard Historical Society.

Despite a low turnout, it was an enjoyable visit with a chance to look through the oldest house in Lombard (1840s) and to learn a little about how the Lombard Historical Society operates.

Enter and ExitSince St. James church has been gracious

enough to let us use their hall for our meeting, we are glad to get a chance once in awhile to return the favor. Rick Ogren made new “Enter” and “Exit” signs for the parking

lot at the church. Bill Hochmuth, Dennis Devitt, Ernesto Rivera, Lear Keller, and Thomas Milleman along with Rick Ogren turned out on a hot morning to help get the signs installed.

If you live near Addison or West Chicago, stop by to see our display in their library. You may have noticed that a lot of visitors mention that they first heard about the club from a library display.

Advances in From Our WorkshopShow Table

The From Our Workshop segment at general meetings is a popular part of our meetings. People like to see what others are doing in their workshops…how they did what they did. Seeing and hearing about it draws great interest and we encourage more people to participate. But for some, the idea of standing in front of 80 to 100 club members describing their project may be off putting. It’s just not comfortable for them.

For these folks, we’ll introduce a “show” table. It will not be all that different than the “Show and Tell” table which we have always had. You’ll put your project on the “show” table, fill out the form and that is it. You won’t have to speak to the crowd. If you choose, you can be available before the meeting, during the break or after the meeting to discuss your project with individuals. The purpose of this is to enable more individuals to participate in displaying their projects in a manner comfortable for them.

PhotosDigital photos are great when a project can’t

be brought in to the meeting. Paper photos don’t do well as they are, in most cases, too small for the members to see clearly and might do best on the “show” table. To work around this, send me your digital photos a few days in advance of the meeting. I will put them in a slide show which will be loaded onto the computer prior to the meeting. If more than 1 person submits photos in this way, I’ll make a slide show with segments for each submission so there is only one interruption to get the slide show on the screen. We will have a remote to control the slide show so you won’t have to fumble with the computer. Limit your submission to 4 or fewer photos. Digital photos delivered at the

meeting probably won’t be shown as doing so interrupts and delays the flow of the From Our Workshop presentation.

These advances in the photo guidelines are intended to eliminate unnecessary interruptions in the From Our Workshop segment while keeping the segment interesting and informative. This stems from the Board’s efforts to shorten the front half of the meetings and get to the “good stuff” earlier.

From Our LibraryJust a reminder that we are in the process of culling some older books and VCRs from our library that have not been  checked  out in recent years in order to make space for new resources that will be purchased in coming months.

Be sure to stop by at the next monthly meeting to see what is available.  Proceeds from the sale of these older books will be used to purchase new resources. As you prepare to begin that new project, do not forget to check out the library resources to see if there is something available that might be of help in the design, construction or finish of the project. A searchable listing of the library resources can be found from the DPWW home page.

July AuctionWhit Anderson

There were a lot of steals at the July auction. There were several pieces of good

sized equipment, hand power tools, hand tools, wood, hardware, and more. The auction is a great place for those getting their shop started as well as those who see a must-have tool at a good price. There was even a bag of unknown woodworking related substances that Milford Lau got for a buck. I still don’t know if he won or lost on that one.

The club would like to thank several members who donated items that were auctioned to benefit the club.

There were lots of people helping out which eased the process. A special thanks to the silver tongued Rich Rossio who as auctioneer wrangled the last dollar for each item and to Jerry Johnson who made sure the whole auction was organized and ran smoothly.

Rockler Tool SwapIf you missed the auction, or have

something you forgot to sell at the auction, Rockler (Schaumburg) is planning an event they call the "Tool Swap" on August 20, from 10–2. People with tools, wood, or other wood related items to sell can bring their own table and set up on the sidewalk in front of the store. Rockler will not be involved in the sales, they are providing the space only.

Rockler Manager Diane Cegielski says, "Last time we did this we had a big turn-out, you might want to get there early to set up." Rockler is promoting this sale to customers in the store and it will be in their email advertising. To bring more people to the store they are planning a day full of demos.

