Wade admitted it might have been difficult to help host the event, founded by Mourning, the retired Heat star, 14 years ago, had he chosen to sign elsewhere. Instead, Wade not only is back as a co-host, he’s got new superstar teammates, LeBron James and Chris Bosh, who will surely help raise the star power of the event. Wade and Mourning aren’t revealing which ce- lebrities might be joining them for the Groove, which starts Wednesday with a golf tournament at Doral Golf Resort & Spa; includes a comedy show Friday and gala dinner Saturday, both at Hard Rock Live in Holly- wood; and wraps up Sunday with a block party and celebrity All-Star basket- ball game at AmericanAir- lines Arena. “We’ll have some sur- prises for you all,” Mourn- ing said Tuesday at Over- town Youth Center, which is a major beneficiary of the event. Wade said more impor- tant than star power is entertaining South Florida families and raising dollars to help the needy. “It’s about the kids,” Wade said. “Of course, we’d love for the big names to come down … but it’s about the community.” Wade reminded everyone that tickets are still avail- able, though he said with a smile: “With the excitement going on in Miami, I think we sold a couple extra tick- ets. I don’t why, but I think we have.” Since Mourning launched the Groove in 1997, it has raised more than $7 million for Alonzo Mourning Charities, which helps fund mentoring, youth center and other pro- grams and more recently for the Wade’s World Foun- dation, which supports edu- cation, health and social skills programs for at-risk youth. The Groove is the largest fund-raiser for Alonzo Mourning Charities, the or- ganization’s CEO Vincent Dimmock said. He said the organization wants to du- plicate programs at the Overtown Youth Center. “The long-term goal is to work with school systems all over the country and integrate our programs with theirs,” Dimmock said.
