ACT Health Records (Privacy and Access) Act 1997-recent changes
Changes to the Health Records (Privacy and Access) Act 1997 will start on 1 October
2010 and will aect patient health record keepers as ollows:
it requires a period of four weeks notice to consumers and the community before
a closure, merger or relocation o a practice;
it enables the prioritisation of urgent requests for the transfer of health records;
it claries that consumers can only ask for a copy of their health record and not
an original but this does not prevent health record keepers transerring original
records i they choose; it claries the time frames around when a requested copy of a record must be
provided by a record keeper; and
it introduces a requirement that record keepers notify ACT Health of practice
closures, mergers or relocations.
Training sessions will be conducted by the ACT Health Services Commissioner in
August and September 2010 to help record keepers, health proessionals and the
general public to understand the responsibilities o a record keeper. An enrolment
ee will apply. Sessions details will be provided closer to August 2010. In the
meantime, i people wish to register their interest in attending a training session

Workers compensation policy holders
The ACT Deault Insurance Fund (the DI Fund) provides a saety net to injured
workers who are let without compensation through the actions o their employer.
The cost o providing this protection is met by every ACT employer who does the
right thing and obtains a compulsory workerscompensation insurance policy. In
the past, the cost to policy holders (the DI Fund levy) has been incorporated within
the overall workerscompensation premium paid by employers.
From 4.00pm, 30 June 2010 insurers will be required to disclose the DI Fund levy
amount on every premium notice. This will allow every employer who does the
right thing to see the true cost o non-compliance in the community.
Through community awareness and action, those employers who avoid their
workerscompensation responsibilities will be brought to account. Report raud
and non-compliance to WorkSae ACT on 02 6207 3000.
