A General Saw carbide-tipped circular saw blade is a

precision tool and requires careful maintenance if it is to

retain its performance and precision.

Fitting

While the blade is not particularly delicate, the carbide

edges can easily be damaged by knocks and impact. For

this reason, never lay the blade down on a hard surface and

always take a little extra care when fitting.

It is important that the diameter of the flange should be

as large as possible, preferably a third of the blade itself.

Check that the blade is running true. (It should not be more

than 0.01 out of true.)

Feed

The feed speed should be kept within the limits

recommended by the machine manufacturer for the

material being cut. Feeding must be parallel to the blade.

Feeding at an angle may damage the teeth and overheat

the blade.

Cleaning and Storage

Resins and other material which easily become attached

to the sides of the blade often cause overheating of the

blades.This may result in the blade going out of tension

and even cracking. Always keep the blade clean.Wash it

with solvent. (Never try to scrape a blade clean with a hard

tool.) When not in use, the blade should be cleaned

thoroughly and stored in it's original case.

Dado blades require especially careful cleaning since

their construction causes a rather slow dispersal of heat. If

serious overheating occurs, the joint between the two discs

may be damaged. In such cases, the blade should

immediately be sent to General Saw for repair. By use of a

proprietary technique, it is possible to repair minor

damages easily and quickly.

Regrinding and Renovation

It is uneconomical to use dull blades. Should the teeth be

damaged, it may be necessary to grind away much more

the carbide than when sharpening only, thereby shortening

the life of the blade. When teeth have become excessively

damaged, it is possible for General Saw to retip the blade,

for a cost much less than purchasing a new blade.

sharpened or altered by a facility other than General Saw

Tooth Styles

4 ATB + 1 Raker.Used on General purpose / combination blades. Rips and crosscutsequally well and provides a very smooth cut. It produces very lowcutting pressures that almost eliminate the tendency to tear out.The chips fall free in the chip spaces created by the large sideclearance angles.

Straight Top.Typically used for ripping (cutting with the grain) softwood andhardwood. The advantage of this design is that it cuts both sidesof the kerf simultaneously, making it twice as effective as teeth in astaggered tooth saw. Its balanced cutting forces reduce saw bodystresses and the tooth form is relatively easy to maintain.

Alternate Top Bevel.Typically used for general purpose / combination and crosscut sawblades. One advantage of this design is that it produces very lowcutting pressures that almost eliminate the tendency to tear out.The chips fall free in the chip spaces created by the large sideclearance angles.

High Alternate Top Bevel.Higher top bevel grind and longer teeth than standard ATB blades.Specially designed for cutting acrylics and formicas or melaminewith chip free results. Extra fine chipless sawing on acrylics andformicas or melamine where a scoring unit is not used.The chips fall free in the chip spaces created by the large sideclearance angles.

Triple-Chip Grind.The 45º Teeth do the cutting and the flat tooth is a raker for chipcleanout. Triple Chip Grinds combine a balanced cutting force,low tooth drag and free chip flow. This blade can be used to cutMelamine, Plastics, Formica®, other materials that are subject tochipping. Large inclined angles in the cutting edges give thetriple chip form good wear resistance, and low tooth drag.

Definitions:

Anti-Kickback Chip Limiter - A special shoulder design

that prevents kickback from overfeeding.

Bore - Ofter referred to as the Arbor hole, it is how the

saw blade is mounted to saw.

Carbide Tip - Also called the tooth, carbide tips can be

re-sharpened, giving the blade a longer life.

Cooling Slot - Slots that are laser cut into the saw to

keep it from overheating during operation.

Copper Plug - Used to reduce the noise created by the

saw blade while it is being operated.

Diameter - Measured from the furthest edge of one tip

to the furthest edge of the tip directly opposite.

Expansion Slots - Reduces noise and allows the blade

to expand and contract as needed.

Gullet - Dished space between teeth that provides

clearance for the material being removed.

Keyways & Pin Holes - Special mounting features

needed for some machines. Size and number may vary.

Hook Angle - The amount of forward or backward lean

each tooth has.

Kerf - The width of the carbide tip measured from the

two widest points of the top of the carbide tip.

Plate - The body of the saw that is made from a high

carbon, chrome, nickel and special moly-alloy steel.

Radial Side Clearance - Side relief provided to prevent

burning or melting.

Relief Angle - Top clearance that changes with the style

of blade.

Shoulder - The shoulder's major functions are to add

strength and support to the carbide tip.

Tangential Clearance - Also called “Head Clearance” it

allows the tooth to move through without burning.

Tensioning Ring - Ring made from tensioning plate.

Maintains the saw blades straightness under stress.

Top Bevel Angle - The steeper the angle, the sharper

the tooth is and the faster it becomes dull.

A drawing should always be enclosed when ordering

saw blades that require screw holes. If a drawing is

not available, please provide the following

- Type of Hogging Unit, etc being used.

- Number of screw holes (SH) and the relative

positions (A).

- Diameter of bolt circle countersunk, right (R) or

left (L), with the blade held so that the teeth on

the top edge point towards you.

- Screw hole countersink angle (V) or Diameter (E)

- Screw size (e.g. M6, M8)
