    ASL Self Assessment Guidelines

During the semester, you have had many opportunities to create dialogues or other

expressive presentations in ASL. You have been given feedback on these

assignments/presentations from your instructor and your peers, informing you on

your strengths and areas needing improvement in ASL. In addition, you have alsohad opportunities to interact with Deaf individuals in various capacities (e.g.

videophone, Deaf events, etc.) and have analyzed and discussed details of and from

    these interactions.

Your assignment is to review your ASL production from the beginning of ASL I

until now, with a concentration on your progress and improvement in your current

course, and then write a responseincluding specific examples, with details!!!

marking this progress. The idea is to analyze these clips and presentations forgrowth and improvement in your ASL skills, vocabulary, and other expressive

    qualities.

To prepare for your self-assessment narrative, you should:

review and discuss your previous goals and ASL production focus areas and

comment on the progress youve since you established those goals. Add details

of when and why you made the initial goals for your ASL acquisition.

Analyze (in detail, with examples from your assignments and/or memory)

linguistic information (video clips, dialogue feedback from me and your peers,

etc.) that is specific to this course.

o You should consider dialogues and presentations, video journals and

expressive homework practices, interactions with members of the deaf

community, and general class interaction. You should look at and include

specific feedback from your instructor and students, when applicable.

Review and refer to any previous self assessments that you made on specific

assignments for this course or previous courses. These may be posted in

BlackBoard Threaded Discussions. Include some details from these assignment

self-assessments; they will help inform your broader self assessment for this

    course/assignment.

Then, you will write a response (at least3-4 pages, though it is likely to be more

than this) that shows your reflection on your cumulative ASL production. How

have you grown/improved? What are the differences? You must

cite at least three general areas of strength/needing improvement for your

current course and include specific examples/details.

o Then for each general area, you will elaborate on and give specific

analysis of your ASL production, remarking on your perspective on ASL

production. Are you Satisfied (S), Slightly Satisfied (SS), or Not

Satisfied (NS) with your ASL production in each area? Why?

reflect on what you think helped (or hindered) your improvement. Be

specific! Do not just say that you practiced a lot!

state at least two specific goals for improvement, explaining how you thinkyou will meet those goals!

Lastly, you must reflect on your ASL goals and objectives from previous

courses (at least 2) and give details on whether these goals have been realized

    at this present time.

o For each area, you should include commentary and examples of how and

why you have noticed improvement and/or what goals have yet to be

realized (and if you can, why they have not yet been realized).

In your reflections, you may want to focus on topics such as

Complexity of your sentencesDid you stick with the simplest

questions/answers or did you try to add details to your

    questions/comments?

Use of proper ASL grammar Did your sentences follow English word

order or did you use Topic Comment and Object-Subject-Verb

    formation (when appropriate)?

Fluency of your sentences/sign productionhow well/smoothly did your

signs flow together? Did you pause a lot? Were you mouthing

    English too much?

This assignment is due on the date specified by your instructor.

Remember that if you are continuing on to ASL 2, 3, or 4, you should keep a copy

of your self assessment(s) and keep your video journals/documentation of

recordings for future use. They are required in future classes.
