Over the years, we have shared many exceptional moments of triumph with you. This year is no exception. Again, we celebrate your commitment to our community and the difference your donations make to patients and their families at London Health Sciences Centre.

Last year, disbursements from our Foundation hit a record high of $36 million. We couldn’t have done this without your generosity.

The Lindros Legacy Research building and its teaching and research centres opened at University Hospital late last fall. The Gerald C. Baines Centre for Translational Cancer Research also opened at Victoria Hospital. The research and training that these centres provide will make a difference to patients in our region fi rst and will also change the lives of people around the globe as our Hospital shares its discoveries and knowledge with the world.

Programs are moving into the new tower at Victoria Hospital and an offi cial opening is planned for this fall. We still have some fundraising to complete, but the innovations and increased capacity of this tower would not be available to our community today without your already generous gifts.

The advanced care that this new facility enables will change so many lives for the better. By supporting research, you enable discoveries leading to new medical treatments and cures. By supporting the purchase of specialized equipment, you give our dedicated physicians and staff the advanced tools they need to make a difference in the lives of their patients. By supporting the building and renovation of hospital space, you help create environments designed to promote healing. By supporting education, you advance the knowledge of health care workers today and you help create the caregivers of tomorrow. And by enhancing patient care through initiatives like patient support funds, you help people concentrate on the important task of healing.

Your generosity affects each and every patient, their family members and their friends as it does those who express their gratitude in the stories we share with you. These moments of triumph happen thousands of times each year at London Health Sciences Centre because you took that moment to give. They will continue to happen because of your dedication and care for your community.

We are pleased to announce Linda Brickwood, RN, as this year’s recipient.

As a Venous Access Consultant and clinical leader of the IV team at University Hospital, Linda was a pioneer, an advocate, a role model and a teacher in her fi eld - and one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Home Total Parenteral Nutrition Program. Linda engaged patients easily, compassionately and respectfully, thereby instilling confi dence in them and their families. She instilled the same confi dence in the professionals she taught and worked with. Linda’s demeanor and abilities earned the respect of patients and colleagues alike.

By achieving her successes with the same spirit that Martha espoused and exhibited, Linda Brickwood is indeed a worthy recipient of this prestigious award.

We would also like to take this opportunity to announce a special granting of the Martha Curgin Inspiration Award that will be presented formally at the Trauma Golf Classic this summer.

As Chief of Surgery, Dr. Murray Girotti was instrumental in setting up LHSC’s Trauma Program. After an illness put an end to his ability to operate, Murray continued to make an indelible mark on health care as a Senior Medical Advisor, Vice-President of Medical Affairs and as Medical Director of LHSC’s Trauma Program. A friend of Martha’s, he was also an inspirational leader who left his mark on students, colleagues and patients alike. Sadly, Murray passed away in 2010. This special award will honour his contributions to our Hospital community and to research and education across Canada and throughout North America.

The Martha Curgin Inspiration Award

Martha Curgin was our Foundation’s fi rst Executive Director before her passing in 2003. She was a visionary leader whose enthusiasm and passion inspired everyone around her to achieve greatness.Celebrating its fourth year, this award recognizes people who motivate us and make us strive to be better.
