Everything went wrong. The problem was that I allowed that hole to ruin the rest of the game. It took me a few seasons to place the control of the game back in my hands rather than allowing one bad shot or one bad hole to stress me out so badly that the rest of the game went to pot. As many of you know, I am the director and founder of a county program STOPBIAS. This is the only educational program for hate crimes offenders in the county. The program started in 1991 and since that time almost 400 defendants, both juveniles and adults, have attended the program.

What I still find amazing is how often when I ask a defendant as to why he (98% have been males) did what he did, the answer I receive is, "I don't know!"

I realize that sometimes the defendant is simply not willing to own up to his responsibility in committing the crime, but so often he really has no idea. In other words, he allowed his emotions, or the moment, or the people he hung out with, or the other person in the altercation to be in control of the situation rather than himself. I then teach him to take control of his life by thinking before he acts or speaks rather than just reacting or acting out, or doing what others or the situation tell him to do. He needs to become the master of his own destiny.

I know that many of us, and I include myself, often fail to think before we act or speak. Our behavior is a series of knee jerk reactions. When we live our lives in this way, however, we allow circumstances, situations, and other people to take away the control of our lives and this is neither healthy nor productive.

I recall one of the lessons I learned early on when I first took up the game of golf. I would begin the round with a few good holes, since I was warmed up, and then would come the disaster hole. Everything went wrong. The problem was that I allowed that hole to ruin the rest of the game. It took me a few seasons to place the control of the game back in my hands rather than allowing one bad shot or one bad hole to stress me out so badly that the rest of the game went to pot.

Shavuot will be observed on Tuesday night May 18th at 7:15 pm. The Rabbi will share the methods of the rabbis in studying the Torah with the intention of helping you to be able to study and understand the Torah and Bible as well. From the URJ: Shavuot is a Hebrew word meaning "weeks" and refers to the Jewish festival marking the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Shavuot, like so many other Jewish holidays began as an ancient agricultural festival, marking the end of the spring barley harvest and the beginning of the summer wheat harvest. Shavuot was distinguished in ancient times by bringing crop offerings to the Temple in Jerusalem.

Bulletin Information

I accomplished this by stepping back from the game, after the horrendous shot or hole, take a deep breath, calm my mind and body down, and then, with myself under control of my Self, take the next shot or go onto the next hole. And guess what? Most often the next shot or hole was really good.

In the Jewish ethical and spiritual literature there is a word, Kavanah. This word is often translated as "intention". It can also be translated as Mindfulness, Focus, Meditation, Concentration. All these mental/spiritual inner processes have the effect of giving the person control over his or her next action or word. They allow one to focus not only attention and intention but also physio/psychic energy to devote one's energies to making the right and most effective decision for the action that is to follow.

This teaching regarding Kavanah is an important one to learn, practice, and incorporate into our daily lives anytime of the year. But I mention it to you in this bulletin message because as this is the time of the counting of the Omer, as we reflect on the meaning of each of the forty-nine days between Pesach and Shavuot, there are Kavanot (intentions) for each day in order to get the most out of each day and to give the most one can. Each Kavanah opens the person to the spiritual energies that reside in that day, but these energies cannot be retrieved if there is not an awareness of them. This is where the Kavanah of the day comes in. By doing this, you become in control of the events of the day. You happen to them rather than they just happening to you.

This can then be applied to all of life. If you are interested in these Kavanot, please let me know and I will make them available to you. Please remember that YOU are in charge of your life when you take charge of it. One way of accomplishing this is to practice Kavanot, intentions, before you act so that the action you take is the one that you want to take rather than one which is determined by others or circumstance. Good luck!

Attention: Items must be submitted on

or before May 10, 2010 to be included in the

President’s Message                                         Joel Silverman

Our Temple Constitution requires that we hold Congregational Meetings open to all member families in good standing in November and May each year. The Board has scheduled the spring meeting for Thursday evening, May 20th beginning at 7:00 PM. In a separate mailing you have already received, or will receive shortly, an invitation to that meeting. I strongly urge that you set aside an hour of your time that evening and plan to join us.

The only matters requiring Congregational approval will be renewal of the Cantor’s contract and we will be voting on a slate of candidates to fill Executive and Trustee positions on the Temple Board for the year ahead. Officers and Committee Chairs will present their semi-annual reports to keep you informed of current and future activities and the entire Board will be available to answer your questions regarding anything you want to know about B’nai Israel.

Via the bulletin, mailings and the web, the Board of Trustees is able to communicate with the B’nai Israel family, but our opportunity to receive feedback from member families is more limited. The Congregational Meeting is your chance to make that happen. Another way to share your thoughts is through our newly created Temple blog.

