MIAMI This year’s Sum-mer Groove hosted by Alon-zo Mourning and DwyaneWade — the annual five-dayfestival of charitable eventsculminating in an All-Starbasketball game — got aboost last week when Wadeagreed to re-sign with theHeat.
Wade admitted it mighthave been difficult to helphost the event, founded byMourning, the retired Heatstar, 14 years ago, had hechosen to sign elsewhere.
Instead, Wade not only isback as a co-host, he’s gotnew superstar teammates,LeBron James and ChrisBosh, who will surely helpraise the star power of theevent.
Wade and Mourningaren’t revealing which ce-lebrities might be joiningthem for the Groove, whichstarts Wednesday with agolf tournament at DoralGolf Resort & Spa; includesa comedy show Friday andgala dinner Saturday, bothat Hard Rock Live in Holly-wood; and wraps up Sundaywith a block party andcelebrity All-Star basket-ball game at AmericanAir-lines Arena.
“We’ll have some sur-prises for you all,” Mourn-ing said Tuesday at Over-town Youth Center, which isa major beneficiary of theevent.
Wade said more impor-tant than star power isentertaining South Floridafamilies and raising dollarsto help the needy.
“It’s about the kids,”Wade said. “Of course, we’dlove for the big names tocome down … but it’s aboutthe community.”
Wade reminded everyone
that tickets are still avail-able, though he said with asmile: “With the excitementgoing on in Miami, I thinkwe sold a couple extra tick-ets. I don’t why, but I thinkwe have.”
Since Mourninglaunched the Groove in1997, it has raised more than$7 million for AlonzoMourning Charities, whichhelps fund mentoring, youth center and other pro-grams and more recentlyfor the Wade’s World Foun-dation, which supports edu-cation, health and socialskills programs for at-riskyouth.
The Groove is the largestfund-raiser for AlonzoMourning Charities, the or-ganization’s CEO VincentDimmock said. He said theorganization wants to du-plicate programs at theOvertown Youth Center.
“The long-term goal is towork with school systemsall over the country andintegrate our programswith theirs,” Dimmocksaid.