Remember, bring your own table if you plan to sell.

Missing Corner ClampLen Swanson

Someone bought a picture frame miter clamp at the auction. While cleaning my shop, I found one of the corner clamps that had apparently fallen out of the box. I will bring it to the August meeting. Call me (630-469-5376) if you need it sooner.

August Toy of the MonthHelp make toys to be distributed at

Christmas! The August toy of the month is a panel truck.

All toys to be donated need to be turned in at the November meeting. If you have already started some toys, get them finished. If you haven’t started yet, the panel truck is a great project because they are simple and fast (especially since Stan has wheels and axles).

Stan Anderson has directions, or download the directions and get started. Stan has templates, wheels, and axles which you can get at the meeting.

Remember, no finishes on toys.

The directions are available online at:www.whitanderson.com/wood/dpww/tom

Christmas Toy MakingBill Hochmuth

A group of DPWW members gathered on Saturday, July 23 to work on toys that will be distributed at Christmastime.

The first shout out goes to Woodcraft Woodridge for letting us use many of their tools as well as their classroom.  It was very nice to work in a spacious environment where we could move between equipment without bumping into one another.  The second thank you goes to Owl Hardwood who once again donated cutoffs and exceptionally good pricing for wood for the toys we make.  Next

in line is the Franklin Glue company who donated three cases of sample size Tight-bond II glue; our members are appreciative of all of these generous donations and the corporations they represent.

The really important part of the day was accomplished by the participants Bruce Kinney, Al Cheeks, Jack Pine, Dennis Devitt, Paul Osenkarski, Mark Halla, Stan Anderson, Dale Gustafson, Bob Fisher, Tiffany Hayes, Dom Custable and Bill Hochmuth.  In the early afternoon Charlie Scheffel and friend Ken Prosek stopped by to be sure we were doing things correctly and then of course pitched in to crank out many more toys.  We were pleased to be visited by the delightful Heather McDonald from the Tribune Company who wrote a story for the newspaper.

Guesstimates for production vary between 150 and 200 toys produced, some which still need finishing touches.  We made cars, whale crayon holders and African animals all of which our young recipients should have a joyous time playing with.

As has been mentioned many times in the past and will be mentioned many more times in the near future these toy making days do not replace the exemplary efforts made by

Dale Gustafson and Dom Custable

our membership in years past to produce toys on their own.  The goal of these three toy making days was to increase our output from 900 to at least 1200 toys annually, and we all need to contribute even more to reach these goals.  If there's anything any board member can do to help you with your desire to produce toys for needy children please contact any one of us at any time.  Remember the newsletter publishes the toy of the month where plans of toys, old and new, can be reviewed and even downloaded for printing.

The last toy making day of this year will be October 29 at Bill Hochmuth’s house. There will be a signup sheet, come and spend part of a day making toys for children and getting to know some of your fellow club members a little better.

We all have our reasons for belonging to the DuPage Woodworkers; some of us enjoy the camaraderie and friendships that we've made, toy making days are just one way to make friends that may just last a lifetime.  And remember, you can’t beat the doughnuts, coffee, pop, pizza and the really fine cabernet (well, maybe not the cabernet).

The Presidentʼs CornerElectionsNow that the dog days of summer are, hopefully, over (although I certainly gained a lot of air-conditioned shop time during those 90+ degree days) it's time to look forward as we approach the end of the year and the DuPage Woodworkers annual

elections. If you dream Cinderella dreams, keep a notepad on the night table for those ah-ha moments in the dead of the night or just spend time thinking (think back to my thinking column) it's time to organize your thoughts towards giving back to the organization that's hopefully provided you with a great deal of enjoyment this year.

The DuPage Woodworkers by-laws mandate that in the month of August a nominating committee be appointed to solicit, interview and vet potential candidates for the board and committee positions of our club; this has been accomplished and you can read more about it in another part of this newsletter.