We are presently one of only twenty-two Reform

Congregations in North America to have created a blog site under the auspices of the Union of Reform Judaism. Online for only a few months, we are just getting our feet wet and attempting to generate the interest and critical mass necessary to make this modern form of interactive communication a useful and informative tool for B’nai Israel. You can access the blog through our web site at www.bnai-israel.org. (Or check out the front page in this month’s bulletin.) Please take a look, participate and tell us what you think.

I hope to see many of you on May 20th.

Shalom,

Joel

Last year at about this time, the Long Term Planning Committee was facilitating a series of Focus Groups in which temple members were asked to get in small groups and, with the help of a facilitator, express their concerns and their hopes for the future of our Temple. Approximately one hundred people volunteered to join these informal groups and I’d like to thank them for giving up a few hours of their time. I hope you found them as interesting as we did. Below is a list of some areas that appear to be on people’s minds. I have taken out concerns about Rabbi Moss retiring any time soon since he came to his senses and realized what a wonderful relationship he shares with all of us.

1. Youth group activities 2. Family activities 3. The future of our Religious School 4. Men’s Club 5. Activities for Seniors 6. Temple Bulletin Board 7. Babysitting for High Holidays

The planning committee will be taking your ideas, sharing them with the Board of Trustees and, together, looking for ways to improve in these areas. But we don’t plan to stop there. Long term planning means that we are always looking to the future and trying to make sure that B’nai Israel remains a pillar of our Jewish community, an organization that strives to meet the continually changing needs of our members.

Come down to our first ever

Sisterhood Book Swap! Tuesday, May 18, 2010 8:00 pm

The Book Swap is Open to All!

Here’s how it works... Bring any number of gently handled books to the Temple anytime after April 1 including the evening of the Book Swap (attach a note with your name and number of books you have contributed). You will receive a “receipt” for the number of books that you contribute. Come to the Temple on May 18, bring your “receipt” and choose that number of books to take home! (For example: Bring in three cookbooks…take home a mystery, a biography and a Dr. Seuss! etc.)

The more books you contribute, the more books you can take home! The more books you contribute, the greater variety that will be available to swap!

Our Special Guest Speaker is Ms. Pat S. Hogeboom, local author of the historical fiction book, “Idle Hours: The Grace and the Glory”. Ms. Hogeboom will be selling her book for a discounted price of $10.00 and she will be available to sign your purchased copy!

All “leftover” books will be donated to organizations/facilities whose members will enjoy them.

Thanks and we look forward to swapping with you! Please call the Temple with any questions.

Are You In Need Of A Good Read?

Ritual Committee                      Terri Randall, Ritual Chairperson Monday June 7, 2010 7pm Temple Social Hall

As described by the URJ… “Ritual is an important part of what holds us together as a family. We all have rituals that touch our lives. The purpose of Jewish ritual is to provide us with a sense of connection with the Jewish people and to infuse into our daily lives a feeling of familiarity and belonging.”

Come join us as we embark on the creation of a new committee in which we will work to maintain, expand and infuse our congregation and daily lives with the beautiful rituals and traditions of Judaism.

New members as well as those who wish to reconnect to the selfless service of supporting our congregation are welcome!

Please contact me with any questions at [email protected] or leave a message in the Temple office (631) 563-1660.

From my home to yours with Shalom,

Terri Randall

Ritual Chairperson

Please join us and donate a pint of blood during B’nai Israel Sisterhood’s Blood Drive on Monday May 3rd between 3:30 PM and 9PM. We donated twenty-three pints to Long Island Blood Services last November. Those pints saved lives, and we count on all of you to continue to be as generous as in the past.

If you can’t make this day, you may donate at the LI Blood Service Center and mention us and we will get credit for your pints.

I will be at Services each Friday evening to gather names of those who wish to make appointments. You may also call me at home at 631 419 6640 - please leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible.

Love to you all, Rita DiGiantomasso

Donations  We Need Your Help! Your Temple’s income from dues has fallen during the past year, leaving B’nai Israel more dependent on donations than ever. Please consider making a donation at this time. While your donation may be made to honor a special person, remember that it also helps to provide good works for a larger community.

Donations of $1000 or larger will be commemorated on an attractive new arrangement of plaques to be placed in the Temple lobby. Large donations may also be made in installments.

How to Donate: You can bring or mail a check identifying the intended fund to the Temple. You can also arrange to provide larger donations in installments. Please contact the Temple office if you have any questions. (631) 563-1660 or email [email protected]

My Own Endowment Fund?  The Temple welcomes larger donations that establish endowment funds in accordance with donor wishes. An endowment provides the Temple with long-term benefits that you specify. Endowments are publicized and often grow by attracting additional donations from others. You may name your endowment fund in honor or in memory of someone special. Please call the Temple Office at 563-1660 for further information.