Wikipedia’s definition of volunteering “is the practice of people working on behalf of others or a particular cause without payment for their time and services.” However, hidden further down in the definition is another all too meaningful part of the definition; folks volunteer for “a variety of other reasons many of which could be considered self-serving”.

This is my fourth year with the board of the DuPage Woodworkers and while I can't deny that some effort is involved, I can say unequivocally the rewards far outweigh the effort. Most importantly are the friendships with people I didn't even know before I joined the club, I am certain these friendships will be sustained even if our club dries up and blows away with the wind. I learned a lot

Bill Hochmuth

about woodworking from our diverse programs touching on all of the kinds of woodworking you can imagine; our show and tell caused me to chat with members who made items that interested and sometimes fascinated me. What a tremendous wealth of talent your peers exhibit. Although I managed my own company for 27 years the DuPage Woodworkers taught me a lot about people management; volunteers certainly require a different mindset than employees.

I've been disappointed as well; with a 170+ member organization I thought for sure we'd have to limit some of the events and activities planned by your board. I was discouraged when so few people came out for many of the occasions. My thanks to the people who do help, especially the recent installation of the enter and exit signs for the church; but only 4 volunteers out of 170? So far the response to my tabletop refinishing e-mail has resulted in 3 e-mail responses and one phone call, and two of the e-mails were from the same people who helped with the signs.

Back from the dark side I'll finish this diatribe by saying it's exciting, it's fun, it's educational, it's challenging and most of all it's rewarding to be a part of the leadership of this club. Please, when the nominating committee approaches you to ask if you'd like to run for one of the board or committee positions don't step back, step forward and tell her/him how proud you'd be to give your all to help the DuPage Woodworkers grow stronger. You can help do more for our toys for needy kids program, expand into the community with programs for young people in schools, with classes for Cub, Girl and Boy Scouts, to provide birdhouses for seniors in assisted living facilities, to publicize our club through the library display program and so many more things that help our club; and in doing so I promise you the thing you'll help the most is yourself.

Congratulations to these three DuPage Woodworkers!

The auction was a success with a total sales of $2,787 for 178 items sold. Thanks to the members who donated items to be sold with the proceeds going to the club – result $98. Recommendations for further improvements have been formulated with the main rule change being that items brought to the auction will only be auctioned. No side sales will be permitted as they just detract from the auction activity. The board rewarded Rich and Jerry with a “Good job!”

Stan has 355 completed toys and has 503 kits out for fabrication for a total of 858 if all of the kits are completed. He noted that Walmart made a generous donation of crayons. There is another Toy Workshop day planned for October 29 at Bill’s shop. The Toy of the Month is a delivery van; aka, soccer mom’s van.

Jack placed the library displays in the Addison and West Chicago libraries.

The member survey committee has completed its discussions with most of Whit’s analysis and recommendations already implemented. The main item to be worked was the length of the non-program portion of the general meeting that was dealt with at

Secretaryʼs Report Board Meeting Minutes of August 1, 2011

Bill Hochmuth called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Present were Bruce Kinney, Whit Anderson, Stan Anderson, Rick Ogren, Keith Rosche, Al Cheeks, Jack Pine, Dale Gustafson, Len Swanson, Wayne Maier, Tony

Evansky, and Jerry Johnson. Reminder: Any club member is invited to attend board meetings.

There has been a long standing problem that the non-program portions of the general meetings have been eating into the time available for the program. It was decided to eliminate portfolio announcements by chairs of Program, Activities, Exhibits, and Prizes. The relevant information is contained in the newsletter and Bill will make mention of the major items and refer questions to the appropriate person to be answered at break or after the meeting. It was also decided to separate the Show and Tell tables (From Our Workshop) into a Show table and a Tell table. Some members may choose to only display their work (Show table) while others may want to share a specific process or problem they had during the creation of the piece (Tell table).

As we prepare for nominating a slate for the 2012 officer election, Bill asked that each board member review their position description contained in the Constitution and By-Laws. These will also be used in the review of the two documents that are five years old. Bill named Jerry to lead the formal review and Rick and Dale to also serve on the review committee. The documents should be added to the web site.

Dale announced that the library sale of

the beginning of the board meeting.

It was noted that the coffee service is working better at the general meetings. Don Burgeson has even provided some extra goodies.

Bill has firmed up the calendar with the church through March 2012. Two general meeting dates of note: November 30 (fifth Wednesday) and December 15 (third Thursday).

The meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m.

Sharpen Your Drill BitsThanks to Rick Ogren, the club has added a

Drill Doctor to our collection of tools. The Drill Doctor is a machine that sharpens drill bits.

If your collection of drill bits isn’t as sharp as they once were, you can borrow the Drill Doctor and sharpen the whole set. Once you are set up and running you can probably sharpen more than a bit a minute.

We have the following tools which members can borrow; Work Sharp sharpening system, Delta scroll saw, moisture meter, metal detector, and the Drill Doctor. This equipment is available to members by contacting Wayne Maier at (630) 303-1341.

Period Furniture SIG ReportLee NyeJuly 18, 2011 Meeting

Don Carkhuff was the main speaker at our July meeting, presenting a great overview of Queen Anne period furniture legs and the Cabriole style leg in particular. Don’s experience as an Industrial Arts teacher of teenagers helped him keep an audience of cantankerous guys and gals attentive to his presentation. He clearly has significant experience building period furniture and had plenty to share with the group, both his successes and mistakes. He is also a wise furniture builder, very focused on pleasing his customer (primarily his wife who happens to love the Queen Anne style). (Note from chair – I have found this strategy also helps grease the skids for tool acquisition. There is rarely a spouse requested project that cannot be used to justify new tools!)

While many of us may know the general procedures for making a Cabriole leg, Don offered some great insights and tips for the process. First, in wood selection, cut blanks so that the grain direction is rift-sawn, thus exposing a quarter-sawn grain appearance on the adjacent show faces. Don likes the cathedral grain patterns, so he often chooses to orient the blank to expose a flat- sawn appearance on the show faces. Whatever your preference is, the mix of QS and FS on the show faces is to be avoided – therefore, use of the usual turning blanks is not recommended for legs. A second tip is planning for extra material on the leg blank to provide for the skirt transition pieces so

that the wood color and grain match the leg itself. A corollary to this is to save some matching wood to overlay any sapwood that might be exposed when you saw the top block section of the legs. Don also offered some tips for cutting blanks with the proper grain orientation from available material. Glue-ups of material to make leg blanks may result in unsightly grain line mismatches as Don related from his early experience.

The next SIG meeting is on September 19 with a presentation planned on design and construction of a Colonial Tilt Top Tea table by Arnie Bandstra. For now, we will maintain a bimonthly meeting schedule–the 3rd Monday of every odd-numbered month. I will use a separate email list to communicate with SIG members; contact me via email if you want to be added to this list. As both Fox Valley and DuPage Woodworkers clubs are supporting this SIG, meeting notices will also be included in the clubs’ newsletters, but I will not be sending club-wide emails.

Meeting Location

New MembersThe DuPage Woodworkers welcomes members from all over

the region. Our members consist of all skill levels; from beginners to professionals. Meetings and field trips provide an opportunity to gain and share knowledge about woodworking. Our regular meetings are once a month for about 2 1/2 hours. Meetings (usually the fourth Wednesday of the month) consist of some announcements about activities, a short discussion of any woodworking problems that members want to ask about, a drawing for woodworking prizes, and a presentation on some aspect of woodworking.

If you are interested in joining the DuPage Woodworkers, you are invited to attend a meeting. If you become a member, dues are twenty-five dollars per year. Membership entitles you to attend meetings, to go on field trips (shop visits, woodworking businesses, etc.), and a discount at several local woodworking supply companies.

If you have questions about joining the DuPage Woodworkers, please contact Bruce Kinney ([email protected]).
